Aktually there was a reset in counting the years :) 10191 meant A.G. (After Guild) which is the year where the spacing guild was foundet. In our time, it would be something like the year 25000

Woah spot on. The Emperor's play here was on most levels pretty smart, and you caught the subtle detail that it was meant to completely eradicate House Atreides and thus their threat of leadership, but more cunningly that it also completely eradicated the financial power of the Harkonnens. That wealth was even greater than the wealth of the Emperor. The conflict nearly bankrupted even the Harkonnens immense reserves due to the cost of transporting their forces, concealment of parts that needed concealing such as the Sardaukar, and hiring the Sardaukar.

    Glad you liked it!
Indeed, the story is quite compelling but worldbuilding needs its time, and they stayed pretty close to the original story and scenes of the book. Some details were omitted, but that's unavoidable when adapting such a lore-heavy book. As to give you some additional info on the lore and politics of the Duniverse, so it becomes a bit more clear:
You have 4 major powerblocks in this universe:
1)The Emperor (and his army, the Sardaukar)
2)The Landsraad, consisting of a dozen Great Houses (and many Minor Houses, all vying for power). Think Game-of-Thrones here, but in sci-fi setting. ;-)
3)The Bene Gesserit; a semi-religious Order of women whom have certain powers (like the Voice, or being a Truthsayer, and some others not shown yet) and exert a lot of behind-the-scenes influence, but mostly stay low-profile
    4) The Guild Navigators and CHOAM; a strong mercantile power, with a monopoly on spacetravel
It was more or less explained in the beginnings when Paul talked with his dad on Caladan: House Atreides is a growing power, politically and military, and the Emperor feels threatened. But he can't directly attack the House, because otherwise the Landsraad (the ensemble of Great Houses) will turn against him. As said, they each constitute a "big power" in this Duniverse. So the Landsraad and the Emperor keep each other in check, as it were.
Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are working from the shadows, on both sides - they primarily are concerned with their own plans and devices, to create the Kwizatsh Haderach. So they manipulate from the shadows and actually form the third great power in this universe, but seldom show it openly. They also exert power by political marriages, or become concubines for political advantages - which is why Jessica wasn't married to Leto, though it was done to benefit him and House Atreides, not herself or the Sisterhood.
The fourth independent power, which is hardly touched upon in this first part of the movie, is CHOAM and their Spice Guild. They're like a huge mercantile power, and the Guild Navigators are the only ones able to move/teleport between planets, so without them, there would be no viable interstellar Imperium. Which make them essential and an enormous powerhouse as well - though, of course... they are and remain dependent on the Spice. That's why: whom controls Arrakis, controls the Empire.
So the Emperor can't directly attack a Great House like Artreides, or he risks all-out war with the Landsraad, consisting of the other Great Houses. Instead, he uses an indirect attack, with and through the Harkonnens - who want their fiefplanet back with all the Spice - doing the grunt work for him. The emperor knows they will be easily instigated that way, certainly because the Atreides and Harkonnen already have a centuries-old feud going on between them. It's a sort of proxy war, thus. He does help the Harkonnen to make sure they'll win - hence why he sends a few battalions of Sardaukar, his elite troops. But no-one (especially the Landsraad) may know about that. (That's also why they killed Liet, because she was going to expose the Emperor's meddling).
Also, some details one might have missed in the movie: About the time in which the story plays: in the beginning of the movie they show it's the year 10191, but this is not 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG. AG (After Guild - when the Spice Guild was made and started exploring the stars), and BG (Before Guild) are the iterations used and the lore in the books gives some indication as how that relates to our AD (Anno Domini). The most precise date - with a high level of accuracy - is that the first Dune novel which is set in 10,191 AG, corresponds approximately to 23,148 AD. It is mentioned the "space age" takes place in 11,000 BG, and assuming this would mean it began in 1957 AD as this is when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched, we can rebuild the whole timeline to our AD. So if you add the year 11,000 BG to 10,191 AG you’re left with a time span of 21,191 years. So if you add 21,191 years to 1957 AD, you’re left with 23,148 AD as the most likely date. Quite some time! Most casual watchers of the movie think it's almost 10000 years in the future, but it's actually more than twice as much!
Now...as far as the melee fights and old/new tech are concerned, it's important to realize that in the Duniverse, while there is very high-tech at CERTAIN aspects, others are low tech (which gives the retro-feeling of the movie) but with a reason. It may seem strange at first sight, but note, however, that this has an in-story explanation, namely: thousands of years ago, there was a rebellion against "thinking machines" (AI) called the Butlerian Jihad. Humanity won (barely), but since that time there is a very strong taboo on creating anything resembling robots or AI, and humanity started to develop their own powers (aided by the melange/spice), such as Mentats (basically human supercomputers). This is the reason you don't see any highly developed robots, AI or even computers in this world.
This mix of old and new tech is a defining, historically explained element of the Duniverse; it's part of the worldbuilding and lore. Now, specifically about the melee combat: maybe you missed it, but they explained the shields in that fighting scene; they said "the slow sword can penetrate it". This is a hint that ALL objects with high kinetic energy are stopped dead in their tracks when hitting the shield, but SLOW objects can penetrate it. Meaning: ALL of our "modern" warfare weapons would largely become obsolete: machine-guns and all fast moving shells/bullets etc. become useless, but swords and knifes that are SLOWLY moved can still reach a target through the shields. Making the use of swords and knifes, after thousands of years, the dominant way of fighting once again. It's actually a cool twist.
That's all I'm going to say about it, because any more would get you into spoiler territory for part 2! ;-)
Hope that made things more clear!

Of course the Bene Gesserit's influence is a complete secret, and thus power is said to reside in a tripod in the Dune Universe. When of course in fact the sisterhood has ultimate capacity to steer all currents. Or so they think.

    • @AniMageNeBy
      @AniMageNeBy ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@pseudonymousbeing987 It's true that the Bene Gesserit posses the most influence, since they are able to manipulate all the other powers. At least until the God-Emperor comes along...
Choam and especially the Spice Guild does pose a fourth power though; remember they (spoiler-alert) refused to obey the orders of the emperor when they could see that going against Paul when he gained control of Arrakis meant losing the Spice. They're also the ones that refused to put satellites around Arrakis, even though the Baron and the emperor asked for it in the past. They're not completely subservient to the Emperor, thus. And even the emperor couldn't meddle too much with them, or he couldn't maintain his empire anymore.

    • @Nr4747
      @Nr4747 ปีที่แล้ว

@@studiowatcher It's important to note that that CHOAM isn't really an indipendant great power in the universe of Dune, but rather a method of wielding economic power through shares of and powerful positions within the company. Most shares of CHOAM are owned by the Emperor's house, House Corrino, but the other great houses of the Landsraad also have significant shares and are also part of the board of directors.
The Bene Gesserit mostly just pretend to be a religious order, their true motives lie far beyond religion and they would probably scoff at the idea of being bound by superstition if forced to speak truthfully. Over lots of generations of selective breeding ("crossing of bloodlines") and intense training, they have achieved a much higher degree of control over their bodies and minds than most humans ever could imagine. This is also why Lady Jessica is a much faster runner than Paul despite being an older, pregnant woman - it's also why she is such a good fighter and called "a weirding woman" by Stilgar. The "Weirding Way" is the fighting style of the Bene Gesserit and allows them to move with almost superhuman speed and agility.

Yueh was kinda given the shaft in the movie. He was a beautifully troubled character and in this scene he actually got exactly what he wanted.
He knew his wife would be dead at best. That is what he wanted. For her to be dead and himself dead as well.
The reason he came to the Baron was for confirmation.
His wife was a Bene Gesserit and had Truthsayer capabilities and a little of that she taught to Yueh.
Yueh came before the Baron here mostly so that he could confirm Wanna's death. And the Baron told the truth. Wanna was dead and Yueh died happy.
Another detail I kind of dislike they changed for the movie is the Baron's shield.
It was on in the book... but not because the Baron had the frame of mind to turn it on.
Simply because he forgot to turn it off.
This fit the Baron's personality more, I feel.
He isn't all that smart. Devious and brutal, but most of his intelligence lies in his mentat. Once Pieter was dead the Baron is basically a moronic infant who fucks up everything he does.
    He survived for two reasons.
Chance and Pieter gasping, giving him enough time to flee.

1:03 -- "Usually something happens. A reset." Correct. And then they start counting again on a new calendar. In this case, they got to 10,191 AG (not AD). The movie is set roughly 24,000 years from now, not 8,000 years.

The poems are beautiful and spoil a lot while spoiling nothing.
There once was a man so wise
He jumped into a sandy place
And burned out both his eyes.
And when he knew his eyes were gone

Something I don't think the movie quite portrayed quite right was Yueh's decision. A lot of viewers think he is foolish for trying to bargain with the Baron and not realising that his wife was probably already dead, but the books make it clear that Yueh knew his wife was most likely dead already... His plan was twofold - firstly to confirm his suspicion that she is no longer suffering, and secondly to exact revenge on the Baron, knowing it'll cost him his life as well. He also had to ensure his assassination attempt can even get close enough to the Baron which is why it also cost the Duke's life as well, it had to be a convincing betrayal, and he knew the Baron would want to directly confront the Duke before killing him. Apart from the Baron still being nervous enough to put his shield on in close proximity to the Duke which saved his life, the plan went as Yueh expected.

I'm a huge fan of the book, and while much of the intrigue that was in the book didn't make the final cut, the effects, sound, and visuals in this movie made up for it.
Personally, I don't believe that this, or any movie can truly capture the transcendent nature of the book, but with that being said, this movie managed to far exceed my expectations.
Very similar in how The Lord of the Rings trilogy omitted a lot of what was in the books for the sake of pacing, and this movie does the same thing. Several key characters and scenes from the book were absent, with the important dialogue getting delivered by other characters.
But at least this director didn't invent a concept as corny as a "weirding module" in order for this movie to work. lol
