Sometimes, we wonder about the right needle or thread for a leather upholstery project. This video would give us an idea about the use of the correct needle and thread for a determined project. If I want to sew a thin leather material, so, I should use a 'thin needle and thread'...if I rather use a big needle, it would make 'big holes' and my leather project would look ugly.
I would advise a 'standard needle' to do car upholstery with a Pfaff 1245 ...it is a 140=22 needle size...it works well with the thin 'standard thread' most of the upholsterers use. The thicker thread is used on 'double/french stitches' on top view.

What would be the cause of threat fraying at the needle? Do you have any ideas for me to check? Thanks
This issue always happens with upper thread.
1. If the needle is lightly bended could cause a rubbing against the hook point of shuttle and cause fraying.
2. The needle could rub against one side of presser foot and cause fraying.
3. The needle could be rubbing against side wall of needle plate hole.
4. If the needle bar is lightly disadjusted could cause the hook point of shuttle rub the upper thread and fray.
5. If we sew thicker materials and the needle is too thin it bends and rubs the hook point of shuttle, presser foot or little hole of bottom plate.

Hi i owned a pfaff 138-6 the basic one.i started to make wrestling masks lucha libre mask. I use a presser foot teflon abd needles size 12 Organ Titanium 134R 135X5 DPX5 1955 also guttermann thread most like sew vinyl and holographic vinyles and leather any advice if im using the right thread and needles. It is ok for what you are doing. Bigger needles could make bigger holes.
In car upholstery and furniture the basic/standard thread is the 92 size. Basic needles for this thread size are from 18 to 21

I just bought the goldest. Part presser foot adapter #6603 for my pfaff 138-6 low shank and it makes a huge difference

+Mike Tucker Fortunately, I did not change tensions for the three sizes of thread...Most of the times, it is necessary do adjustments on the 'upper tension disk' and the 'small tensioner' on the bobbin case.

I found an old manual for a Pfaff 1245 saying the 706/47 uses the 190 needle system...I've always used the 134/135 system....have you tried both? Do you have a preference?
I always have used the 134-35 needle system for the old Pfaff I show in the video. I have never tried the 190 needle system, sorry.

The standard thread N° 8 is the same 92 size in USA
Most of the upholsterers use it to join/sew pieces together (vinyl, leather,etc.)

Hi Cesar, I love your videos and your very high quality and first class work ! these videos are really very useful for me. In one of them you're speaking about the right needle size for the Pfaff 1245-706/47, unfortunately I'm unable to pick it up again ... I just bought a similar 1245-706/47 as yours and I'm about to order some needle sets of various thickness (Incredible that this machine is working capable with 180 needles !!!) : Thank you for sharing with us the best needle size type for this wonderful machine.
Another question is about timing : Is the needle/hook distance adjustment the same for a 180 and a 90 needle ? I mean, because of the different thickness, if you're doing the adjustment with a 90 needle is there a danger that a 180 needle with the same adjustment would probably touch the hook ? You're not mechanician but you've a lot of experience adjusting your machines by yourself, sharing these tips is very useful for us. Never I thought timing my machines by myself but because of your videos, I started and now I would love spend all my days long timing machines !!! As far as I know the distance from the 'hook' to 'needle scarf' should be always the same for any size of needle...it is not necessary to do an adjustment for a thin needle or a thick one.
In fact, the 1245 pfaff manual recommends the use of needles from 110=18 to 180=24. A 'standard size' the upholsterers use is a 140=22 needle size.

No sales del tipo de punta LR (diagonal) bien la R..(.perforante circular).
Y siempre en los sistemas DPX 5 y 17 hasta grosor de 140 ...lo que limita mucho poder adquirirlo ya que los mayoristas no venden a pequeños artesanos...lo que nos obliga a buscar a pequeños comerciantes que no traen a requerimiento dado el poco margen de ganancias
.....sucede acá con el representante de Groz Brecket marca alemana que también es dueña de schmetz que se quedará con la línea doméstica....desde el próximo año...
Al parecer ese tipo de clientes sólo compraran vía internet.....
Sobre puntas las hay muchas más....

You gave me motivation to make examples of each needle size and thread size to get more accurate understading of this issue.
I'm am sewing for the army currently, I use cordura 1000 material, i sew many layers, webbings with corduras, and hard foams
i can get easly to up to 6 layers of sewing and i use 120 needle with 40# size ipcabond nylon thread.
Whould you reccomend me to keep it those sizes?
I cannot advise much because I have no much experience on sewing cordura, sorry. In the past I did one to three bags with this material.
If the 120 needle size passes easily through without twisting then it is right. It also depends on the kind of 'needle tip' yo are using.

Thanks you for the video. I have one of these machines and am having major issues with the top thread breaking. I have had it serviced and seemed to work fine for a while but is back to breaking the thread. I am using a 120 needle and 69 thread. The strange thing is I have a spool of thread that seems to be fine and doesn't have issues but 4 or 5 others that break almost immediately after starting to sew. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
+Ian Gibbons Thread and needle are correct...the needle should freely pass down through the holes of presser foot and needle plate...check carefully, all its way down... the procedure moving the 'big pulley' by hand... think, that thread is rubbing against the 'little holes'(both, needle plate or presser foot)...if it rubs, thread frays and breaks.
+Cechaflo Thanks for the reply. The needle seems to be passing through the presser foot without issue but I am not sure about the needle plate. Should the needle be dead center of the hole on the plate when going down as mine seems to be slightly towards the back of the hole. If so how does one change its front to back position I watched your timing the 1245 video but wasn't sure what function moved the position of the hole. Thanks again for your help it has been very frustrating trying to get this to work.
+Ian Gibbons In first comment you mentioned you have a similar machine(pfaff1245-706)...these machines have the 'little holes' with enough room to let pass through thick needles. Perhaps, the problem is in the timing...the 'hook of shuttle' could be catching the 'thread loop' that forms the needle out of time...maybe, it is 'slow' and it causes too much tension and breaks the upper thread...this 'hook' has a sharpened edge.
+Cechaflo I adjusted the timing as per your other video (which was very good thanks for posting it) but still having the thread break. There seems to be some issue with the upper thread tension still as I have backed the tension right off and tightened up the bobbin tension as much as I can but I am still getting the bottom thread pulling through to the top of the work. Any idea what I might be missing. I really appreciate your time on this.
+Ian Gibbons Check if you are using the appropiate needle length(134-35). When the machine is in time, no much tension is necessary in the upper side, because the 'hook point' fast catches the 'thread loop' and also fast and soft gives its round to do the 'lock stitch' with the 'bobbin thread'...perhaps, it is necessary to put ahead a little the hook point to do a faster 'catch'.
Check the lower tension by pulling with your hand the thread of the bobbin...it should be pulled very soft...you could feel if it is too tight.
Please, let us know what happened.

Hello i am from Romania,i watched your video about Pfaff,I love how you explain everthing,I learned a lot from them ,I also have a Durkop Adler 167-74 sewing machine,just bought it,it works very well,but when i change the needles it skips stiches.it came with an schmetz 21-130 needle,an i tried to put in an Rhein Nadel-innova 134-35/100-16 needle can you help me to undestand were is the issue?.all i know about these type of sewing machine is from your video.thank you very much.

I am aware the needles are a bit shorter than Pfaff 1245 needles (system 135/17)
Your machine is very similar to Pfaff 145 that uses a system 134

Hi Shauntoni, Big needle to open a big hole to let thread goes through easily. If using a thin needle the thread could stick in the middle of rubber material and lose a stitch.
I think it also depends on the kind of rubber you are pretending to sew. Do some tests beforehand. Perhaps you would not need a too big 24 needle.

+hebert damian Hola Hebert, Para hacer 'costuras que unen partes' uso el hilo de polyester que casi todos los tapiceros usan No 8 y para 'sobrecoser o hacer las puntadas dobles' uso el hilo No cero...los hilos mas gruesos los uso en casos especiales como decorativos por encima del material...estas medidas son en México...me gustaría saber la medida correspondiente que se usa en el otro lado (USA)...tengo una idea muy vaga acerca de estas medidas.
Tengo entendido que en USA, los hilos mas comunes para tapicería son el 92, 138, 207 y 277 ...¿cuál es el que corresponde a los de aquí? ...a lo mejor Ud. alguien ayuda a resolver este riddle...éste es el link de una página sobre hilos:

The given measures in the video are used in Mexico...number 8 is the standard measure used to do upholstery in most of the countries, then it comes a thicker thread number 'zero' and at last a thread 'double zero' .
I am not completely sure, but I ma trying to guess if number 8 corresponds to measure 92, then it comes 138 and 207 (USA measures) If possible, perhaps you could find that out and let us know which one is each one.

Estimado maestro, parece que no hay muchas máquinas de triple arrastre en Panamá.
Estuve buscando en Mercado libre Panamá, pero no me sale nada relacionado.

Muchas gracias también por el enlace a esa página tan interesante donde explican sobre el tema de las agujas, pero mi duda es el tipo de punta "wedge point" que usted utiliza, ya que hay muchos tipos de esa punta para cuero...
Veo que sus costuras son impecables, y cuando sepamos el tipo de punta que usted utiliza en sus trabajos podremos comprar el mismo tipo para emplearlo nosotros.
Tal vez tiene usted a mano alguna caja de sus agujas, y así puede fijarse en el tipo de punta que indica esa caja? Justo hace unos minutos acabo de hacer un pedido de agujas, y he pedido con punta S y D, que he leído que sirven para hacer una puntada recta.
Un tapicero que conozco emplea el tipo de punta R, pero es una punta que está más bien pensada para tejidos, y las puntadas en cuero las hace un poco irregulares, motivo por el cual, como usted bien indica, es recomendable utilizar puntas específicas para cuero.

+Elivanelima Maria Para algunos trabajos en cuero necesitamos 'baja velocidad' de la máquina de coser. Hay máquinas que tienen 'motor servo' que cuentan con un 'reloj' que regula la velocidad, permitiendo inclusive coser puntada por puntada. Mi máquina es de 'motor con clutch'...tuve que hacerle unas adaptaciones para bajarle la velocidad...no está perfecto, pero si me ayuda mucho.
Buenas, hay mucha diferencia con la pfaff 545 y la 1245? Para materiales gruesos sobre todo me interesa. Muchas gracias
Me he dado cuenta que son muy similares, por no decir idénticas. La 545 se me hace hasta mas poderosa que la 1245. La version 145 es mas antigua parecida muy buena también de la marca Pfaff. Dan puntada máxima de 6 mm y cosen con agujas desde 110=18 hasta 200 = 25.

The measures (8, zero, double zero, and triple zero) I mention are used in Mexico...sorry. Measures are different in USA. I'm not sure, but it seems to me measure 092 corresponds to number 8 thin upholstery thread; 138=number zero; 207=number double zero; 277=triple zero...I'm not sure, sorry.
The thread I use to do upholstery is 'polyester thread'. Nylon thread is useful when we do upholstery marine jobs.

Hi Cechflo, In the video at 3:00 you say you're using a Size#8 thread with a 90/14 needle. I have T90 (#92) thread and that doesn't even fit in 90/14 needle. Are you using a special needle with a bigger eye?

A 120=19 needle size with 92 thread size, A 130=21 needle size it is slightly thicker but it would be ok to sew several layers of vinyl.

Muy buena la explicación del video !!! Le pregunto si para hacer diseños de costura en vinil es necesario husar un hilo diferente al que huso para coser !!! Y otra cosa yo cuando hice un cover para un asiento de carro al jalarlo cuando lo estaba poniendo se le hizo un hoyo grande !!! Será porque no estoy husando la ahuja adecuada !!!
+betty cuadras No se que máquina estará usando, para trabajar con vinil, creo que es suficiente una aguja 120=19 ...¿qué aguja estuvo usando? ...la 120 puede usarse con el hilo No 8...si se va usar el segundo hilo mas grueso (cero), entonces tiene que ser la aguja 140=22. Hay que checar bien las tensiones antes de coser un material (tanto arriba como abajo en la bobina)

El hilo y la aguja están correctos...antes de ejecutar alguna costura verifique que la costura (lock stitch) esté bien ajustado...si la tensión está floja ocasiona que no cierre bien...si la costura es liviana, podría usar una aguja mas delgada...puede ser una aguja 12=19

It is necessary to adjust tensions every time a needle and thread is changed. Above all the threads if the needle remains set on.

What does a number 8 thread size translate to Tx size?
If I am right it is size 92/tex90

@@Cechaflo What about size #0 thread to TX size? Your stitching always looks beautiful. My Singer 132K6 does not do such a nice stitch. I use a Metric size40 thread which is what is available locally in Australia, I don't know how it relates to the other sizing. I am a motor trimmer and your videos have inspired me to do this work again. Thank you!

@@Cechaflo First of all thank you so much for inspiring videos :D I just wanted to ask about the sizes you mentioned in the videos. For the needles everything is clear, but I'm really not sure about the thread. When I call the local dealer and ask for the upholstery thread they offered me 15,20, or 30 for smaller stitches. What is relevant for the sizes #8 #0 and #00 ? Thnak you so much!
@@djordjeilic9634 In car upholstery three sizes are used as you mentioned in your comment. Size 8 equivalent to 92 (sure) Size 0 equivalent to 138(sure) and
Size 00 equivalent to 207 (still in doubt, because I am located in Mexico and do not know much English sizes)

In Mexico we call that thread 'double zero'. I am not sure, but it seems in the USA corresponds to 207 or 270

What I am completely sure is size zero is equal to 138 and it is used for the 'european stitches or basting stitches'.

I have acquired a '40s or '50s 241-12. Runs like a top but the needle thread gets caught when I try to catch the bobbin thread, every time. Tensions, top and bottom, feel good and I have tried readjusting both to no avail.
Old 241-12 bobbin issue... found a burr on the bobbin casing tension plate holding screw. While trying to deburr it, of course, I lost the tiny screw. Seems to be sewing fine without it. Hopefully the local machine repair will have a replacement.

Que hilos usa para cada aguja?
El hilo 'standard' para tapicería es el N° 8 (92 en USA) y puede ser usado con todas las agujas 110=18, 120=19, 140=22, 160=23, 180=24 hasta 200=25. Hay tapiceros que usan esta medida de hilo para todas las costuras.
El hilo N° zero generalmente para puntadas decorativas (puntadas dobles y sobrecosidos) como es ligeramente mas grueso no pasa con facilidad por el ojo de las agujas 110 y 120. Se debería usar como mínimo con la 140 y las otras que son gruesas.
Si usaría hilo mas grueso como el 'doble cero', entonces la aguja ideal sería a partir de la 180, hata la 200.

Saludos cechaflo en USA el zero se pide Zero otiene o tiene otro número ,e buscado en internet y hay mucho de hilos uno es t270 otro B92 T70 otro #69 es donde me confundo yo apenas empiezo y muchas gracias
@@elvochovolador El numero 92 (Tex 90) en USA corresponde al hilo standard para tapizar y es el N° 8 aquí en Mexico. El 69 (Tex 70) en USA es mas delgadito. El número 'zero' aquí en Mexico corresponde al 138 (Tex135) en USA y se usa mas para hacer las puntadas decorativas por encima.
Los hilos comunes para hacer tapicería son de poliester. En este link nos ilustran al respecto:
