- Alsu Kurmasheva, an American-Russian journalist working for Radio Free Europe-Radio Liberty, was visiting her mother in Russia when authorities there confiscated her passports and jailed her. Kurmasheva faces charges that could lead to years of imprisonment because she edited a book of people's opinions about Russia's war with Ukraine. Correspondent Seth Doane talks with Kurmasheva's family and colleagues about the increasing dangers that journalists are facing from governments trying to mask the truth - what Jodie Ginsberg, chief executive officer of the Committee to Protect Journalists, calls "state-sponsored hostage-taking."

Just horrible. May Alsu be reunited with her children and Putin unseated so all his hostages are one day free 🎉❤ 🙏
Free Assange
Hoping Alsu will be home with her family soon❤
😥 Dear Russian People... when you once leave Russia and are independent minded and love to speak your mind...and critic of Putin's Russia while outside of Russia... don't go back to your native country and expect a "heroes" welcome... Let your families, friends come and visit you if you're outside of Putin's Russia...as long as Putin is President... Stay Away...🙌
No one expected a hero's welcome in Russia. Also went back to her native town because her mother was sick and needed attention.
Just watch to reunite with her mother. That was amazing. Thank you President Biden.
And despite the examples of Alsu Kurmasheva and Evan Gershkovich, there are still MAGA politicians willing to do Putin's bidding. Vote those MAGA politicians out of office.
So terrible
This is way free speech is important, especially in America, because otherwise, this is what the rest of the world is like.
People take advantage of free speech that’s why things happen to them, No story is worth her life or anyone’s It’s mine boggling are they looking for the stories or the Fame ! Again, people take advantage of free speech don’t even know what the definition of it ! There’s other places in the world that don’t even let you have free speech ! Cause at the end Their governments have to do whatever it takes to get them out Like the USA 🇺🇸 And still people wanna complain and talk down on our country !
shes home!!
That's how it goes when ruthless dictators are not only permitted but encouraged to "lead" countries. The cycle of doom repeats; Stahleen, Moose-olini, Heetlar, XiXiPi, KJU, Shenko, Chump, etc., etc. And this cycle will never, ever, EVER be stopped. That's just the way it is.
Julian Assange would tell you another side of the Story,if he would be free and could speak to people of course....
@@hansdampf640He's still alive though, Navalny and many others however not so much. That's the fundamental difference between democracy and dictatorship. There you go.
How Americans can support Putin is beyond me.
Conservatives don’t support Putin. They don’t support the never ending war in Ukraine costing Americans hundreds of billions with no plan, while making domestic issues a secondary priority.
She was visiting her mother in Russia when authorities there confiscated her passports and jailed her. A good reason to be there,
What? Her going was just as foolish as going to North Korea.
This is outrageous: a U.S. journalist who is not affiliated in any capacity with the U.S. government, other than receiving U.S. citizenship, is branded a foreign, meaning non-Russian, “agent” and detained, while here in the U.S. we actually have foreign agents employed by foreign state security agencies, who operated under cover for years, and did not register as foreign agents with the DoJ, walk free well into retirement age and beyond.
"It's funded by the US but it's independent" 😂😂😂
its TRUTH - "the world HATES Truth" - WordOfGod
Kermasheva should be declared wrongfully detained.. Evan has a very powerful and influential employer, she doesn't
I am all for accurate reporting. I am also opposed to spreading inflammatory which is not based in fact.
She was incredibly foolish to go. Look what Putin did to Navalny.
Navalny was imprisoned for the same reason Jullian Assange wasn't he?
Oh wait Assange is charged with espionage by a country he doesn't live in
Pick one place or another, right now. America and Russia aren't getting along at this moment obviously 🫣
Gonzalo Lira, Peruvian-American journalist died in a Ukrainian prison for reporting the truth about what is happening in Ukraine
Can anyone explain why US taxpayers are funding a radio station in Europe?
Had the same question.
Very silly question. Russia is waging a propaganda war against the US, trying to undermine our democracy. It is a clear threat to our national security. The US has the right to defend itself by spreading truthful information in and about Russia. It doesn't cost much to maintain this operation.
She oughtn't have gone in the first place, it's not as though this couldn't have been foreseen.
Up next, the CBS profile of Gonzalo Lira. Oh no, wait...
Right after on RT, a Navalny documentary. Oh wait...
💔😪🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Why go to Russia when you're an American who has written about Ukraine ?
Exactly.
She wanted to visit her grandmother.
@CatsBestFinds59 Still, why go to Russia ? Her and her husband are educated. Knew of the Americans detained. ( Evan Gershkovich for one ) She wrote about people opposing the war in Ukraine. But she disregarded the danger. I don't understand especially in this case.
Why go to Ukraine when you have written the truth about the war?
Ask Gonzalo Lira. RIP
Why do Americans go to Russia with all these hostilities going on.... just seems like your asking for trouble
Exactly ! I do not understand !
Journalists think they will be safe and usually are. Putin and his lackeys like Trump change the rules.
She went to be with her Grandmother. Is that wrong ?
Why not report on the foreign journalists the USA is detaining?
@@nochepatada enlighten me, who might they be ?
I get it that Journalist have to share the stories of the world 🌎, but if you know that the country you are going to like Russia or any other place , why go ? Why put yourself in harms way? Why put your family in such pain and sadness? No Story is worth your life ! listen to the USA 🇺🇸 when they say it’s dangerous for Civilians News media to go it’s not worth it now look at her just for want for a story yeah right .
The irony of running this while Julian Assange, an Australian, is in jail awaiting espionage charges in America is disgusting propaganda
Julian turned our intelligence into a lawn sale. Tough luck.
@@steveconn like the "collateral damage" video? Or showing how the DNC fixed the primary so Hillary Clinton would win?
Wasn't Navalny imprisoned for reveal secrets of the rich and powerful too?
@@steveconnlike when he released emails showing how the DNC rigged the primary so Hillary would win?
Or Manning's "collateral damage"
Its strange how TH-cam keeps deleting my message about the video Manning released calked co.

@@steveconn or is it because he released emails showing how the DNC rigged the primary so Hillary would win?
The West is not infallible. Assange comes to mind.
Oyvey. These cases are not comparable. Pull yourself together.
