I don't know where this lady lives as I found my way to this video after a very random discussion with my husband about how chickens lay eggs and how they have to be fertilized and such and this popped up after several web pages and TH-cam videos later lol but point being just saying 'she's in Alaska' is too broad. When I lived in Alaska I lived several hours by snow machine outside a tiny town, and then in a city..when I lived in the city and went to school when kids found out I was from Texas they would ask if I rode a horse to school. Then back in Texas they all asked if I lived in an igloo and were quite shocked to hear I lived in an apartment..with AC & heat! *gasp!* lol. I just watched your video and OMG! This morning I went out to let the chickens out and feed them and notice this blood sack hanging from one of my chicken's butt. I wasn't sure what it was but I knew I had to Google it. It's January here in Southern Louisiana and it's warm today approximately 65 or 70 f but I need to get on this. I was hoping she could pass it today so I sent my son out to check up on her to see if she got it out if not then we're about to start your process. She'll have to stay in for the night because I don't want the other hands to pick on her. She was walking and eating earlier today but probably couldn't poop unless she got the egg out. As soon as my son comes back in and lets me know will start soaking her in warm water and then proceeded and try and ease the egg out. Thanks for sharing the video.
Hello, you did a fantastic job and are very compassionate. This is a uterine prolapse due to a large egg but usually this happens to all animals including humans during the birthing process. The egg must be passed and using petroleum gelly was a great idea. Worst case scenario you would have to break the egg but this could cause infection that would lead to scepsis and then death(you would have to clean out the uterine cavity very well). You could also have done minor incisions to allow the egg to pass through but anaesthetic would be useful in this case. Prolapse would be likely again if sutering of the uterus is not done. Overall, great job handelling her and a very patient chicken!:)
@@tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579 yes you are indeed right that chickens have an oviduct. My apologies for not being more specific, I work with so many animals including cows, horses, sheep, etc. I was mainly referring to the reproductive tract/organ in general but thank you for pointing that out!:)

Thank you so much for your video. Earlier today I had a similar experience with one of my young hens that was egg bound and didn’t know what to do. After searching online I came across your video. It helped me so much, I did exactly what you did and after carefully soaking her in a warm bath and using Vaseline I was able to gently work her vent area and the egg finally came out. She was so relieved. I will be letting her rest for a few days away from the other hens. Again thank you so much. 🙏🏼
Thank you for trying to save the chicken, humanity triumphs over cost. It was important you tried. Well done I only have 7 girls, but all important as is life for the chicken.

+Saywardstudio SO happy this helped you and your poor hen! You might also want to feed her chicken "junk food" and keep her calcium down to prevent her body from trying to lay another egg right away. Also restrict her daylight, because their bodies naturally decrease egg production when their light is restricted. That will help give her body some time to heal up. Keep me updated! I'm on Facebook, too, if you're interested in my other Alaska adventures: facebook.com/alaskaurbanhippie/
Thank you! I just went and 'liked' it. You have some interesting things on there! She's doing fine this morning, I haven't taken her out of the cat carrier to inspect her yet, I figure that would be stressful, but I'm going to have to check her eventually today. I was wondering if some triple antibiotic cream would be ok to put back there to prevent anything developing? I'm keeping it dark and quiet, so hopefully she'll keep getting better! I will keep you updated!
+Saywardstudio I know that coconut oil and mineral oil are both ok for chicken internal/external use, but I'm not sure about antibiotic creams, sorry! Please do keep me updated. :)
+Alaska Urban Hippie Calcium also helps the chickens with muscle contractions apparently, so maybe the calcium would be a good thing to keep in the diet but idk just mentioning.
Thank you soooooo much! This video was a lifesaver and thanks to you, my hen is now recovering!! Without this, my girl would still be suffering. This was amazingly helpful and I was able to follow your steps to get the egg out. Have a great life!
everyone is talking about why didn't you take her to the vet but she clearly said I have a vet appointment in a few hours if I can't get it out and everyone says they're bad cuz they eat some of their animals but they live in Alaska where everything is super expensive and most people live off of the nature and by this video alone you can clearly tell they care about their animals
Oh you poor poor girl, what females go through. Thank goodness she has a loving sympathetic Mumma to help you through sweet lady!! I can feel your heart pouring out through your words and how difficult this was for YOU as well!! Wow. All us child birthers are feeling the pain I'm sure!! We've been there!!! This is just traumatising but from the messages I've read, you have helped a LOT of people tend to their furry friends because of your guidance. Thank you. Just, than you so much.
I think you did really well considering the circumstances. Your empathy and concern for her is apparent... Folks who live on farms laugh at some of us for our care and concern for animals I found after a favorite chicken was attacked by a hawk and lost his eye and I spend 6 weeks irrigating the empty eye socket will warm sterile saline mixed with antibiotics until it closed up and healed (I am a former nurse so I knew a bit about wound care) .... Who is going to fault someone for trying to help ANY injured animal.... Smh
Thank God, you’re a nurse. after keeping animals for all these years and realizing that vets often won’t help, I really wish I would’ve went to nursing school just to do better care for my animals. Lol.
For anyone watching this in 2023... I've read through some of the top comments and some the newest comments and haven't seen anyone suggest sugar. Research "hen vent prolapse sugar treatment". My hen had a prolapsed vent, but it wasn't this severe because she didn't also have an egg stuck. I don't know the mechanism behind why sugar works, but it did.... in my case. Great job trying to help your hen💜
Bless your heart. I've never seen anything like this,I've raised hens and Roosters for 3 years. I have had the eggs break inside them from our Rooster mounting them. Out of 5 cases of egg breaks I've only been able to nurse one back to health after cleaning their insides with a syringe and warm water over the course of 3 times a day for about 2 days and its never easy as you can see,but again, your case is pretty extreme and my hat is off to you. Good luck and I hope you were succesful.
I'm very impressed with your ability. As a retired RN, I have had to reduce many "people" prolapse problems and I acquired chickens about a year ago so I am learning much. Have given my hen, bound egg, several baths and brought her through the bound problem. My hens are pets first, egg producers second, and I am learning tons about chickens. You are amazing. (I did use some Prep H on my bound hen--don't know if that was a usual procedure but it did reduce the swelling with success) Thank you for your wonderful post. I wish I had lived in Ak part of my life. Perhaps KY jelly would have been better than Vaseline too on your egg problem?
+Dottie Ferrell That's a huge compliment coming from a retired RN - thank you! Luckily, I haven't had to go through this again since this hen, but KY Jelly is a very good idea. I also applied luke-warm coconut oil to help keep the area moist while it was healing and that seemed to work pretty well, plus it smelled nice. Many people in the Alaska chicken community swear by coconut oil for chicken health (putting it in feed, internal medical use, everything). Thank you for watching and commenting - it's very much appreciated. :)
Thank you for posting this! We just dealt with this situation today and your video gave us the confidence to keep trying to get the egg out. We did it. Hopefully she will heal now. Appreciate the update video too. We at least know we’ve done what we can.
Well done for even attempting this! You remained calm and gentle throughout. Such a wonderful owner Using icing sugar on the area is good for reducing swelling ( sounds odd but it draws fluid out of the tissues)
I had this happen to my sweet, baby hen, six months old, my runt Sunshine She passed away over the weekend after the eggs popped out. She just never recovered. I took her to the vet and they were no help unfortunately, I buried her yesterday. Being a chicken mom is not for the faint of heart. I’m telling you it is scary. It’s sad it’s awesome it’s amazing but then there’s days like these that just kick your right Where it hurts. Good luck to anyone owning a chicken family it’s very hard!
Bless her sweet little heart and bless you for caring for her. There's people that would have just threw her to the side and let her suffer or killed her. You did a great job. I was a trauma nurse for 15 years I've seen this in female patients. God bless people that take care of helpless animals. Thank you for sharing this video and I hope your baby's okay.
This happened to my budgie. We noticed her giving birth and the egg got stuck while on its way out. I wish we had time to rush her to the vet but she passed away so quickly.
Thanks!!! We ran into this issue yesterday and your video was the only helpful one we found. We were able to remove the egg and push the prolapse act in. Currently our hen is in our recovery coop by her self and seems to be doing well. Time will tell.
Nice work in a so difficult situation! I’m dealing with one now that had a huge egg and now has poop hanging up back there. She’s as active as the others and shows no issues, but I need to catch her for a little spa time, clean up on the vent area. I’m sort of thinking she may be having the same issue. She too was egg bound at about 8 months old, I was able to soak her and relax her enough the she eventually released the egg. Thank you for your video, you’re right there’s not much out there on the topic to be watched. It’s not that chickens are inexpensive, we are invested in them and their well being. So $65 is a drop in the bucket and worth the knowledge and maybe sorting the issue out. Just think, you and I are so much stronger for what you endured, thank you so much!! Joe in Seattle WA
Exactly :( I believe that was her first egg. Some chickens can get one stuck egg and totally recover, but other chickens it's an ongoing issue that will never correct itself.
I'd guess that it's because our egg laying breeds have been bred to produce big eggs and at high frequency, not necessarily inbreeding. But I suppose you never know.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh!!!!!!!!! I know this is a 5 year old video but you are AMAZING! I would feel and behave the same way and do my best also. I'm getting ready to watch the second video. So awesome to see how an egg bound prolapse chickie girl isn't doomed forever!
unfortunately once this happens its likely to happen again.. and worse. I have a poultry farm and we have tried to treat birds when this happens but long term... none of the birds did well. honesty the kindest thing to do is to put them down because it will only get worse.
That's great! It's amazing how videos on TH-cam can save an animals life bc you can look up what you may need to do to help..it's amazing your chicken is alive bc of this video!
You're freaking amazing. What a human being. Most people would be cowards and walk away. Hands down special woman you inspired me to keep farming and educate myself on the livestock I obtain. Gosh, I'm besides myself. Thanks ;) P.s nice observations throughout the entire procedure. Golf clap.
I am so sorry you and she went through this. As a human who had a severe prolapse (obviously without the egg) this is more common in humans than people realize. What she’s doing is reducing the prolapse. In humans it can happen with thrombosed hemorrhoids as well. Bless you for trying so hard with her!
You should've tried warm olive oil instead of petroleum. I am glad it worked. Please make sure to give your chicken enough selenium so this stuff won't happen again.
She was healing quite well, then tried to lay another egg a few days later and it got stuck the same way. Putting her down was the most humane thing to do. :(
+Alaska Urban Hippie oh no I'm so sorry. I think I'm going to stop eating eggs. I didn't know about the pain and the possible injuries. But you did such a great job with her. I'm sorry you lost her.
My chicken had a prolapse vent a couple days ago.She didn't have the egg stuck in her but everything else was out. My son who works in a veterinary bird and pet hospital told me to clean it by soaking her in light soapy water to clean the area so I did that and then he told me to use very large Qtips and dip it in sugar water. Then wipe everything hanging out with the sugar water, then again use a clean large fat tip Qtip and dip it again in the sugar water and push it all back in the vent. It all went back in no problem. He said its a 50/50 chance. If she don't lay eggs it won't come back out and she will be ok but if she does the egg may push it back out. He said that's the procedure they use at his hospital. I did everything he said and she didn't lay for 48 hrs and she laid this morning and I was amazed the sugar water worked and she seems to be ok now. He told me if it kept coming back out her vent then she would either die or I would need to put her down. My 4 chickens are like my pets so I was very happy she is ok. Hope this helps someone. Oh and he said if there is an egg stuck don't break it cause it could cause infection and kill her. God Bless
Just went through this the other night. Soaked her in Epsom salt bath and massaged the egg while she was in the water. It came out fairly easy after a little massaging.
She was healing quite well, then tried to lay another egg a few days later and it got stuck the same way. Putting her down was the most humane thing to do. :(
Thank u so much dear u done a great job she is out of danger. my tears we're dropping when u trying to push out that egg from her body.now I got relief and happy😊 .I have 7 yrs old pet hen chicken.i do take lot of care and attention to her and I know the pain.thank u so much lots of love😘😘😘. please save animals they are angels on this planet.🐣🐥🐔
You should've like put a rubber band before the egg, as tight as possible, then just push gently the egg out, cut what's remaining of the prolapse and leave the rubber band on, apply some disinfectant and some cream to help her heal up faster, leave it over the night and the next day take the rubber band off, assuming that she needed to lay another egg. That would've saved her, just an advice if this is going to ever happen again to one of your chickens.
My hen Sid just recovered from prolapse with comorbid flystrike. We kept her away from her friends and used vetericyn and gentian violet for infection. Let the maggots eat the dead tissue but kept removing most to keep numbers down. She healed and went back with flock. Yesterday, she laid 1st egg since prolapse.
I had an eggbound quail, first time. I soaked her in 1 part epsom salt to 5 parts warm water for 20 minutes. I divided it into two 10 minute sitz baths so the water was warm. After 20 minutes, it's not warm which defeats the idea. Rather than putting warm water into the vent, which could cause infection, I put in warm coconut oil inside the vent and well massaged the outside of the vent with coconut oil, much as a midwife would do during a birth to prevent tearing. I did this twice, dried her off with a towel then sat with her, wrapped in a thin, dry towel and a heating pad. After she was dry, I put her in a cage by herself with fresh wood shavings, and a heat source on one end, as well as food set down low, as it seemed she had a difficult time reaching up. She would back up if she had to lift her head high. After a couple hours, I checked and she had passed the egg herself. It was very round, with lots of bloom. She had this egg in her for several days. I think the reason she lived, even though a quail shouldn't live past a day or two eggbound, was I had done this routine a couple times prior, and each time including this last time today, each time I stretched the vent to try and help the egg pass, she would poo. (paper towel warning.) That's the reason hens die when eggbound...is they can't poo and go toxic. Bottom line, try massaging the vent with warmed olive oil or coconut oil, in addition to an epsom salt sitz bath. The magnesium in the epsom salt will nourish the muscles and help them contract.
The exact same thing happened to my chicken and this video was very helpful. I got the egg out of my hen, but it took a few days for everything to go back inside. I put her in the bathroom in a clean dog crate and left the room quite dark to keep her from trying to lay again. I gave her three baths a day and took her to the vet to get checked out. The vet prescribed antibiotics and pain meds. My girl lived on for two months then became bound again and passed very quickly. The vet we saw mentioned to use KY jelly but not Vaseline or olive oil.

I watched this and helped a friend save her chicken!! I got the egg out! Thank you!
Sue, that's incredible!! Well done. Thank you for telling me.

Sue Leighton That’s awesome!
Great job! It's amazing how relaxed she is with you. It's like she just put it all in your hands and have her your complete trust. Good job!
I don’t even have chickens so I haven’t a clue how I got here😂 I couldn’t stop watching without knowing the outcome! *”WAY TO GO, GIRL!!!”*
You clicked on the video thats how you got here.

Yes me too haha
Oh my- I was holding my breath the entire time I watched this, and finally took a breath when the egg came out! Great Job!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting this. We just lost one of our feathery girls and we are heartbroken. The vet gave her 5% survival chance.
You are very patient.

Also, I your update video came up in my feed and I watched it before this video. Thank you for being a resource for chicken keepers!

I hope your chicky was okay!
Well done for even attempting this! You remained calm and gentle throughout. Such a wonderful owner
Using icing sugar on the area is good for reducing swelling ( sounds odd but it draws fluid out of the tissues)
You are so brave. I would have been sobbing and apologising to the chook the whole time. That stoic hen seems to know that you are helping.
You handled that so well given never experienced it before first hand.
Thank you. I look back at it now as a huge learning experience, but it was beyond stressful for both of us.
+Alaska Urban Hippie Sorry for your loss. I am curious as to how you, "put down a chicken? "

did you ever do an update? would love to know how she made out. thanks for sharing that nerve racking video trying to help her out.
She died.
She's dead.
she was put down as this happen again with her second egg :(
thanx for letting me know, poor thing
dhdhdh
Bless her sweet little heart and bless you for caring for her. There's people that would have just threw her to the side and let her suffer or killed her. You did a great job. I was a trauma nurse for 15 years I've seen this in female patients. God bless people that take care of helpless animals. Thank you for sharing this video and I hope your baby's okay.
Poor chicken, I hope she is ok !!!

shes a hen👍

Latrice Johnson whats the difference between a chicken and a hen?
its fine
This happened to my budgie. We noticed her giving birth and the egg got stuck while on its way out. I wish we had time to rush her to the vet but she passed away so quickly.
tigereye8593 my condolences.
WOW you are good person! Thanks for caring about an animal that most people consider only as food 😊
Your such and awesome human ur so caring there aren’t many people like u
Thank you.

Thanks!!! We ran into this issue yesterday and your video was the only helpful one we found. We were able to remove the egg and push the prolapse act in. Currently our hen is in our recovery coop by her self and seems to be doing well.
Time will tell.
You’re such a sweet chicken mom, I can tell you care about her 😭💕
Illy
She tortured it. Just pop the egg. At that point. She’s not gonna die From an egg break that low. If you can’t care for it don’t have it.
@@jayrezz988that is exactly what I told your mom, yet here you are.
Awww hun your so caring, passionate & gentle. ❤❤❤
What causes them to become egg-bound?
The vent didn't open wide enough for the egg to come out, so the hen kept pushing until the egg left her body... Taking the vent with it
Baron1170 4
Oh, poor hen :S
Exactly :( I believe that was her first egg. Some chickens can get one stuck egg and totally recover, but other chickens it's an ongoing issue that will never correct itself.
Alaska Urban Hippie
sounds like it's probably bad genetics from inbreeding if it happens a lot more in chickens than other birds.
I'd guess that it's because our egg laying breeds have been bred to produce big eggs and at high frequency, not necessarily inbreeding. But I suppose you never know.
Hopefully the chicken is okay

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh!!!!!!!!! I know this is a 5 year old video but you are AMAZING! I would feel and behave the same way and do my best also. I'm getting ready to watch the second video. So awesome to see how an egg bound prolapse chickie girl isn't doomed forever!
unfortunately once this happens its likely to happen again.. and worse. I have a poultry farm and we have tried to treat birds when this happens but long term... none of the birds did well. honesty the kindest thing to do is to put them down because it will only get worse.
Awe :(
Shokara2 Darn. Now I know I have this coming to deal with my lovely hens. Ughhhhhh. I shall. But still ughhh
Yeah, in one of her other comments she mentioned that it happened again and they had to put her down

I am so sorry you and she went through this. As a human who had a severe prolapse (obviously without the egg) this is more common in humans than people realize. What she’s doing is reducing the prolapse. In humans it can happen with thrombosed hemorrhoids as well. Bless you for trying so hard with her!
so did the chicken die cuz I'm looking through the comments and people are saying she did??
boba _squishy yea she did

Alaska Urban Hippie aw ok
You should've tried warm olive oil instead of petroleum. I am glad it worked. Please make sure to give your chicken enough selenium so this stuff won't happen again.
Thank you for video taping this. I have a girl right now who has eggs side by side
You are a very kind, caring person. This chicken is lucky to have you to help her. Good job.
Did she survive and does she still lay eggs?
She was healing quite well, then tried to lay another egg a few days later and it got stuck the same way. Putting her down was the most humane thing to do. :(
she looked sweet i know im just a child but i know that was the best choice.
at least you tried
It came out fairly easy after a little massaging.
oh i would have really struggled with this!! Amazing job!
Thank you :)
How did she fare afterwards? It looks awful for her!!
She was healing quite well, then tried to lay another egg a few days later and it got stuck the same way. Putting her down was the most humane thing to do. :(
Awww, I understand!! You did the right thing. Your compassion is admirable.
+Off-beat Homesteader thank you.
You made me jump when you got the egg to come out. Hope she's alright.
You should make a video of the procedure if it will help others.
Sarcastically Deranged
This never actually happened to any of my chickens, but i know that this procedure will work as intented
+DreamRO ROTMG Well, good luck with the chickens. I hope they stay healthy.

My hen Sid just recovered from prolapse with comorbid flystrike. We kept her away from her friends and used vetericyn and gentian violet for infection. Let the maggots eat the dead tissue but kept removing most to keep numbers down. She healed and went back with flock. Yesterday, she laid 1st egg since prolapse.
ur a merciful woman.....may god bless uu

How do I get on this side of TH-cam
You just look up the word chicken birth
Hi😍
Just a minute ago I was listening to AC/DC (if u don’t know who they are, search em’ up they’re really cool)!
Oh the poor hen, so young and already troubles, I hope she recovered.
You did a great job with her
I had an eggbound quail, first time.
I hope she's ok after all this and I'm glad it worked out
peachy druggie the same thing happened a few days later, so she had to put her down :( She said it was the most humane thing to do
Is this a common thing with chickens

It's a mineral deficiency. Not super common.

then stop eating eggs , cuz eggs what u r eating are from there xDD
This looks painful. Poor thing, I hope she's okay.
11:44 for a second I thought you cracked the egg my heart just skipped a beat omg..
