Nice story Gareth, no doubt you're eternally grateful, I think we all have someone like Declan as a mentor who we can thank. In my case it was my Grandfather and Father who helped me from age 7 years, I'm now in my 70's and still getting as much from the sport as when I first started. Great video as always!
Nice video, i have been watching your videos for a few years now, and i love your mix of content, it's never boring. I still remember the first time I saw a trout being caught on a fly rod. I went out and bought a cheap fiberglass rod with my paper run money, and I was hooked.I have been fly fishing now for 32 years. And i still have that rod in my garage
I'm just learning to cast, but I met an older couple in my town that is no longer able to fish, and they gave me a ton of flies they'd tied and a bunch of gear and really motivated me to get out there and try harder. Super excited to get on some trout soon!
Another nice vid, Gareth. As someone who has had a mentor that turned their fishing world around by generously sharing their knowledge, support and friendship...I can certainly relate to how it feels when you get to pay a little bit of it back. Oh yeah, the fish are pretty nice as well...🤣
Hey Trout Hunter!!! I've watched a ton of your videos and love them all but this one really jumps out at me as it's the first I've seen where you've encountered other people fishing other than you and your companion. I'm not just blown away by the fishing but the fact that these and streams seem almost vacant of fishermen. You Kiwis are too dam lucky. Keep posting.....Deano
I think most people remember the first time we caught our first trout on fly.... it's a pivotal moment in our journey. You cast , you strike and finally.... you land..... Lets never forget the people who helped us, and like any guild or movement please help someone experience the same - For me, thanks Buck
What a great story Gareth and it was so great you got to spend some time fishing with him. Great video as always it a great way to start my Sunday morning.
I really enjoyed this one. I haven't been able to get across the ditch since the first lockdown (was in Turangi when the PM announced it and had to high-tail it back to Auckland to get back to Australia). I miss it so much - and your videos are keeping me going.
Another great video, Those fish are so big!! Nice Bows. Pretty cool of you to take Declan out for the day. Can't wait to get out on the water with you next year. As long as your borders open up again. Cheers mate
Well Done! Glad to see it come around- Very cool, nice fish you both caught. I know Declan got me back into flyfishing Too!. Thanks for the trip G. brother G
For some ppl to be rich is cars, money, houses... For me it would be able to flyfish every day...and acces to water like this😃😃😃😃 and mayby some small creek to fish with 2-3 wt....Great vidoes man!!!
Declan isn’t wrong, the Taieri has some epic fishing for big brown trout. It’s where I film quite a lot of my videos. Next time you’re down South we’ll get out for a couple days, never endless amount of water as well.
Hi Gareth, beautiful drone shots as usual that show off the water better than hundreds of words. Oh yea, nice bit of guide work by you (you do have a consistency of forgetting your net), must be pay back time for the tuition you got when you first started fishing properly, like! Huge fish, pity the river looks so drab compare to the blue sky. Good days fishing, cheers mate. Harera
I hesitate to call you a lucky bastard as I've not yet met you! But you are a luck bastard! Well done, thanks for sharing; keep up the great work and I hope I get to fish with you before the end of time! 👌✌😎 Peace! 👍
Nice Video. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful fish. I won't ask the name of the river, but is this on the north or south Island? What are you calling the 'ditch'? I'm in the US, and really want to come sample the fishing.
Not sure if it’s already been asked but how do those fish get so big? Are they naturally like that or are they fed fish food by local fishery or something ?
Was curious obout why way more of these really big trout, especially males, seem to have a dislocated jaw? Do you know how or why this happens? Do they recover?
@@russelrogers2540 one place is a salmon farm and trout sit underneath a grate and eat the protein food, but the main reason they are so big is perfect temps and food. Too cold they digest too slowly, too hot they don’t get to use the nutrients. It’s a perfect balance

My brother and I had a guy at our local lake. Changed everything when it comes to fishing.

Awesome video man, really cool to hear how it all started for you. Your mates got a cool accent hahah
That's me
Great vid
Awesome video again man! Those Jacks aren't too pretty, but man those Hen's are absolutely stunning!!
Nice Video. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful fish. I won't ask the name of the river, but is this on the north or south Island? What are you calling the 'ditch'? I'm in the US, and really want to come sample the fishing.
Why do you wind the reel for right hand retrieve, and have to keep changing hands?
Magnificient
Hey Garth, Great video and huge fish. Why do the jacks have open mouths..
Not sure if it’s already been asked but how do those fish get so big? Are they naturally like that or are they fed fish food by local fishery or something ?
How old are these bigger rainbows? Do they get their size because of the shrimp you mentioned? Crazy
What size leader/tippet you catching those monsters with? Beautiful fish! Bucket list type of fishing there.
Nice.😆 😆.💪
Wow
Why is there such a high number of old Jacks with the lock-jaw?
Fished the Mataura river
Was curious obout why way more of these really big trout, especially males, seem to have a dislocated jaw?
Do you know how or why this happens? Do they recover?
Because of there overly large mass and there normally spawning fighting behaviour they often end up with dislocation of the jaw. Theory
@@TroutHuntingNZ interesting. Would love researchers to figure this one out!
Mantap,,
Oh... and Alex
Yoo wassup how y’all been big ass fish dude I wanna catch one😂
Anyone know what kind of trout this is??? It's not rainbow, is it?
why you release them after catching
If I didn’t they would die!
🐟👍👍💯👍✌😄
Wonderful footage. What large trout with hook jaw and all. What country were you fishing in?
No trees
great video! please don't use tailing gloves/nets. wet hands are way better.
Yeah cheers.
Algorithm comment!
I appreciate that 🤙
yeah ok..i bet you did start there
Declan sounds like a Yank?
These fish are mutant freaks, who is responsible for stocking them? Definitely not suitable for the table, yuck!!!
There wild
@@TroutHuntingNZ There must be one heck of a food base for them to get SO big. Great time with a friend on the water and some great fish caught.
