For real. In particular, my mind was kinda melting during the race. I remember it taking half a minute just to drive past the first pair of giant pizzas.
And that makes it a bitch to play nowadays. The look sensitivity is tied to the fps, so unless you mod the game, it’s super hard to look around.

Apparently the lore for this game is exactly the same as The Neverhood. The Infomaniac is basically a god, and created Lego Island. The Brickster was the first being he created as a friend, but the Brickster became jealous when the Infomaniac started creating other people.

Reminds me of a book series I read called Nnewts (with two n's for some reason??)
So their god (Orion) created two Nnewts in one egg, the one who hatched first was named something that means "The First and Greatest" in God's language and a large crown, while the second one got a name that meant "The Second and Lesser" and a small crown. The second one got jealous and was consulted by an evil god. The evil god offers to be his father, only if he defaces Orion. The second one throws away his crown, turns into a snake and becomes the evil god's son. It's some weird shit.
@TCDoraemon: Because the game came with a hefty manual in the form of a comic book that was filled with supplementary lore, including the Lego Island origin story Serucipe is referring to. And more recently, we've discovered that some of this lore was teasing sequels Lego Island's real life creator had planned, before Mindscape backstabbed the entire development team and laid them all off a day before the game's release.
Everyone in Lego Island has extreme PTSD from witnessing countless beheadings and dismemberments on a daily basis.

Presumably if the game was a little less rushed, playing as Nick Brick would put everything in grayscale to reflect his colorblindness (hopefully with a noir-inspired variant of the ambient music for all the other areas as you went there).

I have one brother who can't tell bright yellows and bright greens apart, have met numerous people who can't tell deep blue and dark purple or hot pink and light purple apart, have another brother who had temporary colorblindness for a long time and says that while he was suffering everything was brown-scale instead of grayscale.
The point is, though, Nick is explicitly stated to have colorblindness, there's a noir theme to his intro cutscene, noir-appropriate background music playing at the police station, and the game accurately depicts Pepper's dyslexia on the few pieces of written text you can see while playing as him so it'd be fitting if while playing as Nick the entire game took on a noir detective vibe. Which, to all appearances, was probably intended at some point.

Man, considering how much I played this game as a kid I probably could've made that many streams.
And made for ages 8 to 13.
He also missed a lot of parts like the pirate voice in the cave and the apeshit Jetski lady in the Jetski racing minigame.
I mean it's possible he'll come back. Especially since he's gonna play the rest of the classic Lego games.

It's a very wholesome and good natured game that had a lot of effort put into it.
It's great as a relic of PC games from that era, as well as a cultural relic.
The gameplay is functional and that's good enough for an old game when it has this much character going for it.
Two things:
1: the The cave ending is a teaser for the cancelled sequel “Beneath The Phanta Sea”.
2: there is a new LEGO island game in the making under the name “Project Island” that will be in the wacky style of the first game. In fact some developers from the first game are working on the new one. The best part is that it will include songs from the first one, including:

I absolutely adore that we're all rightfully over-analyzing the possibly-intentional socioeconomic satire laden within a LEGO Island, creating all kinds of new headcanons. My ones as a kid mostly involved explaining in my mind how the size of rooms made sense with how small buildings are, where the locations in FMV's are that we don't get to play in, and how pre-rendered cutscenes change the look of the island between in-game events, not the adult/grown-up political and psychological structure of this *S O C I E T Y.*
Joel pretending(???) to be scared by weird things in family-friendly video games will never get old. "Aaahh! Mommy!"

That's debatable. Lego Island 2 was developed by a different team, because the first Lego Island's original dev team was laid off to save money when they shipped the game or something. Greedy business practices.
Yeah, usually, the company paid the workers a "bonus" when they do a good job, but mindvision fired THE ENTIRE TEAM one day before release, so that they wouldn't have to pay them the bonus.

When I got this game way back when, I was too young to understand that I was perceiving the game world through my character's eyes, so I got upset because I couldn't see my character, and didn't touch the game until years later. It wasn't until I played Metroid Prime several years later that I realized what first-person perspective was. All that said, this game reminds me of frustration. Great game, though.
Ironically, I hated Metroid Prime for the same reason. Platforming in that game is sketchy. I thought I had been tricked into playing Halo or something non-Nintendo.

That game is ridiculously unfinished. The disc has a shit ton of content that was unused. Same story with Lego Island 1: you were meant to be able to go into the pirate cave but they never finished it.
I had that one as well growing up. I also know it's the only decent game made by Data Design Interactive, who would later be the makers of the infamous "Ninjabread Man".
