Her face when she got told that's her on the picture... I can't even begin to imagine what life must be like for her.

literally made me want to cry, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult eveyday must be, and I hate watching this going through the emotions when they ask her "do you recognise this face" as if her answer is going to change

It goes beyond faces to things like cars, logically. Inability to recognize shape-relations.

I understand that it was necessary for the producers to put her through that to demonstrate the condition, but the more I watched the more I felt that they were just being cruel. Poor Woman to not be able to recognize you own face.

I had a hard time sitting through this video, she was so obviously distressed and nothing useful was being unveiled through the repeated test. The message would have gotten through just as well if they stopped at the polaroids, so why prolong her suffering?

@@ReginaldTheRooster why are u people so judgemental.. they did not intend to make her suffer.. even she probably agreed to do the test and experiment in the first place.. it was in her own consent to do so.. and i believe this experiment is also intended to raise awareness among common people about this cognitive disability.. so we may get enlightened and understand about how they feel, what they are facing that make them even unable to recognize their own face.. i believe it is intended so we may embrace and have deeper understanding on those poor people..

@@marsel4812 you're right. I think the difference maker here is whether they got her informed consent on what they'd be doing to her. Based on her reactions it doesn't seem like they did. Maybe she's a good actor, maybe they were intentionally vague with the information they gave her, maybe it was like most older psychology research and it was horribly unethical.

I have this problem since I was born. It bothers me a lot and drives me crazy. I can only recognize my parents BY VOICE. I feel anxious when going to crowded places because I wouldn't be able to recognize my company if we got separated. I have trouble making friends because I react like a stranger when they say hello. I get frustrated all the time and it makes me less inclined to acquaint new person. No one seems to understand my condition when I try to talk about it but I don't blame them. In order to compensate this, I have to remember one's voice, build, the way they dress. It doesn't always work out for me but It helps me get some friends that I had. It's hard for me to talk about this because I had given up explaining my condition long time ago.

It makes you unique and that can be used as a positive. It's really interesting and shows the amazing complexities of the human brain. I'm very incapable of understanding and memorizing the difference between pronouncing a word as it is written when in fact it is pronounced differently. For example colonel or epitome. I am incapable of getting the proper way through my head and in learning new words and definitions in general. Since this doesn't impact other people really it isn't seen as a big deal compared to facial difficulties.

I have prosopagnosia and it is a terrible thing to experience . Some times in my life it was not so bad but it's killing me now. There's a movie that came out maybe 15 years ago give or take a few years , it was called "50 First Dates" That's what prosopagnosia is like. What has made it so bad for me is too many people lie and play games these days and don't listen. I need to be around honest intelligent people so I can get better because like I said it's killing me .

I would encourage you to ask God why you have this. Expect an answer and He will give you one. Also if you read the Bible at all you will see Jesus healed people. He can do the same for you. I don't say all of this to be some crazy Bible thumper, but because He healed me of a different condition in my brain.
I hope and pray you are doing well and that you can find hope in Jesus because He seriously wants to help you. Please let Him. I love you and God bless xoxo

  • @anoukpeereboom1473
    @anoukpeereboom1473 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I'm studying cognitieve psychology right now. Face recognition depends on complex relationships created by the face's overall configuration - the spacing of the eyes realtive to the length of of the nose, the height of the forehead relative to the width of the face, and so forth. People who suffer form prosopagnosia generally have normal vision. They can gerenerally tell you whether a face is a man's or a woman's, and whether it belongs to someone young or old. But they cannot recognize those individual features. They cannot recognize their own parents or children, whether from photographs or 'live'. They even cannot recognize themselves, sometimes they're looking in the mirror at some stranger when, in truth, they're looking at themselves. This is caused by brain damage of a specific area responsible for recogninzing faces: the fusiform face area. When I read and see this I am so thankfull I don't have this brain disorder! How many things we indeed take for granted! I hope she gets understanding and much love from people in her surroundings, because this I think is so hard for her to have.

This is pretty accurate, I’ve had it since birth so I don’t really see having prosopagnosia as anything but normal. But it’s not that I can’t see faces it’s just that once I look away from someone I have no idea what they look like. What sucks the most about having it is that all the conversations I have with people just blur together because I can’t remember which person told me what.

The reason she can't recognize faces is that her temporal lobe has been damaged. Often times we take our unconscious processes for granted because we don't know what life would be like without them. For this woman, she is completely unable to recognize anybody. Every person she sees is a complete stranger--no matter who they are, and the sight of their faces doesn't stir up any form of recognition or memory.

I believe I have this disorder, though not nearly to this extent. The intensity to which people have it is a spectrum, with this woman being at the high end and me probably at the low end. For me, a lot of people look similar, which makes it kinda difficult, but not impossible to get to know a person's face. It just takes time to memorize faces.
Short story: Just the other day, my hairdresser I've been going to for years said "hello" to me at an autumn/fall party and I looked hard at her and could not for the life of me figure out who she was. In my head, she looked like 1000 other women I have seen (granted, she was wearing glasses and I didn't expect her to be there, so that also threw me off). I said "who are you?" and her mouth dropped... lol. But I instantly recognized her when she told me who she was, so I told her I'd see her in a few weeks for a haircut :)

Shouldn’t put all your eggs in that basket.
It isn’t like she absolutely cannot tell people apart. Voice, mannerisms, dressing style, body types, hair color/style, ethnicity (yes) etc. all go into forming the person. It isn’t like everyone is an indistinguishable automaton.
There’s so much other material to go off of that face blind people (at least the mild cases) can go years without realizing the issue. Difficulties are chalked up to “inattentiveness”, because that’s the pseudo-moral interpretation of social-addicts. A more relevant challenge is people demand you know them by their face alone and might retaliate if you fail to do so.

My face recognition is weird and pretty terrible. I can differentiate two faces when shown both but then I think that a great many of faces are very similar to the point where I would mix my friend's face with a stranger's face. I can tell if I like a face or not though.
When I look at my own face - I almost see a blank space. I tried many times to describe my own face and categorize it but can only remark on the *most* obvious details.

I guess its a fluid border between prosapognosia and bad face recognition. I am so used to it that in movies and real life I have so many often subconscious ways to tell people apart that many times it doesn't even seem like I hab a problem. E.g. I can tell from the way a character behaves if he's a main character or not. But if there is no context at all (which rarely happens in movies) and different/not remembered voice, clothes etc. I can forget very, very long known people :-)

  • @shepd3
    @shepd3 11 ปีที่แล้ว

As someone who has a tough time with faces, the only picture that stood out as incorrect was the one on the right. The grey hair gave it away. I guessed the correct picture--however, for the exact same reason she did. The shirt.
I also didn't guess the second slide correctly--I guessed it was her mother, again.

  • @fairynefertari

I don't recognize people outside the context they "belong to". I cannot picture faces as a whole (also family members)but only some details, which are the cues I use to recognize people, for example :scars, moles, make up style, skin tone. I cannot picture facial features (for example eyes or nose) but I can describe them using words. For example I can remember that a person I know has "big round eyes" but I cannot picture the eyes and they shape in my mind. Voice recognition helps me a lot.

i have this too not as severe as this women though mine is mild, i have to find another thing about them, like shoes or their coat or something to recognize them. And i usually say hi and see if they respond and then i can figure out if i know them or not. Even friends sometimes it takes awhile to recognize them Its pretty embarassing at school and work and when i just met somebody its near impossible for me to remember them. I totally get what you said about generic small talk! its a pain tho..

When asked to pick out her mom from those photographs, why couldn't she tell from the backgrounds in the pictures?? They were all different, and she should remember where she was when she took the picture...

  • @elgmalone

@RHIANNAKM It wouldn't matter because they were showing her random pictures. If they were showing her pictures of a particular group of people and she knew her picture was in there somewhere, the hair texture / style might have tipped her off that it was her. That picture could have literally been anyone and pictures from the neck up are the most difficult. There's no height, body type, or movement to use as clues. Hair can only help so much but you still to put it in context.

That is absolutely fascinating! I've never heard of this before. I'd bet there was a decison or a command like "everone looks the same" or "can't recognize anyone" or something simular connected to a moment of massive pain/injury and that blocks the ability to recognize the faces or simply makes them look the same in her mind. Find that moment, find the connection and it will most probably "unlock".

Okay, can people stop making this condition look like a total tragedy? Sure, it might be harder for me to recognize people without their usual style, voices and hair, but people usually have hair and clothes. Just because I can’t immediately recognize others or myself doesn’t mean I’m constantly suffering or don’t see faces.

Yes, if a persons face is unique, or it's general appearance, or even a very unique detail, i will recognize him/her. I do recognize emoticons (if i didn't i would not even know wheher your face was a face or not).
You have to imagine this like some sort of insecurance about what you feel who that is...there are so many details for my brain - personality, voice, context...that most of the time there is only one option on who that is. Unless the person is a very unique one, i will first categ...

So would getting a small tattoo on your own face help things slightly? It's the psychical features, nose, eyes, mouth that can't be matched up but you got a distinctive tattoo that doesn't register as a facial feature then I imagine it would at least help you recognize your own face.

    • @Jotari

I think the sadder part about this is the fact that her prosopagnosia was caused by an injury, so in her case she's lost something. I'm 4'9" so the way I can tell myself in a picture with other people is because I'm usually the shortest one and if that doesn't work I usually can use certain context and place myself from what I might have been wearing one day. However there was a wedding I was a bridesmaid in a few years back and all of use were wearing the same color dress

I may have lost someone who I love so much because of this impairment. I have a very high IQ and so does she. I pray she reads this and understands why I didn't know who she was. Half way home I did. Went back and she was gone. TBI did me a bad number. Hurts a lot.

Look up Bill Choisser. He wrote an online book about prosopagnosia and he too has a problem with interpreting what he hears. I asked to have a phone conversation with him once and he turned me down for that reason.
