  • Come along as I tackle the legendary Mt. Lemmon climb in Tucson, AZ. This is one of the most famous climbs among professional cyclist in the US and is a breeding ground for cycling snowbirds during the winter months!

    In 1984 I was stationed at DM Air Force base Tucson az. I purchased a brand new Peugeot road bike. I rode up to my Lemmon from the base in mid summer. 38 years later and I’m back in Tucson.

    Great to watch this video! I rode Mt Lemmon in 93 I think, in April. Had to to go around a mud slide halfway in my ride. Like you I turned around when there was all this snow at the side of the road, and it got pretty cold. It was the end of the afternoon, 4 o'clock. Surreal, but I could hear voices when I stopped. That appeared to be some rock climbers, high above me on a rock face. I have no idea how far up the mountain I was. And of course I was back in the desert, and Tucson, in a jiffy ... It seemed! Great memories!

    Good call and not proceeding on in icy conditions. I had the experience of not using such good judgement and was going about 20 mph on flat ground and hit a slick spot and went flying. I had taken my gloves off since had warmed up and first came down on my left hand and cartwheeled over and slammed might right side of my body. By the end of it all, I bloodied the palm and knuckle of my left hand, the knuckle on the pinkie of my right hand plus had a strawberry right above my right knee and on the side of my right elbow. My helmet was scuffed up and destroyed my nice Nike sports coat but it did save me from road rash. It also messed up my bike a little bit. I was lucky i was able to walk away from it.

    Awesome video. Brings back memories of when I spent a month in Tucson tagging along with the Canadian Olympic team back in 1992. I remember thinking I could climb, but was in for a rude awakening. Steep 1 km ascents pale in comparison to the effort it takes to ride up these beasts. Note to those from eastern Ontario who travel to Tucson for early season training: If you're in shape, it really doesn't take a long time to drastically improve your times riding up Mt Lemmon. I was there for a month and was dropped barely two km's in to the ascent when I arrived. I never managed to hang with the fittest, but by the end of my stay I could do 8-10 km's before blowing up. Never managed to stay in contact with Olympians and pros, but I was strong like bull when returning home.

    Great video. Great ride. I've done it twice, 4 hours each time for this old man. Would have loved to have seen a speed shot on the descent.

    Thank you for making this. I’m climbing Mt. Lemmon in March and I’ve been combing TH-cam looking for vides of the climb. This is by far the best. Awesome job!

    Not quite the top at Summer Haven. True distance is about 27 miles. The last road past the ski lodge is the steepest stuff ever, over 16% at many spots.

    This is such an excellent video. I'm a professional Media educator and have watched many cycling videos; this is by far the best for photography, editing, length, music and overall quality. A joy to watch! I'm also a cyclist, soon to move from New Hampshire to Tucson. Your inspirational video has given me one more confirmation for moving to Tucson! Thank you and well done!

      He has an almost constant BPM of 150'ish. Which is much more impressive, cause holding that for over an hour takes some real mental strength!

    Thanks for sharing! How did you get the speed/power/map/elevation to display as an overlay on the video? Is that a GoPro feature or Garmin? If you can point me in the right direction that would be great. I'd love to get something that would overlay stats like that on my videos.

      It pretty hard as it's so long and you are at altitude for most of it. You can stop whenever you want

    i'm thinking about doing a bit of solo training camp out there in March. is there an ideal part of tucson to stay? mostly concerned with being able to ride from my door to the goods roads. also, walking/riding distance to stores would be cool too. thanks for the vid!

      @mattzimmer5470  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      n0twist1 we are on the East end of town and it's super easy access to lemmon and open roads to the east like pistol hill. Grocery store is half a block away as well! Check out my Strava and you can see all the rides I've been doing and it will give you the best idea!

    Live in Goodyear, planning to train on South Mountain in Phoenix, about 7 miles long and 1,500 feet of climbing. Only way to replicate the mileage of Mt Lemmon is to do repeats. I think the climb tops out about 2,500 ft. Concern is the elevation gain on Mt Lemmon. How would you suggest I train for that aspect?

    • @mattzimmer5470
      @mattzimmer5470  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually done some riding on South Mountain a few years ago. Training for climbing is like training for anything else really as you are training that specific energy system rather than that specific effort. You can simulate similar training with long, low cadence intervals on flats or just working with what you have and doing intervals or repeats on south mtn

      Hey man, thanks a million!!! By chance, if I send you a dropbox folder, could you drop the video into it? I could download it from one of the TH-cam-rip-off sites, but it's not as good. If so, just shoot me text message of your email address and I'll share a dropbox folder with you. Either way, THANKS A MILLION :D
