I remember having this exact same problem when I purchased my SRT4 back in 2005. I went back and forth with the dealership to get it fixed under warranty. A lot of members on the srtforums (back when forums were a thing) were having the same issue too. The dealership ended using a type of spray sealant on the cowl and never had any issues out of it again. Also another area where they leak at is the rear tail lights, if you still have have the factory ones.
If it was also wet in the back behind the passenger seat, I would start looking at your tail light gaskets. Put a bead of clear silicone right on the gasket and re-install.
luckily mine has never had any moisture beside the passenger floor. I just replaced all the floor pans in my E30 so I will do everything I can to avoid that again haha
You would really hate the carpet padding on a BMW made in the last 20 years or so. Sucks up water like crazy and takes forever to completely dry back out, even if the carpet is removed and set out in the sun. Cars are stupid sometimes 😄
