    Annie gives me similar vibes to Levi. Both appear to be apathic and kinda dead inside. Both are raised with violence programed into them and it becomes their first reaction to solve problems. Both have some sort of father-child relationships going on that impact their personalities greatly. Both are capable persons who carry whatever missions assigned to them and will not forget or give up on their end goals.
    But Levi has Erwin Smith as his commander while Annie is stuck with Reiner and his shitty leadership

    To me, the cold and lone wolf personality of Annie is just like her crystal: a form to protect herself from the blows of life. Annie is actually very kind, like Armin said, and not only that. I think she's pragmatic cause life push her to be in that way. When her emotions escape of that built armor, Annie goes into crisis. I genuinly think that Annie fell in love with Armin without realizing it, that's why she spared his life. And when she realizes that the Reiner's plan failed not only cause it was terrible but also for her feelings towards Armin, and that causes that she will never return with her father, she had a mental breakdown and break the character she created: she laughs to not crying.

    To me, Annie is what someone who wants to have zero emotion, and fails miserably.
    In the Survey Corps, she purposely makes herself hard to approach and distant, so that no one would like her. However, she couldn’t properly disassociate, as we saw with Marco.
    You can tell that she’s still someone who wants to be kind when she can. She saves Connie, cried for Marco, spared Armin in S1. In S4, she tries to fix her bond with Hitch, and when she asks Mikasa about Eren, she does defend herself, but makes it clear that she wants to end the conflict as quickly and peacefully as possible, with few casualties.
    There’s a lot more to Annie, but she’s definitely a really nice character to follow

    • @-Radical.Ed-

      She saved Jean too and she didn't have to do it. When she was boarding over the titan that was going directly to eat him up! Everyone says "she says she would do it again" yeah, she might. But, she was conflicted and cared a lot about the people she was supposed to kill. Marco (she cried) when she saw all the corpses (she said she was sorry with a destroyed expression), she saved Jean from.getting eaten, saved Armin, cried when she couldn't take Eren back because it would mean more carnage and the possibility of loosing he dysfunctional father figure which was the only thing she had.
      They give this woman so much hate for being "ruthless" yet they praise Mikasa for killing her former companions in the most sadistic way in the last season. The fandom is cancer.

    I love the way her relationship with her father is written. He abused her for her whole life, and offered only an apology, given at the eleventh hour. There's an intimate horror to this relationship; She's been shaped into a soldier by him, but she still loves him deeply. Not only because he's all she has and that abuse is all she's ever known, but also because she's *smart* and has probably come to understand their situation in some way. She understands the oppression that the Marleyan state is inflicting upon them. At least, as much as a 12-year-old is capable of understanding.
    To me, her character is about the profoundly-human need for connection with others, even in the most brutal of circumstances. It's also, in some ways, about the agency of violence. I wonder if her relationship with her father would have been as it was if she never became able to best him in a fight.

    An important moment for Annie's characterization that we see briefly is when the warrior candidates are young kids. Annie is seen deliberately stomping on a butterfly, which under normal conditions for children who go out of their way to harm or kill small animals, is a sign of sociopathy and psychopathy.
    But in the case of Annie, she's actually forcing herself to prepare mentally to see humans as bugs to be squashed underfoot.
    It's horrifically tragic when you think about it that a child would have to think this way, but she's extremely pragmatic and numbing herself for a short, violent life of utter brutality and death that she has to unleash upon her future enemies at the command of her Marleyan masters.
    Although she's never fully indoctrinated by Marleyan propaganda, this violent mental conditioning does take a toll since Annie has deep regrets upon seeing the mangled bodies of her Eldian comrades in the cadet corps following the Titan attack.

      TBH, I always assumed Annie WAS a psychopath, as it very much seemed that's what the show was hinting at. One of my most vivid memories of her assault on the Survey Corps expedition was her spinning a soldier in the air like a yo-yo. That sure seems to hint she's enjoying the carnage. Secondly, when she was revealed there's the famous scene of her breaking into hysterical laughter. Granted, there can be MANY explanations for this, but at first viewing... let's be honest you're thinking she's a nutcase. And then lastly, the scene you brought up yourself. When I saw the crushed insect I literally said to myself "Ah! There's her early mental illness coming through."
      To me, either Annie's character was rewritten at the end to make her more sympathetic in retrospect, or Isayama INTENTIONALLY made you assume she's a psycho/sociopath as a misdirection. Either way, it's pretty brilliant.

      @@thehackingburger3002 I think it was a bit of a misdirection on Isayama's part. We're led to believe she's a homicidal psycho even back then but she's actually an extremely broken child soldier forced to inflict violence in the name of both her adoptive father and her country. If she was a true psychopath, she wouldn't have expressed regret or empathy for her fallen comrades, nor would she try so very hard to get back to her (once) abusive foster father.

    It's so frustrating to see so many people restricting Annie's character to "the cold-blooded psychopath that savagely killed hundreds of scouts" because that doesn't even scratch the surface of how complex she really is. If Marco's death scene and the Lost Girls OVA proved anything, it's that in no way does she enjoy murder and 100% does NOT want to be doing the things she's being forced to do. She tried stopping the mission multiple times, and ever since season 1, her mindset has been "I want to get things over with so I can return to my father" who, by the way, has been nothing but cruel to her until too late, yet she still craves fatherly love--proving that despite her seemingly cold demeanor, she's not heartless at all. What's also aggravating is that she gets more hate than Reiner and Bertholdt, despite the two of them having committed far worse crimes than she has (I think the hate is rooted in misogyny + how she doesn't sugarcoat things + people's tendency to bring her down to lift up Mikasa, but that's a whole other conversation lol).

    I think you're spot on with Annie. She's my favorite character, and this video does her justice. I do; however, think Bertholdt is still rather misunderstood. I think, of the three of them, Bertholdt was the most "human." He was a prime soldier with exceptional skill, but he found himself latching onto his comrades as if they were family, which was a strength of his, but when he trusted the counsel of Zeke and Reiner too much, it got him killed. I think, if Reiner and Zeke hadn't have encouraged him to submerge his emotions and convince him that the Paradise soldiers were bluffing about Annie, then Bertholdt would have probably tried negotiating with Armin once Armin approached him. Bertholdt was sharp/intelligent, which was under-appreciated.
    Status didn't mean much to Bertholdt as shown by him being the only one to help Reiner during their training in Marley. We don't know too much about his backstory/family, but we can speculate some things. The Hoover bloodline ended after his father passed away in the final season, which was a "blink and you miss it" moment. We could assume that Bertholdt became attached to Reiner and Annie due to his perishing bloodline, so he needed to establish a new one, which is why he tried to mediate the two. We know he had strong ties to his original family, because in the Manga he cried when leaving Marley.
    I think you can tell a lot about someone based on their interests, and Annie was an interest in Bertholdt's eyes. I believe that Bertholdt saw an impossible future with Annie and felt hopeless to his circumstances, due to his family dying. The instability of his life probably caused him to empathize with Annie's emotions. I'd guess this is why he never made executive decisions, because he didn't want to be responsible for their deaths, and he didn't want to lose Annie/Reiner. Ironically, his follower-mentality was the only sense of control he'd felt.
    After a while, the soldiers of Paradise became a part of the family he was losing. He lost his biological family, and his family from Paradise due to the Marlian war. The only option he had was to numb his emotions and project a demeaner likened to Annie's, which is fueled by apathy and obedience. Remember, Bertholdt and Annie cried when they left Marco to that titan.
    As I said, I believe Bertholdt is deeply misunderstood.

    • @AvalancheZ250
      @AvalancheZ250 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. My favourite characters in this story are a bit of a strange mix. They are Armin, Annie and Bertholdt. All of them, including contrary to common belief for the latter two, were sensitive people who thought deeply.
      Bertholdt's bonds with the friends he formed was too strong, so his coping mechanism was detachment through self-sacrifice of his agency. He let Reiner take over executive command, despite Bertholdt's superior talent at pretty much everything (as has been told to us in the story by other characters, as well as shown in action sequences), such that he wouldn't have to take as much guilt. Reiner absorbed that guilt willingly as it was part of his own coping mechanism for getting Marcel killed, but it broke him also, splitting his mind into Soldier Reiner and Warrior Reiner, a walking contradiction that hurt himself and everyone around him.
      Annie knew she liked giving and receiving kindness, so acting pragmatically she adopted a cold exterior to minimise connections that could lead to the kindness that would be her Achilles Heel. She failed, especially in regards to Armin, which is why her cover was blown and her main goal (returning to her father) was put in jeopardy.
      Armin is similar to Berthold and Annie in that he's a kind soul. The biggest difference, ironically, was pre-timeskip Armin's psychopathic behaviour when under stress, in which he was completely able to disregard his humanity and become a monster to achieve his goals. That was something that Bertholdt and Annie could not do, which is why they were both defeated. If Bertholdt hadn't cared about Reiner or wasted time talking to Armin in Shinganshina, he would have nuked way earlier and killed Armin, Mikasa, Jean, Connie, Sasha and Hange. If Annie hadn't spared Armin, her cover wouldn't have been blown. But Armin didn't pull any punches in Stohess and got Annie captured, and got under Bertholdt's skin with false threats of torturing Annie that got Eren back from Reiner and Bertholdt.
      What was interesting is that this "all or nothing" Armin disappeared after the timeskip, in which he became a lot more like Annie and Bertholdt. Without the idealism that he was "fighting for humanity" now that the enemy was other others, a fact Annie and Bertholdt always had to face, Armin's resolve could never reach what it was before the timeskip. This made him a lot more sympathetic to the other two, which we see frequently in his monologues in Season 4 ("is this the sight you saw, Bertholdt?", "we killed countless, but we had no choice, just like you were back then, Annie".

    One thing that I noticed in S4 is that after Annie is released and reunited with everyone else when it comes to the topic of Eren with Mikasa she is the only one who will outright say "Could you kill Eren?" or "Would you be able to Kill Eren?" and even though other characters have brought it up its Annie who will primarily focus it when it comes directly to Mikasa mulitple times and I think its because Annie knows the situation Mikasa is in because she's been through almost the exact one.
    So we all know that Annie likes Armin even in S1 and it was her failure to kill the man she loved the ended up costing her mission. And Annie knows that is Mikasa is unable to kill the man she loves like how she did the consequences will be a thousand times worse.

      And in the final episode, everyone sympathizes with Mikasa, saying that they are very sorry to kill Eren. What is Annie doing? She knows that consolation is useless and distracts her with thoughts of saving Armin.

    I think the problem with Annie character is you meet it her season 1 and she disappear form the story by season 2, with only know little on her. We again see her only at second part of season 4 and getting her story, by then we totally forget about her, which cause "The Biggest Misconception". I didn't like the decision ditch her for so long, without revel her story or motive, while I can understand why the writer didn't choose then to reveal her story, still I think the writer needed to think on other way to keep Annie alive. Tbh it isn't even like that, Annie keeps having big importance and appearing in flashbacks that makes us learn more about her in season 2 and same in season 3 part 2, and even if she wasn't like that in part 1 that's why we got her OVAs, two canon special episodes completely dedicated to her, there you get to understand her more, to know how she is and more about her past, they have always made her be present in the story even if she couldn't be as much as others (for example, Annie has been in almost as many episodes than Bertholdt and Historia, who were there all the time for three and four seasons, she has been only in 7 episodes less than Erwin and she has been in way more many episodes than Ymir). Having her present in season 4 part 1 to make her be out of the crystal in part 2 in the only situation that could happen in a coherent way it's fine, yes, it's not being as much as other or in the same way but it's okay for the particular situation her character is in and it's just not as if she would have been just in season 1 and barely ever heard of her again till s4p2 having just like 15 episodes before come back or something, the story didn't that with her.

    • @Alonkis251
      @Alonkis251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jrlombardi5251 First, you can show all Annie flashback and other kinds of appearance while she outside the crystal
      Second, there 2 ova which expand Annie character, great but why you need this two ova? right due the fact you "Killed" Annie...
      Third, well I eventually acknowledge Isayama couldn't do otherwise.

    • @jrlombardi5251
      @jrlombardi5251 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alonkis251 first, why would you need flashbacks when she's literally there? Those are just two different ways to have the character present, you don't need one if you have the other and both do the same in the story.
      Second, having OVAs to learn more about a character isn't something they needed and only did bc they "killed" her, they did the same with Levi and Mikasa even when they were always there, it's just a way to show more about the characters, not a last choice resource bc you can't show the character in the show (thing they were doing with what I already explained).

No one REALLY wants to do awful things and they'll find any excuse to hide from their shame which is what "I was just doing my job" or the othering effect of propaganda are for. Breaking down anyone's morals isn't impossible, because as rational creatures, we can be reasoned with... which is the greatest double edge sword in existence. That while the other characters were fighting, she was resting, forgetting that this is essentially a grave from which you can't get out on your own, see something, or even lift a finger. And inside you are thoughts, ideas, and not rosy ones. They eat you, they eat your brain, your mind, leaving no chance for anything. They're doing a live action Attack on Titan that's coming out in 2025 and it's finally being made in the United States with actors that look like the characters in the show!!! They said they're gonna remain completely faithful to the source material! I'm wicked excited! The director and the two writers that are working on the film are huge fans too that have been shopping it around hollywood for like 5 years!
    Edit: Actually, the studio is having them make some concessions, but it looks like it's just a few things that won't impact the story AT ALL.
    Edit: Ok. They're making Mikasa's character transgender. But, she's gonna be exactly the same and she's gonna be played by a female actor and they're never mentioning her being assigned male at birth at all during the film so you'd never know except that in the first part of the movie her younger self is played by a boy so you just have to kinda figure it out.
    Edit: Apparently Armin is gonna be a girl now which is kinda weird but it really doesn't affect the way the story plays out anyway except that he still falls in love with Annie's character, but they're fixing that by replacing Annie with Onyankopon's character. So instead of him being part of the later volunteer corps from the other countries, he's now an Eldian in the Warrior program and still plays as the female titan. It's kinda confusing but they had to do that to make their later romance work because they made Armin into a female character from Onyankopon's country.
    Edit: I almost forgot to mention this part which is really silly because it's such a big change, but they made Mikasa the main character kind of because they made Eren a titan shifter form Onyankopon's country and they decided that you don't need to be an Eldian to be a titan shifter because it would honestly limit that ability for people of color to become titan shifters which I fully support. It wasn't really fair, and was honestly kind of racist, to make it so that only Eldians could be titans. So, Eren comes in later on but he makes a huge entrance by coming out of nowhere basically alegedly to start the rubling when you meet him. That's all I know though.
    There's some changes but I honestly think a lot of them were necessary because of the lack of diversity present in the show. So I'm still really excited. I haven't read the comic books or the show that the comics are based on yet but I know some people that absolutely love them so based on their enthusiasm alone I'd say I'm thrilled to see it when it comes out.
    I mean, I probably won't even see the movie, but I'll make sure to demand all the changes they're making with my twitter account to make sure they follow through on their promises. Wow. So excited.
