    I also have Ponca blackberries from bare root plugs...I started with 10 and 7 have survived their first leaf last year.
    Very slow to do much of anything.. I've grown PrimeArk 45's and Encore Raspberries and they thrived..not the Ponca's..they'll be fine just very slow to get going.

    Glad you got pense to do something. My experience with them is you place an order and they send whatever they want.

    You need to use the hoe around the plants, the weeds sufocate the roots of your plants and water them

      @@michaelmosley254 the only way I know of is to contact a university with a blackberry program like Arkansas State or Louisiana State and send them a sample to DNA test. Check with your County agent and see if they may know another way.

    I planted 3 bare root Ponca blackberries this spring and they are still just sitting there with very little growth. Watered and fertilized them all summer. Wondering if this variety is going to be finicky to grow? They're supposed to be a really good tasting blackberry. Wondering what is your honest opinion of them is so far?

      Mine sat dormant for several months the when they started to grow you could almost see the difference from day to day. Give them some time. Theyare worth it.

      Update. The flavor of these Ponca are amazing when left to fully ripen. That’s the key to any berry. Just because it’s black doesn’t mean it’s ripe. Cup your hand under the berry and give gentle top pressure with your thumb. If it doesn’t fall off in your hand it’s not ready. Never pull the berry off. All you will get is sour berries that aren’t ripe. Also when the droplets swell oversized and get dull instead of shiny it’s almost too late. Pick those and eat on the way back to the house. Amazing.

    I have the same thing with my tissue culture Prime Ark Freedoms. In theory they should all do close to the same since they are supposed to be cultured from prime examples of any given cultivar. Im guessing companies for a variety of reasons dont always use the best examples for tissue cultures.

    If I were growing my Ponca berries on my fence, could I direct the stalk to go lateral alongside the fence instead of pinching the top off?

    • @beedathomesteadapiary9537
      @beedathomesteadapiary9537  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes but you would get less lateral growth and that's where most of you fruit will come from

    If you were to pinch off the buds when the cane is lower, like 2-3 ft instead of waiting for them to get 4 ft tall, you will get same growth at a lower height and easier to pick berries....

      This is true but i like them this way. I am the only one picking and not having any problems reaching them yet
