    This video was incredibly informative thank you for putting in the time to make it. I’ve been having problems with my thermal expansion between clay and glaze and I think now it’s down to the bisque firing temperature. Time to try out my theory 🤞

    Talk about timing! I was literally asking this question in my clay supplier TODAY! I never work with earthenware but I have a project that requires it. I noticed the recommendation on their earthenware clay was to bisque to 04 and glaze to 06. Coming form stoneware this made no sense to me. No one in the store had an answer. Thank you!!!

      Wow! No one in the store?!?! So glad I could help. My grandmother was a master earthenware artist. I am so grateful for that. You’re welcome of course and I thank you for watching!

    Perfect video! I fired my first kiln for the first time this week. I think I started and stopped the kiln 2-3 times, as I forgot to place the witness cones in and later wanted to take photos of each shelf. Wish I had watched your video first! But I loved your explanation about when to use 04 and when 06. I brush glazes on, so am happy that I accidentally fired to cone 04. WHEW! I now have a checklist that I will place by the kiln shelf! Thanks!!

      Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy your new kiln and studio as much as I do. Just fyi Commercial glazes are formulated to go on either 06 or 04 with ample open time. If you make your own those are like trying to paint chalk on to 06 and are better at 04. Since this video I have also experimented with 08 and single fire 🔥 😲🤪 it’s a super fun journey welcome to the club ☺️

    Thank you for explaining this is a way I can comprehend! I have trawled the internet to try and understand about 04 and 06 bisque firing and what should be used and when and on what type of clay. I have just started using earthenware after only using stoneware and if I can have a mixed firing that would be so helpful! I have a firing on at the moment bisquing stoneware and glazing (some sacrificial) earthenware. I had no idea what I was doing really. It will be interesting to see what happens! If only the darn kiln would cool down quicker!!!
    I only use brush on glazes so am comforted when you say the higher temp bisque (which is all I have tended to use) is best for that - and might explain why I had such a torrid time using a dip glaze for the first (and only) time - which was disastrous 😮 Thanks for all your videos. I love em!

    Thank you so much for all you do!! I was having a terrible time loading my kiln so I got some big pieces of cardboard and traced my kiln shelves onto them. I did a full shelf as well as a half shelf for both kilns. I have to say though that I have only done the layout once!! Hahaha. The last time I loaded my glaze load in my big kiln it took 3 1/2 hours!!! I am having to stagger my shelves to get more even heat and it’s soo hard to do, and incredibly time consuming!!
    I used to have a mobile paint your own pottery business and I usually did plates because they are of course like a blank canvas and people could do so many different things with them. When I bisque fired them I could stack 3 high and never had any problems. The issue with staggering plates, as you did with your coasters is that they will warp, especially anything handbuilt.
    I had several bisque loads that didn’t get hot enough and only got to cone 06 and I had a ton of pin-holing with several different glazes. So I just bisque to 04.

      great to hear! I forgot to show it in the video, but as you’re putting your ware in, it can be hard to remember where your stilts are as you unload the layout. So I put some tiny shelf supports on the layout as a reference in place of the ones I will use when I move those into the kiln. Then, as I load from the layout to the kiln I always have those layout references. I totally hear you on the backbreaking loads. This process was born from the chiropractor’s bill afterthe 3 1/2 hour loadings. 🥴🤪. as you learn your kiln the staggering won’t be as hard. you can do it!

      @@CallUsTemily Thanks so much. I actually put my kiln posts in the exact same place every time so I drew them onto the cardboard!! Now to remember to do the layout!! Lol. I do have to wrap each piece in a plastic bag once the glaze is dry and I put them into boxes by height so I know how many pieces I have for each shelf.

    I am new and so confused. I am making a porcelain doll. I was told to bisque fire it. if I do cone 06 can i still sand off seams and detail it after the bisque firing?

    • @CallUsTemily
      @CallUsTemily  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can sand off seams with a green scrubby at the bone dry stage. Like the kind that come attached to sponges to wash dishes and bathtubs. It’s way easier to do that at greenware. I’m not sure why anyone would encourage you to send scenes after the Greenware stage. Maybe someone misunderstood what you were asking.
      However, as for would the clay, be soft enough to sand down at cone 06, it depends on your clay. If you have a mid or high fire clay (which porcelain will be) then it will be soft enough to still sand at the stage. It will be way harder to do, but it is possible. I would think you would have to do it with a Dremel or something like that in order to get the amount amount of pressure you would need and still preserve the details in the surrounding area.

    I have wondered about this because I don't always make enough things to fill the kiln. I don't want to wait until I have enough bisque things, or enough glazed things to fill up the kiln. So, I decided to try putting both glazed and unglazed things in together and firing at cone 06. I've been making a lot of figurines and little non-food oriented things, so I wasn't worried about it. 06 seemed to fire plenty hard enough.
    So, you say that cone 06 bisque absorbs glaze better. Is that a good thing? How does the glaze turn out, how does it look compared to the 04 bisque? Why would you rather bisque at 04 vs. 06. ? What are the differences?

    • @CallUsTemily

    • @DonaldDrennan
      @DonaldDrennan ปีที่แล้ว

      @CallUsTemily Yes, I watched the whole video, it just didn't answer all my questions. Also, I only use low fire slip, so I'm only interested in how glaze works on 04 bisque vs. 06 bisque. You talked about glaze absorption a bit, but could you go into more detail about glaze results and pros and cons? Does the glaze work better if the bisque absorbs more? Would that help with crawling and bare spots? I call them blowouts, but that's probably not correct.
      Another problem I've been having is with old glazes beading up like water droplets on glass, leaving most of the bisque bare. What causes this, and can the full jar of old glaze be salvaged somehow? It was a pretty, matte glaze that I'd like to use.
      I know that's a lot of questions. Thanks!

    • @CallUsTemily
      @CallUsTemily  ปีที่แล้ว

      @DonaldDrennan ok! With low fire clay you must reach cone 04 at some point. A lot of low fire glazes burn out at cone 04 so people bisque to 04 and glaze to 06. You cannot bisque to 06 and then glaze to 06 on functional ware. On sculpture 🤷🏻‍♀️. You can bisque to 06 or even lower -08, and then glaze to 04. But you must make it to 04 for anything functional.
      As for crawling, this is one of the hardest problems to diagnose. However, I have heard that a lower bisqued temperature will help with certain types of pinholing, which is minor crawling, but I don’t think what you’re describing is a bisque temperature problem. I would also like to suggest heading over to the @WashingtonStreetStudio channel. They have a ton of helpful videos with the type of content I think you’re looking for.
      As for salvaging the old glaze, one thing that can cause crawling, is too much clay content in a Glaze. If a Glaze is not stirred all the way to the bottom of the jar. Every time you get ready to use it the bottom of the jar will have too much clay. I don’t know if this is the issue but it’s just my guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also don’t know how to salvage it. 🥴
