    Great video! I've moved away from briquettes last year and will not return to them: lump charcoal is the best thing for cooking fast, very hot or long cooking and all this with no additive. And if your cooking is done earlier, you can smother your lump and re-use the rest the next day. But.. if I had the choice, I'd go B&B briquettes too.

      I miss typed by saying lump. Really like lump. It tends to be beat to death in shipping to mainly small pieces. So not cost efficient. I meant clean 100% hardwood briquettes. I understand the additives in blue bag. I don’t like that either. I just don’t like the burn I’ve gotten from b&b or jealous devil. They just seem to be to temperamental. Picked up a bag of royal oak briquettes. I’ll see how they do.

    • @OkieOily

      I tried the royal oak briquettes tonight on some Weber kettle chicken wings. Sadly I’m still giving blue bag the lead.
      Is there a secret that you have on how to aquire a full bag of lump charcoal that isn’t beat up into chips.

      B&B charcaol still seems to be the same. B&B lump, my opinion is the sizing is smaller. I don't mind the smaller sizing but that is my personal opinion, because the smaller sizing works better in smaller cookers.. like a weber kettle.

    My only issue with B&B is how fragile they are when you dump them lit out of the chimney. Only used Jealous Devil once so far for a pork butt smoke on the PK. Since it was cool and windy I was quite surprised I had so much left at the end. Pretty sure it burns hotter than B&B and maybe it lasts a little longer. Anyhow, I wonder how Cowboy’s all natural briquettes would compare since Walmart sells them at such a great price. Anyhow, I think to really test briquettes comprehensively you might need to spread an even bed across a Weber grate and see if they all stay lit. Don’t you hate it when they don’t? Few years ago Royal Oak tried selling their briquettes steeply discounted at Lowe’s around Memorial Day if I recall. I took back a bunch of bags because of that issue. To their credit Lowes was cool and gave me a credit or my money back.

      Hello David. Not sure about Cowboy's all natural briquettes but Cowboy is owned by Duraflame which also owns B&B. I wonder if they look the same... My fire really does not go out once I start it, that may be because I use lump on a regular basis. I rarely use briquettes any more.

      @@Viewtoagrill yeah it’s usually only cheaper briquettes that might die out on the grate and of course If you’re using a SnS or a Vortex it’s rarely an issue. Cowboy is a little smaller briquette but not as small and flat as Kingsford. Yeah, I’m a big black bag Fogo fan. Use it a lot in my PK especially.

    I came here because I am finally fed up with the repeated Kingsford disappointment, and wanted to make sure that it wasn't just me. For decades it was the go-to for 10x-millions of satisfied grillers.. but for some reason I am picturing a conversation taking place sometime in recent years over a mahogany table in the board of directors room at Kingsford.. when they all decided they could upgrade from their lowly old Lear 45s to everyone getting new Gulfstreams along with their 7th ski & golf vacation homes if they merely cut enough corners and screw enough customers who are loyal suckers enough to think they are still buying the king of coals.. which.. obviously.. we are not. So for those of us who are still flying Cessna 172s and staying at Holiday Inn Express… hmmmm… yeah… it’s definitely time to dump Kingsford forever and start cooking for real again.. and I thank you for posting this video to confirm it for me.

    Good comparision Johnny, although I had a strong suspicion B&B was going to be the winner. Those that frequent Steak cook offs (championships) favor using the B&B because of it's ability to reach those higher temps in their PK's. Higher temp's, long burn all add to a better sear and dependability in competition. I agree it's B&B for me, you can tell when opening the bag they're still whole and intact and although the Jealous devil looks good, "why pay more."

    I too prefer the B&B but at Walmart they are most always out-of-stock. They do have it at Ace Hardware and it's more expensive so you have to wait for a sale. If I'm running low I'll buy the Cowboy brand at Walmart, not my favorite but it's better than it used to be and you can't beat the price. One thing you might consider is taste test, cook something bland over each charcoal brand. Enjoyed the video!

    Interesting video Johnny. Basing these products on price is not a very accurate method. Prices very greatly on where you live, where you shop and time of year. Where I live in Washington state Kingsford is always less expensive then the other two. I have purchased B&B just to try it. It wasn't bad but i wasn't impressed either. The problem for me with JD is it's price. I'll give it a try some day, I think it might be helpful for a competition. But here's the thing about Kingsford. I have never had a bad bag, ever. Im 64 years old and I have never a any bad bags. Thats a great track record. And it's made in the USA. B&B is also made in the US. JD is NOT made in the USA. When I buy Kingsford I wait for it to go on sale then buy a pallet of it. That said good video Johnny. Have a great day. 😅🔥🍻👍

      Hello Victor, I agree price is not the most improtant which is why I demonstrated wich charcoal produced the most smoke, which brand ashed over the fastest, which brand got the hottest, which brand lasted the longest, which brand produced the most ash, and then which brand cost the least. ... that is 6 different points of review. After going through all of those the lower price of the B&B swung me to saying B&B was the best option for me.
      I even provided screen shots and a date when I took those screenshots for the price from the walmart website which is a national chain. I live in Texas, can't tell you what the price is at the local store in WA.
      I get what you are saying about made in the USA, I am not sure if you notice but I have a section in my description promoting USA products. Since Kingsford is Made in the USA I expect more quality out of them. They failed.

    • @victorbenner539
      @victorbenner539 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Viewtoagrill your price in Texas is good on B&B in Texas because it's made in Texas. Less shipping cost. Much more expensive here. Kingsford has 3 plants in the US. The nearest one to me is in Springfield Oregon. About a 3 hr drive from my home. Another concern I have with JD is it's made in Paraguay. The wood used is the Quebracho Blanco tree. Also called the "axe breaker" and is one of the densest woods in the world. But also one of the most endangered forests. I need to talk to Harry Soo about this sometime. It will be awkward. He's sponsored by them. I'm hoping it's not to terribly hot where you are today. It's been 100°f up here the last few days. That's really hot for up here. Later

So I tried them on my brand new charcoal smoker, an hour later they still smoke ( do not eat from them when smoking!) And only half ashed over. Not getting Kingsford any more!!! I guess if you are known to make very good meats using Kingsford, it could be attributed to all the extra smoke at the beginning of cooks. If you want a less smoky taste, definitely don't use Kingsford. I bet Kingsford R&D have designed their briquettes to smoke like that by controlling the density of the briquette. While your testing covered most of the checklist, the next test would be a smoky taste test by a panel of at least 6 people.
