  • We're continuing the expansion of our sort of realistic North American-themed city Riverview and its metropolitan area, by developing a truly massive cargo port / industrial harbor just north of the city, adding in extensive docks, lots of piers, TWO container cargo terminals, a railyard, a cargo rail terminal, complex highway infrastructure and interchanges, lots of railways and much more! Enjoy!

Maybe naming places after some key city founders (e.g. Patreons) explorers or Native American place names could be cool. I’d name the old port “River’s Rest”. Backstory is that it’s where explorers coming down the river moored their steamships historically and was turned into a small port when the city was first established.

Edit: misread the question and suggested names for the new port instead. But I'll leave it here... Well, the boring but probably more realistic name would be Newport. As for more interesting names, what about Riverbend? After all, that was the reason you placed the harbor in that spot. Riverbend could already have been the name of the forest that sadly had to make way for the port, but the name stuck around. I could see it formally being called Riverbend Harbor but people leaving away the "Harbor" bit and just called it Riverbend in everyday parlance. Maybe they'd even shorten it to the Bend.
And for some sillier and not at all appropriate ones: Starboard (since Port is already taken), or Port McPortface.
All that said: great series of videos! You've gotten me quite stoked about this sim. Haven't played any city builder sim since the original Sim City, but have watched quite a few videos in recent years. Once there's more content and some of the kinks have been ironed out I'll get started with the enormous learning curve for CS2.

Yeah, he is able to coax this game into looking decent, which is difficult. He also apparently runs it on some sort of super-computer. This game is a let-down. The building models are bad, and no procedural generation, and no vector based zones. Sorry, it's almost 2024, this game should be better, and they shouldn't have all the issues with performance either.

A technical University would be great as a second location for the university in the "old" harbour.
Would also fit into the storyline as the old university was to small for the growing city and the new chemical plant in the harbour development needed lots of STEM students they partnered and used the now abandoned land in the old port, which is where the chemical company was located beforehand
Edit: if there isn't enough space you should probably built it near the new port as a part of that development as I just noticed how big that asset is

The old port could be named 'Riverview lock' - Like Camden Lock in London, an innner city body of water which is surrounded by a Market and housing, with a bunch of pedestrian paths and bridges over the water could look really cool! Although I don't know if that's typically found in America...

    • @thecosmickid545

I know it's probably too late, but it would be cool if it's in the shape of an oxbow - as though it was built in an oxbow lake. It would make more sense than huge excavations or a typical lake off the the side of the river. Perhaps it could've been called 'Oxport'.

For the name suggestion for the old Port of Riverview perhaps you would consider calling it "Riverview Quays"? The old Port of Riverview certainly has the look and layout of an aged industrial district that served this city while it was smaller, but seeing that the city is now a megahub of commerce it has been converted into an entertainment area where people can walk along the riverbank going to see the sites, go to restaurants, cinema complexes and malls. Reminds me a bit of Circular Quay in Sydney :)
Just a suggestion, love the series!

  • @SLENDAMANN
    @SLENDAMANN 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

I suggest naming the port simply "North Harbor" (It's in the north right?)
The naming is simple, but based on what was done in Aalborg, Denmark. In postwar period, Aalborg Harbor was an enormous harbor spreading across the entire inner city of Aalborg and Nørresundby (you can find satelitte imagery showing the extent of it - almost all of these cities were just harbor basically). At some point in the 60s, it was decided that the Greenlandic trade was to move from Copenhagen to Aalborg - this necessitated expanding the harbor, but there was no room. A new harbor was established to the east of Aalborg (similar to here with Riverview), and over time, that harbor has expanded while the inner city harbor has been decomissioned slowly over the past 50 years, making room for highrise buildings, offices and modern culture. Some parts of the inner city harbor remain, but these will also be moving out east to make room for modern city development. This new harbor to the east of the old harbor is, very simply, called "Østhavnen" - [The] East Harbor (or port, if one insists).
The stories between Riverview and Aalborg are basically identical - so I propose using the same naming convention.

Honestly all that's missing is actually satisfying the growing demand for everything else. I really think it's time to up zone basically everything in the actual city and create some new suburbs / low density outside the city expanding it more and more. Also make sure you get fire and police coverage in the new harbor area. Technical university would be awesome in the "Old Port" area as people have pointed out. Congrats on this awesome city! Can't wait for the next episode.

  • @colea6442

Rename the original port to ‘Old Riverview’. I take inspiration from Felixstowe, UK which is home to the port of Felixstowe, the largest shipping container port in the UK. As the Port of Felixstowe was built, and Felixstowe expanded south with new developments for workers, the old part of Felixstowe became known as ‘Old Felixstowe’, maintaining its old docks and local ferry line. In recent years Old Felixstowe has seen an influx of investment and development of new, spacious apartment style homes with parks and pedestrian spaces. I feel like Riverview is mirroring this development and behaviour. Great content as always 👍

In the *New* Port of Riverview, you could add Riverview Regional Bus Terminal. It would act as secondary bus terminal which takes care of regional, express, long-route and city-to-city lines as well as outer-county direct-routes, and removes those mentioned regional routes from coming all the way into Downtown Riverview, and as a result frees space and conjuction on the roads in Downtown.
(We have this in Oslo with regional bus terminals in the non-inner part of the city (there are two; Lysaker station (train-bus connection + Office District as well) and Helsfyr T (metro-bus connection) btw.)
And man, those shots of the city in the end were superb

The local brewery with the fun mascot moved into the old harbor building and never looked back. I would recommend going there when on a visit to Riverview. If you have a chance to visit during fall, the german style october fest at Harbor East Plaza is immensely fun for the whole family. Love that they still have the old blues bar with live music every saturday - for those who knew it back then, when ths area was still Riverview's main harbor - it hasn't changed at all! even the cute waitress is still there!

Here's a suggestion for renaming "Port of Riverview" to "Belfast Port." This choice is inspired by the fact that the Titanic was constructed at this port on March 31, 1909. Given the relatively modest sizes of both Belfast Port and Riverview Port, I believe this name is fitting also i live in Northern Ireland, specifically Tandragee, and with Belfast being the capital I think this name is appropriate.

In the old port you might create (if it's possible) some parking lots for the boats/yachts, in this way also adding some recreation staff...

The only problem with your videos is that it’s wayy too short, I’d like to binge watch 2 hours straight of you building your city. Love the quality and the gorgeous build!!

Those quay walls sure worked great! For a name, I immediately thought of Baltimore's "Inner Harbor," as it fits perfectly for Riverview. I thihnk you could either make it a warehouse/gritty/cool place, or load it with mixed use, restaurants, entertainment (sports field, aquarium, etc)...

What you're saying about the old port is very similar to what was done with Canary Wharf in London, I would suggest calling it Chirper Wharf. You have Chirperbank Field in the city nearby, so perhaps Chirper Wharf is where all the high rise headquarters for banks like Chirperbank would be. Maybe you could even transform it into a financial sector for your city, with the Central Bank building being placed there surrounded by high rise offices.

God the cinematic view at the end alone was enough to earn a sub from me. That music is so great. It genuinely feels like I'm watching the end credits scene of a movie
I love stuff like this, but my own cities are usually terribly cluttered and without much thought. Monkey brain seees green bar and builds residential, and gets the dopamine hit when it zones in.
Appreciate the work, this can't have been easy to edit

You could name the inner harbor Northside Wharf.
What was once Riverview’s main harbor quickly became too small for the growing increase of water-borne traffic. As such the city had begun designs of a massive new harbor to the north of the city. However, this left the question of the old port that had once brought cargo in for the residents on the waterfront and backroads. After the completion of the new harbor the city made it’s final decision and renamed the old harbor “Northside Wharf” as a leisure and recreational area for the citizens in and surrounding the sprawling neighborhood of Northside. Although the railway system largely became redundant and lightly used, it was to be repurposed as a train museum for the locals to see. All that remains of the once central harbor is a few empty cargo containers sitting next to the train museum.

Thank you for the great content, you inspire me a lot when I build and I got lots of tips from you especially with road building! The city looks amazing can’t wait to see what’s coming next! With all the negativity around this game, let’s take a moment to realize this is a 100% vanilla city without any mods or DLCs, and it looks spectacular!

I'd name the previous port 'The distillery district' - the previous industry focussed on producing, bottling, and shipping spirits. That industry faltered during the prohibition, and the buildings were redeveloped into housing, although hipster residents appreciate both the old views and the history of the location.
Not an original idea - many cities have such a district (e.g. Toronto) but a nice one nonetheless! Would be lovely to add a few unique assets once modders start making them - residential units with old industrial chimney stacks etc!
