Thanks for being succinct and not monologuing. Didn’t know ratio of epsom to warm water so was generous in quantity and time of soak. Hen stopped panting and opened her eyes going on 40 min with refill of warm water. She’s in a confined area, alert, eating and drinking. Just waiting for that egg to pass...
Give her a calcium suppliment (crushed tums if that's all you have but any form will work; if its too big, break it into small corn kernel sized bits ) , then if she has not laid an egg within 4 - 6 hours give her more calcium and another epsom soak ( about 1/2 cup of epsom salt to a sink of warm water.) Here I am giving a pill to a chicken.. but sometimes crush it and sprinkle it on a crumbled boiled egg yolk. facebook.com/teresa.johnson.10/videos/923136891043337/
Antievivi.. I am glad to have you here .. stop inn for coffee and a video anytime.. if there is ever anything you would like for me to post about .. just let me know ( I am old .. and know a little bit about a lotta stuff! ) :-)
Mine is walking funny like a penguin...I've been giving her Epsom salt baths and crushed calcium pills in her food, this is the 5th day so far and she's still the same...every vet I've called said they don't deal with chickens or other birds so all I can do is hope and pray everything turns out alright...I know that to some people they are JUST CHICKENS but to me they are MY BABIES...she is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte named Sparkle
Put your hand under her abdomen.. if it feels like a water balloon ... look up my video on draining waterbelly . it won't cure the cause.. liver failure or heart damage .. but will make her more comfortable for the time she has left .. and could give her a little more time Best wishes .. let me know how it goes
Omg! I love you! Your channel has been a huge blessing! Thank you for all your help and sharing your amazing wisdom and knowledge, you don't know how much you have been a blessing to sooooo many people including myself! A huge thank you and God bless you greatly for having a caring heart!
Thanks for sharing. Your video helped save our isa brown that had the same issue. We did not have the salt so used warm water only. While we had her in the water she dropped an egg. Soon after she began feeling better and is OK.
Thank you so much for this video, I lost one of my hens to a bound egg a couple years ago, and just this (morning? yesterday morning? I've been awake half the night researching), one of my almost 8 year old hens was exhibiting egg bound symptoms. I sat with her while she soaked in the warm epsom salt water, and she eventually passed one of those 'leather eggs', which was hopefully the only blockage. I wasn't sure what it was, and if it was actually the blockage, but this video confirmed that it most likely was! I'm keeping her separate from the other chickens for probably the next couple days to keep an eye on her, but hopefully she'll be getting better :)
Give her some calcium . easily done when you crush a human suppliment and add it to a crumbled boiled egg yolk Keep her quiet and she should lay another egg in 48 hours. Let us know how she does.. Prayers
AMEN?! SPOT ON! Now this is thee best right to solving the problem... what a precious lil' Trooper lol so glad she pulled through... didn't know about the 30 mins soaki just do 15 mins and i use the "food grade mineral oil" as well... my Cornish laid a soft shelled egg and an egg yolk.. within minutes of each other... she's fine... the next day she laid a regular egg... i think she just has an off cycle before she starts up... my Wyandotte does the same thing...then she shuts down for a bit and starts laying again... they need down time too...poor things they're not machines... this was a great video...NEW SUBSCRIBER!
I live in NYC. Urban raised. I was raised as a meat eater. I've struggling with a vegan diet since Dec. Watching your videos opened my eyes to the lack of compassion I had towards chickens and turkeys. And it also made me think, of the health risk because these little babies really do need a lot of TLC. I never knew.
MsKariLola, I am a meat eater, not much.. maybe 12 oz per week , I was influenced by Native American values... we respect life.. all life, plants, animals, humans etc. Every animal I have on the ranch is a food source ( IF I ever needed it) I am fortunate to have chickens that lay eggs and goats that give milk for cheese, yogurt, butter, probiotics... At this point I have no need of taking the lives of one of my animals to sustain my own. But I have.. and I know how, both for food and to put a suffering animal down, My methods are calm and quick, with as little stress as possible for the last seconds of the animals life. I don't take it lightly, and it is hard for me to do .. I would much rather sit on the porch holding one of my birds in my lap... ( The turkeys are a blast) or scratching the chin of a cow or bull. Or watching a silly pig follow me around the ranch after she has escaped her pen. That is true, Even though I still buy meats.. I try to buy local ... it really bugs me to buy a chicken breast at the store and see that is has 40% (liquid for juiciness added to it) And then thinking about the horrible living conditions most commercially raised animals had to live in!

Thank you for the suggestion about B complex and vitamin C. I think my hen has a leather egg so I will give her a good soak and also feed her some vitamins.
Yes another sweet hen laid a leather egg last night shes doing wonderful this morning ! She dident show the normal signs of egg bound so i thought she was plugged up with something besides an egg . I saw her in the coop pushing hard but no waddle or laying down just standing tail up . Is there a diy so she doesn't get an internal infection or do i need to give her anything ?
Very warm water a full 20 minute soak so she can absorb the magnesium, get some calcium down her ASAP make certain to get her dry and comfortable after her bath .. a box in a closet or tub with a towel over it usually works Repeat after 3 hours if she hasn't laid an egg yet Prayers ..
Please help, I have a 5 month old pullet that I believe may be egg bound, she's been tail down for almost 2 weeks. She's eating, she's drinking. She doesn't wattle and she doesn't pant. I started Epsom salt baths 2 days ago...her tail, under the feathers seems to be quite infected and the egg seems to be sitting where the ischium meets the caudal vertebrate. I'm also giving her pureed eggshells, yogurt and anything else she'll eat. You referred to the next step, wht would that be?
can you please tell us the exact amount and kind of vitamins and other treatments you gave her and how often for each? Thank you, nice job with the hen
1 sink of very warm water, 1 cup Epsom salt Soak for 20 minutes minimum to absorb magnesium from epsom salt. 2 tums cut in half feed 1/2 before bath, 1/2 after, ( break it into pea sized pieces. I feed a boiled egg with a crushed tums about 1/2 hour after I have blow dried the hen put her in a warm quiet dark place ( I use a tote inn a closet) if no egg within 2 hours repeat the process then leave over night . if no egg by the am repeat all again
Thanks for posting this video. My rescue chicken Beauty has been passing the leathery eggs for the last week, and yesterday she layer a huge 4 ounce egg, how she did it without injury I don't know. Throughout the problem gave her warm baths which she loves, and also examined her, and on two occasions pulled out the leathery eggs. Why does this happen? Is she ending her laying. Hubby says she going through the menapause 😀. Any advice would be welcome please! I give her calcium and vitamins everyday, and ionic silver so she doesn't get an infection, and of course tender loving care.
Sorry I am late in replying you tube just got my notifications box repaired .. I hope your hen is doing well.. Leathery eggs can happen at any time .. sometimes caused by stress .. once she passed that large egg she should be fine
Teresa Johnson sorry to say she went down hill fast and had to be put to sleep. Such a treasure, I miss her terribly. Only one battery hen has survive, and we have had twelve.i would stop having them but they are such lovely pets. Thanks for getting back to me. Jane
Aww sorry ... Battery hens have such a rough life.. I am happy you take them in and give them s short reprieve before their end.. all animals should know love in their lives.
My experience has taught me it's a lack of calcium that causes shell less eggs. It can be remedied by having crushed oyster shells readily available or crush up their egg shells and give them.
I had what I believe was an eggbound hen die while i was trying to treat her. She was extremely swollen. I did a necopsy and found her oviduct/uterus was full of tons of yellowish brown foul smelling fluid and clumps of firm off-white material, almost like the color and consistency of extra firm tofu. The largest clump was very firm in the middle. I would say the swollen section was the size of a large grapefruit. I am wondering if you know what caused this and how long it took for it to get that bad. She showed no signs of illness until the evening before she passed.
You found a lash egg.. not a true egg at all ... but the result of an oviduct infection .. most will say it is a death sentence but that is not always so sometimes that can recover if they are able to pass it .
You're a good mama. My chicks are Rhode Island Reds, they don't care much for being handled even though I've held them every day, they used to love it and sleep, now they're bouncy teenagers. I hope none of have this or other serious problems, I can't see them sitting in water, even if I tried to hold them in there. I'm really scared of something happening to them and not able to fix it or make it worse. Someone suggested lying them on their back, put them in a trance and they'll be submissive. They don't go in a trance, they talk the entire time, blink at me, tap beak on me, but I have been able to pick them up more so I'm hoping this idea works so they'll let me help if something happens.
I’ve given so many baths and can feel the egg itself with an inserted mineral oil lubricated gloves finger. It just won’t come out. I have to help her pass waste by moving the egg out of the way to remove pressure on the colon. Her crop barely empties. I’m trying to avoid breaking it and clearing it manually. She tries to lay it but it won’t come out. She lays 3.4 oz eggs so they’re not small. This is the second one this week but this is not clearing. I do not have calcium pills but have been powdering egg shell until I get it tonight.
Teresa Johnson I appreciate that! She released the egg yesterday after an epsom salt bath, and now she is no longer panting, but is still tired and worn out. We are giving her lots of love and some calcium/magnesium in hopes she can feel better.
My one hen layed a soft shell egg like this hen did two times already. She never looks truly eggbound when it happens, she just loses her appetite and doesn't move as much. She also has runny poo when that happens. She hasn't layed eggs in months and now she feels like this once a week. After that one day of feeling bad she goes back to being completely normal. I've been giving her extra laying pellets and checking up on her every day. I'm so afraid that one day she won't be able to lay the egg and I won't be able to help. Since it's lockdown here where I live I can't exactly get the salt that you used in the bath, but if I am able to, how much should I use? And do you think there is another way to help this problem of hers permanently?
Epsom Salt is not truly a "salt" it is magnesium sulfate, and can be purchased online, in most dollar stores, grocery stores and animal feed stores. How old is your hen? she could be reaching the end of her laying cycle in life. If she has laid a couple . or a few of these soft leathery eggs, she may be calcium defecient. you can give her human calcium vitamins crushed, tums, crushed, and if you don't have these . you can bake eggshells at about 200 dregrees for about 15 minutes then crush to a fine powder. I would try these things and see if it helps. If you think she is eggbound it is imperative to get her to lay an egg within 48 hours ( I don't think she is if she goes inand out of the symptoms frequently) A warm Epsom salt bath of 1/2 cup of epsom salt to a gallon of very warm water and a soaking time of a minimum of 20 minutes would help . but then you must dry her well and put her in a quiet darkened area to see if she will lay. I dry my hens after a bath by wrapping them in a towel and blowing warm dryer air into the loosly wrapped towel . be careful as it can get too hot inside the towel . Prayers for your little one ... let me know if I can be of further assistance
@@teresajohnson9784 Thank you! She is about a year and 7 months old now. At this moment I actually wish she is coming to the end of her laying cycle, because I don't think I'll be able to handle the death of any of my chickens. We only have three and I love them so much. I'll see if I can find the epsom salt and I'll give them some egg shell. Luckily, they don't mind eating eggshells and even ate my hens one soft shell egg that didn't break. Although that didn't exactly have a shell.
@@shanivanheerden9893 I would lean more to the calcium deficiency, Feed the toasted eggshell powder if that is what you have, I would also feed her a crumbled boiled egg yolk every few days, in addition to her regular food and I would also give her some vitamin B complex 4 days on and 2 weeks off as a general health booster. I have hens that are six years old that still lay regularly.
I believe i have an egg bound hen she is coming up to her 48 hour mark.. So my question is if she is indeed egg bound will their crop be full as well at this point? These are the symptoms... She had which i believe was an empacted crop which i couldnt treat with mineral oil/ massaging.. Also she was only passing clear fliud no feces, She started to waddle like a duck so i believe she has been egg bound ever since.. I couldn't tell because she lays every once in a while.. I tried your method for egg bound keeping my fingers crossed... Hopefully you can help me...
Thanks Teresa Johnson for your videos. They were educational and interesting to watch. I have a mixed flock of 11 birds and would be interested in learning more about them.
Thanks for joining us djm, I will be happy to answer any questions and I may even have reference videos that I haven't posted yet. Just let me know how I can help. My laptop is only off a few hours each day .. I check in often as I use it to keep in touch with family, friends, and visitors.
Teresa Johnson, I am in need of help. I have a Buff Orpington who has fallen ill. I found her a part of the coop, away from the other birds just standing there, kinda lethargic. I got a hold of her and she started throwing up. Her vomit looked like yellow Gatorade. Can you please help me? I have already quarantined her and placed some water in with her.
First thing is a "physical exam" Is her comb bright and red .. or pale ..Smell her breath .. is it sour or no smell, If you can look into her mouth with a flashlight, does she have gape-worms in the back of her throat? Feel her crop, is it empty, large, firm, soft? Listen to her breathing .. is it raspy? Check her breast meat.. is she thick?? If bony she has been suffering from worms. Look at her vent.. is it clean or sticky mucky ?? Is it pulsing? feel her abdomen, is it soft, hard, full ?? is there a solid lump on the abdomen midway .. If I the answer to a few of these questions .. maybe I can help
What color is her comb? How does her breath smell? Is her crop full? I will ask lots more questions.. just want to get this out to you so you know I am here
What is her breathing like? raspy? normal? Can you look down her throat and see worms? Is her breast bone meaty or bony? Is her abdomen soft .. medium.. or hard? Is her bum clean? sticky, messy?
Not sure where you live .. but Magnesium salt is Epsom Salt easy to find here in the States in every Pharmacy .. I also buy Human vitamins at the same stores and use them on my animals
My barred rock pepper is having the same issue. She hasn’t laid and egg in 48 hours and is lethargic and waddling with her tail down. I gave her a warm epsom salt bath and some berries covered with 2 calcium tablets. Is there anything else I can do to help her?
My hen is egg bound- tried everything and still stuck. I can feel the egg inside it is hard shelled, maybe a bit large. Been doing Epsom baths and calcium and tube feeding electrolyte water. Have had her in the bathroom with the shower on for a few hours now- it's nice and dark, and a heat pad under a towel beneath her. No progress just still straining. Any advice?
When did she lay her last egg, when did you notice different behavior? How much epsom, how long the bath, did you blow dry her, can she drink on her own, did you glove up and go in and feel the egg, what kind of calcium and how are you getting it down her How long since her bath.. sorry for the questions . just need to know what we are dealing with.
Egg binding can be caused by several things Molting, stress, illness, etc.. the calcium simply aids contractions of the oviduct in passing the blocked egg.
Hey thank you so much for this video, if the calcium chewables are a lemon flavor is it still ok to crushup and give to my eggbound chick ? (I bought lemon flavor accidently for her)
Hi hello, my hen started laying unfertilized eggs feb 13th and then her second egg was feb 15th, then her 3rd was feb 16th and today is feb 17th, and she was giving us signs that she wanted to lay an egg in the morning, we tried putting her in a nest but she would just go away and start looking at other places to lay the egg, so we tried putting her in a dark place like the closet or somewhere else, she laid then for a bit but nothing happened. She then suddenly stopped making that 'laying an egg sound' and she went outside started eating little stuff like dirt, pebbles, acting normal, so I thought maybe its not her time then like in the afternoon thats when I noticed she was being quiet, and acting different. Her tail is kinda down and she just stands still, she kinda closes her eyes, but she does eat or poop. Her poop is normal, it's not stuck in her feathers. I dont know but I think maybe this is the start of an eggbound hen? I put her in epsom salt warm water and she first had two contractions (she kinda pushed) but then stopped. And nothing happened after.
The epsom salt is a magnesiun suppliment absorbed through the skin.. it doesn't do anything for ascetis, but an epsom salt bath is my go to first step to make certain they are not egg bound .. since egg binding is usually fatal within 48 hours
Where do you get your vitamins vitamins you get humans also I have the same problem with a hand this is the third day I heard her in the absent this morning but only for a couple minutes but I will make a long bath for her tonight
Same thing just happen with my pet Pekin duck. She was moving her wings around all crazy this morning along with moving chest and head in different directions (scared me half to death) but she was straining so much I had to hold her still and she finally laid two eggs. First one was huge and soft it was also broken which idk if it happened inside her or when it came out. Then the second egg was normal. I have her in a dark room so she can relax with food and water. I added oyster shells to her layer food. Should I be worried of anything happening to her? Such as infections or anything??? Should I give her anything else??
Good deal on the watching of her until she passed that problem "leather egg" followed by the good one It will be rare for this to happen again in the very near future Oyster shells should be free choice. not mixed with food .. but you could crush a tums (antacid) .. or a calcium supplement and feed it in a boiled egg yolk for a few days .. Vitamin B super complex would be good too for a few days .. Good luck .. keep us informed !
This old girl got about an extra year of a great life before she crossed over in her sleep comfortably.. we miss her but are thankful she had some extra time.
What we do in our country we hold the hen by her feet and wings and shake it all the direction s for few seconds like 20 seconds and we leave the hen then we repeat if she couldn't, it works like a magic
thats wonderful.it works for you now I'm going to try the same and hope it works for my hen..her abdomen is also farm to touch and she looks tired all the time..for about two to three weeks now.so tomorrow I will give her apson salt bath and some extra calcium.let see any help.do you have any advice for me.by the way I subscribe your channel..
Orchid, Egg binding will usually take the life of a bird within 48 hours .. it wouldn't go on for weeks... You should probably refer to my other videos relating to Draining water belly ( Acetis ) but remember it is not a cure for the underlying Heart or liver issues.. it only helps keep them comfortable th-cam.com/video/1G7GWlkq_6M/w-d-xo.html
I am grieving the loss of my beautiful "Golden." (Rhode Island Red) She had just got all her new feathers, and was so full of herself, but before moulting, she kept having those leathery eggs. Then she was acting like she was trying to lay, but I could see the rubbery looking piece. I tried the soaks, extra calcium. It's just so sad. I was pretty wore out from treating Pepper - my Plymouth Rock, who had either a door strike her (high wind blew the rock away) or possibly hawk strike. Had to force feed liquids, her medicine, food for over a week, and put them both back in the house every night, since they were such good friends and it was bitterly cold. So finally Pepper could hold her head up again, walk normally and was eating and drinking, and Golden Girl was so beautiful- actually flying and showing off. Then, I noticed she was fussy, but couldn't get to her right away. A few hours later, I found her dead. Still in shock as it was Pepper so frail still (when normally she's the big girl.) I am not sure this time I could've pulled Golden through, as she has had repeated problems like this, and the vet didn't know why - no worms or anything. So, I am 'being a hen' with Pepper, digging worms for her and giving extra attention. Not sure about whether I should get her a new friend, or not. I mean, it will never be Golden, who she grew up with. Should I get her a little chick? Or two? (after she gets stronger)...Are Rhode Islands just more high-strung? More easily disturbed? Pepper is always so calm, takes everything in stride.
My one year old Easter Egger isn’t acting right. Her tail feathers are pointed down, she’s barely eating and drinking. I gave her a warm epsom bath soak and have her in our office with probiotic/electrolyte water, yogurt with a crushed tums and some food. She’s acting super sad and has been laying in the coop all day which isn’t like her at all. I’m not sure when she last laid, we have 2 hens that lay green eggs and yesterday was the first time I’d gotten the eggs for about 30 hrs and the 2 green eggs could have been from her sister. She hasn’t laid at all today. Should I just keep repeating the epsom soak until she lays? I tried to gently put a lubricated finger in her vent to feel for an egg but she wasn’t having it, when my husband gets home I’m going to try and lubricate her vent with some KY or mineral oil.
I really wish you didn't cut out the part where you explaining about the hens abdomen. I have a hen I am uncertain if she's egg bound, broody, or laying.
John, is she sitting on a nest with eggs under her simply looking contented and quiet? Broody ... Going to the nest once or twice a day .. then getting off .. eating and moving around well ... Laying .. Hunched sometimes in a corner .. sometimes out in the open .. rear end fluctuating .. acting constipated, head droopy, eyes somewhat unresponsive.. chances are she's egg bound .. you can usually feel it if you rest her abdomen in the palm of your hand ...
Thank you for replying Mrs. Johnson, I no longer think she's egg bound. I tried putting her in an epsom salt bath and she stood up just looking at me for about 20 minutes. She readily ate some dried grubworms and drank a little water with calcium vitamin added then even proceeded to drink a little epsom salt bath water. In the bath she pooped. I've since seen her poop today as well. I'm hoping she's broody. She doesn't seem to be in pain. She'll puff up when I open the nest box door from behind, but she doesn't seem to be territorial. If I pick her up and put her on the ground she'll sit on the ground puffed up, get up and eat from the food pan. I saw a small amount of fluid present on her vent this morning. I'm not sure if that's normal. Is it peritonitis or something else?
Ok John .. lets treat her like we expect she will be ok.. and we just want to do whats best for her .. 1/2 cup of layer pellets near her and see how long it takes her to eat that ... also add a boiled egg, (SHELL AND ALL) crumbled and fed to her sprinkle some tumeric or cinnamon on it .. feed once a day or every other day. Some vitamin B super complex would also do her good .. and I see you are giving some calcium .. Not all broody hens are territorial do you have access to some fertile eggs for her?
The other hens, accept for another I am looking into, usually lay every day. I've noticed it seems she'll get out of the nesting boxes (there are 2 boxes for 8 hens and a rooster) and wait for them to lay then go back in. Last night she shared one nesting box with a leghorn. She does seem to sort grab at her chest but not pulling feathers out. her wings have been drooped down a bit and she is completely puffed up hiding her neck. Should i isolate her as well?
I have a one year old hen who 3 days ago was acting normal, eating well and walking without any problems. So next day she was less active and just appeared to not feel well when I look in her eyes. That afternoon I didn't see what came out from her vent area but it was a jelly like discharge that appeared to be darker in color and I couldn't get her or the other hen to stop eating it. I had to literally remove them from pen. She doesnt lay eggs daily but atleast a few times a week and i havent notices any eggs and today she only wants to lay on the ground. Also her feathers on one side seen to wanna flare out when she gets up to walk. They ya usually return to normal but she most definitely has something going on. Shes still eating a little and can stand although she looks like she doesnt want to. Yesterday I soaked her in warm water and afterwards she pooped a clear/yellowish discharge substance. I thought vent fleet but I dont smell a strong odor. I have noticed her returning to hwe box where she lays. She is my baby that was abandoned by her mom so I took care of her and my son would be devastated if she passed. She always responds to her name in a happy manner when I call her but now she only wants to lay there and look pitiful. Also she does have some poop on her feathers but vent doesnt look blocked. Pls help if possible ... thanks
Get her in for another soak, very warm water deep as half her height while sitting in it . with 1/3 cup of EPSOM SALT dissolved in it ... at LEAST 20 minute soak .. then blow dry .feed her a boiled egg yolk with a crushed calcium tablet ( tums or vitamin) as well as a good sprinkle of fresh minced or powdered garlic ( NOT GARLIC SALT) put her in a dark place in a nest of sorts for a few hours and see if she passes an egg.. if not repeat within 6 hours .. keep fresh water available . if this doesn't worksdhe may have a liver disorder '
@@teresajohnson9784 thank you so much for taking the time to respond. So I put her in a salt bath as you said and she really doesn't feel distended on her abdomen nor does her vent protrude. She does have some yellowish stool on her feathers . Anyways so as soon as I took her out, she pooped fir the first time that I've seen in almost 2 days. And it had a long worm(pretty sure it was a roundworm) in her stool. Arghhhhhh!!!!so could I be misdiagnosising the problem. ARe these common symptoms for worms? I am trained in nursing humans but these chickens are going to make me scream. I hope we can treat the worms and that be the problem bc its going on 48 hrs if shes eggbound then we are pushing our time. Thank you again
@@kimberlyfountain8781 I am sorry, just got this message .. is she still with us? yes I would treat for worms there are worm meds out there but I don't know what to reccommend I use diatomaceous Earth .. but it is best used before the worms get established .. let me know what you find and how it works !
@@teresajohnson9784 yes maam. Believe it or not she is still active and still her crop is sour. Is it common to go on this long? It's been 2 weeks and she has lost a significant amount of weight. I have done everything I can think of or research and she seems to be getting better but still not over it. Her crop goes from soft and squishy to form from day to day. It definitely smells terrible when I massage it. Ivesone the ACV and garlic water. Even the baking soda flush once and made hwe vomit after times. I check on her around the clock amd a few ti.es I've noticed the clear fluid coming out her beak , but not much. Honestly the crop isn't all that big. I also treated her with a pea size amount of goat dewormer. So what I think is the worms has either temporarily slowed her digestive tract down or it has permanently damaged it. Bc today I've noticed she actually has formed feces for the first time since she became ill. So she must be getting som.e of the food down. She has to be bc without any going on shes be long gone by now. She doesn't seem to be suffering or in any major distress so I'm hoping she is gonna pull thru. Although 2 days ago I was already acceptin her demise bc she wAs very fatigued .kept closing her eyes while standing and was very pale around her eyes. I cried that night bc I just new when I woke up she'dbe gone. To my surprise tho she seemed better. So is there anything I'm doing wrong or could possibly do more. I just cant afford a vet trip on a chicken. Thank you do much for your help and wisdom

@@teresajohnson9784 I appreciate the response and actually I have already watched that video I just was wondering if there's a way to tell the difference between water or egg build up but I guess sticking her with a needle it's probably the only way I'm going to get an answer to that I seen a Blog about using one teaspoon of Epsom salt diluted in 1 oz of lukewarm water to help flush out their system have you heard that before do you think it could benefit her or could it hurt? Man I wish we had a vet that dealt with chickens around my location but as far as I know the closest one I've been able to locate is it a wildlife rescue center and they won't like 85 bucks just to look at her:( This really sucks I don't want to lose her I just lost one suddenly on the 20th of this month. she was fine one day and then the next evening when we let the girls out to forage around the yard I noticed she was the only one still in the pen and it's been about an hour and a half two hours she really hadn't moved when I brought it up to my stepdad he enlighten me that he didn't think she had been out of the coop pretty much all day which left me a little upset that it wasn't brought to my attention earlier. when I approached her in the pain she was breathing so hard her back end was just going up and down and up and down she made it through the night I'm giving her some medicine and I don't want to get too graphic on here cuz I don't know the rules but to in short it was heartbreaking to watch her flail around as the last breaths&liquids came out of her. And then back in November I lost my bestest friend, more like my little kid, I changed her diaper for goodness sake. She was so smart, very little training it was all her, my little Miss. Red Red she would ride on my shoulder, by choice, everywhere like a little parakeet but a 🐔! She would have turned 3 in January and I have no clue what happened it was so sudden she was outside for like 20 minutes and that was it, so I'm guessing she must have choked on something, my heart breaks still to this day. The thought of an necropsy didn't even cross my mind, honestly I could not see myself doing that to her or probably any of the others for that matter but if something happens to this one I might try to bring myself to do it, just to find out what's wrong so I can try to prevent it with the rest of the girls. I apologize for the long tangent but any advice would be greatly appreciative thanks again.

I'm having this problem for the first time. She's 6 months old and laying for two weeks. She had terrible poppy but and something red protruding. I soaked her in the tub and the protrusion went away. I'm worried she is still not OK. What should I do?
Sounds like a prolapse vent if it went back in and stays in .. it happens sometimes after laying a large egg.. if it STAYS out .. its not good .. lubricate it with a bit of preparation H and gently push it back in .. give her calcium and magnesium and if she is over weight cut back on high protein treats like mealworms ... let me know if you have further issues
Teresa Johnson thank you! See LAYED an egg today, but I believe it is a prolapsed vent. She also appears to have developed an infection (vent gleet?). I have been washing the area and using Vetericyn. I will try the prep H when I wash her up tonight. Will let you know.
My hen is currently eggbound, I tried everything I know, but nothing seems to work. Her abdomen is as hard as a rock. Gave her baths, massaging and calcium tablets, Also antibiotics and vitamines. Tried to drain her. Nothing works. If anyone got some advice, what else I could try, I would like to hear about it 😊 🐔🚑
If it has been over 48 hours .. she is not egg bound ... ( because 48 hours is the "mortality limit" If her belly is rock hard, there is a good chance she has been laying internally and/or has a tumor. Tumeric in her feed will act as a pain reliever and anti inflammatory and will possibly reduce the size of a tumor ... I wish you the best If it has not been 48 hours .. give her lots of dark quiet area to relax.. and repeat the tums, and epsom salts bath ( and blow dryer ) every 6 hours
Teresa Johnson Thank you so much for your fast response. Its way over 48 hours. I think she's laying internally like you said. Because when I tried to extract fluid, I only got out a tiny bit, and it smelled like rotten eggs. Don't think she's gonna make it much longer. She can' t eat anymore, she wants to, but then she throws up. Try to make as much time as I can for my sweet girl. Thank you for your help Teresa
Sorry . I replied to this I thought ... I had suggested you find some CBD oil if it is legal in your state .. it will relieve her pain quite well.. and if you decide to humanely put her down she will be much more relaxed.
Teresa Johnson It is legal here, didn't tought about that actually. But I have given her painrelief, I don't want her to suffer. Because of the painrelief, its like she's oke now. Eats little bits, even walking around a little. But if she can't take it anymore, I will let her put to sleep. Have a nice day Theresa, thank you 😊
We noticed that our little hen wasn’t doing as well as her sisters, felt up her vent and realized she had an egg stuck up there. We went and soaked her in warm water and epsom salt, about an hour later she passes it as soon as we were gonna try and help her get it out!
Is your parrot with any other birds? Have you bred her at all? Breeding schedules can help avoid egg binding. Has she recently been moved, lost an owner, or a favorite toy? anything else that could have caused stress? Are you fairly certain she is egg bound? as it is not as common in Parrots as it is in parakeets and small birds. Is she pulsating at her oviduct/lethargic? If you believe she truly is egg bound, and has been for a while.. she should see a vet for removal and inspection of internal laying. This MAY work, and SHOULD work, but I would give her a good dose of calcium, and vitamins A,D, and E If there is no change in the immediate short term ... well there are times when even I .. will consult a vet ( rare.... but it happens ) I will check back in to see if you have replied.. good wishes. and Prayers
I have heard of that .. actually if it is that bad that I needed lubricant .. there is definitely an infection as well.. I would use coconut oil for its antibacterial properties
but we lost her last night It broke my heart she was my Baby as they all are ! She seemed to be leaking a yellow and white liquid . I hope this never happens again !
My chicken became egg bound. I fixed her. If they aren't drinking you can use a syringe to spray water they're beak and they will drink it up. that's what I have to do with my chicken because she wasn't drinking water
If I have one not drinking, I usually hold a bowl of water under their beak, and tip the water to the edge of the bowl. when the water comes up under their beak.. they will usually swallow .. and that normally leads to them dipping their own beak into the water and drinking
No Amanda... I think I have only dealt with this twice in my chicken raising years .. it usually moves along without a hitch.

Prayers

Teresa Johnson You raise your own livestock. If I had my own farm I would too! But my reality is that I don't know if what I am eating is truly safe.
That is true, Even though I still buy meats.. I try to buy local ... it really bugs me to buy a chicken breast at the store and see that is has 40% (liquid for juiciness added to it) And then thinking about the horrible living conditions most commercially raised animals had to live in!
You also kill life with being vegan.
Fruits and vegetables also produce through mating.
Every plant in fact does.
Killing them doesn't make you saint.
I never knew any of this. Grew up in the city. Thanks for the education.

Mg relaxes muscles. Ca would oppose the Mg. Epsom salt bath sounds great. Thanks for this video!
Thank you! I have a chicken in pain here as well. Your video was helpfull! I hope the epson salt bath works here as well.
Thank you so much you saved her life 🙏🌎
Please help, I have a 5 month old pullet that I believe may be egg bound, she's been tail down for almost 2 weeks.
@@janedavis7714 I hope you ate that chicken what a waste of meat amd you coiod hsve had a boiked or cooked egg as treat after it was cooked
How many day total you think a hen can on if she is able to poop
Can you use scented Empson salt in their bath my hen us egg bound and we only have 3 hens and a rooster 😥
When talking about giving vitamins are they specifically for chickens and if so where do you purchase them?
Most of the vitamins I give are human vitamins ...
@@teresajohnson9784 is there a specific type of calcium c ?
@@melodygray2727 No. even tums will work
I’ve given so many baths and can feel the egg itself with an inserted mineral oil lubricated gloves finger.
One of my ducks is facing this problem, thanks so much for the helpful informative!
Let me know if I can help, best of luck.
Teresa Johnson I appreciate that! She released the egg yesterday after an epsom salt bath, and now she is no longer panting, but is still tired and worn out. We are giving her lots of love and some calcium/magnesium in hopes she can feel better.
@@crudeFLORL Very glad to hear

Can I use sea salt if I don't have Epsom
Where i buy magnesium or vitamin supplements
Not sure where you live .. but Magnesium salt is Epsom Salt easy to find here in the States in every Pharmacy .. I also buy Human vitamins at the same stores and use them on my animals
Wow you are really good! With your chickens 🐓
Thanks hun .. they bring me joy .. I try to give them a good life in return
So you just soaked her and put her in her own space ❤ What kind of Food? Or water??
This is so helpful and reassuring, thank you!
Please let me know if I can further assist!
SO she needs more calcium in general ?
Egg binding can be caused by several things Molting, stress, illness, etc.. the calcium simply aids contractions of the oviduct in passing the blocked egg.
Hey thank you so much for this video, if the calcium chewables are a lemon flavor is it still ok to crushup and give to my eggbound chick ? (I bought lemon flavor accidently for her)
Did she passed the eggs hope she make it
Is there a home remedy for sour crop ?
Can Eason salt be used for duck with suspected ascites?
The epsom salt is a magnesiun suppliment absorbed through the skin.. it doesn't do anything for ascetis, but an epsom salt bath is my go to first step to make certain they are not egg bound .. since egg binding is usually fatal within 48 hours
Thanks for this I had a hen that had this problem now I know what to do if it happens again.
Would I have to feed my chicken yogurt and soak her in salt everyday until she leaves? Also how much salt should I put and can it be any salt?
I meant lays not leaves

Omg I’m sooo glad she’s doing good
This old girl got about an extra year of a great life before she crossed over in her sleep comfortably.. we miss her but are thankful she had some extra time.
You are amazing thank you so much.
Does it have to be Empson salt?
Pure magnesium Salt most often called Epsom Salts
Teresa Johnson thank you!
Most welcome, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!
Teresa Johnson would other salts work the same? Is there another thing other than Epsom salt? I don't know where to get Epsom salt 😭😭😭
+Natalie Lo
We didn't have it either, used just warm water, worked. The sooner you help the bird the better chance of full recovery.
Does an egg bound hen poo at all?
When they do .. it usually becomes a nasty sticky mess
Sorry for your loss hun .. give yourself some time ... when its right .. you will know it.
Do you have guinea fowl
I keep between 50 and 100 per year .. curretly sold flock back to 35
Mine seems to have liquid not egg back there, I bathed, fed and separated her for the night
If its water belly it will feel like a soft water balloon
Helped me so much thank you!!
Good .. so glad it was helpful !
Kimberly Since i have never personally dealt with sour crop I cannot give you first hand advise .. but I agree with the concept of the link I am attaching .. the only thing I think I would do extra . is to give the bird colloidal Silver water . since I know bacteria cannot live in the pesence of silver . take a look at this advice . and let me know how it goes . I have a hen who's belly is swollen almost like she's impregnated, I know she's not, and Waddles like a penguin but she's not showing any signs of being in pain or that she's sick other than a massively swollen belly, you can't even feel her chest bone that's how swollen her tummy is. Any advice or help would be awesome this is been going on for for 5 days now maybe.

Man I wish we had a vet that dealt with chickens around my location but as far as I know the closest one I've been able to locate is it a wildlife rescue center and they won't like 85 bucks just to look at her:(
This really sucks I don't want to lose her I just lost one suddenly on the 20th of this month. she was fine one day and then the next evening when we let the girls out to forage around the yard I noticed she was the only one still in the pen and it's been about an hour and a half two hours she really hadn't moved when I brought it up to my stepdad he enlighten me that he didn't think she had been out of the coop pretty much all day which left me a little upset that it wasn't brought to my attention earlier. when I approached her in the pain she was breathing so hard her back end was just going up and down and up and down she made it through the night I'm giving her some medicine and I don't want to get too graphic on here cuz I don't know the rules but to in short it was heartbreaking to watch her flail around as the last breaths&liquids came out of her.

Yeah how do you stop that getting egg bound wish I was a way to find out how you chickens I'm getting their way to stop that
I'm having this problem for the first time.
Give her calcium to help with egg production moving along more regularly... and magnesium to help with muscle toning to pass the eggs
I'm thinking too much shell grit may cause. egg bound. excess calcium goes to arterial lining & brain.
Thank you so much!!!!!
Great video. Thank you
Thank you !
Have a nice day Theresa, thank you 😊
I h ave seen some people rub olive oil inside the duct to help slide the egg out.
We noticed that our little hen wasn’t doing as well as her sisters, felt up her vent and realized she had an egg stuck up there. We went and soaked her in warm water and epsom salt, about an hour later she passes it as soon as we were gonna try and help her get it out!
Does this work for parrots too?
Is your parrot with any other birds? Have you bred her at all? Breeding schedules can help avoid egg binding. Has she recently been moved, lost an owner, or a favorite toy? anything else that could have caused stress? Are you fairly certain she is egg bound? as it is not as common in Parrots as it is in parakeets and small birds. Is she pulsating at her oviduct/lethargic? If you believe she truly is egg bound, and has been for a while.. she should see a vet for removal and inspection of internal laying. This MAY work, and SHOULD work, but I would give her a good dose of calcium, and vitamins A,D, and E If there is no change in the immediate short term ... well there are times when even I .. will consult a vet ( rare.... but it happens ) I will check back in to see if you have replied.. good wishes. and Prayers
Teresa Johnson nope haven't bred her at all. I'm curious if this technique works for most birds?
If caught early enough it should
I also saw a guy squirting mineral oil in the vent to lubricate it then used his finger to lubricate the inside when the soak did not work
I have heard of that .. actually if it is that bad that I needed lubricant .. there is definitely an infection as well.. I would use coconut oil for its antibacterial properties
we are having the same problem with one of our hens

@@terryedge3423 You are most welcome, Have a good evening
I call the softshell eggs. Nasty but thankfully she seems much better after passing it.
My mom's chicken have the same problem, let see how this works.
I have 2 videos on ths .. they have helped many chickens here is the other video th-cam.com/video/1G7GWlkq_6M/w-d-xo.html
im happy for the hen
My chicken became egg bound. I fixed her. If they aren't drinking you can use a syringe to spray water they're beak and they will drink it up. that's what I have to do with my chicken because she wasn't drinking water
Be careful doing that it is easy to cause aspiration in a chicken that way ... That hole in the back of their tongue goes to their lungs.
I sprayed it on they're beak, and they gobbled it up. I didn't put it in the mouth
If I have one not drinking, I usually hold a bowl of water under their beak, and tip the water to the edge of the bowl. when the water comes up under their beak.. they will usually swallow .. and that normally leads to them dipping their own beak into the water and drinking
what are you doing
Whoever edited this deserves to be sued. I needed to know about the hardness you were feeling
Oyster shell, crushed egg shells, calcium powder on crumbled food, alfalfa, anything calcium fortifying. Feed it to them.
we are the same
Hope it works for you !
You don't have to do this for every hen about to lay eggs.. just if they seem to have a stuck egg.
No Amanda... I think I have only dealt with this twice in my chicken raising years .. it usually moves along without a hitch.
