Jack Dempsey was Mike Tyson’s boxing hero. I’m not sure whether Mike was afraid of him, but if they were to meet in the ring, even if Jack Dempsey had the edge in skill, Mike Tyson would win no contest. Basically due to the shear size difference. Dempsey weighed about 180, and Tyson 220. At some point size difference does matter…
I'm sure Dempsey would put on muscle in preparation for the fight if he thought it was necessary. If they were to actually meet in the ring both would train like crazy for many months before the show down.
@@deadhouse3889 i think there’d still be a difference. Dempsey was naturally smaller than Tyson. If Dempsey put on muscle, we’re tracking about 40 lbs of unatyuralt weight to put on. that’s not easy and it’d slow him down.
You can't compare any of these athletes two different eras. Our athletes today are so well conditioned. They have private chefs, their own nutritionist. And each generation, like they call class of in the Hall of Fame, has their own struggles through the sport. Each and everyone of them was and are great for what the do.
I honestly believe Jack was a man of his time, I don’t believe he would have lasted amongst todays boxers and I think Mike Tyson would have beaten Jack and do not believe Tyson was scared of anyone.
What really matters is - Were they the best of their times !!! they both were - Dominant !!! Mike Tyson had a coach and was trained by experts ... Jack on the other remained underweight until he got some one to sponsor him !!!
Annoys me when people say todays fighter would’ve beaten a fighter 50 years ago, of course he should but you have to account for their skills at their own time. That’s why Ali is the GOAT. That title is eye catching but I highly doubt a prime Tyson feared any man, alive or dead. They're two fighters from very different eras, that being said, few compare to the boxing prowess of Iron Mike. Boxing has also come a long way since then in terms of strategy and styles.
If you could bring the best heavyweights of the 20th Century back all at their peaks to fight each other, all would have wins, all would have losses. That's all you can say. Probably, all of them would regard Ali as a wuss and a pattycake artist, but he would beat plenty of them. But not all of them all the time. Norton and Frazier collectively fought him essentially to a draw over six bouts. But then there's the 1960s Ali, essentially a different fighter than the post-1970 Ali, and a better one. The 1960s Ali fought some savages.
It is difficult to say that. Forman, Liston and Dempsey were one of their best in their era and Tyson is also one of the best in his Era. I can only say that it would be a very interesting fight if any of these 4 great meet each other.

He didn’t talk about the “long count” of the 2nd Tunney fight also that was the first fight ever that a fighter had Togo to a neutral corner during a knock down
He was afraid of more than Jack Dempsey, when he met his match with hollifield, he proved he was afraid of him and his last fight he quit sitting on his stool, refusing to answer the bell for the next round. Ironically it was Jack Dempsey who had said: A fighter doesn't quit sitting on his pants in the corner.

Dempsey never fought an African-American boxer during his heyday. Bear in mind that Jim Crow was very much alive and well (thanks to the Democratic Party) when Dempsey was in his prime years, and race riots would've ensued should he face a black boxer. The aftermath of the Jim Jeffries vs. Jack Johnson 1910 bout resulted in race riots throughout America resulting in hundreds of deaths and serious injury. So I would refrain from making a quick assessment of this matchup. Dempsey had never seen anything like Tyson standing across from him in the ring. While he did fight bigger men like Jess Willard, who stood 6'6, he never fought anyone as vicious as Iron Mike. But if I have to choose between the two AT GUNPOINT, I'd say Iron Mike would get the edge. Tyson fought bigger, stronger, and more skilled men than Dempsey did and would easily outbox Dempsey in the early rounds.
Little that you know Mike Tyson feared alot of boxers and he even said it. That's what made him so great, because he realized his fears and as a result,he said it made him fight harder. You guys claim you are Tyson fans, but at the same time you know nothing of him nor his mentally.
Jack Dempsey one night reportedly was stuck in traffic in a cab on a summer night with his arm out the window. A bike with two 20-year-olds came by & picked off (mugged) his Rolex watch. Jack got out of the cab and slowly walked toward them as the muggers tried to maneuver the gridlock. They didn't appear afraid of an 80+-year-old man walking toward them. They got off their bike & feinted tough-guy crude boxing stances. Witnessed by many. It was a headline the next day -- Jack Dempsey with a single punch each KO'd both muggers. He got his watch back. The 2 toughs had no idea who they picked a fight with. Never underestimate that old guy with the old man's strength -- he may have been a heavyweight champion at one time. And while he may not have had the stamina at over 80 for 12-rounds of boxing, he still had the instinctive skills.

impressive man. especially from that era . I thought the footage of sonny was special , but this was even earlier
There will never be another like him again .
Tyson did not fear him... He idolised him.. Cut from the same cloth,, he was great.

Those crowds were incredible. Just imagine time traveling thru the eras of some the greatest fights of the centuries
Would have loved to see Dempsey fight. One of the greatest of all time.
He's a legend but Iron Mike was never scared of him correct that caption
I think you miss quoted Tyson 😂 but big ups for Dempsey regardless
Nobody mentions that Firpo knocked him out of the ring, but Dempsey somehow went back and won the fight.
Dempsey cheated (sorry to his fans) but it's true. Firpo took him out of the ring for more than 10 seconds, but the people in the audience "pulled him up" back into the ring... A shame!!! (The fight should have been called off immediately, or given the title to Firpo.)
Tyson once said Dempsey was the only fighter he was afraid of
Never ever heard of Tyson being scared of Dempsey plus the fact they were probably 50 years apart in there respective careers. Dempsey was a hero of Tysons and thats well documented .

@@deadhouse3889 Rocky Marciano maybe Tyson.
just forget about it.
@@deadhouse3889 i think there’d still be a difference. Dempsey was naturally smaller than Tyson. If Dempsey put on muscle, we’re tracking about 40 lbs of unatyuralt weight to put on. that’s not easy and it’d slow him down.
@@natureboy5990 I'd actually rather see Dempsey vs Rocky. That's a better pairing than Tyson, imo.
Just like Tyson Fury would make a stain on the mat with Mike Tyson.
What a story. Amazing.
The coolest thing about Dempsey is he was a hungry bar brawler that beat the heck out of everyone for a dollar or two lol
You can't compare any of these athletes two different eras. Our athletes today are so well conditioned. They have private chefs, their own nutritionist. And each generation, like they call class of in the Hall of Fame, has their own struggles through the sport. Each and everyone of them was and are great for what the do.
I honestly believe Jack was a man of his time, I don’t believe he would have lasted amongst todays boxers and I think Mike Tyson would have beaten Jack and do not believe Tyson was scared of anyone.
i agree.
Yes fighters are way bigger now but if those fighters were around in those legends time then they would’ve been beaten and vice versa
@@daya579 yes exactly!
@@AS-pug Actually no. Ali and Tyson would have 0 issues beating the heavyweights of this era. They lack the skills, conditioning, and the heart. The only heavyweight who would be a challenge to both of them would be Tyson Fury.

Tyson was afraid of Jack Dempsey? I never knew that. I guess that's why they never fought.
Was Tyson afraid of John L Sullivan, too? Because I noticed they never fought, either.

Mike Tyson skillfully coped with fear and made himself a champion
Oh my gosh. Fantastically interesting story highlighting Dempsey's life. The rare and fascinating footage of the Dempsey - Willard upset is riveting.
Note: incredible how the ethics of this great sport have evolved. In the 1920s we see fighters getting almost murdered in situations where nowadays ref would have stopped fight EONS ago. See: Valentines Day Massacre
Mike is a reincarnation of Jack. They look alike, they sound alike, they were the David's against the Goliaths, and they were both savages that captured the attention of the world.

Wow. You must be a good boxer, then.
People still don't realize how poor people were back then and I mean about everyone was poor.
I have a hard time believing a man noted as the hardest hitter on the planet was afraid of anyone.
Tyson is not the hardest hitter.
Probably just means there was a lot of respect ,to the extent that if they were around at same time , Mike would prefer to not have to take him on..It is kinda like Bruce Lee..
He said he feared no man; however, there were a couple of dudes he wouldn't want yo meet in a dark alley

I've tried fairly well to find a good list of Jack Dempsey's sparring partners.
My dad always claimed his grandfather was Dempsey's sparring partner.
Apparently knocked him out once in a heavy spar. Dempsey told him to go pro himself, but construction was his profession.
My dad apparently got a pair of Jack's gloves, but being a kid at the time he tore them up beating up a tree and threw them out.
I only have my dad's word on it so I can't really say any of this is true, but want to believe it.
There is no way Mike Tyson was afraid of anyone during his prime when he was knocking people out cold in first round.
Tyson was scared before every fight, look it up in an interview, the fear of loosing made him train at 💯.

Damn Tyson was lucky to have found Cus, he got to experience and know every great fighter and era of American boxing. Cus said he was 12 or 13 when he would go see Jack Dempsey fight, that was in like 1920-1921 so just think of all the great fighters that's came about since Jack Dempsey that Cus got to see or know, thats a lot of experience and knowledge he got to obtain. Tyson coming along at the end of Cus' life got to learn everything that Cus had stored in his memory and everything he got to witness and experience from the late 1900's to the 1980's, thats a lot of boxing history Tyson got to learn and take in for his own career. Not to bad for a young kid raised in the harsh environment of 1960s-1970s Brooklyn, New York, Tyson was destined for greatness.

Two total different era's and Tyson is a huge fan of jack Dempsey
Dempsey was a wrecking ball 👊
I’ve never heard of this guy until now it was nice to know that life for him was a happy ending well about as happy as the end can be I suppose

Guys, i'm clearly joking by being a fan of Hajime no Ippo. Don't take this seriously.
Jack Dempsey wrote a good book on boxing
Tyson would have had to fight Dempsey in the nursing home.
He had already been dead for about two years by the time Tyson turned pro, lol
Little that you know Mike Tyson feared alot of boxers and he even said it. That's what made him so great, because he realized his fears and as a result,he said it made him fight harder. You guys claim you are Tyson fans, but at the same time you know nothing of him nor his mentally.

Title needs work
Jack Dempsey one night reportedly was stuck in traffic in a cab on a summer night with his arm out the window.
Tyson did not fear him he respected him and idolized him
