Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji) and Hanumanji: The Grace of Siddhis
Just like a mother is remembered while in pain, a father while in fear, God in moments of sorrow, and Hanuman when faced with trouble so the devotees remember Maharaj, an embodiment of father, mother, guru and friend to his seekers. For the devotees, Maharaj and Hanuman are one. Both are synonymous. You remember one, and the image of the other automatically appears. Behind the sense of oneness between Maharaj and Hanumanji there are opinions and differences of opinions. Opinions and differences of opinion are both welcome in the discussion centered around Maharaj and Hanuman, and when the mention is about Maharaj and Hanuman then the discussion is akin to a satsang. Satsang is an indisputable joy.
The basis of seeing Maharaj as Hanuman is this: during his period of sadhana in whichever form Maharaj came, whether as Lakshaman Das, Tikonia Baba, Handi Baba, or Tailaiya Baba, in all these forms he was connected with the path of devotion where the relationship between a devotee and god is like that of a master and servant. Indisputably, Hanuman is the greatest example of this relationship. And so, he is worshipped for this.
Through Maharaj many cities and several locations became home to numerous temples of Hanuman. He even consecrated Hanuman in the homes of many devotees. His Love for listening to the Ramayan and specially the Sundar Kand, and reciting Hanuman Chalisa and inspiring everyone to read it and always staying immersed in the name of Ram. All of this makes Maharaj one with Hanuman.
One perspective takes us even further from the path of bhakti to beyond into a deeper level where the relationship between Maharaj and hanuman becomes indistinguishable and morphed into one, thus allowing the devotees to see him as Hanuman. There are many such leelas of Maharaj where he came in the form of Hanuman before his devotees. Form of Hanuman meaning embodying the qualities of Hanuman. Watching the leela before them, the devotees would suddenly see him no different from Hanuman. There have been many instances where Maharaj addresses himself as Hanuman. It so happened, that a narrator of Ramayan had come to narrate Ramayan to Maharaj. He asked Maharaj, “Maharaj, where should I start narrating from?” Maharaj says, “From that point where I was talking to Vibhishan”. “From there. When I was talking to vibhishan from there!” Everybody knows that in Lanka Hanumanji was talking to Vibhishan. Similarly, in Kainchi there were discussions going on about the construction of the temple and suddenly Maharaj in the middle of the conversation said, “You think I am hoarding property? I am becoming a landowner? I have no such attachments. I can leave everything behind just like I left Lanka.” It was Hanumanji who had left Lanka after setting it ablaze. These are some instances where Maharaji addressed himself as Hanuman. There is also another instance where Maharaj was surrounded by his devotees when a little girl starts crying and upon being asked why, shares that she just saw Ram and Sita inside Maharajji’s chest and continued to describe details of the vision of Ram and Sita, and especially describing Sita’s clothes in detail. Maharaj kept listening and did not say a word. Like Pawan Sut Hanuman (Son of the wind God) Maharaj would always be on the move. It would appear that it is not in his nature to stay in one place. You would hear about him being in Vrindavan one day and find him in Nainital the very next day, and then in Delhi and after that in Agra in just a matter of days. He would be visiting a devotee in one home and then leave to visit another. Even when he was in one place like a home he would be moving from one room to another. Sometimes outside, sometimes inside the house. And even when sitting in his takht his body would be in a constant state of motion. Maharajji was heavy bodied just like Hanumanji. He had long arms that he would keep shifting in different postures. His posture and facial gestures were continuously changing. Sometimes he was sitting , sometimes he was in a half supine state. His attention was somewhere one moment, and then somewhere else. Not still for even a moment, just like the wind. In fact, Maharaj would also say, “I am like the wind. No one will be able to hold me. A saint staying long in one place is trouble.” Rightly said, wandering saint and flowing water. Hanumanji is like a bridge who works to connect two opposite ends. Be it connecting Sughreev to Ram, or Vibhishan to Ram, or Sita to Ram. He brings together. Similarly, Maharaj too is established like a bridge for his devotees working towards meeting the two opposite ends. Two ends like peace and turmoil, concern and relaxation, sorrow and joy, belief and doubt, devotion and separation. The devotees are at one end and at the other end are their expectations and with his presence, Maharaj bridges these two ends.
