As I bike rider myself I understand some not wanting to wear a helmet, the feeling is different. I used to think that way as well until I had an accident and my left arm got shattered (luckily i was able to fully recover). I was wearing a helmet, which saved me from head injuries.
With that being said, there´s still a difference between a helmet and a car seat-belt: wearing a seat-belt prevents you from flying through your car and maybe causing another accident due to that. Wearing a helmet does not prevent you from flying, you will fly either way, with or without it.

I broke my collarbone and three ribs flying over the handles of a motorcycle when I was a teen. I was alone and had to crawl back home for about 1/2 mile. It was probably the worst pain I've been in. I had my airbrushed cobra head football jersey on, and the nurses at the hospital had to cut it off me and told me to hang it up like a poster. That was the worst of it. As my mom drove me to the hospital I was so thirsty. She stopped and got me apple juice. I still remember that glorious apple juice. Best apple juice ever.

I teach people how to ride motorcycles for a living, teaching 4 levels of classes, up to police-rider level. I would love to see everybody choose to wear a helmet, but you can't legislate people into being safe. Bikers in Cali have to wear helmets, but choose helmets that are basically useless to skirt the regulation. Let people choose their own fate.

splitting lanes is alot safer when done proper.. But... There are a bunch of idiots who do it recklessly. I live in kansas where lane splitting is illegal but we all do it anyways at stop lights because like i said before it is safer. If you park in a line of cars like normal at a stop you run the risk of the idiot behind you not seeing and not stopping which puts you in the middle of a car or truck sandwich.
Also collar bones are super easy to break out of my friends i'm the only one of a couple who haven't broke it.. yet..

There is a UK bike journalist, who's life was saved because he was wearing the best Arai helmet money could buy.
He was knocked off his bike & a black cab, a Hackney, drove right over his head. They're built like tanks, really heavy & I doubt any other helmet could have taken such abuse.
Helmet laws are great, but some are badly written & would allow you to legally wear a cereal bowl on your head. You should always budget for the best helmet possible, I liked AGV, they made some good quality helmets that were affordable.

I think lane splitting is okay to do in stand still traffic. But people get too confident and start speeding inbetween cars. You can not react quick enough for slight changes when you're going that fast. And this is coming from someone who rides. I'm from Chicago and always wear a helmet, I feel naked without one. Seen two motorcycle crashes in LA, both happened in summer a few weeks apart. Both could've been prevented if the rider was just a little more cautious. First one, a guy on a Kawasaki Ninja, clearly speeding, lost control and slid under stopped SUV on Westwood Blvd. Tried to walk away, fell over.
Second one happened at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Sunset Blvd. Guy on a Honda CBR tried to split between a van and Camry. He didn't expect an Acura to be at a full stop in front of them, slammed into that car's trunk, flew over the back of the vehicle and landed face first on the curb (helmet on). Ouch. Tried to collect his mangled bike from the road. Forced to sit down by pedestrians. Acura left the scene.
Speed kills, you are not invincible on a bike (even if you feel that way while riding). Slow the hell down.

The stories were so horrific that it turned me off my dream of one day learning to ride lol. One of the worst was when she told me how this guy went flying face forward into the highway and they literally had the skin of his face pulled down to his mouth and his entire skull was exposed and they were trying to re-graft his skin back into his face. Just gnarly, gnarly stuff. It’s insane to me that it’s legal to ride around without a helmet considering all the other wacky safety enforcements they have in place in modern society.

Landed shoulder first into a whoop (small steep hill which can be brutal when slammed into) and it still didnt break! I did dislocate my shoulder and fractured my shoulder blade but my collar bone was intact.

Coming from someone who wears a helmet 99% of the time, there are legitimate times when a helmet makes riding more dangerous IMO. For example, try wearing a full helmet in traffic when it's over 85 degrees in Ohio. It's pretty much like a locked car in their when the sun is hitting it. You will litterally pass out at a red light after 10mins if you are not moving which is a huge reason that some states (mainly states with higher temperatures) legalized lane splitting. The other reason is that you are limiting your senses and lose some awareness while wearing a helmet, especially when you are going under 45mph around town and the wind noise is still pretty quiet. Try wearing a helmet while driving your car and you will notice how valuable being able to hear and have peripheral vision is. If you turn your head to look left or right before say an intersection to make sure someone isn't going to run a yellow/red light as you are approaching with a helmet on, you are blind and deaf to the opposite direction from what your are looking. The reason the majority of Harley riders will ever wear a helmet unless they are required is because their 700lbs-1200lbs+ bike is not maneuverable, so they really need that extra awareness. I hate to say this but loud pipes have haves my life at least once. People never hear me on FZ6 because it has the stock exhaust on it. I hated riding with straight drag pipes because it was annoying to even me, but I rarely had people pull out in front of me with that bike.

If you dont you get stopped by the police and ticketed. You may not understand why I dont like wearing helmets and I don't understand why you like going outside without being dressed properly for the weather. It doesn't matter. Cars vs motorcycles... it's a question of one set of risks against another set. While the steel cage of a car does protect you in some situations, in others it can trap you instead, as in a freeway pile up from which there's no escape.

I think people should wear helmets on motorcycles and seatbelts in cars. I'm on the fence as to whether or not either should be a law. If the laws were removed, I would still wear both.

Federal helmet laws have been eroded state by state since the 80's. At this point, 30 out of 50 U.S. states do not require a helmet for riders over 18 years old. And we wonder why motorcycle fatalities have increased over the years.

I always wore a helmet when I had my motorcycles but mainly for comfort, warmth, and to keep bugs off my face. The guys that argue against helmets say "what's a helmet gonna do if some asshole turns in front of me at 60 mph" and I understand their argument too. I just personally prefer to wear one. I also broke my collar bone playing football w/ my dad when I was younger and it's the only bone I've ever broken so don't tell me it's the hardest bone to break. Tony Romo probably doesn't believe it either!

Splitting lanes is not a problem. Its just idiots who go to fast. If your splitting lanes you should never go 10mph faster than the cars your passing. In the UK its legal and I've never had a issue in 8 years. For me it's the only way to travel during the holidays. The journey could take 2 hours in a car but 45 mins on a bike

You gotta Ride in Defense Mode the second you start that bike. I enjoy riding my Harley without a helmet. I can ride safer because I can see & hear much better. Also, I’m in Texas & many riders have No Idea that it’s Law that you must wear a helmet unless, you have completed a 2 stage DOT Training Course. Once you complete that course? You’ll receive a Sticker to place on your bike & card to carry in case your pulled over. Most all Cops have no idea about this.

How do they not understand the difference between 'no helmet law' and 'helmet law' states. Three States have no law about it, 19 require all riders to wear helmets, the rest have partial helmet laws requiring certain groups to wear them. A 'no helmet law' dose not mean they are forbidden, you can still wear one.

I can't wear a helmet; I have a bad back. The weight of a helmet gives me a migraine after about 20 minutes. I'm in pain daily and if I hit the ground I don't want more pain I don't want to get up off of the pavement. Lane splitting is actually safer because it allows riders to get away from congested traffic where there is a higher chance of being hit.
