I would be cautious letting your sons learn from a guy whose animals consistently die prematurely. Blake truly has no grasp on how to actually take proper care of these animals
Have you thought about a floating plant corral in that tank to keep nutrients and nitrates in checks It's pretty simple use some pool noodles and netting And the plants would be Water Lettuce and Hyacinth with has hungry hanging roots

What if you put a layer of big river rocks in your monster pond then you can keep a bunch of crawfish to eat any uneaten food and help keep it cleaner and give the fish something to chase LoL
I think well water with a little tint is much better than clear city water with chlorine and the other chemicals in it. Paul's well has a tint also and no problems with his fish :-0
I'm curious, is that water too deep for that turtle to be swimming up for a gulp of air day in and day out. You should have different resting areas at different depths of that tank, this way he doesn't have to go all the way to the bottom if he chooses not too. I have no experience with those turtle's so this is pure speculation on my part and for all i know this could be a perfect setup. Wish you and that tank the best
