The good thing is that they’re branching out into other games types. Like how they made the card game and TFT, and I know there’s a fighting game coming out and I believe a platformer(story game?)?
These first 3 episodes really took me by surprise, probably because I had no expectations going in. But I really loved that final sequence in episode 3. The voice acting was phenomenal too
Between Arcane, Dota: Dragon's Blood, and Castlevania, Netflix is realizing that people will go head over heels for solid storytelling based on popular game franchises, and I am all for it.
I think one of the best parts of the animation is how realistic the movements and facial animations are without falling into the uncanny valley. I tend to get that uncomfortable feeling when 3d animation tries to be too smooth and realistic, but they executed it so well here.
Yeah when I heard about a TV show adapted from LoL I weirdly imagined a fight between Garen and Yasuo... They avoided the easy fan-service that's for sure! In my opinion having Jayce and Viktor, even if it's logical given the setting, was already an original choice.
While watching Arcane I felt the same as when I watched Spiderverse, like this is something that breaks the game by a lot (talking about animated series in this case, not movies). They translated the art style of their game's splash arts into an animated series and it's so freaking awesome how they made it look so good and smooth. We are used to top-level animations coming from Riot but this was way better than I could ever expect. I have seen the scene when Powder grabs the sandwich during the heist like 20 times, it's super dope how they interact with objects that at first sight you would think are only a hand-drawn background.
Fortiche prod is the studio that did the "jinx" music video and the "champions" promo trailer with the imagine dragons song - they have showed some chops - but it's true that cool flashy animations isn't the guarantee that the studio will deliver when it comes to heavy emotional moments, so props to them for delivering here!
I love that it stands on it's own, but there's so much that people miss - it's one of those shows where the more you know about the lore the better it gets. It's absolutely nuts! It almost feels like a waste sometimes😅 cuz as a lore fan you wish it could impact others in the same way
I think the opposite. I regret knowing their lore after watching this because everyone who is a league player already expected how the characters would turn out, but luckily we weren't fed of HOW it turned out and it was amazing.
@@gravelor78 I enjoyed knowing what some of the characters would become. Seeing powder being adorable and just all around a lovely girl just made the knowledge of what she'll turn into so much more devastating.
Can't wait to get immersed in Runeterra lore through TH-camrs explaining it. It seems like a good setting, and I love the D&D supplement they made. That, along with this new show, is making me hyped for the MMO project.
But at the same time, people who have no idea about lore are highly benefitted! Spoilers below: The fact that none of them know what Viktor becomes especially in League and the way he looks and uses Hextech will be more challenged and surprised by whatever decisions he makes in the future in his partnership with Jayce. While some people who don't know League have been pondering if Viktor is using Jayce, I think many of them are hoping for good things.
Honestly, the show exceeds all expectations. I never believed in MY LIFE that I would rate something 10/10!!! But it deserves it SO MUCH! - Worldbuilding = Excellent - Characters = Amazing! - Plot = Gimme 🙏
lmao. good thing they started retconning and changing lore. rmmber in the early days of the lore? Blitzcrank had a dating service and Sivir was arrested for drunk driving
@@JacobODell_ it won't happen, the way the industry is structured now. Arcane was tremendously expensive and complex to make, and was only possible because of Riot's bottomless pockets
I would say its easily the best game adaptions so far. Nothing is even close. And not only that, it comes close to being a Top 10 TV series over all, not just game adaptions, and not just animated. At least for me. Lets hope they stick the landing.
What I like with Arcane are the character. Cliche ? Maybe, but every single one has personality. No empty sell, no plot slaves or stereotypes for the sake of stereotypes
The more content I watch, the more I really really appreciate Daniel-sensei's reviews. Articulate, open-minded, and entertaining. I recently read another review of Arcane that was very lackluster--not just in its opinion, but also in the review's execution. Watching this video really made me thankful that I found a high-quality reviewer I can trust--even though my taste doesn't always align, I know Daniel-sensei will do the content justice. No pressure. I just wanted to say thank you.
I literally waited for this video since the first trailers, regardless the final quality haha Such an awesome show👌🏼 And I don't even care at all for LoL lol Also I loooove the trilogy-format they chose. 1-3 as part 1, 4-6 as part 2 and 7-9 as part 3, really awesome for storytelling-purposes
I think using those tropes were deliberate. Because show is builded for those episodes to be "acts". So they set them up to be "Oh no it will go this way" to then "oh...". I think it's kinda limiting and expected if they do it EVERY 3 episodes. But it was fun the first time
I was watching it with my brother, and as soon as powder enters scene and says “my monkey bomb finally worked”, he just hit pause and had to let it all sink in before what happened next.
TBSkyen put it well in his coverage of the first three episodes. About how the show Wields it’s tropes and cliches to fast-track the plot. The story has a breakneck pace because they could shortcut character moments and rely on character-driven animation to sell you on who the people onscreen are.
As a league fan already, I knew they would do a good job with the show going in, but I was still blown away at the polish and care that went into everything here. It really shows that video game based movies or TV shows can be as good as any others when you don't make them cheap cash grabs.
Now that the next three episodes are out I think it's safe to say thia team is nailing their artistic integrity with consistency. Which is great, because I can't stop myself from playing these episodes in repeat. The art portrayal is so mesmerizing, there's nothing like it that I'm aware of and I can't get enough of watching the scenes. On top of that the story is being fantastically told with such a varied cast that there's guaranteed a character for everybody to root for. There's absolutely rewarding tidbits for those into the Lol lore, too, which I enjoyed as I casually played the game. I find myself resonating so much with Viktor, which is stellar because his character bio is hands-down my favorite and seeing his origin is a dream. I hope to see more works done like this.
I've played League of Legends for many years now and still play it with my friends to stay in touch since we're all in different states and it's about the only game my computer can run xD. It's so great seeing people that aren't playing LoL actually be interested in the characters and happy with the show. I hope the same thing happens with the live action One Piece show!
The whole way they've done the marketing for this show (release strategy, cross promotion across all their games + collabs etc) could be made into a case study as well, so far it feels like they're doing everything right with this show.
I'm not sure about that. As someone that doesn't play or follow the game in any way at all, I heard and knew nothing about it until this video. And now having watched it, I can safely say there are millions more people out there like me that would love it. Hopefully all the good reviews will lead them to it.
It's amazing how they pulled off this show knowing full well there were two types of audience : Those who already know who the characters are or are going to become and those who didn't and still manage to appease the two factions. It was obvious from the start powder was Jinx for me, who's a long time LoL player and Jynx lover, but that didn't detract from the story. It worked for me the same way The Social Network did. You know how it ends (sort of), but you're still pulled in for the ride. And Oh my God, what a ride! That scene of Powder coming to say she helped, broke my heart.
Crazy that you didnt even talk about Jayce, Viktor and Heimerdinger. All of them are fantastic, and the simaltanious use of the Magic stones, one for good, one for bad, is so well executed.
Expanding on that, it's the seemingly oppressive upper class that is attempting to solve the world's problems with Hextech. The lower class is using it to destroy.

I think now it’s New World The hype ;) As a non player the show is still entertaining and enjoyable. Great characters and storytelling. And amazing animation and art work. Quite excited for the next 3 episodes.
I don't necessarily advocate for a ton of violence everywhere, but boy oh boy, did they use it effectively. Having played the games, it hits extra hard from knowing where the characters are going to end up from the very beginning.
I went into this show completely blind I heard of League of Legends of course but I literally knew nothing about it and this series really demonstrates how you can relate to fictional characters even though you had a very different experience in life for me I was surprised how much I related to powder even though I was the older sibling my brother usually got all the respect from peers as he had the speed and strength and I saw myself in Powder you could literally feel the hate and resentment coming from her voice
Fun Fact: SPOILER THOUGH The main promotional image for this show was a shot of Powders face with VI’s arm around it, protecting her. The final shot of episode 3 revealed that it was not VI’s arm, but Silco’s instead. The marketing used so much misdirection that the music video they made created fake scenes of the show as to not spoil anything.

I just watched the first 3 episodes and I am completely and utterly BLOWN AWAY!!!! I am a big fan of Anime and I’m very picky on what I watch. I don’t know what this is categorized as. But honestly it’s the best show I have seen so far on Netflix and it’s only the first 3 episodes. MAGNIFICENT!!!! If you pass this show up you definitely are missing out!!!!
Time for me to give my take on the ending with little Jinx and Vi. Watching Powder cry out to her only and last living support, Vi, and lose everything made my heart break. It reminded me of being that (assumed) age and feeling completely lost when my parents split up. I remember the feelings so vividly and how I wanted to feel loved and cared for so badly. Damn. What a good fucking scene.
I have re-watched this series many times now. It's rather insane how well crafted it is and how compelling the wants, desires, struggles, etc... of everyone involved is. I hope this is a very strong first step for the League of Legends cinematic universe. If it is to the quality of this series as been thus far, I am 110% on board.
We just need this to continue to do well so that we get a second season and we get introduced to characters like Camille and Jhin… Like please, just give us a Jhin crime investigation or something similar 🙏
Didn't expect you to do this review. Though i am new to your channel, OP got me started love those reviews too. Didn't have high hopes for the league show even as a league player. But they clearly shattered them. Glad you enjoyed it and cheers to more LOL netflix shows.
In a time when I'm being consistently let down and disappointed by bad writing in movies and TV shows, Arcane is a drink of water for my parched throat. It feels SO GOOD to find a show that's written this well! And I'm blown away by the animation and the art direction.
I’m not a big fan of League the game, but was curious to check this out after seeing all the reviews. I definitely appreciate that I don’t need to know any lore or info from the games in order to enjoy the show.
was hoping you would cover this. seeing my favorite booktuber gush about the game I've played forever feels like a wacky crossover episode. thanks mr fantasy news man.
As someone who has trouble watching any shows now, Arcane was a breath of fresh air. The last fifteen-ish minutes of the third episode made my jaw drop; it was a mixture of awe and "Oh, they went there" that shocked me to my core. It's genuinely made me a fan here and I cannot *wait* for the next episodes. Also, Vander's last stand on the platform was BRUTAL. It was like an old ultra-violent 80s anime brought to life.
I just watched the show yesterday, and was blown away by it, so it was super gratifying to come onto TH-cam this morning to see such a positive review from one of my favourite TH-camrs.
Great video! Would have appreciated if you only used footage from 1-3 though as some people don't want to watch all that footage of upcoming episodes. (Trailers nowadays show waay too much)
The lore of Runeterra is absolutely insane and this is just the tip of the iceberg, Piltover and Zaun are just one piece of this massive world. I would recomend to anyone intrigued by this world to watch some of Necrit's videos, he's the lore guy and has deep dives for basically every character and location in the world including Piltover and Zaun. If you want to see just how dark Zaun can go I would recommend watching his Singed videos.
My husband and I watched episode 1 last night after your review and he kept saying "It is a DnD session". We had to laugh at one point when there was a conversation which are almost certain that we had in a DnD session but I don't consider that an issue. We will be watching the next episode tonight and I'm really looking forward to it
I was overwhelmingly surprised by the awesomeness! I was hooked after the first 20-30 seconds of the opening bridge scene. Totally not what expected, can't wait for the next drop. p.s. I would love to see the Mistborn series realized in this animation style rather than live action. This animation style fits my head cannon perfectly for Mistborn, just me maybe, but the stylized steam punk arcane industrial revolution setting just rang my bell!
So, about Vander. I doubt that this will come up in the series, but it's very likely that he is a character in League and didn't actually die. There's a lot of stuff in the episodes hinting at that. I don't believe it will be actually shown in the series because the lore that we know about the character that is suspected to be Vander wouldn't fit in the course of the series until maybe, like, the end.
I love how the kids are portrayed that the ending just broke me to pieces. Powder wanted validation so badly she didn't consider her actions. She probably overloaded "that thing" out of sheer desperation for it to work, forgetting earlier events. And Vi remembering Vander's words in EP 1 when she looked at her hand... small things like that make it all the more poignant. Cliche, sure, but the delivery and execution are perfect. Great review! And thanks to this, I found your channel! Happy to be here and am looking forward to more of your content!
I never heard of the game before last week when I came across an article praising the show. I watched it and loved it and agree with most of what you said. Looking forward to the next 3 episodes in a couple of days. 😃
Thanks for doing the first part spoiler free, I play League of Legends and have seen a lot of League fans give it praise but to hear someone outside of League say it is so good makes me want to watch it for sure!
As someone who used to play League of Legends and who was a massive lore nerd I really loved how many "oh! so that's where it begins" or "that makes sense!!" moments there were. It's kinda cool to know how they (at least all the champion characters) are gonna end up and see where it all starts!
Most of the characters (the ones that are available champions in the game) already have set histories so those of us familiar with them already know where they're going so they didn't have a reason to hide it. This series is a hopeful long term setup to the MMO they're working on.
One aspect to this show that I've truly loved has been the amount of cameos... notes... calls? I don't know what to call them all, but so many characters are already being noted and setup from the LoL universe. I already freaking love setups (going all the way back to Iron Man when Tony is asked about the Avengers Initiative and seeing that pay off in 2012 Avengers) and having so many characters be put into this cinematic rollercoaster... it's just sooooo satisfying to me.
So, we don't know a lot about Jinx or Vi's past from the lore. They always withheld their details, so we didn't know much of their past before now. We didn't even know they were sisters for sure until the series started. And based on what we know from the lore is coming up, we're in for some spicy shit. We've always known that VI and Jinx's story got dark, but never how or why. and now we know how and why
Bro I went in hoping it was gonna be good, expecting it to be terrible. It was goddamn amazing. People have said for ages for RIOT to make a movie or a show, but... I never expected they'd execute on such a level.
Wasn't going to we watch the show until I saw this and now I Can't wait for your full review. you had some really good points here that enhanced my viewing experience and the third and final Act is amazing
Runterra was always so fascinating to me for a MMOBA game it has no business being this good and deep, i stopped playing league of legends around 4 years ago but i still follow the lore updates and anything lore related they release, they also released a card game filled with the already established lore but building more on it, it's honestly FANTASTIC!
I am a player since 2010, haven't played much these last 2 years but am still an avid reader of the lore, and to me... this is a legacy. We all dream of seeing that comic, book, game, or whatever that we love with a passion adapted to a "movie" in all its glory, and most times it doesn't really go like we want. Some are good, most are bad... but this one... OH GOD THIS ONE, sincerely I had expectations, but being a jagged adult I was ready for at least some hiccups, but when I ended the third episode, I felt... I felt vindicated, this is exactly what I wanted, and I bet any fans want, a story so well told that it creates an emotional need for more. It is just the first episodes but as Daniel said, generally at this point we would already have some hints that things may not go well but Arcane has planted a deep seeded confidence in me, that this series will deliver so much more than we first thought.

The way they are portraying Powders/Jinx's breakdown over the series is the best part, those scenes hit me hard everytime.
If the lore is as great as you say, then I'm glad I went in blind. I loved being surprised by this show.
Spoilers below:
The fact that none of them know what Viktor becomes especially in League and the way he looks and uses Hextech will be more challenged and surprised by whatever decisions he makes in the future in his partnership with Jayce. While some people who don't know League have been pondering if Viktor is using Jayce, I think many of them are hoping for good things.
Honestly, the show exceeds all expectations. I never believed in MY LIFE that I would rate something 10/10!!! But it deserves it SO MUCH!
- Worldbuilding = Excellent
- Characters = Amazing!
- Plot = Gimme 🙏
Riots lore writers are just built different.
You should look up on the lore and world building, you will be surprised.
Piltover and Zaun are just mere cities in the world of Runeterra.
Also hoping the 2nd Ionian Invasion will get a series sometime too.
@@johnd3421 yeah
Like the things you can do with Demacia,Noxus Shurima and the others too is just absurd.
lmao. good thing they started retconning and changing lore. rmmber in the early days of the lore? Blitzcrank had a dating service and Sivir was arrested for drunk driving
@@badterry that would make a great comedy show

Came here to comment that
They should just do the whole cosmere like this
@@JacobODell_ it won't happen, the way the industry is structured now. Arcane was tremendously expensive and complex to make, and was only possible because of Riot's bottomless pockets
i thought you were never going to review this show, since you didn't cover it on any of the fantasy news. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Seriously loved this show so far! The story was surprising and beautiful at every turn.
3rd episode made me cry. There’s nothing sadder than seeing a child lose everybody.
One of the best video game adaptations of all time easily. Low bar, but still.
I would say its easily the best game adaptions so far. Nothing is even close. And not only that, it comes close to being a Top 10 TV series over all, not just game adaptions, and not just animated. At least for me. Lets hope they stick the landing.
I haven’t sat without breathing to then got to hysterically sobbing whilst watching a show for a LONG time. But god damn that ending!
What I like with Arcane are the character.
Cliche ? Maybe, but every single one has personality. No empty sell, no plot slaves or stereotypes for the sake of stereotypes
I was sceptical at the beginning but was completely blown away by it. Such a beautiful animation! So glad you decided to do a review of it.
Just finished eps 7-9, duuuuuude can't wait for your review
It'd be awesome if they did "Stormlight Archive" in this style of animation.
I literally waited for this video since the first trailers, regardless the final quality haha
Such an awesome show👌🏼 And I don't even care at all for LoL lol
Also I loooove the trilogy-format they chose. 1-3 as part 1, 4-6 as part 2 and 7-9 as part 3, really awesome for storytelling-purposes
The portrayal of Jynxs mental instability is so freaking heartbreaking The way she copes with trauma is so horrific but handled beautifully.
I think using those tropes were deliberate. Because show is builded for those episodes to be "acts". So they set them up to be "Oh no it will go this way" to then "oh...".
I think it's kinda limiting and expected if they do it EVERY 3 episodes. But it was fun the first time
I think Silco legitimately sympathizes with Powder; his eyes just looked so kind when she hugged him
The begging. Yup. That was what hit me. That felt extremely real to me in that situation.
I was watching it with my brother, and as soon as powder enters scene and says “my monkey bomb finally worked”, he just hit pause and had to let it all sink in before what happened next.
It’s funny, I’ve already watched Arcane, but I’m about convinced to re-watch it now. 😂
It really was SO exceptional.
TBSkyen put it well in his coverage of the first three episodes. About how the show Wields it’s tropes and cliches to fast-track the plot. The story has a breakneck pace because they could shortcut character moments and rely on character-driven animation to sell you on who the people onscreen are.
Huge props to the voice actors. Vi and Powders breakdowns were just gut wrenching to both watch and listen too.
But they killed Chrisjen Avasarala. I NEED my foul mouthed General Secretary.
I’m so happy you gave this a shot, as a league player for years I’m so happy this wasn’t a flop.
It's what the show deserves as it's the first full length animation series they've made.
Noticed that as well, rather it was hard to miss. Their marketing was on point!
As a long time League lore fan I was so nervous for this and I'm so happy it's better than I ever could hope
Stormlight + Arcane art style = Perfection
Can we talk about Silco for a second? My guy gives off major Glokta vibes and I'm here for it!
Jinx has been my favourite champion for soooo many years and getting her backstory in an animated series that is this good is just a dream come true
This was the best show I have seen in years. One thing you didn't mention was the amazing sound track and sound design.

Fun fact: this little taste that you had is just the tip of the iceberg because league of legends have A LOT of great LORE that i SUPER recomend you to read is really awesome.
Went into this show knowing nothing about it and no expectations and was completely blown away by how good it is. The animation, the acting, the world, the soundtrack, absolutely amazing and can’t wait to see the last 3 episodes
I think we need more spoiler reviews from you! I love consuming some content then seeing your full opinion, it gives great perspective.
I loved the first 3 episodes and I knew about League of legends because my stepson have kept on playing with it for years. I think now it’s New World The hype ;)
As a non player the show is still entertaining and enjoyable.
"My name is Victor" -> :O
SPOILER:
Powder's voice breaking up when she calls after Vi end of episode three. Man that got me.
The world seems straight up that of Alita..having said that, I don't see it as a negative. This show is so freakin' cool and stupendously executed.
I went into this show completely blind I heard of League of Legends of course but I literally knew nothing about it and this series really demonstrates how you can relate to fictional characters even though you had a very different experience in life for me I was surprised how much I related to powder even though I was the older sibling my brother usually got all the respect from peers as he had the speed and strength and I saw myself in Powder you could literally feel the hate and resentment coming from her voice
this weekly 3 episode movie-length release is so perfect for this show. can't wait for act 2.
Fun Fact: SPOILER THOUGH
The main promotional image for this show was a shot of Powders face with VI’s arm around it, protecting her. The final shot of episode 3 revealed that it was not VI’s arm, but Silco’s instead.
The marketing used so much misdirection that the music video they made created fake scenes of the show as to not spoil anything.
I have an updated list of Anime to watch,
1. (Mob psycho 100%)exaggerated facial expressions add absurdity to a heartfelt coming-of-age supernatural story.
2. (86: Eighty Six )deals a drone War in a futuristic Setting … Beautiful action scenes will cry.
3. (Kings ranking) its new Three episodes in I would kill for most characters not a single character is throwaway.
Glad you liked it too.
The animation was phenomenal, like that bit where vi is pointing up and down her face was so funny.
That ending was so good.
I just finished it, and as someone who has never even touched League of Legends, this was a PHENOMINAL start that got me hooked. Seriously looking forward to what's coming up next, and I agree that the three-episode starter needs to become a more common thing.
I've played LoL since closed beta and I've consumed the lore ever since - my god we've come a long way.
I love this world and these characters. Even if I'm like "eh, I'll aram occasionally" when it comes to league of legends itself :P
(legit love the card game 'Legends of Runeterra' - it's the fairest monetization in the the genre and the cards keep expanding the world, lore and characters ^^)
Love your videos bub,
Stay safe and take care x
I run a movie club at my university.... even tho we dissect movies, we couldn't help talking about this show. I've played league for about 8 years and went into this with meh hopes. Blown away. Friends who never heard of the game it's one of their fav shows now.
My eyes were glued to the screen. My interest did not waver. It is Fantasy. Very artistic. Everything that I could want from a show. What a story.
I’m not a big fan of League the game, but was curious to check this out after seeing all the reviews. I definitely appreciate that I don’t need to know any lore or info from the games in order to enjoy the show.
Studio Fortiche really can't be given enough credit for their work on this visually. Arcane looks stunning.
was hoping you would cover this. seeing my favorite booktuber gush about the game I've played forever feels like a wacky crossover episode. thanks mr fantasy news man.
Cant wait for other regions to be fleshed out in the same fashion.
Demacia and Noxus are going to be nutty. Shurima and Targon slaps too.
I literally cried in my class when Powder was begging Vi ...also I think the reason why Silco didn't kill Powder was because he saw himself in her
Wow I couldn't figure out who "Zillcon" was for a bit. You must be watching it without subtitles I guess. It's "Silco"FYI.
@@davids182 thanks
You can really see the time and effort put into this show. I've been quite impressed, and I'm looking forward to more.
As someone who used to play League of Legends and who was a massive lore nerd I really loved how many "oh! so that's where it begins" or "that makes sense!!" moments there were. It's kinda cool to know how they (at least all the champion characters) are gonna end up and see where it all starts!
The fights and the feeling behind every punch is what hooked me.
The emotion they were able to pull out of Vi and Powder was amazing. Really excited for what is next.
Can't wait for the last act! The second one was also very solid. But that ending of the 3rd episode can't be topped.
There's a character in game, a fear demon of a sorts, that says something when it first meets Powder. "It's all your fault." And it says it in this most inhuman way. I now understand why it says that to Powder. I understand now.
or how about Swains quote to her: "Faces fading in the flames. It was all her Fault" And that was added to the game in like, 2015 i think!
