The colors of Neem Karoli Baba's love

Through the decades of 60’s and 70’s, in the Company Gardens at Nainital, one could always see the gardener who worked there, completely immersed in tending to the flowers growing in the garden. As though the flowers were his veneration, gardening his penance, and the garden his abode of penance. Completely devoted to the flowers, the Maliji (gardener) would see people getting closer to the flowers and call out, “Sir, don’t touch the flowers, just behold them. Once, someone questioned the mali (gardner) “I too work hard in my garden but the flowers in my garden don’t spring as well as your flowers do, what do you do?” The Mali then responded, “Friend, when you put in your mind, body and soul into the flowers, then the red flower will exude a red fragrance, the yellow flower a yellow fragrance, the blue a blue fragrance and the white a white fragrance.” Can the fragrance bear color? Red flower giving out red fragrance, yellow flower a yellow fragrance, the blue a blue fragrance and the white a white fragrance? Receiving this unusual response from the Mali (gardener) probably helped in remembering the conversation. But now, upon reflecting, it appears that the mali’s words had a depth no less than that of the Upanishads. When one completely immerses their mind, body, and soul into an act then the resulting experience could certainly become one beyond the senses. And this kind of total surrender is also the basis of absolute devotion. When such deep love in which everything can be surrendered forms the base of devotion, then the devotees expression of devotion naturally gets laced with perfect adornment and imagination. In that state of love, anything is possible. Colors can bear fragrance and fragrance can express colors too. Now imagine Maharaj, seated, surrounded by his devotees. In front of him there is a vessel and Maharaj is dipping the chunari ( scarfs) brought by the devotees to seek his blessings, into that vessel. Maharaj asks the devotee which color do you want your scarf to be colored? The devotee says red and Maharaj dips the scarf into the vessel and gives it back to the devotee colored in red. The devotee is thrilled as his desire was fulfilled by Maharaj. Then the next devotee comes forward and Maharaj asks which color he would like. The devotee requests a blue one and Maharaj dips his scarf in the same vessel and pulls out the devotee’s scarf dyed in blue and gives it back to him. Thus the devotees keep coming with their requests for their colors of desire to Maharaj and are elated and blessed to see them fulfilled through his grace. Every devotee has their own desire and their own choice of color and Maharaj is continuously fulfilling each desire from the same vessel of grace. One devotee submerged in devotion absorbed this leela as Maharaj looked at him and asked, “Why don’t you want to get your chunari (scarf) colored?” The devotee then moves closer to Maharaj and offers his chunari to maharaj. Maharaj asks him, “What color would you like?” and the devotee says “The color that is in this vessel.” “The color that is in this vessel?” Maharaj asked. Until now everyone asked for a particular color: red, yellow, blue, were all desires of these devotees. This devotee, however, desires the absolute color: this is like asking for God himself, through whose grace a color can be transformed into any other color. The desire for a particular color was a limited desire but asking for the absolute color was like asking God for God himself; an infinite desire. Joyfully, Maharaj takes the chunari from that devotee, dips it in the vessel, and draws it out. The chunari is white as it was but the difference is that now, it is filled with fragrance. This is the fragrance of love. The love of the devotee for the God. What then remains for him to ask? In finding you, I have found everything in the world, the entire earth as well as the sky. It is hard to explain an indescribable tale of love. Such is the joy of devotion. Such is the grace of the lord. Whether the desire is limited or limitless, grace fulfills it all. A soulful veneration to the guru.
