The "SIMPLE" life in Finland just isn't American

  • Before the comments blow up, "simple" is the term in comparison to the hectic life I once lived in America. The society I once knew that everything was work, and a large amount of Americans strive for a dream that is more or less artificial, because we are raised to believe that is our purpose. In this video I wanted to breakdown a little bit of how living in Finland has changed my mindset and how I truly get to experience a much more "simple" life with unparalleled comfort that I hadn't known before.
    Finland continues to surprise me, and perhaps this is what every foreigner living abroad experiences in development and self evolution, or may it's just a Finnish culture shock. Either way I am enjoying this journey and learning something knew everyday. Here's to continuing my life in finland

    You nailed it! I just recently read about some guy who was upset about moving to Finland and finding out not every is chasing money and wanting become a billionaire. Finland is such a lovely place to live. We have trust between people, great welfare system and values that do not include acquiring crazy material wealth. I value my friends and loved ones, my day to day life and the fact that should things go bad, the society will catch me and help me get back on my feet. I feel rich already.

      As a finn, I could use a shorter summer here. I do live in Vantaa, very southern Finland, so summers here are longer than in Lapland, Rovaniemi, Ivalo etc. But we finns to have differences a lot, some of us don't wanna go to cold baths or winter lake baths (avanto, tai kylmäallas kylmä suihku) but I... like it. It's painful yeah, body just starts tingling like someone's gently stabbing you all over, even though there's no bleeding. But yeah, that's one of the things many finns seem to like to do, cold baths. Fits well with sauna if you ask me, just don't go to sauna too soon after you get out of the cold bath.

    I'm an American that moved to Finland in August 2019 and I noticed that even at work, Fins are layed back and casual about getting work done and I'm, still to this day "let's gooooooooo, lets get it done" kind of attitude. At first I thought it was because they were lazy.... but then I realized that's how they are. Here it's do what you're asked to do and nothing more, in the states it's do your work and more. Took me some time to get use to that. I still work as if I'm in the states, but I don't criticize them anymore. More understanding about how things are here. I like it... less stressful and alot happier. I love living in Finland.

    • @maplehill1416

      Obviously I don't know your work environment but personally I feel we actually get more impact done when we remove the hussle and stress and the need to prove oneself. When you stop to think, maybe you get less steps done, but you are able to pick most effective steps and skip the nonsense.
      My theory is that is why Finnish companies are generally very good at complex engineering and machinery - by reducing the complexity only to what is absolutely necessary.

    • @thrillyria
      @thrillyria 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      @@maplehill1416 I would agree with the efficiency angle.
      I myself think most Finns actually have very high morals and morale when it comes to working. We work smart. And we work to live, not live to work. And we do work hard too, but not when it's not at all necessary to kill ourselves under pressure. Why would someone do that to themselves?
      If you look at the Finnish nonprofit world for example, it is astonishing what has been done there with very limited resources and with the goal of cutting overall costs and increase the quality of life for all with the work and development we do. I would assume it's the same in the corporate world.
      On top of that because we have it good and safe here, we are able (and very keen) to implement values like sustainability into many aspects of our lives. Work, family and home life, economy and farming...

      The culture doesn't demand that everyone must do more than what they are paid to do, but every workplace and school will naturally have a couple of ambitious people who're always doing something extra anyway, at least that's my experience. Like my Finnish girlfriend is one of these people too, she graduated with a master's degree recently, decided she's going to continue her phD while working full-time at one job, and part-time at another, and she started doing a new bachelor's in a different field all at the same time. So yes, she's doing a phD, working two jobs (one full time) and doing a bachelor's in a new field, when she already has a master's degree in a different field. She keeps reassuring me that it's "not too much work" and that she has "plenty of free time".

    As a native finn, it's refreshing to hear a different perspective! Definitely inspires me to appreciate more and be thankful for the style of life that we have here.
    On a more personal note, sometimes it's easy to fall into "grass is greener on the other side"-type of thinking and crave the sort of hustle&bustle vibrancy that I have never experienced (a simple and easy life may condition a person to wallow in complacency). But it's nice to feel that in Finland it's possible to fulfill youself while not destroying yourself in a pursuit of an impossible status/lifestyle standard

    Simplicity is a matter of perspective. I think Finns appreciate clarity, is it "simple", not sure?
    To me, a hectic lifestyle represents uncertainty and/or a lack of planning and organizing. Of course, everyone has hectic periods sometimes, but if hecticness is a way of life, I have to ask, why is this person's life so busy, what basic needs is this person trying to fulfill?
    Because basic human needs are physiological needs, security, love and togetherness. They are not simple things at all, but maybe less materialistic. Nice car is just nice car, and you can be happy having nice car, but it should not be meaning of life.

    • @DaddiDiesel
      @DaddiDiesel  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Alot of valid points. To add I do think between all nations there is a sense of what you are raised to see as important. Even though you may be raised in a country that is fast pace for example your parents could have raised with different values.
      For many and I say this for having had an opportunity to move in live in different locations I have noticed it is more rare then we think for people to actually break away from their societal norm. Even if they feel something isn’t quite right.
      Kind of like the matrix not everyone will unplug and for most people it’s more fear surrounded around letting go of what you know and what your use to.
      The positives like I mentioned I see in Finland is that “life is simple here” for me. Not everyone especially for Finns, as m for many Finns this is their norm and what they know.
      But when you come from one extreme to something way more subtle it seems more simplistic “lifestyle wise” just as someone who moves from war to a country that has occasional crime. To them it’s most likely way safer to them.
      I hope this made some sense. But like you stated clearly above it’s all about perspective

    And what you say about our country, Finland, is pretty on-spot. The westernization too, I see it more in our youth than the older folks, but it's catching up. I just hope we retain some sense of where we came from and the good heritage we have in our genes and culture and all.. and not lose it to McDonalnds Microsoft Facebook Cocacola money etc. Those ain't really finnish things. Real Finland is wild nature, so much of it here, and lakes. And they make a lot of people here happy. It's a common finnish dream and goal to have a cabin in a lake shore near woods and maybe even live in that cabin, not just visit it in holidays.

    America is a very high stakes country in general (I don't know about individual states), which makes everything more hectic, and is the driver behind the stressfull work life. I personally think that it also is the ultimate driver behind the one upmanship and status seeking behaviour as well.
    In many European countries life is not in the fast lane, since people are quite well covered from the start, so the stakes are not so high and peoole don't feel the pressure to be constantly advancing something to get into a better position.
    But it's also true, that with high stakes may come high rewards and it's at least more likely than in low stakes countries.
    In the end of the day it's about personal preferences. I sometimes actually would like Finland to be more driven, but that's just sometimes, as most of the time I enjoy this laid back way of life, where I don't feel I have to constantly be in a race which has unclear and uncertain rules.

Get a car want better car, get better car want even better or another. Feels like currently cycling is trending in Finland so need to have a bike. A better bike. A second bike cause marketing is selling ideas and needs we didn't have.
    Don't know if we have less adds or milder advertisers that we have avoided some of the effect. But feel we arn't as driven by materials. And know to value life and free time.

It's exactly the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago etc. big bustling cities that are all about business and money, with lots of people. But USA is a huge country, which spans the whole North American continent; lots of things to see outside the "Corporate America". From Alaska to Hawaii. I will be making a future video about this question. However in short when moving here I made the quick choice to go the path of the entrepreneur. I was extremely difficult and beyond frustrating, but the benefits have been endless. And now today it has allowed me to be the sole provider for my family as well as a more present father and partner due to being able to control my schedule

    I like the style of work here, the little i have experienced it so far. But i think we're going to have to change that. We have 5.6M population in this country of which almost 3 million are children, unemployed and pensioners. So less of us are going to have to work harder and longer and taxes on the pay is going to increase. OR we will have to dismantle the entire bureacracy to bare bones and stop giving any money abroad for any reason so we don't have to screw the pensioners and unemployed people who actually want to work. The unemployed who don't want to work should be taken off social security.

    Punctuality is actually held in very high regard as a virtue in our society, that's probably why people like you. It's just, even if we have to start at 9 am, do we really have to start at 120% xD

      Nah man, us true ethnomasochists can still be miserable about things that suck in Finland. Doesn't help us in any way that some countries suck even more. 😎

    The ugly truth is we Finns can not actually afford the calm lifestyle we have where everyone is more or less equal. Our national debt is skyrocketing so we soon need to stress ALOT more and do ALOT more work if we will have a chance to fix the situation. As a Finn myself i think we sadly are too lazy and laid back and it will take along time and things will get a lot worse before our country is on the right course again.

      I can see your concerns for sure. Though my perspective was mainly just how it’s more laid back due to my country upbringing. I can definitely see gore it can draw concerns with the details you shared prior

      @@DaddiDiesel I did not mean to criticize your video and you are absolutely right in everything that was mentioned. All i am saying is there are storm clouds in the horizon and we (finns) should not get too relaxed and laid back when you see who is our neighbour (not sweden).

    • @Baalaaxa
      @Baalaaxa 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We should work smarter, instead of working harder. What comes to being lazy and laid back, when the system works against us; only fools will keep slaving away and still be losing the fruits of their labour, because our country is hindered by stupid politics and policies. Finland gained its wealth and wellbeing from the industriousness and hard work of our previous generations. But that was at the time when growth, expansion and business were promoted. Now we are a big socialist welfare bureau, with high taxes, huge debt, bureaucracy and regulations. First we need to fix the system, and only then get to work. I will not be working towards our own demise. And one of our neighbours has always been a threat, that has never changed. Only naïve pacifists think otherwise.
