She was so pretty and so talented ! She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the late 50's film "Sayonara". And later in the late 60s she played a housekeeper in the ABC sitcom "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", opposite Bill Bixby.
I Remember the First Time I saw Flower Drum Song, with my Mom,At The Paramount Theatre,in Palm Beach Fla,1967,I Thought it was a Beautiful Movie, and Became My Favorite Move,53 Years Later Look forward To Getting This Beautiful Movie as a Keep Sake,Cherished Memory of A Beautiful Favorite Movie &Cherished time in,my Life with my Mom.
Growing up as a Korean adoptee in a white family and white community, this was one of my only exposures to anything Asian. I loved watching this growing up.
Love the story and the songs and especially my hometown of San Francisco in the pre-Summer of Love era of hats, gloves, suits and ties and so forth. Another favorite song from this play is "Love, Look Away."
doesn't have to belt a high nice notes to be a stellar performance. personally realize a prelude to the wonderful feeling i have now. She was right. A Hundred Million Miracles Happens EVERYDAY!!
I just started watching this movie with my mom last year at August on channel TCM (Turner Classic Movies). At first, I only wanted to see Nancy Kwan when we started at the beginning but I ended up watching the whole thing. To be honest I'm not of watching oldies but when I first watched this movie, I fell in love with this movie. I love this movie so much.
Miyoshi Umeki could sing English songs without a trace of an accent. In the FDS, she sang in character as a new immigrant. After her role as Mrs. Livingston in the Courtship of Eddie's Father, she retired from show business. Finding that her early successes in Sayonara and FDS could not be repeated. In 2007, she passed away from cancer, at the age of 78, in Missouri where her son lived.
Gotta love R&H. excellent songs and stories that convey a social message. FDS was about immigration and assimilation, "South Pacific" tackled racism, "Carousel" about domestic violence, "Sound of Music" was about resisting Nazism.

Delightful woman. Fine dramatic actress. Loved her in SAYONARA. Here, she is dainty but very articulate. And in the series EDDIE'S FATHER, she held her own just fine against Bill Bixby, as "Mrs. Livingston"...
Miyoshi is one of the only actors in the movie whose performance goes beyond just being an archetype and into an actual character. Her face has a kind of Audrey Hepburn quality.
If Oscar Hammerstein knew Chinese culture, then 10000 would be a very large number and the title of this song would be Ten-Thousand Miracles. This scene takes place at St. Mary's Square in San Francisco, between Pine and California Streets, east of Grant Avenue. The statue is a stainless steel creation of Benny Bufano of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Despite the passing of 54 years, everything is still there if you visit San Francisco.
For 10 years, from 1980-90, I worked right across Pine St. from St. Mary's Square and ate my lunch under the Sun Yat Sen statue pictured above many times. I got to pay that back on Oct. 17,1989, when I was personally responsible for keeping Long-distance and emergency communications working OUT of San Francisco during the Loma Prieta Quake. I've wandered the streets and alleys of Chinatown many times over the years.
"Miracles":...."Hong Kong - China" meet in "America". Nancy Kwan, Miyoshi Umeki portraying [American Cinema] at its best! All for [Prosperity & Opportunity] establishing [Cultural & Family Values] for [Growth on American Soil]. To the Point: Let [Freedom Shine] on the [Land of the Free] for all of [Sound Heart, Body & Mind]. Amen. The American way..."In God we Trust"!
When I first watched this film on TV in the '60s, I was surprised and a bit annoyed when the onlookers suddenly all chimed in "Very wet!" at 3:53. Up till then it had been a quasi-realistic setting in a city, with passers-by gathering to watch an impromptu street performance. Suddenly the artifice was glaringly shown.
Smart comment. A lot of the great Rodgers and Hammerstein songs are alike. This is ludicrous. It tells us that two immigrants from China, just off the boat, are suddenly able to not only speak perfect English but sing elaborate lyrics as well. On the stage this worked, here, on the screen it's embarrassing. On the stage you never questioned how silly this is because in a theater you have an entirely different response to fantasy. On film, all of it is magnified. So what was charming is suddenly absurd.
I recall that she died of cancer shortly after "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" in the late 60's, but now I just found out she died of cancer a couple of years ago. Someone is really messing with my head. Richard Dawson was supposed to have died in the late 70's, but he is still alive. What the H is going on!??
Fun fact, at 3:50 the woman in the leopard top to the left of the singer, she messes up twice at "very wet" where she's late, and turns to her "husband" as if it was super cute to brush off her mistake. And in stead of "happening every day," she mouths the words "every way."
Did Myoshi actually sing this whole song? The spoken part of it sounds like her. But the part that's sung sounds more like Marni Nixon. She sang the vocals for Julie Andrews and many other actresses back during the musical heyday.
I saw this film and the show in the sixties .my aunty were soon singing the songs every morning in brighton .
One of the most beautiful films ever made and this is perhaps the prettiest song.
I like love look away
Jeez, I’m getting goosebumps after all these years...perfect song.
Just adore her. Saw this first-run in a movie theater as a child and there's hardly been a day since that the song doesn't pop into my head.

"Fine, but do not sing too loud" *Takes out gong*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
A hundred million miracles should be said when you wake up and when you go to bed. Because every day is a grand day
Love the story and the songs and especially my hometown of San Francisco in the pre-Summer of Love era of hats, gloves, suits and ties and so forth. Another favorite song from this play is "Love, Look Away."

why stop there, one hundred trillion miracles happen everyday now!
Among the "miracles" she sings of, she might have included her own sweet self.
I just started watching this movie with my mom last year at August on channel TCM (Turner Classic Movies). I have been singing this song for 57 yrs😮❤

cdman88, boy do I miss movies (and times) like this.
The beauty of realizing One hundred million miracles are happening every day!!
Love this song. Great memories.
This song almost makes me cry every time.
Gotta love R&H. excellent songs and stories that convey a social message. FDS was about immigration and assimilation, "South Pacific" tackled racism, "Carousel" about domestic violence, "Sound of Music" was about resisting Nazism.
'The King and I' focused on education.
Could be eminent domain for "Oklahoma"
“We are illegal. It is unlucky to start in a new country by breaking the law.”

I got the movie for my mother for Christmas! This is her favorite song from the score!
Miyoshi Umeki - A Hundred Million Miracles from the 1961 Movie Musical "Flower Drum Song "
A timely reminder that a hundred million miracles are happening every day!😇
Aww, Misses Livingston had such a beautiful voice :)
Loved it when I was little and found myself humming it [this evening] and took a trip to the "Tube" to relive it! Thank you for sharing!!1
A very beautiful film. Thank you for sharing this.
Delightful woman. Fine dramatic actress. Loved her in SAYONARA. Here, she is dainty but very articulate. And in the series EDDIE'S FATHER, she held her own just fine against Bill Bixby, as "Mrs. Livingston"...
Mr. Eddie’s father ☺️
she was the original on the Broadway show.
This is the "Flower Drum Song" of the movie "Flower Drum Song".
In 1961, this movie aired & song, "A Hundred Million Miracles" is forever in my ❤ along with the 🎥.
My aunty and me .i also bought the small e.p. for my record player .
The first Asian actress to win the Oscar!
One of my favorite movies... Nice to see so many good vids at utube. Thanks! :~)
She is so beautiful
i've seen this musical about 4 times. i just loved it! thanx for posting!
My favorite movie& and love this song.
I awoke singing this song today. We should all be singing it. Never more relevant.
Can't beat R&H composition, "and those who say rhey don't agree " the chord change from minor to major they've used in Cindrella
You called it! "A Hundred Million Miracles" reminds me of Rodgers' "Impossible (Things are Happening Everyday)" from "Cinderella" 👏👏
Thank you!!!! 😆 There are a lot of similarities! It’s like Disney using same scenes, dances, movements, songs, etc.
Miyoshi is one of the only actors in the movie whose performance goes beyond just being an archetype and into an actual character.
Her face has a kind of Audrey Hepburn quality.
Beautiful video and recording. thanks
i love this movie miyashi umeki was so adorable, and i love this song it is so pretty.
"But do not sing too loud".....then father goes and bangs a gong. Giggle.
Just beautiful!

100,000,000 is 10,000 ten thousands, so...
A hundred million provides much more syllables which fits the meter better.
I love this song - A Hundred Million Miracles - for YOU🙏🏼♥️😇🌏🌺

My grandsons are similar ages as this actress* I'm 69 & I saw this as a young girl!
Love nice movies like this
"Miracles":...."Hong Kong - China" meet in "America".
Amen.

This movie came out in 1961,Kennedy was President and our nation was at its apex or height of greatness
What a stupid thing to get upset about.
I'm gonna guess you never watched a lot of Hollywood musicals.
According to IMDB, she died of cancer at 78.
I remember her in The Courtship of Eddie's Father. She was wonderful.
Bill Bixby once said that she was one of the most talented actresses he ever met.
My Chinese history professor said he was embarrassed by this movie and was not happy that Miyoshi Umeki was actually Japanese.
Back then, they probably just figured "oh she looks Asian enough, audiences won't know"
really good song and movie kinda sad made wish i could have met the people
I’ve always loved this song but it’s the same as Cinderella’s “In my own little corner, in my own little chair...”.
Smart comment. A lot of the great Rodgers and Hammerstein songs are alike. This is ludicrous. It tells us that two immigrants from China, just off the boat, are suddenly able to not only speak perfect English but sing elaborate lyrics as well. great song but volume is terrible you need to fix sound barely hear it
Miyoshi Umeki died today on 9/5/2007 aged 78.
❤️
My mom had this record when I was little.
A followup news story corrected this date to August 28, 2007.
Yes.
that was cute

1961, I think.
The Broadway production opened in '58.
Was she Mrs. Livingston from The Courtship of Eddie's father?
Fun fact, at 3:50 the woman in the leopard top to the left of the singer, she messes up twice at "very wet" where she's late, and turns to her "husband" as if it was super cute to brush off her mistake. And in stead of "happening every day," she mouths the words "every way."
There is an hommage in South Park for her.
However, I found out about her by watching old What's My Line clips.
We ordered 100 Million Miracles chicken. Tasted just like the other chicken dishes.
5 stars!
I think she was really singing here.
Did Myoshi actually sing this whole song? The spoken part of it sounds like her. But the part that's sung sounds more like Marni Nixon. She sang the vocals for Julie Andrews and many other actresses back during the musical heyday.
Marnie sang for Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr. Julie didn't need to be dubbed. Nether did Meyoshi.
Imagine, as ONE > A Hundred Million Miracles wwNeighbors
anyone know where i can get an Mp3 of this?
I wonder if she played piano because she has long fingers that could stretch across a keyboard.
Did this movie take place in an alternate reality where a dystopian society is ruled by Dr. Evil? Or did I just read way too deep into that statue?
What did she die of ? I saw this film when it was on the big screen
Looks like she's singing "live" -- not lip-synching!
so was all of los angeles.
there is a better record of this.. i think it was remove.. i always listen to this songs almost everyday..
Who else saw it?
America is a very sad place.
Yes. Then she retired from the business and chose to live far from the public eye. Good for her.
Sorry to disagree but this one and the (odious imho) I enjoy being a girl are my least favorite in this musical. Much prefer Don't Marry Me
