Happy birthday. Octane- is concerned only with detonation. Consult your owners manual and follow it's recommendation. Using higher octane than recommended just hurts your pocket book. Using lower than recommended on newer vehicles usually just causes the computer to adjust to compensate and reduces performance. On older vehicles it damaged sparkplugs first and pistons soon after.
One of the reasons I left Upstate NY in the 80's was because of that kind of weather. That and I an a Master Auto Tech and was tired of working on rust bucket cars,Retired now. People have to buy a new car every 3-4 yrs. because of the rust problem. I love it in the Southern Wa state area, same vehicles for 20 yrs. and a 1997 328I E36 BMW that is still rust free.;)
