What I find so interesting is the evolution of morality through the centuries. Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Daniel, Elijah and Elisha were all magicians to a greater or lesser degree. But by the 1st century, such practice was cause for damnation, and one of the first things a Pauline convert might do is burn his grimoir. More subtly, broad tracks of what we call history are actually astro-myth. Samson is a sun God, as is Moses and Jesus. Mary is a moon goddess, and together with Jesus becomes a mercurial psychopomp. It seems strange to take threats of eternal punishment seriously when legendary personages can't even be written with a consistent moral code.
I'm curious how much longer the eternal punishment interpretation will hold out. Papa Francis seems to be a universalist and given how adaptable the Catholic Church has proven to be I think it must just be a matter of time before universalism is officially and widely accepted
Yes, even now I've heard priests say hell may be empty, and the Catholic church has never infallibly declared anyone to be damned. So, the groundwork is already laid for universalism.
Also it's true that morality has evolved, more than people realize, and most don't realize the extent to which one's gender (reproductive strategy) and genetic makeup (group evolutionary strategy) influence what they perceive as 'objectively good'

@@Catholic-Perennialist Yep. There isn't the social consciousness necessary to uphold it any longer. Most do simply out of habit
