Have you ever flown the 717? They’re a rare find now in Europe, although Delta in the USA have a whole ton of them!

I am flying Volotea from Naples to Cagliari. Would have preferred EasyJet but they leave very late at night. I screwed up. I bought an a la carte ticket as I am not used to their system and should have bought the "package." On the package I could have gotten extra legroom and a drink! A la Carte I paid more !!!! I've flown two orphaned aircraft in the past that were a blast to fly, one was the Dornier 328 and second was the B 717. The cockpit looks small from the outside, however it is far more comfortable than the B 737. The instrumentation and panels are clean and easy to understand and actually are exactly the same as the MD-11(minus one engine). It's extremely quiet up front, so much so you must actually read your instruments to ensure the engines are running, it's that quiet. The only complaint I had flying it was that the wing was old technology aerodynamics and it just kind of gave up around 32 or 33,000 feet, so you were always dodging storms instead of flying over them. Great report, Paul.....Keep up the good work. Cheers!

The summer of 1984, from East Midlands to Split on a Yugotours Tupolev TU-134 as part of the package holiday to, what was then still, communist Yugoslavia. But they had a fledgling holiday industry. Yugoslavia was always a little less hardline than the other Warsaw Pact nations and was controlled less by the Soviet Union, so was happy to take the pound and the Deutschmark

I am thrilled to have been on your skyrocket ride of success from early on! I don't believe you need to utter a word about haters, though, because they're merely acknowledging the obvious change in your success. Change can be unsettling and scary, especially if it seems like the celebrity is changing. My humble advice is to stay grounded, remember from whence you've come and the self-portrait you've painted. Paul's life can get better, but Paul must never look down his nose at anyone as it does so...! Speaking of water transport - Toronto City Airport (Billy Bishop) is located on the Toronto islands in front of the downtown core. In the past, you would take a ferry across the narrow passageway. They eventually built a underground tunnel though that you walk under to reach the airport.

Hey Paul, quick question/suggestion - would you mind telling us what you get up to in these places? I know you've said in a Q&A before that you usually just fly in and make connections so often do not actually do a lot of exploring of the countries you land in - but if you are doing any exploring, it would be nice to know what you get up to! The reason I ask is that I'd quite like to get into some of these flights but I'd also like to know if there are any easy to access landmarks/tourist spots near the airports so I can see a little of the country as well. Appreciate you are a flight blog channel rather than a tourism channel but thought it was worth asking :) safe flying!

Used to fly on these all the time with Airtran (when they were brand new) in the USA before they were folded into Southwest. I liked them. Was nice not having a middle seat on the left, especially when traveling with my kids. Was in Venice last summer...was picked up by private boat at the train station to our Airbnb.

HA has their cabins pretty up to date. They've installed thinner seats to accommodate a few extra seats into the aircraft. The cabin is always clean and the new HA livery looks amazing on the 717!! Hands down HA has the best livery for the aircraft IMO....

Not the only airport in the world with a ferry service. Toronto's Billy Bishop airport (YTZ) offers a ferry from downtown Toronto to Toronto Island (where the airport is located). This is in addition, to the newly built underground tunnel which serves a similar purpose!

Top video 👍. To anyone thinking of going to Venice, I highly recommend taking a speedy water taxi from the Airport ( if you can afford it, it ain't cheap). It's a really comfortable and stylish way to travel and affords you much better views of the journey than what the Vaporetto/Alilaguana does.

Just a note, Volotea was founded by the founders of Vueling and even though it's now a participation of multiple investors, the company is registered as Spanish (you can see the planes have "EC" license and the on board labels are in English and Spanish)

I loved the light fixtures in the WC! Would like to get a pair of 'em. I've never seen those on a 717 (formerly MD 80 and DC 9, I believe) before. I flew the now defunct but wonderful PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines) in California for years which used the stretch (longer) version of this aircraft exclusively, and as was mentioned in this video, if you sit in or towards the front, it's virtually silent, a bit like being in a super-powered glider. Nice to see Paul flying something other than business or first class for a change, too. :)

Many thanks.

Excellent advice to the younger viewers on haters Paul, don't even waste your time going down to their level. basically the majority are very insecure, jealous under achievers, don't give them the satisfaction of engaging with them.
Anyway, back to yet another super video, I really was surprised to see that the 717 was still operating in parts of Europe I imagined they'd be long gone.

The 717 is just an MD machine anways (originally what was to be the MD-95, but then Boeing bought McDonnell-Douglas).

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

... and was the ONLY plane Boeing kept building after buying MD (they decided not to keep building their other plane at the time, the MD11) since they didn't had anything in that small of a size (and still won't have until Embraer's product enters the sales lineup).

As you said, Qantas operate a number of 717 aeroplanes and I've frequently enjoyed flying in them. They're comfortable, agile and relatively silent, the pilots seem to like flying them and I gather, the planes are very reliable. I'm sure Qantas would seek out any available 717s that come up for sale.

Oh, I like the phone booths in the lounge! What a great idea to give privacy to cell phone conversations! Haha - smiled at the plug-in instead of an actual phone. A gorgeous, colorful lounge. In fact, the entire airport looks like a work of art, really.
Oh, gosh - Midwest Airlines! I'd quite forgotten about them. I have certainly flown them in the past. (Domestic USA).
Haters for a trip report channel? I guess no one escapes. And, yes, ignoring is the only sane response. Stepping into their web never, ever works. And, oh, the identification of the town you asked for at 7:03 - it's Makarska, Croatia! Wow - I spent an hour trolling for it along the Adriatic coastline on Google Earth. Always fascinating and easy to get distracted. :D
