Your videos are my go-to for great info! I am considering purchasing the same kiln, but am worried that my 17' platters won't fit. Can you tell me what is the largest you can fire in this kiln? Many thanks for answering and for providing so much helpful content!
Thank you Lori. The largest I can fit is 15 inches because I have the 3 inch bricks. It is more energy efficient. Even if you get the 2 and a half inch bricks you still won't have enough room. Too bad it's not a little wider because this is a great Kiln.

Thank you so much! I am going to load my greenware right now. I do have one question, can you use a whole shelf and half shelves in the same load? I can't figure out how I would put the posts. I only have one whole shelf and 4 half shelves, so I was hoping I could use them at the same time. Thanks again for your videos! So helpful!
Yes, you can use your half shelves also. Just place 3 like a triangle under each half shelf. I didn't think of showing how to place the half shelves. Sorry about that. 😊 hope this helps.
I have the same question. With 1 whole shelf and 4 half shelves. You mentioned place 3 supports but that would leave a part of the second shelf unsupported. Am I mistaken? What happens if one support isn’t over another? I have tried 4 supports. One top (looking down at the shelves) and one bottom then one on each side supporting each half. I know this sounds confusing…it’s hard to explain. I’m just concerned about ruining the shelves. Maybe it is a good idea to show this in your video. I sure could use the visual. Thank you 🤔😊
Thanx again! ✌🏻 The only question I’d like to ask you is how to put shelves stand over each other when using half shelves? I’ve only two big shelves and three half shelves with my kiln (same model as you have in this vid)… 🤷🏻♀️
When using half shelves, you would place a post on each end and one in the middle closest to the side of your kiln. I would recommend using the thinner posts to utilize your space. I use the one-inch wide posts instead of the 1and 5/8th inch posts. Here is the link for you to it check out geni.us/dk2OL 👍
Marie! I'm so excited. My 818-3 will finally get delivered tomorrow. We will be kiln twinsies :) I wondered, do you prop your lid for a little bit with the bisque fire, or just shut it, program it and be done with it? I've got 99 pieces (not counting lids) that I've got stacked up waiting for the magic to happen. I always appreciate your video's. You are a great teacher and I've referred back to a few of them more than once.
Congratulations kiln twin!!! WOW, 99 pieces how exciting. Yes, you should prop the lid. So happy I found your channel through this video! I am fairly new to pottery even though I’ve had my kiln a few years. I haven’t fired anything in a couple of years and needed a refresher on how to load my bisque fire. By the way, should I leave the top hole unplugged? I couldn’t remember! My kiln has 5 holes and the bottom 4 have plugs in them.
Wonderful! Yes keep the top peeper out throughout the firing. This helps the gases to escape and still keep the temperature. Any more questions feel free to ask. I also have this kiln Questions video that may help. Here is the link for you if you did not see it yet.

Lovely video, thanks. Again your kiln size is roughly 40x40cm?
Would you recommend getting this size for a home studio. What would you say is the widest piece, a bowl, that is safe to load into this kiln?
Yes 😊 around 40x44

Marie, you are a treasure. I have had my kiln for 6 months and have been too nervous to fire it! You give an excellent review for us beginners. I bought a slightly larger Skutt (about 5.7 sq. ft) as I expect to have larger pieces to fire. However for my first time, I don't have a lot of pieces to totally fill it but need to do both a bisque and glaze firing now as I have some tableware pieces to get to a buyer very soon. Are there any considerations to firing an underfilled kiln? Also how do you determine what bisque temp to fire between O6 and 04? I will be glazing at cone 6 as that is my clay vitrification but unsure about bisque.
Hi Mary Jane. That is great news. So happy to help. If you bisque fire to cone 06, your pottery will be more porous. I would recommend bisque firing to cone 04.
My friend has a larger kiln and fires half-full a lot with no problems.
I fire to cone 5 and put a 20-minute hold on at the end of the firing. This is equal to a cone 6 firing but the hold helps to cure the glaze, which helps prevent pin holes. It works great for me. Enjoy your New Kiln. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Unfortunately, only the bosses of the pottery studio get to load the wares. :-( I like how précised your bowls sizes and shapes were. Mine is one of its kind each! ;-) And also got a nice wonky bowl which I love it very much. Now just need to clean up the glaze after dipping. :-)

Hi Bob. That is a great question. Yes you can stack plain slip. You can NOT stack slip with any stains or colorants because it will transfer onto the piece it is touching. 😊

You are welcome Beatriz. That is a very good question. Since engobes are very similar to slips and underglazes, if you any colorants in the englobe you can NOT stack them. 😊
I see no mention of any witness cones used in this bisque firing....I am very new to ceramics.....just received m y Skutt kiln .....about to fire my first bisque load...
Do. I need witness cones...firing bisque to...04 plus 03 and 05 ?
What about the peep hole ...should I leave the top peep hole open...(I do have a Skutt kiln vent system installed)

Marie, I did a bisque firing last night. I forgot to plug ALL the peepholes. The kiln (818) was pretty full, had to stack the greenware, started it up and checked it in the morning. NONE of the peepholes were plugged. Am I screwed? It DID complete in 7h 37m.
Hi Michelle. It is fine because it was a bisque fire and not a glaze fire. The kiln is smaller, so it was able to reach the temperature.

So let's say im making porcelain mugs and they're ready to go in the kiln to bisque fire. What temperature would it be and how long?
Good question. You would bisque fire to cone 04 - 1945 ℉ (1063 ℃) Slow fire which takes around 12 hours to fire and another 12 to cool down. 😊

if you are not planning on glazing the pot, is it okay to put a unbisqued, bone dry piece directly into a glaze firing kiln? and is it safe with other pieces that do have glaze on them?
Hi Michelle. Good question. Yes, but you can only do that if you are low firing and the bone dry clay does not touch any glazed pieces.
@@PotteryCrafters Hi Marie, heres a follow up question: is the reason why you can only do this process in low firing because the high firing's temperature rises too fast and the unbisqued clay cant handle the level of heat that quickly? And if so, in theory could you double the amount of time it takes to climb up to the max temperature for medium/high fire clay bodies? ( lets say that there are no glazed pieces in particular kiln)
Hi Michelle. If I understand correctly the High fire temperatures rise at the same rate of speed. but If you put greenware in the higher glaze fire to be bisque fired and the glaze fire is a hotter temperature. The bisque ware will be fired too high and not porous enough to glaze properly.

Do you not need the witness cones?
That is a very good question. When I made the video I forgot about showing the cone. I use cones every third to fourth firing. The older your kiln is, the more often you should use cones. Some potters will use them every fire to be on the safe side. 😊
Hello, pls help me. When I stack my pottery for bisque, I notice the centre base of each item remains to be a different colour when stacked however the rest changes colour to pink. The centres remain lighter colour. Why could this be pls, thank you.
Hello, This is happening because of the type of clay you are using and when they are stacked the organic material my not be escaping properly. Did you notice a change in color once you glaze fired? If not and you want the bisque color to be the same would have to careful with stacking too much. Some potters I know don't stack at all. I stack my white clay because it fires cleaner. It contains less organic materials. 😊
Thank you so much for your reply. I am a new to pottery and self learning slowly. It was my first bisque fire. Although I didn’t stack too much tbh, it’s something I will be mindful of. Not glazed items yet, so let’s see what results I get. I really deeply appreciate your response, and I am learning so much from your videos. I may come back for more advise 😊

Great question Emerald. Yes, I use witness cones every 5 or six fires to make sure the kiln is firing properly. The older the kiln the more often it should be done. I should have pointed that out in the video. I will do that the next time I do a video with the kiln. 😍
