Alkalilee Hansi Kürsch, Fabio Lione, Jari Mäenpää, Helge Stang, Luca Turilli (Mainly a guitarist and a songwriter, but has an amazing voice), Alessandro Conti... to name a few. :)
RunicDragons Okay, Hansi would rank up there, but Jari Mäenpää? Are you fucking kidding me? His vocals don't even sort of touch Devin's. Also, Devin is a hell of a lot more versatile than a lot of vocalists.
Myself as someone vocally trained in opera singing, I really have to commend Devin for his mastery of a combined metal and operatic style, and his ability to switch at will when needed. It's something I've been desperately trying to perfect, myself.
A lesser man would shred his vocal cords but Devin knows how to do it properly and not do any damage. He's my favorite singer for good reason. He always sounds great live as well.
The "ouch" was because he ran out of air, and once you push past that point, you get a nice surge of pain to the brain. Kinda feels like extreme brain freeze....Once he started blinking like that, I knew exactly what it was haha. The man has an amazing lung capacity for sure though.
Devin on several occasions has admitted he hurts his voice a lot doing what he does and loses a little bit of his range with each tour/year. Well, by his screaming primarily.
I know! I think it's fairly common for most vocalists who utilize the highest part of their register in songs. I know Jon Bon Jovi had to tune all their songs down after, I think it was the tour after the release of "Slippery when wet".
Wow, it's cool to read about Fergie Frederiksen under a Devin Townsend video. The dude was really a gifted singer, with a range untouched even in the latest years. Ultimately an underrated vocalist who could do much more than just one (terrific) album with Toto and then some nostalgia in the latest 2010s. Love Fergie
I don't know of any other vocalist that are so equally honest that they allow the fans to hear their process like this. Screwups, falsetakes etc. Devy, you're my Shevy-to-the-Levy!
His voice makes me question my vows. then I remember he's happily married... I could never eff with Devy's happiness. I guess I'm where I belong dammit. grumble grumble. Guess its back to work on my slutty time machine. Its not cheating if it happens before we/they're together. there could be no nobler use of time manipulation...
Is it weird that I'm not a fan of his music but I love him as a vocalist? Such a great, clean voice, and such an effortless distortion. Really wish he'd do covers of other metal songs, he'd smash pretty much anything.
its the whole control of going from Opera into scream-mode while perfectly shifting note while retaining consistency, tuning and vibrato at the beginning. such a beast!
zarucarsha Is there a DL link or video somewhere? I like Anneke's version, but Devin is definitely a bigger inspiration to me as a vocalist. :P EDIT: Nevermind, just found it haha
If he has an improper technique, no doubt, but the guy has been screaming and singing since he was a teenager, gone through addictions to smoking, alcohol, and drugs, as well as the massive wear and tear of touring for however many years (especially with songs like Deadhead), but yet he's sounding better now than he ever has. The man is legendary.
I saw Anneke playing the song live with Gentle Storm a few days ago, and she sang with much more intensity than on the studio version. It was incredible.
When you're doing vocals, do you sit there and slave over subtleties where the vocals might be empty in certain parts of the mix? Like are you aware of every little tiny chunk that is needed beforehand? Obviously you multitrack the fuck out of them sometimes, but how much of the final product is based on mindfulness of what's needed versus post production? I know how to produce almost all of my instruments, but I'm going to be recording vocals here soon. I'm absolutely clueless. Thanks, Devin.
Hey Devin, sounds great and I'm really looking forward to the album, yeah! But earnestly, that should'nt hurt, take care of your voice, we alle want to listen to you for a long time!
the released version is good, but i've been looking forward to this one since this youtube video came up :/. Can't say i'm not disappointed it didnt make it onto the album.
ohboyohboyohboy! I can't bear such excitement! It's like when I was waiting for the Addicted! album to come out to listen to how Supercrush! was like! ALL OVER AGAIN!!! oh boy!!!
I know that that background music we hear is what's blasting out from inside those headphones of yours... No denying it! Btw, this is awesome. MMOOOOOAAAAARRR!!
Hey DT Garry here (Jeff Beck Achillea Joe Lynn Turner drummer) love all the new stuff and the old, total music inspiration. Just hooked up with RVP online what a great guy and player. have a great one mate, all the best
I don't know what it is... But getting your mind-set out of the sound-room and visualizing you're on the Stage is one of the most challenging things I faced as a singer. Thrill of the Stage just bumps it up a notch. Just need to trick the brain that your not standing in a dead room...
All i can see on the sidebar/related videos is "Amazing 7 yr old sings Billie Holiday", "Random Girl sings at mall", and "2 year old sings Wrecking Ball", etc. This just tells me the internet is ready for Dev to do a cover of "Let It Go" from Frozen.
Weird, I always pictured you atop a mountain whenever you recorded vocals.
How do you know he isn't ontop of one?
Hello Austen
With a single SM57 somewhere in the valley below...
Thomas Revill Haha xD Yes! That should work.
SM57? This is coming from his cell phone mic. Insane.
He shames 99% of male vocalists while sitting in a chair.
99%? I wouldn't go that far. There are many great male vocalists out there.
RunicDragons None as great as DT
Alkalilee Hansi Kürsch, Fabio Lione, Jari Mäenpää, Helge Stang, Luca Turilli (Mainly a guitarist and a songwriter, but has an amazing voice), Alessandro Conti... to name a few. :)
RunicDragons Okay, Hansi would rank up there, but Jari Mäenpää? Are you fucking kidding me? His vocals don't even sort of touch Devin's. Also, Devin is a hell of a lot more versatile than a lot of vocalists.
RunicDragons The vocal performances on the new BG record omygod
Myself as someone vocally trained in opera singing, I really have to commend Devin for his mastery of a combined metal and operatic style, and his ability to switch at will when needed. It's something I've been desperately trying to perfect, myself.
I love Devin. He's such a beast of a singer, and he's such an incredible musician.
+SD Hussey I'd say he's the best vocalist and musician that's ever lived. No one comes close to his voice or his talent for writing amazing music.
+jacobjedi2 agreed
And an even better human being.
"...ouch..."
Yea, I bet. Damn....
A lesser man would shred his vocal cords but Devin knows how to do it properly and not do any damage. He's my favorite singer for good reason. He always sounds great live as well.
But he said "ouch" at the end C:
It doesn't mean he still doesn't get sore after singing for hours on end
I feel like the ouch was just because he was stretching his jaw so much.
He said touring makes his vocal range recede a couple of notes every year...not noticed
I know! I think it's fairly common for most vocalists who utilize the highest part of their register in songs. I know Jon Bon Jovi had to tune all their songs down after, I think it was the tour after the release of "Slippery when wet".
That's farily common...with the wrong technique and improper voice care. Never seemed to affect the late Fergie Frederiksen though.
Love Fergie
At times on Strappings earlier albums he screamed close to a dogwhistles freq lol
infinity minus 1 is still infitine
Holy sh*t, listening to Devin's voice is kinda... you know... damn, I don't even have the words to express it's exceptional uniqueness :D
Ádám Vécsey . At the end there,,,, so fucking LOUUUD🤘🤘🤘
Now that's an artist, he sees all of the layers and textures in his head and just lays them down like that! Painting with sound...
I don't know of any other vocalist that are so equally honest that they allow the fans to hear their process like this. Screwups, falsetakes etc. Devy, you're my Shevy-to-the-Levy!
oh, man... Devin's voice makes me question my straightness...
+ToxicTV I know... I have this odd feeling inside of me
Him and maynerd from tool do that to me to
LOL!!!!
Woah... that’s gay!
His voice makes me question my vows. then I remember he's happily married... I could never eff with Devy's happiness. I guess I'm where I belong dammit. grumble grumble. Guess its back to work on my slutty time machine. Its not cheating if it happens before we/they're together. there could be no nobler use of time manipulation...
in opposite from most metal/extreme vocalist , he has evolve throught the pass of time and his vocals are better than ever.
That's due to him singing correctly.
Actually no. He said on a video of the making off Transcedence series that he has no technique at all. He simply does it.
Gutemberg Pedrosa Just because he hasn't had any formal training doesn't mean he's doing it wrong.
@@BigFatCock0 he doesn't know what he's doing, he just know-hows what he's doing :)
OMG that scream at the end! o_o How you do that ? xD
If you could upload even more videos of vocal recording it would be awesome! (I'm addicted =p)
Is it weird that I'm not a fan of his music but I love him as a vocalist? Such a great, clean voice, and such an effortless distortion. Really wish he'd do covers of other metal songs, he'd smash pretty much anything.
He did do Exciter by Judas Priest
This is what U call GOIN' FOR BROKE !!
Cool to see the process of making a great vocal track !!
Thanks D.T.
AMAZING note.. then, 'Oww... Ouch!'
ya.. i suddenly feel lame for being a bassist!
the man is just one big badass vocal chord
It's a singing turtle !
His voice is so good it sends shivers down my spine every time.
5 years later and this is still one of my favorite videos of all time
The note at 1:26 is out of this world
***** A#4 - C5, so yeah, for a 40 year old man I'm thiking that was pushing it but thank shit he does these things.
isnt it cool that he posted it?
its the whole control of going from Opera into scream-mode while perfectly shifting note while retaining consistency, tuning and vibrato at the beginning. such a beast!
The hand makes is so much more intense
He's done an A5/A#5 full head voice in Exciter (Judas priest cover) Not to mention his notes in Far Beyond Metal, Trainfire, Vampira etc.
Devin ! OMG 😱 ! Those final notes were from another galaxy!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
holy fucking shit, aside from the mindblowing vocals the music sounded incredible!!!!
Can't wait the new album Devin :)
Ouais trop hâte !
2 albums later...
I guess you could wait after all
same here man
This song is called "Fallout" from the DTP side. I can tell by the way he yells "FALLOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUTT!!!"
Kind of bummed out that Devy isn't singing this part on the album version of the song. He sounds great.
lucky for us the old version of the song leaked and it has him singing it. :)
zarucarsha Is there a DL link or video somewhere? I like Anneke's version, but Devin is definitely a bigger inspiration to me as a vocalist. :P
EDIT: Nevermind, just found it haha
It seems hard for him, and singing that every night would destroy his voice.
The man is legendary.
jacobjedi2 Dude, where the hell is it? I cannot find it.
Amazing vocalist. Amazing musician. Amazing Devin :)
Cant say anything. Just Love you man. just fking love you. Saludos desde Argentina!!!
Devin version > Anneke version.
Timmy Midhamn A Sun goddess hohoho
+Richard Foff Yeah I gotta agree, Anneke is amazing but Devs version has so much more feeling behind it.
I saw Anneke playing the song live with Gentle Storm a few days ago, and she sang with much more intensity than on the studio version. It was incredible.
+Juan Julio Reyes Manzano LOL huehuehuehuhue
huehuehuehue

Hey Devin, sounds great and I'm really looking forward to the album, yeah!
But earnestly, that should'nt hurt, take care of your voice, we alle want to listen to you for a long time!
You know its epic when even the mic starts shaking and shivering with excitement.
Devin buddy, I admire the hard work you put into these albums. We appreciate it!
the released version is good, but i've been looking forward to this one since this youtube video came up :/. Can't say i'm not disappointed it didnt make it onto the album.
It has been released (well, leaked) if you search Fallout Devin version. I much prefer his version!
isn't it fun to engineer, produce and sing at the same time?,,lol,,keep up the great work Dev
I keep coming back to this video. This is just amazing. I can't wait to hear the final product!
First time ever post anywhere.HOLY CRAP Dev. You r like a fine wine. gettin better w age. hope it didnt take long to heal from that throat ripper.
ohboyohboyohboy! I can't bear such excitement! It's like when I was waiting for the Addicted! album to come out to listen to how Supercrush! was like! ALL OVER AGAIN!!! oh boy!!!
Just simply Awesome. I'm guessing you're layering vocals.! Can't wait for the release!
All my good parts are tingling...
never ceases to amaze me, how crazy Devine's vocal skills are
love how you combine rough singing with opera style
jesus christ that was intense at the end
Thanks for letting us into the process. Very interesting to see the pieces you've been posting for us. Much appreciated!
I know that that background music we hear is what's blasting out from inside those headphones of yours... No denying it! Btw, this is awesome. MMOOOOOAAAAARRR!!
Thank you for bringing us your music Dev. Would be a shitty world without your talent to pleasure us. 🤘
"Hah..... Ouch." My jaw dropped at that phrase, insane power.
You rule, Dev! Thanks for giving us a glimpse!
His voice is so soulfully explosive!!
i'd love to buy a beer for this handsome man
I have a theory that Devin Townsend is actually an immortal God of the voice.
Best singer in metal (and rock...)
Beautiful voice.
Utterly brilliant! I LOVE your vocals!!!
That last note was absolutely amazing, Devy. Can't wait to see you again, in Philly!
Hey DT Garry here (Jeff Beck Achillea Joe Lynn Turner drummer) love all the new stuff and the old, total music inspiration. Just hooked up with RVP online what a great guy and player. have a great one mate, all the best
Love to watch an artist at work! Way to go, Devy!
Sounds fucking out of this world! Keep up the good work Dev! :D
Love stuff like this! Thanks Devin and please keep posting!
Can't wait to hear it dev! Thanks for all the great jams, this sounds like another good one ;) \m/
This man knows how to get people hyped for an album!
Devin is a monster. But seeing the pain on his face reveals why he released the version with Anneke on lead vocals, instead of him! Poor guy
Just bought Z2. Phenomenal album. You are an amazing musician. Can't wait for the next one!
Well, I'm crying like a little girl. This is awesome😁
You know what funny, from certain angles Devin actually looks alot like Ziltoid
Hmm...You noticed Ziltoid.. He's sporting the Skullet...
Well duh, it's meant to look like him
Ziltoid was made in Dev's image, y'kno ;)
It's gritty yet clean
Amazing, your songs have got me through some hard times.
This song is gonna be epic.
Más de 15 años escuchando Metal, y hasta que empecé a interesarme en los vocalistas, fue que me encuentro a Dios: Maestro Devin.
i hope this back sound goes not from your headphones )))
awesome voc technique.
what is the mic? Rode?
ahh.. coming back after 8 years to say "it's not Rode". And vocals performance is still epic!
What a god damn musical genius.
Devy's songs are like parfe.... So many layers
I love this song sooo much! Still prefer the version with Dev on the majority of the vocals.
Go Devin!! Your vox sound awesome!
1:30 Devil looks like the new Nemesis in RE3
I don't know what it is... But getting your mind-set out of the sound-room and visualizing you're on the Stage is one of the most challenging things I faced as a singer. Thrill of the Stage just bumps it up a notch. Just need to trick the brain that your not standing in a dead room...
Fucking Devin, dude.... man, his vocals give me goosebumps. Loving every bit of this.
Devin.. You are a fucking god man
Great song. I especially liked the note at 1:26.
Devin is of the few metal singers that sounds good before mixing. A lot of times the raw recordings sound kinda shitty
A genius at work.
I love your voice.
The ending is mindblowing. I shall have my cup of coffee now.
This is like watching a surgeon operate on himself.
I just fucking love it man!!!!!
love you devin :)
in the most metal of ways of course
eso debió doler!!!! un genio el dolape!!!! cuando sea grande quiero ser al menos parecido a un lunar de el XD jajajajajajajaja
so amasing and great singer!!!
Awesome insight on how it's done... but yeah... multiple takes, and a lot of comping until perfection is obtained.
Holy fucking shit man that sounded painful and just wow dude, really just sodding wow,. Yeah that's it just wow.
Oh wow, this sounds fucking amazing!!!!
That was amazing, keep it up Dev!
I would give my left leg to have a week of production / training with this man
Wow, vocals extraordinaire
Is this part of the Ziltoid sequel that is slated for this year? Devin ' s singing abilities are amazing!
Dear, Devin
Balls.
Your's truely, Jesse James
Intimate and, Brilliant.
You sir, are a god.
OH MY A SNEAK PEAK OF Z2??????????????????????
This is so awesome!
More raw Devin please......!!!
