So far, I think the best advice I've received when it comes to putting is parallel to the best advice I've received about disc golf in general: work from the basket out. Practicing 40 foot putts will not make you better at 20 foot putts. Start at a short distance, even if it is only 7 feet. Practice, dial that distance to where you are confident, smooth, and making 95%. Move a little further away, repeat. I have been amazed at how fast that distance has increased.
I never thought of it that way. Ive been playing since i was 16, (38 now) and just started actually practicing about 4 months ago. I did take a 6 year break before that due to life being off for me, but since ive started practicing my game has improved big time, for obvious reasons lol. And that advice im taking to heart, i always practice from 25-30' and its so inconsistent. Sometimes ill drain 10 in a row and others miss ten in a row. Im gonna start at 10' and work back from there. Thanks for the advice my guy!
Great advice! To date, the best putting practice drill I ever learned was this: 1) Grab 3 putters, and place 1 down at 10ft. and then putt your other 2 putters. If you make both putts, flip the disc at your feet backwards away from the basket and then repeat your putts. If you miss both your putts, flip the disc at your feet towards the basket and repeat your putts. If you make 1 and miss 1 then repeat your putts from that distance. This drill is fast, relatively fun, and it naturally gets you to a distance that challenges you and VERY quickly builds your 10-20ft confidence putts. This single drill has shaved more strokes off my game than any other.
My favorite saying that I learned from my music teacher YEARS ago was "No, practice does NOT make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect." She was right, and it applies to all things you do! Great video as per usual!
Brilliant. I'm new to this, the weather outside hasn't been conducive to throwing much (losing a disc in 6-8" of snow is a real bummer), so I've been practicing 15'-18' putts in my basement. I appreciate you telling me all these things so I don't have to learn all of this the hard way. You the man, much appreciated. Smash.
You always seem to make videos that so applicable to where I am in my game. My putting is definitely the place I can improve the most. I feel that I have a tendency to putt scared so I miss short a lot. I know that the biggest help will be just getting out and practicing more. Thanks again for all the great content you put out!
The biggest change in my mental game came from my 10ft putts becoming second nature. That allowed me to have confidence running chains for birdy just knowing that if I miss I'll still have par locked in just like you were saying. Love the videos!
The part about being confident in being able to make the comebackers really rang true for me. Being able to be more aggressive when running it has completely changed my game for the better.
Same. I feel nerves are 60% what get to me about attacking longer puts, but this definitely puts it in perspective. Go for the ridiculous it you know you can sink the makable one after should you miss.
I started playing disc golf 7 years ago and immediately got hooked. Not only playing, but Allso studying teqnicue and becoming a youth trainer for our local club. I've seen alot of tutorial videos on TH-cam, but Robbie's are just the best stuff out there! Funn, light and easy to watch, and still getting important points across. I learned so much during this video, finding new ways to look at putting. Can't wait to check out all his other videos! Thank you Robbie!
I tell you what. I feel this. I've watched so many videos and tried to find my way to putting. Go out an hour everyday. Was getting better at one point but then it really fell out. I needed this info. Will go try it bow in hopes it helps. Dog these videos man!
Thanks for sharing this! I've started a putting practice routine where I drop minis at 10, 15, and 20 feet from the basket. Then I throw from each distance until I hit 5 putts right handed, then 5 putts left handed. I've found that being able to putt with either hand can be a game changer, especially from a less than ideal lie or with the wind coming at you from a funky direction.
Tons of great stuff here. Best advice i got from Scott Stokely on my down/up-swing and release was to "paint the basket going down and back up on your swing and when you release it'll go right where your hand is pointing"... and by gosh if he wasn't right!
Robbie. You and I have gone on the exact same putting journey with Mike. He had to work with me on the same EXACT things. Last year was filled with hour long putting practice daily the whole summer. I went from whatever you called my putt to a push putt and now a spin putt but I can vary it because of mechanics and understanding supination that Mike's taught. To do all of this digitally you should be proud man I would not have been able to improve like you if I didn't have the tactile feedback. Love coming back and binging on these videos to see how much mechanics just make sense for everyone when you get down to the science of if!
Your video was a confidence boost to me, and showing your struggle absolutely made me feel like I’m on the right track. My entire disc golf experience has seemed like two steps forward and one step back (or sometimes two steps back…). When it seems like that to me, I put myself in a position to just enjoy the sport and not try so hard, purposely playing for bogie or par. It’s a good way of doing a little reset and coming back stronger.
Beginner here, played my 1st round last week, I did OK overall (+27) but I did miss a 9 foot putt on hole 6. Also, thanks for doing beginner specific content, most everyone else just does content for advanced & experienced players.
Dude I can’t believe I never thought of putting the disc dot on the back side of the chains to promote putting through the chains 🤯 Keep up the good work! I truly believe you are doing what you were meant to do!
Man, I needed this one today. Cost myself easily 3-5 strokes today on stupid misses. Focus, confidence and practice are my biggest things. I don’t make excuses at all - I know I suck. Got a big event coming up next weekend - 4 courses, 4 rounds, 2 days. The physical demands are gonna be tough enough for me and if my putting is like it was today, it’s gonna be a LONNNNNG weekend. I don’t expect miracles in a week, but this video has given me some good motivation to get to work. Thanks, Robbie!!
Hey Robbie, this video came at the perfect time! Been feeling like I'm regressing with my putting in form and going from smooth releases to...the opposite of smooth releases! Thank you for the help and tips - good to know it should all come with practice!
I really liked all of the advice in this video. You talked about routine and I wanted to mention something I've heard from other people about routine, and that is to use your breath in the routine. It's such a good way to settle yourself and get into the moment, it's not complicated, and it's something you do literally all the time so it's easy to remember to do it.
But on a more serious note, I've noticed the same problem in both traditional golf and disc golf. When people care about results, and don't meet expectations, they start to fear/hate putting. Often this causes people to try to get it over with as quickly as possible. This leads to jerky movements. Watch McBeth on a day when he's making everything and focus on using his smooth tempo. Nothing helps me more than focusing on the process, not the result, and making sure I don't get in a "have to make" mindset and then spiral into despair and bad rhythm after some bad misses.
like always great video....im 65 been throwing a Frisbee pretty much my whole life...just started playing dgolf about a year ago i guess...and i cant get enough of it now...my problem is 275 is all i can muster....u put me on a course where everything is 275 and under I'm like paul beastmode mcbeth....by throwing Frisbees my whole life my short game is insane 150 in its usually a 10 foot putt... forehand backhand underhand...left or right hand..you learn to control what a Frisbee does after that many years of throwing them....but getting back to your putting video...i putt like i throw darts....i also threw league darts in my younger years...so i incorporated that into putting....it just like brodie smiths scobber putt....but i was throwing upside down Frisbees 40 years ago....anyway its just like throwing a flick forehand except its upside down and its in your line of sight...just like a dart....pretend like your throwing a dart your hand comes right to your face...now picture a disc in your hand upside down thumb under disc...pointer finger and middle finger on top... just like throwing a forehand...except disc is upside down....bring it towards your face inline with your eyes and shoot....i dont miss 10 to 20 ever...."ever"....unless theres stupid wind..when no kind of putt works... the only problem is 28 to 30 is my limit depending on grade of putt...because after that i have to take my putter back over my head like brodies scoober putt and you lose your line of sight taking it over your head....you cant throw a dart accurately from over your head....i know it sounds terribly cocky but its true...i would send you a video but texting is pretty much the limit of my technical abilities....try it....also in your videos show throwing and putting from wierd stances....knees or stretched out....every kind of position cause you know in the woods thats always the throw or putt your delt with having to throw....keep up the great entertaining and helpful videos...also kudos on all the other videos and sights I've seen you on lately....
I couldn't agree more. I've been working on my putt for real since January 1st when I went on parental leave. I've been averaging 150-250 putts a day and man has my putt been anything but consistent. It has had its own life, evolving on its own. The stands, the grip, the wrist, the arm, I mean everything has changed through these 6 months and I've spent so many hours. So I'm so thrilled to say that I have reached the first step, I can keep putting more or less the same way day after day, week after week. I'm not saying I'm perfect in my putting game, I am trying to improve and that means changing stuff but the changes are subtle and do not change my overall putting form. They are streamlined with my game and I've been able to work on my outside putts, +30 feet. Last week we had a weekly tournament and man I was surprised and happy, the final score wasn't wasn't reason but I managed to put in 4 (FOUR), 45ft putts, and even had the disc kiss the chains twice with 50ft an-hyzer putts. That felt amazing. I was struggling to make 35ft putts the old fashioned way so I felt confident to experiment with step putts and man has that brought some glory 😉 I can only say I do what you take about and it works. If you want to do anything good you need to put down the time and work and be prepared that for every step ahead you will take a small, "half-step" back... but you're gonna get those birdies and you're gonna end up in top positions in tournaments. Keep it up!!!!
So many great tips. And for something that should be so obvious, I never thought much about my fingers. I watched this video while my daughter was in dance class, came home and improved my putting by a good 15-20%
The two biggest tips from this video that were Aha! moments are 1) Aim for a link BEHIND the basket (genius!) and 2) move your off fingers down the disc a bit to get more pop. These are both game changers. Thank you!
Building confidence is something I've heard about putting. I've started building confidence, trying to think about where I'm focusing, and I love that you explained the grip and how it affects your putt. I think the number one tip I've heard about putting is maintaining a RHYTHM. I heard from Philo Brathwaite to aim, bring your disc down slow, and pop it forward. Stop thinking about anything else and do your routine, established rhythm, saying "Apple Pie" with the POP forward on Pie is one I used the most to establish my rhythm.
Love it Robbie, I thank the biggest thing for me is just taking the time everyday and putt. It's so true, your not going to get better all the sudden one day unless you put the reps in
I found kicking my back-foot out felt really weird at first, but due to giving you a better foundation, it feels easier to throw and is much more consistent.
Awesome video, much appreciated Mr. Robbie. I felt like a trash putter for the past few years, and finally feel like I'm GETTING to a point where a 15 footer doesn't feel like a 50/50 chance. I get up and down very well and off the tee, its the green that really hinders me. Looking forward to trying some of the tips in this video - God bless!
Love watching your videos man! You have been a great help with my disc golf game and you are one of the only channels my fiance will take advice from so thank you ! I hope you keep it up man and I am loving the in the bag podcast as well !
The Marksman basket is awesome for teaching focus on the center pole. I have a top end full size basket and a Marksman. The Marksman is great for practicing focus on the disc hitting the pole. If you miss the pole, it is rare to drain it.
Love your content. Awesome learning my favorite sport from a fellow bama man. Going to George Ward to play a round today. I’ll keep this video in mind when I putt!
I love this video!!! Very helpful!!! I’m definitely in the situation where I try to practice putt every day but I feel even worse every time I practice. I start out feeling confident and then after 30 minutes I’m like an infant child and have no idea where my putts are going, and then I go inside frustrated.
#1 thing to practice is follow through and keep your arm extended until the disc makes contact with something...basket or ground. If you don't commit that to muscle memory, you won't remember to do it on the course. When you miss, look where your follow-through is pointing. Get good at 10 foot putts first. don't worry about longer putts until your confident within 10'. Start your practice with confident success and then add a foot or two until your just as confident. Allow yourself a free pass for anything outside your confident range.
whole video summed up practice more, practice will build your muscle memory, focus (if your actually putting work in and not just throwing plastic around), all of which will build confidence on and off the course.
at start i was hyzer putter but then i learned how to pop disc flat whit my fingers and it made my put way more consistent, tho i still miss still high and low but still on center line so im pretty happy on my putt.
Hey Robby, you have given me an idea. I’m going to attempt to throw 15 putts at every basket on a 9 holes course. Same range on every basket. The only thing that change should be the wind. Wish me luck.
I started as a push putt but the wind and inability to get the putter to the basket from circles edge made me take a step back. I total 3 steps back, and just tried to do what is natural. turns out I was actually a spin putter and now it has take pressure off of my approaches and drive.
I have enjoyed your content and appreciate the advice and journey. Really threw me off when you said 'Josh." Haha. Im gonna focus on that soundbite next tournament for a confidence boost.
Robby! Great video… again! How much of a factor has putter weight been for you? I went down in mid/driver weight and it has helped my game. I’ve seen videos about driver weight but nothing on putter weight.
Robbie, what shoes were you wearing? Looks like it had good ankle support. I’m coming off a broken ankle and foot, so ankle support is key for me. Any recommendations TH-cam fam?
Love the quack or it should be the dog laugh from duck hunt. A make should be one up from Mario or coin noise lol. I guess I need to go putt because if I have enough time to comment I have enough time to practice 🙃
Don't start thinking for 1 second that body type can limit distance. I broke my collar bone 15yrs ago long before I'd heard of disc golf, it was bad I had plates and pins and got them removed after 8yrs, 1yr after I found disc golf. And I can throw pretty good. You're body will find a comfortable position once you start getting the technique which I'm still working on of course but any hindering you think your body could do, it'll find a way.
Added basket to my backyard and my friend Mike and I have been playing a challenge game of 15’ and back to 25’. 100 putts. It has really helped with my confidence in putting in tournaments as I don’t feel I’m miles away. Mike still can’t putt though……
I cant tell you how frustrating it is to be a power player and hit a homerun drive 20 ft from the pin just to par or bogey over and over bc i blow goats at putting im gonna try harder i guess , .. so frustrating , much love from your Oklahomies thanks for the video
Have you ever tried the scoober putt. I believe Brodie Smith has kind of mastered it but it seems like it could be a very useful tool in anyone's arsenal and I'm curious what your thoughts are on that?
I always thought I was a good putter. Because I put in the time, and I knew what it felt like when it came out good. However, the yips happened. Like about a month ago now? And it's still here. I don't know how to fixed it. I switched putting style, I created routines to match those styles. I think I'm crawling my way back. But it still hasn't felt like what it was before. Funny story how I think the yips happened: I was just watching PP's putting video (I think it might be from Uli's Scratch-to-Scratch series) and wanted to try to spin putt it. you know, just in case it wasn't possible to do my normal spush putt. It went downhill from there. The mixed-up styles confused the hell out of my muscle memory. So, I know that certain pros are like "practices all the styles so you can be a rounded putter". I have my reservation about this advice.
In my experience you definitely have to change something up to deal with yips. For me it happens at 15' and beyond, but not as much beyond 25', so I focused on smooth acceleration, and commitment, and that helped. I have yips less often now, and I didn't have to change my putting style, but I did have to change rate (focusing on smooth motion) and bumping up the commitment level at that range.
@@NickCarroll yeah I've been working on practicing within 15ft for confidence first. One thing about me is that I don't have depth perception because my eyes won't coordinate and work at the same time. So I tried spin putting because I thought it would eliminate one dimension (how high I should loft the disc) and focus mainly on one axis. Makes sense in theory, but I couldn't get my spin to release consistently enough.
Having played primarily team sport before playing disc golf, I learned to spend far more time practicing than actually playing in games. So I was initially quite surprised in how many disc golfers consider field work and putting practice to be a laughable waste of their valuable time. I believe that regularly practicing the most mediocre putting advice (is that grammatically correct?) is by far better than the greatest putting advice without practice.
I am always finding myself with discs or a "beverage" while goofing around. So much so that I have to a a disc or "beverage" in my other hand during rounds.
Noone ever talks about practicing putting under pressure. We used to play a game of "horse" or "pig" before a round. Just like basketball but at the practice basket.
Many. Many. Many. Used Bins. Hahaha but last year I knew that I was going to like it in that plastic. So I stood at the end of a trilogy challenge wirh a bin of discs. I just traded anyone that didn’t like it. Ended up with 16 discs. Sold 6 when I signed with Innova
“Jasper it” I remember this one time in Jasper, there was a certain 5 footer that got quacked🤣🤣 I’m not laughing at the missed putt but rather that reference.
Ha ha, I feel attacked, jk I find that category 5 happens when I start missing easy putts.... Def going to get back to the real life practice, so many people carry the extra disc while they're putting, cuz "that's how they practice" ... but, not sure why, I think it looks ridiculous, lol Anyway, thanks for making me realize I've been slacking on my putting practice... as always your videos make perfect sense and aren't too man-splained!! Good luck in your next event!
My putting doesn't even miss low, it just missed wide right. I also realize I through my putts on a hyzer when I am trying to let the disc flatten out. It's even worse when I am in like beyond 30ft I don't even make it to the basket, and I still can't figure out my problem.
So I am a noob and I never even thought about what my fingers were doing. Go figure I grabbed a disc and they are strait out!!! Guess I am going to have something to work on!!!

Yes that's the advise I received when learning archery many moons ago.
Always love watching some older videos for a refresher on some tips. I think what’s best is the slight goofy humorous things you do.
My favorite saying that I learned from my music teacher YEARS ago was "No, practice does NOT make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect." She was right, and it applies to all things you do! Great video as per usual!
sharing the old videos you sent to your coach discussing regression made this so relatable and i appreciate all the tips!!
I didn't know that Robbie C knew my putting was awful and that his tips would help. Thanks, Robbie C!!!

Dude this has got to be the funniest and yet most knowledgeable video u have posted yet!! Great video man!

You used my favorite phrase in the first tip! Practice makes permanent. I use that with my music students all the time and it's true in disc golf too.
This is one of the best putting videos I watched. Thank you.

Spot on fantastic advice, Robbie! Upped my putting game thanks to you 😊
So many great tips.
Super helpful, definitely gave me some things to think about!
Love it Robbie, I thank the biggest thing for me is just taking the time everyday and putt. It's so true, your not going to get better all the sudden one day unless you put the reps in
great video robbie, will be coming back to this one for sure!
Thanks Robbie this is perfectly timed, I would normally make putts around 40 feet confidently, and now 20 feet is giving me putting woes now
Your a life saver... More like a score saver! Thanks for th awesome video!
Always tuning in for the quacks tbh!
Man, that 3-finger curl might be the final piece of my particular puzzle. Appreciate ya!
This guy is awesome I love ❤️ how funny he is and how he get right up to the camera:)
Great info robbie, thank you. Glad to see you getting recognition too. Your chain clankers appearance was great. Keep it up and thanks again.
Best coach on the tube. subbed.
Love watching your videos man! You have been a great help with my disc golf game and you are one of the only channels my fiance will take advice from so thank you ! I hope you keep it up man and I am loving the in the bag podcast as well !
Thank You!! We’re on Apple Podcasts and Spotify with the podcast now too!!
Nice video. I am about to do my first lesson with Mike. Excited for the journey
I only recently found your channel but I am absolutely devouring your content. Great stuff!
Welcome to the channel!!
Your videos never disappoint!! Going to pick up some disc dots now 🙌
Love your vids brotha. Learning so much!
You're the Alton Brown of disk golf. Love it.
Great comparison. Taking complex concepts and explaining them simply.
I just got my practice basket today! I’m gonna be getting a lot of practice now. This video came at the perfect time
Great tips as always!
Love this! Very helpful! Thank you!
@@kenta3148 that’s helpful thank you!
I just want you to know that when I'm putting you screaming "Josh! OMG you're a great putter!" will be on a loop in my head from now on 👍
For one don't know why I wasn't subscribed so sorry for that. 2nd thanks for all the info and breaking it down like you do it helps alot
Great video man! Love it.
whole video summed up practice more, practice will build your muscle memory, focus (if your actually putting work in and not just throwing plastic around), all of which will build confidence on and off the course.
hahah 9:30 i actually spit out my wild berry big jerm pop tart laughing “double duty”
Great stuff! Thanks
at start i was hyzer putter but then i learned how to pop disc flat whit my fingers and it made my put way more consistent, tho i still miss still high and low but still on center line so im pretty happy on my putt.
Hey Robby, you have given me an idea. I’m going to attempt to throw 15 putts at every basket on a 9 holes course. Same range on every basket. The only thing that change should be the wind. Wish me luck.
I was doing something else while I was watching this and when you said my name (Josh) it freaked me out for a second lol great video Robbie!
I started as a push putt but the wind and inability to get the putter to the basket from circles edge made me take a step back. I total 3 steps back, and just tried to do what is natural.
turns out I was actually a spin putter and now it has take pressure off of my approaches and drive.
Great stuff
Robbie C providing us with the disc golf bible
I have enjoyed your content and appreciate the advice and journey. Really threw me off when you said 'Josh." Haha. Im gonna focus on that soundbite next tournament for a confidence boost.
Robby! Great video… again! How much of a factor has putter weight been for you? I went down in mid/driver weight and it has helped my game. I’ve seen videos about driver weight but nothing on putter weight.
For most I think the weight they stick close to max just to keep the wind as little a factor as possible!
Yes sir practice makes better
Mabe to some practice makes perfect, that's just my own opinion. Great stuff
Amazing video
Robbie, what shoes were you wearing? Looks like it had good ankle support. I’m coming off a broken ankle and foot, so ankle support is key for me. Any recommendations TH-cam fam?
Can’t believe no one brought up your awesome desktop wallpaper 😂 Most ambitious crossover in history?
Ohhh that’d be awesome!
Funny that I never really payed attention to my fingers while putting lol.. thanks for those tips .. 🔥🔥🔥
He just needs some more time with Henry. 😉😉
Don’t forget to practice extreme straddle putts simulating the balance of having a tree in your way!
What's your PC set up there, I liked that alot! ( FROM YOUR INTRO )
Every time I see something 100 thieves in your videos it makes me so happy. What esports are you into??
LoL is the main one!! Also been getting into WoW Dungeon speed runs!!
Noone ever talks about practicing putting under pressure. We used to play a game of "horse" or "pig" before a round. Just like basketball but at the practice basket.
Thank you.
Hey Robbie. I also put with the emac judge. Could I ask where you got that many trilogy challenge putters?
Many. Many. Many. Used Bins. Hahaha but last year I knew that I was going to like it in that plastic. So I stood at the end of a trilogy challenge wirh a bin of discs. I just traded anyone that didn’t like it. Ended up with 16 discs. Sold 6 when I signed with Innova
Thanks man. Love your content btw. Helped me become a much better disc golfer. I have only been playing 1 year and 3 months. Thanks for being awesome.
When my father taught me how to shoot a rifle he said to breathe out slowly as I pulled the trigger. I do the same with disc golf putts.
Thanks mr TH-cam man
100T RobbieC has a nice ring to it
5:42 This is one of my big goals.
“Jasper it” I remember this one time in Jasper, there was a certain 5 footer that got quacked🤣🤣 I’m not laughing at the missed putt but rather that reference.
🥴🥴🥴🥴 never forget
Ha ha, I feel attacked, jk
I find that category 5 happens when I start missing easy putts....
Def going to get back to the real life practice, so many people carry the extra disc while they're putting, cuz "that's how they practice" ... but, not sure why, I think it looks ridiculous, lol
Anyway, thanks for making me realize I've been slacking on my putting practice... as always your videos make perfect sense and aren't too man-splained!!
The fact that my 20' putts aren't automatic just makes "Jaspered the putt" hurt more...
I think of you everytime! I promise it’s not personal from my end!!!
@@RobbieCDiscgolf 😂
Immediately clicked for the quack sound effect.
I had a baseball coach tell us “Perfect practice makes permanent”.
So I am a noob and I never even thought about what my fingers were doing. Go figure I grabbed a disc and they are strait out!!! Guess I am going to have something to work on!!!
