This is impressive work, the quality on this one is outstanding! I really want to emphasize this, the effort of rebuilding and then conserving it the proper way is rare to find nowadays! Well done, Dave!
Eastern European here, I just want to say this: my grandpa used to be the head of a hospital wing, (so a local 'important head') and had to wait for aaages to get his "Zhiguli" (Lada) and he just *cherished* the car. Its interiors looked like nothing in the video shown in this video. The seats were much simpler. But the man cared for his car, and was it not for his nephew totaling the vehicle, then today it would have been a piece of retro art.
I wish I could relate to your sweet memories, lol, I hated my dad's Lada in Russia in the 00's over 10 hour road trips. I'd usually get carsick and my dad never made the trips fun lol. When I sat in my uncle's Peugeot 307 it was like day and night. I would however get a lada and modify it tastefully like this gentleman here after importing it to the US.
I think this is my favourite of all your videos, brilliant! He’s never going to stop driving like a hooligan is he 😆. By the way you were right Jonny, the seats are Alfa 156. I’ve used them a few times in Pandas, or 147, they’re cheap as chips, which is an important factor when modding budget cars.
@Flynn Spunks There were made more than 1000 mods in fiat's construction for survival on hard soviet off-roads, and the engine was completely new, with overhead camshaft. Releasing of restyled "lada 1200", also known as VAZ-2107 was continued until 2005.
There have been many cheap cars over time like Renault 4s, 2Cvs 127s etc but the ladas were cheapest, all my uncles ended up with them bit like Skidders nowadays.
Seeing that Escort Mk2 brings back some memories. My father bought an Escort Mk2 in 1978. Not quite sure what he had before but it also was a Ford. I was born in 74 so buying a new car felt like a big deal to me. I later learned to drive on an Escort Mk4. I would love to get my hands on either a Mk2 or a Mk4, both cars will always have a special place in my heart.
We had Lada sedans and Nivas here in Canada too, but they've pretty much all succumbed to the rusties. Seeing one modded like this is pretty cool, especially to such a high standard. Only thing I would change would be to bring the ride height up a smidge so it looks more sleeper.

Johnny, really do love your adventures….. so up my street, as a man of your young age I relate to it all, lived my life with all these types of car, spent many a day in similar garages, barns, scrap yards etc…… built sleepers, supercars, race cars etc…. Just awesome! I have a love for classic cars and even the little underdogs that nobody ever paid attention to. That 2101 is stunning to look at, eargasmic to hear and I bet it's a pure thrill to toss around a corner. Just awesome. I would love to see more of that Granada too. She's a looker! Brilliant episode, a neighbour in the 70's bought a brand new Lada pretty much the same colour, it was around £1700 on the road, never liked it but I'd have this one! Everything about these videos and the barn finds is done superbly, you just can't beat the Late brake show!
Super nostalgic Johnny. 😀 My day had three of these back in the seventies. As you said they were cheap and all my dad could afford but we thought we were privilliged having a new family car. They were tough, just worked and easy to fix (with the supplied toolkit)! I inherited his second car as a student when he bought his third and I ragged it to to death for a couple of years until I graduated. Great to see how this sleeper has been done keeping it looking as factory as it can. Fab video. 👍👍
Im from eastern europe and my grandparents had the exact model and colour, i have very distand memories of when i was around 1-2 sitting in the front and being driven around. Then from what I remember being told it got too coroded for use. This was a lovely watch, very beautiful build, what a great video!
First of all, no car should be scrapped, everything can be repaired no matter what, Always loved the lada, totally underrated car. They remind me of the fiat mirafiori my mate had years ago. Brilliant job this. Totally Love it.
Great show! BadAzz Soviet sleeper! Props to the builder! By the way that color name in Russian is Ochre (ocher color). I've got exactly same car in almost original spec, except for been lowered by 35mm and using skinny 13 inch wheels with a white side walls, everything else bone stock as it was when my car came out back in 1982 and its done only 39 thousand km from new
I really love the discussion part of the video. You both are properly passionate about the mechanics and the driving dynamics aspects. Great to watch it as a former East-European individual, since I have born and been raised in Hungary during early 80's. So I have seen these cars as kid.
Brilliant video! Ive used Retroford parts on my zetec mk1 and they are superb. Dave does great work and what a workshop, you could do a video just on that and I'd be drooling!! He always builds iconic cars and this Lads is no different. Great work Johnny. A 10/10 video
I see moders building cars all the time and they throw thousands and all the best stuff at it, but This guy has built something beautiful with this lada and all the engineering side of it is fascinating! A true car guy with tonnes of skill and talent... I would rather have that Lada over most stuff i see getting done nowadays! really gorgeous looking car and looks incredibly fun to drive it sideways! grand job Dave!
Only just catching up on this vid. Really liked it. Sleepers are always cool, and you don't get much sleepier than a Lada. Love Dave's comment "If it's not Ford I don't really know" 😁. Great stuff 👉👉👉. Having said all that, I'm glad I watched all of this, just for a glimpse of that beautiful Granada ❤❤❤. Thanks Jonny. 😎
There's just something about small boxy cars with round headlights that I love. I'm an EV fan (and a fan of sleepers) but I wouldn't change a thing about this build! Great work Dave.
Great video, I’m a huge Lada fan, my first car was a Lada Riva, it’s great to see a classic right hand drive 2101 restored to such a high standard, the colour is even close to an original factory colour of the time. I would have preferred to see it restored to original factory specification, with the standard engine and wheels, but then I am a hopeless purist.
I had a few Ladas back in the day. A very underrated motor, especially the 1600. I would gladly buy another one today if they were still available at sensible money!
I worked at a Lada dealership in the late 70's and we sold loads of them ! IF they were serviced correctly and looked after, they were a bloody good car for the price. I remember they were imported with horrible Russian cross ply tyres which we removed and replaced with radials before they were sold. And that big tool kit in a leather satchel in the boot plus the owners handbook which was more like a Haynes manual ! What British car had all that !!
@@johnfellows2867 yes John, it was the lack of servicing that beat them. Because they were so cheap they were treated badly. The worst fault was not resetting the timing chain tensioner.
I was living in Odessa, Ukraine in 2020. Saw a few really beautiful and well treated ladas out there, People are putting a lot of love into them. Had some pleasant pidgin English/pidgin Russian conversations with their owners, too Personally I think they're actually pretty elegant, good looking cars!
I have a friend who switched the Lancia Delta HF Integrale 4WD technic to Lada 2101. That happened already in the end of 90's. On that time it was the only known 4WD Lada on the roads. He got the parts from scrapped rally car and decided to do a little experiment. Eventually he was using the car for few years before selling it.
I wondered what happened to that bonkers green escort! I only saw this once, at the santa pod retro show in i think 2008? I remember being fascinated by the singleminded focus of it. Stickers for headlights, etc. Makes a lot more sense now, seeing this! He's a very talented builder!
I learned to drive in one just like this in Kyiv, Ukraine. And by that I mean it was the same exact colour. But it had 13" wheels, purely symbolic brakes, and a 1.2 litre engine that mostly converted petrol into noise. The local market name was Lada 2101 (and its variants 21011, 21013).
I’m leaving in the area where you can see few of them in relatively good condition. In Russia we call this model “Kopeika”. But you have done really good job making it outstanding. Really well done!
Lucky find. I recall a neighbour buying a new Lada in the early 80s, regularly washed it on a weekend, and, put his hand through the front wing. It had rusted through in a handful of years.
In Russia for those RWD LADAs the most common type of swap is BMW E30 swap. They use both front and rear undercarriage and motor. More light swap is engine only - there is an 16 valve LADA engine(similar to zetec) that might give something close to 200hp after rebuild.

So cool this car. So beautiful! Massive job, well done! I wish I never sold my Lada back in 1992. I drove one for about two years., until it completely fell apart from rust. They're collector items right now.
Had a chance to travel to Ethiopia before covid and fell in love with Lada. All the taxis are Ladas. Would love to rebuild one. Enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Everyone seems to say 'the worst car...' but, as said in the video, it traces its roots back to the Fiat 124 which was an example of cutting edge tech on it introduction - and even to this day is an impressive bit of kit. OK, Lada made the engineering simpler...
Always saying how badly you did, try to find materials on the topic and prepare carefully. In Lada, many elements were reinforced, the suspension was changed for the better, the clutch and gearbox synchronizers were strengthened. there are documents that confirm that Soviet engineers gave an unsatisfactory assessment of many parts of the car, but they needed a cheap car, so they were looking for compromises
I LOVE the sound of those ITBs!! I had a '72 Toyota Carina with a 2TC hemi (1.6L), and a pair of Weber DCOE 40 side-drafts, and it sounded identical to that Cosworth. It dyno'd around 165 hp. which was plenty for the 1750 lb. Carina back in the mid-1980's! Nice work integrating all that into the Lada!😄👍👍 *EDIT:* That launch at 11:58 is absolute music to my ears!!🥰 I miss my Carina!🥲

Absolutely amazing. I have to say I've always found these style of your shows incredible. The creativity and passion that goes into projects like these. It's insprising! Wonderfully presented in a knowledgeable way. Love it, please do more like this!

Great Video ! Love the Lada , the owner is a great guy , real old Skool , thank you , I really enjoyed this . Bobby 55 year old London UK .
Amazing car! And such a clean build. Colour is also on point and I like the contrast with the wheels. Well done indeed.
More people need to make cars like this. It's so cool.
I almost made the first fiesta cosworth in my teens. I bought a MK2 motorsport fiesta one of 250, it was rapid and my project was too drop a Escort Cosworth engine into it. Me and my father fell out for many reasons and one day i witnessed him having my first car crushed on the back of a truck out of spite. That day was good enough reason to wash my hands of him especially for killing my baby beast.
There’s nothing I don’t like about what Dave’s build has achieved. It’s absolutely spot on in every respect. Well done pal 👍🤩

Fiat 124
....just saying. : )
Very fun car. You could park it next to a Lambo and you’d still have the more interesting car. Also, I bet it is a ton more fun to drive cause you can actually use all of the power without disappearing into a hedge.
It's a Fiat 124.
@@francis8062 Albeit a heavily modified one by Lada for the Soviet market.
it is cheaper and easier not to change the engine, but to install the turbine on the Lada engine
That’s a great sleeper, stunning craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing with us Johnny!
Ladas are actually pretty cool I always liked them even back then. Classic minimal looks and potential for tuning
Ladas are shit... fiat 124 was a great car...
@Flynn Spunks There were made more than 1000 mods in fiat's construction for survival on hard soviet off-roads, and the engine was completely new, with overhead camshaft. Releasing of restyled "lada 1200", also known as VAZ-2107 was continued until 2005.
@Flynn Spunks OFC I know it man. But in the eastern block that was what you got, not the Fiat.
There have been many cheap cars over time like Renault 4s, 2Cvs 127s etc but the ladas were cheapest, all my uncles ended up with them bit like Skidders nowadays.
it is cheaper and easier not to change the engine, but to install the turbine on the Lada engine

Happy to let the owners tell their stories. After all, they know it best!
It's nice to see an old classic that never turned head's on the street, but this is one definitely worth a smile
There is so much skill and knowledge tucked away in Britain's tiny workshops.
We had Lada sedans and Nivas here in Canada too, but they've pretty much all succumbed to the rusties. Seeing one modded like this is pretty cool, especially to such a high standard. Only thing I would change would be to bring the ride height up a smidge so it looks more sleeper.
How can you not love this car, next project should be an old Skoda with the rear engine.

I love the classic look of that Lada with a that color and a arm rest😱!
I just love it.
I saw this car at a car show in Market Harborough back in 2018 and it looked like a brand new car, it was mint, the attention to detail was astonishing, I had a chat with the owner and he talked me through all it's bits, nice guy and a top notch car.
That thing is as cool as a polar bear's plums, restomods are absolutely up my street. Nice to see it being properly driven too. That MK1 Granada is stunning too!
Oh Wow , I Loved this Car , Hey Jonny tell you what . That Viaduct backdrop mate was stunning !! 👍👍
Absolutely amazing build, I remember seeing this on speed hunters when I got my lada 2101, coincidentally in the same color. Huge inspiration for my build.
My late dad and uncle used to own Lada's back in Jamaica I love them to this day great content
Ok Mr Smith. How you keep making better content on every episode is beyond me. This is by far the coolest car I’ve ever seen. And yes, I’m a huge Riva & Niva fan.
Johnny, really do love your adventures….. so up my street, as a man of your young age I relate to it all, lived my life with all these types of car, spent many a day in similar garages, barns, scrap yards etc…… built sleepers, supercars, race cars etc…. This Lada is superb… a real credit…Keep your vids coming 👍🍺👍🍺👍🍺👍
Thank you Tim. So chuffed you liked the episode.
Loving the content and what a build! Imagine the skills of this guy and not only that, the sheer luck of stumbling over a prototype cosworth engine!
This is without a doubt one of the best episodes of Late Brake Show I've ever seen. What a great car. And what a top bloke. Absolutely, blooming brilliant. 👍👍👍
This was so so good to watch, I had a smile on my face the whole time. So glad this popped up on my YT feed. The car, the shop, all the car interior+exterior shots. just perfect⭐

I wish Dave all the best to get that blue Cortina beauty together. I'm a lover of American V8 iron, but these little buggers are pretty sweet too! Excellent work and fabrication. A true lover of his craft and it shows.
Find a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life. Livin' the dream.
Fab video. 👍👍
Most of them were also supplied with a cranking handle & a small hole in the front bumper incase the battery died 🤣
@@pgtips9236 ...and an inspection lamp! Hedy days! 😂
What I like about such projects is that you probably won't find another car like that in the UK, very unique! 👍
I've got exactly same car in almost original spec, except for been lowered by 35mm and using skinny 13 inch wheels with a white side walls, everything else bone stock as it was when my car came out back in 1982 and its done only 39 thousand km from new
This is one of the coolest builds I’ve ever seen. Truly inspirational
I really love the discussion part of the video. You both are properly passionate about the mechanics and the driving dynamics aspects. Great to watch it as a former East-European individual, since I have born and been raised in Hungary during early 80's. So I have seen these cars as kid.
I always loved these cars. A class mate had one and we drove to school in it for a year. Good memories. What a wonderful project very well done!

There's just something about small boxy cars with round headlights that I love. I'm an EV fan (and a fan of sleepers) but I wouldn't change a thing about this build! Great work Dave.
The talent of these guys never fails to astound me.
Fantastic build, absolutely love it.
This so much cooler than a G Wagon or Lamborghini! So awesome
And more fun to drive.
I had a few Ladas back in the day. A very underrated motor, especially the 1600. I would gladly buy another one today if they were still available at sensible money!
I worked at a Lada dealership in the late 70's and we sold loads of them ! IF they were serviced correctly and looked after, they
were a bloody good car for the price. I remember they were imported with horrible Russian cross ply tyres which we removed
and replaced with radials before they were sold. And that big tool kit in a leather satchel in the boot plus the owners handbook
which was more like a Haynes manual ! What British car had all that !!
@@johnfellows2867 yes John, it was the lack of servicing that beat them. Because they were so cheap they were treated badly. The worst fault was not resetting the timing chain tensioner.

Personally I think they're actually pretty elegant, good looking cars!
20:43 > just love that, breaking traction moment.
Honestly one of my favourite modified cars ever - even with a weird fascination with Soviet Bloc cars, this is nothing short of spectacular.
Originally were the 1960s Fiat 124 tooling and body pressings purchased by Lada when Fiat finished production.
I haven't laughed so much at a car's description in ages - thank you!
Cool British eccentric design and build😎. Long may it continue 👍

I’m leaving in the area where you can see few of them in relatively good condition. In Russia we call this model “Kopeika”. But you have done really good job making it outstanding.
Really well done!
Funny, this reminds me of the one and only Lotus Lada that was made. I think it was on topgear or fifth gear. Just plain awesome!
That one in my opinion was even more epic as they left the original engine

Lucky find. I recall a neighbour buying a new Lada in the early 80s, regularly washed it on a weekend, and, put his hand through the front wing. It had rusted through in a handful of years.
My grandfather had the same Lada model only in white. Green sticky upholstery and everything. I loved that little car. Started on first in deep snow.
In Russia for those RWD LADAs the most common type of swap is BMW E30 swap. They use both front and rear undercarriage and motor. More light swap is engine only - there is an 16 valve LADA engine(similar to zetec) that might give something close to 200hp after rebuild.

Everyone seems to say 'the worst car...' but, as said in the video, it traces its roots back to the Fiat 124 which was an example of cutting edge tech on it introduction - and even to this day is an impressive bit of kit. OK, Lada made the engineering simpler...
True. It was more the Lada build quality, rather than car design.
Which one to watch first? this or Harrys garage. This won.
Harry is a dude, but you made the right decision...
