I have been a massive madonna's fan since 1993 and I swear to God: I have never noticed the word "fear" on the back of the dancers before, in Human nature ... until YOU pointed my attention to that! and now, I love the video and the song even more! That is another example of how much your reviews are deep, well prepared and interesting. I am afraid I might seriously be in love with you!
The power of goodbye was an inspiration of a movie, by an old Joan Crawford movie; about a terrible breakup that unfortunately, led to her Demise. One of my favorite Madonna videos.
I think in the scene where Madonna as the wealthy blond character and the housekeeper it has less to do with class but more to do with age? The blond character was envious that the housekeeper was still young, hence the botox scene afterwards.
Re Human nature, interestingly, her choice of hairstyle was purely practical; her hair was blonde at the time so they braided it in such a way that only her natural regrowth was showing, thus matching the aesthetic of the video. As for "fear" and "envy," I interpret them as the feelings harboured by those who oppose Madonna's message of sexual liberation and thus want to confine her the way they've confined themselves (or are confined by societal norms and expectations, however you choose to look at it). The pentogram in the ropes is something I personally interpret as a nod to all the headlines during the Sex era labelling her as a witch and the devil. Love your reactions and insights x
The Power of Goodbye was inspired by the film Humoresque (1946) where Joan Crawford does end her life in the ocean. But I believe Madonna left her ending vague and up to interpretation. There’s a scene of the movie compared to the music video on TH-cam.
Yes. The ending of the film Joans character commits suicide. The entire scene is shot by shot the second half of the Power Of Goodbye video. Humoresque is a fantastic film.
I never thought this video was vague. Madonna downs drown herself at the end. Just look at the lighting which hints at her being submerged (even decaying) through most of the video. I do think it's all metaphorical though. The drowning of herself is really about the drowning of the part of herself that desired this bad relationship.
I recommend these Madonna music videos: Don't tell me, drowned world/substitute for love, and Hung up. Oh, fun fact, billboard named Madonna the greatest music video artist of all time ahead of Michael Jackson
Human Nature was a direct response to the media who completely dragged her and called her every typical misogynistic name in the book over her previous Erotica album and accompanying SEX book. I love how no matter the criticism, she found a way to use it to her advantage.
The black and white scene with Madonna hitching a ride in a trenchcoat may refer to a photo by Steven Meisel in their 1992 book 'Sex'. On that pic Madonna's hitching a ride wearing only heels and holding a purse. The 'photoshoot' scenes are recreations of fashion photographs from the 1970s by French photographer Guy Bourdin.
Human Nature and Hollywood, are two of my fav song from her career, they are awesome. Would love to see an video with Nothing Really Matters, Deeper and Deeper and Ghosttown or an version of this format with Finer Feelings, Confide in Me and All The Lovers from Kylie!! Love your videos!
Love your analysis of Hollywood! The one thing I would add to the analysis of Power of Goodbye is that by entering the water she is purifying herself from the toxic relationship. I don't think she commits suicide. I think it's symbolic and when she appears at the end it's showing a new beginning even though she's not the same as before.
At the time of release... there was NO uproar over the "Human Nature" video at all. It was tame, for M, at that time. LOL It was actually nominated for Choreography.
Along with the reference to Guy Bourdain in Hollywood, Madonna is also wearing vintage jewellery once owned by Mae West in the scenes with the girl dressed as a French maid. Which in turn is referencing Jean Harlow in Dinner at eight with her maid dressed the same way. Although Harlow wore white for the entire movie. But it makes Hollywood even more “Hollywood” with these subtle references!
I don't remember much controversy about "Human Nature." It was tame compared to "Justify My Love" and "Erotica" (which were big scandals) and this song/video was a response to the backlash to that whole period. I wish she would have committed to the suicide storyline in "The Power of Good-bye." During the Erotica era she probably would have done it, but I know she was in a very positive/spiritual mood during this time and as you said water is a cleansing symbol throughout the Ray Of Light album so I think she intended it to be ambiguous. It's also inspired by the classic film Humoresque, which does indeed include a suicide.
Hello Eric! Another amazing analysis! The chihuahua in the Human Nature video was included as a humoristic element and it was called Chiquita. In the Power of Goodbye video the chess scene was inspired by that in the 1968 heist film The Thomas Crown Affair (with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway) The scenes showing Madonna walking alone on the beach was an homage to actress Joan Crawford in the 1946 film Humoresque.
Good work! I've been a Madonna fan for 28 years and it's interesting and fun to see your reactions to the videos and then your analysis. You definitely have an accurate point of view.
Eric, you are so intelligent and sensitive. Thank you so much for this reactions and your precious words about these videos. And (sorry for this comment) you are even more handsome! 👏
Your analysis of Hollywood was great! The chihuahua in Human Nature was her own dog. I never noticed the head shavings before ! Thanks!! Already waiting for your next Madonna video
very good analysis, I actually noticed watching this video that a lot of Madonna's visual work deals with power dynamics and it's a common theme all throughout her career.
Human Nature is also lyrically quite the literal response Madonna had to her Erotica album and SEX book backlash, as she says ”Oops, I didn’t know we couldn’t talk about sex” among other lines. The title Human Nature itself refers to the innate need for sexuality and self-expression that she discussed on Erotica and how she was told off by the public about daring to shed light on such a natural, human thing, I think.
Eric, you must Google Guy Bourdin fashion photography from the 70s. You'll see every image from the Hollywood video. Also interesting to note is both Hollywood and Human Nature were directed by Jean Baptiste Mondino, another French fashion photographer. He also directed Open your Heart, Justify my love, and Don't tell Me.
Eric, you never fail us. I was a bit curious how would you feel about these more subtle videos, as on the surface compared to what you started it with, they might be seen as simple. But of course, you caught all of the tiny details and symbols and I'm so happy you liked them too! All of your interpretations were on point! P. S. Regarding the power of goodbye I always thought it's obvious death by drowning was implied, but madonna mentioned that there are a lot of elements of water appearing through ROL as she sees the element as purifying, so, I guess she wanted to say she went to the ocean to get cleansed. P. P. S. If you loved this, please watch Nothing really matter! The other two could be Music and Medellin or Dark ballet. Thank you for entertaining us 💜
In POG the scene where she walks into the ocean, it’s inspired by a classic Joan Crawford movie where the protagonist drowns herself. I agree Hollywood is an excellent video. It actually has aged fairly well. Thanks for the review
Great reactions! Madonna's "Human Nature" song and video are a response to the vitriol and criticism she received after her Erotica video and SEX book. Whenever she performs this during her tours it's a real treat for fans. As for the "Hollywood" video, the elegant blonde woman (seen with the maid) is reminiscent of the 1930s screen siren Jean Harlow (rather than Marilyn Monroe). All fantastic songs and videos! THX!
I remembered that the end part of the video on the beach was an homage to an old movie but I had to check Wikipedia to remember which movie. It told me that 'The scenes showing Madonna walking alone on the beach was an homage to actress Joan Crawford in the 1946 film Humoresque.'
Madonna has always been excellent at using videos to portray stories, themes and to break social norms as well as making commentary on relevant issues. Human Nature was one of my faves from Bedtime Stories. I took it as reinforcement of asking for what you want if you want to get it and making sure you do so you know if you and your partner mesh well, sexually as well as mentally, etc. Power of Goodbye is a beautiful song. Although there is a possible permanence in the goodbye in the video, I never went that far in my interpretation. More the idea that you let go and say good bye to habits, people, things that no longer serve you in your life. Not that something was necessarily wrong, just that it no longer works and moving on is the best choice. Hollywood is a fun ditty - there's an occasional electronic burble on a rift that I love. Nice treatise on how magical, mythical Hollywood is not what you hope it will be - that it is real, gritty and hard as anywhere else. Scruffy Eric meets with the internets approval.
Human Nature was Madonna's clap back at all those who gave her grief through the Justify My Love video, Erotica album, Sex book, Body of Evidence movie, and Girls Show Tour. Her declaration at the end ("Absolutely no regrets") while staring directly into the camera is directed at all those who tried to put her down and belittle her for being sexually bold in her topics.
It's always great to hear your fresh and thoughful analysis on these classic songs! Are you familiar with PJ Harvey? I'd love to hear your analysis of her early work like Rid of Me.
The 'Hollywood' video is an homage to the 70s fashion photography of Guy Bourdin. Although his family/estate didn't see it that way and successfully sued for appropriation.
The Joan Crawford character from the film this is largely inspired by actually does commit suicide successfully. It’s shot for shot the same. The man with the dog, the lantern on the beach, the shoes washing up, the closeup shot of crying and wiping her tears... It’s not as good a film as Mildred Pierce, but it’s still really good. I recommend it, even without the Madonna connection. In her more cinematic videos, always best to assume she’s been inspired by film. Madonna loves film.
I try to pay attention to what you say, but you’re too cute 😍😍😍 you should react to Madonna’s live performances too, like The Confessions Tour version of Live To Tell, it had the Vatican boycott her concert in Rome

Human nature was a F u to the critics that said her career was over during the sex book and erotic album they gave her hell for that and really did try to end her funny how the erotica album is now held as one of the most important of the '90s
I love you! But I think going forward it would serve you well to at least read the wiki article before a music video so your analysis/reaction can be more informed - such as knowing that the Power of Goodbye video was a reference to a movie, and that the Hollywood video was a blatant reference to Guy Bourdin photos. :)

@@jareds2273 very true. But Eric does such deep/meaningful analysis that I think doing a bit of research would make his reactions even better. Watching him talk about Hollywood analyzing all of the scenes was great but also felt a bit embarrassing because he was reading so much into them that may not have been there, but had he known he inspiration, would have made his analysis even better/more accurate I think. Maybe not a full "homework" job is needed before videos, but at least some knowledge of the references to expect?
@@ericmason6540 hi Eric. Great analysis as always. I also love reading about your process here. I think that’s a great idea to incorporate the Wiki notes. The video for Hollywood, for example, resulted in Madonna being sued by the photographer she was inspired by. Which might be a good idea - she should maybe stick to dead artists and poets to draw inspiration from. Lol. The song wasn’t a hit so not many people know the lawsuit behind it.
All the images used in the Hollywood video were directly taken from the photographer Guy Bourdain - his son sued Madonna for using the images without permission - they couldn't even really be described as "inspired by" because they are exact copies - so I suppose really it's a reaction to Guy Bourdain and not and interpretation of Madonna
Before judging, check: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appropriation_(art) As an art historian I don't really find the use of the Bourdin pics problematic. First of all, they recreated the scenes in a different medium, so that's a totally different story...
Eric, while I love your reactions... I have to ask: Are you watching these videos a 2nd/3rd time after your initial reaction? Your level of dissection of the imagery, outfits, meaning and messaging seem beyond the level of one time viewing, and listening. I’m not complaining as I love the extra things you find/talk about. But all those things from only one view? Talk to me
Thank you! As I watch the videos the first time, I make mental notes of the things that stood out. When I start giving my analysis, I scrub through the video to make sure I'm remembering images correctly. When I show some of the images on screen during my commentary, that's what I was looking at as a still after my initial viewing. I've heard all the songs before in the context of their respective albums, so I have a frame of reference before I watch the videos. So all of this is what I'm thinking of in the moment, but sometimes I do sit there for a minute to stare at the screen before I start talking. :)
Now that I've listened to more than half of Madonna's albums, which of her music videos should I check out next? :)
Please react to Drowned World / Substitute for Love, Nothing Really Matters and Justify My Love!
Girl Gone Wild and Ghosttown, please.
Phenomenal and deep analysis as always, Eric.
Thanks for that 🤗
Vogue + Deeper and Deeper + Nothing Really Matters.
Great House Music videos. ❤
Nothing Really Matters, Hung Up, and Justify My Love

You should react to Burning Up, Like a Virgin, and Erotica......in that order.
Great reaction! (Btw, You should never shave again, hahaha)
Please do Fever, Open Your Heart or Erotica next!
Add captions, pls. 👍
I’ll try to do that soon! TH-cam unfortunately removed captions on videos with music.
Captions are up! Thank you for your patience. :)
@@ericmason6540 WOW! Tks a lot! 🥰

Really enjoyed this! Don't take this wrong but: you remind me of Ivanka Trump. PS: corn rows don't belong to anyone.
Please react to Madison Beers album life support
Please react to Salt n PePa
