This will make the frame edges have less splinters and make the door seal better. I really like your Dutch door concept!
The door is looking great. You have the results of over 50 years of hard work. I’ve been retired for 10 years and I’m still cleaning up. Currant projects included. It never ends, Thank God.
When I woke up on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst, the pain was a 10. And they got me up to walk. I couldn’t move my leg, and they moved it across the bed, and they helped me up and I walked across the room and back. The next day when they got me up to walk, I was able to move my leg across the bed, and I could see that it was getting better. It’s been over twenty-five years, and it was the best thing I ever did. It takes a couple months to get back to normal. You will be glad you did it.
@@kenskarpentry I had hernia surgery and they shot me with lanacane and I had abslutetly no pain, I never had to use pain killer. My was kney surger was 23 years ago no telling what improvements they have made. You could ask the doctor.
Ken, you most likely will be able to walk out of the hospital almost right away (barring any complications, God forbid!), because when my Mom who is 80 years old had a total hip replacement, she went home the next day using a walker. She was able to put half of her weight (she's not overweight at all) on the leg when using the walker to walk. And within a few weeks, she was able to walk without the walker. And, she said there wasn't very much pain. She just took extra-strength Tylenol for a few days immediately after the surgery. She's doing great. Hopefully, this will be your experience, too (except with your knee, of course!! LOL).

Wagon looking great. Had my right knee replaced in 2018, joint was bone one bone for 25 years. I worked on concrete surfaces and ladders continuously during that time. I was retired and 68 years old when it was done. Best thing I ever did. No pain in that knee since. I was up walking 1 hour after the surgery and they had me step up 2 stairs. Elected to stay overnight at Hospital out of caution. Used a walker for about 3 weeks after I got home. Walked as much as I could to rebuild leg strength during those three weeks. One thing to check after you are all healed is both of your leg lengths. (My right gained 5/8" which is corrected by adding to the sole of the left shoe, can also be done by a build up inside shoe. Difference can lead to hip problems.) Talk to your surgeon about forgoing problem. Good luck.

Had a knee replacement 6 years ago the PT prior to the surgery is very important also the PT after that is key to being pain free after the surgery. I have no issues with my replacement knee now best thing I ever did. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. All the best
I can relate very well with you Ken. My left knee meniscus is gone and I have an MRI on to determine what the next step is on the 25th. I hope they decide to do the replacement. I'm tired of living in pain. Getting old hasn't been easy.
My mother had both knees and both hips replaced. Last one when she was in her early 80's. I think you will find it is the best thing you have done in a while. She said, on the first one, a knee, she wishes she had done it sooner. You are a tough Vermonter, so you will survive it great. Keep up the great videos. God Bless.

Had my knee replaced June 18th. Surgery at 7:00 am & walked out at 12 noon. As I've mentioned before, stay up on your meds & therapy. Especially your therapy at home. Good luck & I love the color scheme. God Bless you.

Ken, too bad you can’t keep on your project until it is done, was hoping you could wait until winter when you wouldn’t be working because of weather. I’m a pack rat Ken, and stink at organizing. I save everything, bad habit I picked up from my otherwise wonderful Dad.
I have had a knee and a hip done in the last four years. Both have turned out great. I am older than you and found that doing the PT exercises religiously before and after are the keys to successful recovery. After the knee I was golfing in 6 weeks. Hip took a little longer. Stay active and follow the doctors orders and you will be good to go. Get some foam pads so you can kneel down when you work. Good luck with the surgery.
Great series of videos. When skinning the door frame I find it helpful to make the outer dimensions about 1/8 inch greater on all fours sides. Once the glue has dried I then use a flush cut router bit for a perfect match to the underlying frame. Kind Regards. Craig
Thanks. I think that would be great. My problem is I’m not set up with a router to do that so I’m going to use my belt sander and go around. I think I will take it down probably slower than what a router would do. Ha ha maybe that’s an opportunity to go buy a new tool.
I will hit my 4 year Total Knee Replacement anneversary on Oct 23. Ken, you will be in pain after wards for weeks. So be sure to take and monitor your medications. And do your P.T. afterwards. One suggestion I have is to start now and work on increasing your upper body strength, you will need it all the time and be glad you did. A couple of items you need are a Walker, Crutches and know how to use them, maybe a cane, Gait belt for pt, a Wedge pillow for elvating your leg, a small soccer ball size ball also for pt. And if you have a wood rocking chair that you can set in to rock using your new knee, it keeps it moving and helps regain your Range Of Motion. If your bedroom is upstairs, try to have a 2nd walker for upstairs or have someone carry yours when you go up and down. I barrowed a neighbors because I live alone. You will need ice packs for your knee, I made mine with 3 cups of water, 1 cup of rubbing alcohol poured into a 1 gal zip lock bag and double bag with a second one, and freeze. Make 3 or 4 of these. They wont freeze they just get slushy, and feel GREAT. Also I purchased on Amazon a Cryo/Cuff Cooler, it is a knee brace style wrap that you put on your knee and fill with cold water from a jug. The cuff tightens up when filled and it feels soooo goood. And when it warms you place the jug on the floor and let it drain back into the jug, then swirl it around and then lift the jug up and let the cuff refill. Its easy to use. They used these at my Doctors PT location. Some of these items Insurance may or may not be covered by insurance. The Cryo/Cuff was around $105. Good luck

Hey Ken I’m 64 and just had my 2nd complete knee surgery 1 yr ago this past June ( rt knee) I had the left knee done 2 yrs ago this past June . I highly recommend Pre-Op PT my doctor suggested it and I did 4-6 wks of it Then followed up with 10 weeks post op PT I had no pain with either surgery . Slight discomfort at worse Took only Extra Strength Tylenol with both . Make sure to do the exercises they will provide to you and ICE is your friend . Also, look at your improvement in 2 week stages it helps with the mental part of the recovery don’t get discouraged on any bad day you may or may not encounter . You’ll do great I’m sure you’re a healthy , good shape gentleman . Sending along prayers for a speedy and full recovery Looking forward to hearing about your progress !🙏🙏
I had my knee replacement surgery on March 4 in the Spring this year. My knee was bone on bone for my right knee. My wife had her left knee surgery on Nov. 6 last year. Robotic surgery usually has a faster recovery. My surgery was "hands on" in Calgary, Alberta. . . . the Vardo is coming along nicely. Your yard and garage cleanup is progressing nicely. Keep us posted about your surgery.
I don’t mind a short video. It’s nice to see any progress at all, and I’m excited to see the next steps for the vardo. I’m interested to see how you’re going to insulate everything. Is it going to be a year round traveling residence or just a summer vacation home? I can just see it being pulled into a traveler’s camp ground. It will certainly turn heads, because it’s so unique. Cleaning up is a PITA (pain in the @$$) on a good day. I will strongly recommend that you concentrate on getting the things that are outside redded up first. (Yes, “redd” is a word. I’ve even found it in Webster’s dictionary.) After all, you can clean up the garage while watching the snow falling outside through the windows. Your tools will probably be better off under a roof, too.
I've had both knees done a few years ago....what a relief from pain and sadly unable to get on my knees only can when wear good knee pads!!!! Praise God for his care and provision. By the chop saw....a good place for a plastic 30 gal. trash can!!!!!!
Seems like your creativity was stifled mostly building similar garages for 30 years. Sure is coming out now!!! Don't forget to water the flowers in the box ;) Sounds like typical medical insurance stuff. Doctor says you need a knee replacement, insurance forces you to do cortisone shots first and wait months even though the doctor knows it won't help and when it doesn't you get an appointment for knee replacement.
I had my right knee replaced about 8 years ago so things may have changed. I had the operation and spent 5 days in the hospital. Then was home for over a month before I couldn't stand it and went to my building to do lightweight easy things. During that time I was going to physical therapy and doing stretches at home.
In the early days after surgery, use an ice water wrap to ease the pain. the doctor should know about a circulation system that pumps cold water from the Ice water slurry to the wrap around your knee. It helps a great deal.

Hi Ken. We enjoy your videos! After your surgery you will feel pain; HOWEVER, it is totally different from the pain you are now experiencing. Also, instead of your knee pain getting worse each day, it will get better. Pain medication will be your best friend - don't skip any doses. This advice comes from both me & my husband -- together we have had 4 knee replacements.
FYI, Festool makes a foam cutting blade for a Jigsaw. Despite it’s expensive name, it is quite reasonable. The huge benefits is a smooth and mess free cut.
The ones I purchased have a Bosch label on the package .They look like one of those fancy wavy bladed kitchen knives... I have some for my sawzall and jigsaw... Caution these blades slice human flesh like a hot knife through warm butter... Works great for cardboard, leather, rubber and foam rubber also
Great project so far. Suggestion would be to ask the docs about PT before surgery because a bit of strength will help with lateral stability (side to side) and a quicker return to normal afterward. It may be as simple as sitting on a stool and leg bending with some added weight. (couple of pounds) My son did his with 2 soup cans in a bag that just hung from his ankle. IOW, no need for anything fancy. Just do it 2-3 times a day for a few minutes. BTW, I believe one of those tall bar stools you made is about the right height!
@@kenskarpentry we ALL want to be in better shape, right? The PT is more about the muscles around the knee because of how they will stretch things while installing the new parts. BTW, also look into some of those sneakers that don't need to be tied. (slip-on) You can get a better list of those small things from the doc.
I have had one total knee replacement about 9 nine years ago. The best advise I can give you is....do the rehab exercises. Keep the knee moving and I know it will hurt, but it will get better.
I had my left knee done 2 years ago. Came home same day as the surgery, started therapy the next day. Therapy wasn't pleasant but I was pushing myself also. Listen to your therapist and do everything. You have to meet a certain range of motion. I got through it real good. There was a lady there on her second attempt and she walked with a cane. Her Husband said she has zero pain tolerance and wasn't going along with the program. If she didn't meet her range of motion criteria this time around she will be to healed and would need a cane probablly the rest of her life. It really wasn't all that bad. Just a pain.
Hi Ken. I'm sure you've heard every story, good and bad, about knee replacement. Since it's all new to you, I'm sure it causes you deep concern and fear of the unknown. I've been in your shoes and was scared and not too sure that I wanted to proceed. Although it's considered a big surgery, it's so commonplace that the success rate is extremely high. I went into my first replacement surgery having a left hip and a right knee replaced the same day. It was a bit of a struggle afterwards but they had me up and walking around with a walker the very same day and I went home the following day. Yes, it's a bit painful in the very early stages of recovery but it gets better each and every day. I personally didn't need any pain medication but everyone is different. But a funny thing begins to happen. Yes, you have a bit of pain from the surgery, but you also begin to realize that your knee itself doesn't hurt anymore. That's good news when you realize it. I may have shared this with you before but there's a few things you can do at home that will make your recovery easier. First, you'll be spending a fair amount of time in a recliner....it's just the way it is. For active guys like us, it's not what we're used to but it's something you must do. Get out into your workshop and build a platform to put the recliner on. I made mine about 7 inches tall and it helps you immensely to get in and out of the chair. Make it just big enough to sit the chair on and add some safety pieces so the chair doesn't slide around on the platform. You'll thank yourself for making it. Also, I went and bought a toilet seat extension which is a round booster that attaches to the bowl. No holes to drill or anything but it raises the seat area about 6 inches or so. You would be surprised how non stressful it is on your wound when sitting and standing. Then just one last piece of advice. When you're sitting or lying down and you begin to feel a bathroom urge, get moving immediately because it's takes a lot longer to get there than normal. You'll be glad you did. Then, therapy. I can't stress enough how important it is. Don't blow off the home therapy. Do the exercises as they outline and don't short cut it. You'll be good as new before you know it. I've had 7 various joint replacements and each one was amazingly successful and recovery went better than expected. You'll enjoy the same results. The stories about how long a new joint will last are all baloney. They last forever. My surgeon told me that unless I begin playing pro football, or take up skydiving, he'll never see me again for the same joint. That's more good news. So how successful is joint replacement surgery? Now, at 75 years of age, I can work on my hobby cars doing anything necessary, do anything at all around the house, climb ladders, lay under the sink, throw the football around with my grandson and easily run out to catch a pass. Most recently I had both shoulders replaced and can again throw a football 55 yards. Look forward to more than a replacement...look forward to being restored. Don't worry...it's just a scratch. Ken, I know youre hurting. We are similar in age, and my knees hurt too. Have you thought about just selling it with an unfinished interior? Let the new owner finish the interior to their liking. Sometimes thats what new owners want. And your profits may be maximized by minimizing your expenses now. Then sit back and rest a bit, and get ready for a year long recovery. The good news is you’re close to 200.
I had my left knee replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago and my right knee replaced 6 months ago. Make sure you stay on top of your pain meds set your alarm to take them on time it will help a lot. It takes time for your knee to heal so don’t try to rush it. I think by six months out my new knees felt great.
Hi Ken, regarding your knee surgery just remember to take meds as prescribed and do the physical therapy with the therapist AS WELL AS AT HOME. This January will be 6 years from my knee replacement. In those 6 years I’ve had 2 pretty bad experiences with inflammation. 1 was a really bad experience. The swelling came out of no where, really unexpected time. I wasn’t doing anything strenuous to have caused it. Other times just some slight aches and pains to the replaced knee. Overall, I can’t complain. Any aches and pains I’ve had after the surgery have been a lot better than the severe pain I endured BEFORE the knee replacement. I will pray for you to have a better experience and speedy recovery.

Those doctors are jacking you around. Look how much time they’ve wasted passing you around. You could have been on the long road to recovery at this point. You’ll be glad you only have two knees to replace.
Doors swinging out are common on trailers and RVs. Something about usable space in the interior. That way when the bear leans against the door less likely to open inward.
Just a quick question? Do you ever use biscuits or dowels for strength when building those frames? I had very good luck with the dowels but not so much with the biscuits.

I will hit my 4 year Total Knee Replacement anneversary on Oct 23. Ken, you will be in pain after wards for weeks. So be sure to take and monitor your medications. And do your P.T. afterwards. One suggestion I have is to start now and work on increasing your upper body strength, you will need it all the time and be glad you did. A couple of items you need are a Walker, Crutches and know how to use them, maybe a cane, Gait belt for pt, a Wedge pillow for elvating your leg, a small soccer ball size ball also for pt. And if you have a wood rocking chair that you can set in to rock using your new knee, it keeps it moving and helps regain your Range Of Motion. If your bedroom is upstairs, try to have a 2nd walker for upstairs or have someone carry yours when you go up and down. I barrowed a neighbors because I live alone. You will need ice packs for your knee, I made mine with 3 cups of water, 1 cup of rubbing alcohol poured into a 1 gal zip lock bag and double bag with a second one, and freeze. Make 3 or 4 of these. They wont freeze they just get slushy, and feel GREAT. Also I purchased on Amazon a Cryo/Cuff Cooler, it is a knee brace style wrap that you put on your knee and fill with cold water from a jug. The cuff tightens up when filled and it feels soooo goood. And when it warms you place the jug on the floor and let it drain back into the jug, then swirl it around and then lift the jug up and let the cuff refill. Its easy to use. They used these at my Doctors PT location. Some of these items Insurance may or may not be covered by insurance. The Cryo/Cuff was around $105. Good luck

Hey Ken I’m 64 and just had my 2nd complete knee surgery 1 yr ago this past June ( rt knee) I had the left knee done 2 yrs ago this past June . I highly recommend Pre-Op PT my doctor suggested it and I did 4-6 wks of it Then followed up with 10 weeks post op PT I had no pain with either surgery . Slight discomfort at worse Took only Extra Strength Tylenol with both . Make sure to do the exercises they will provide to you and ICE is your friend . Also, look at your improvement in 2 week stages it helps with the mental part of the recovery don’t get discouraged on any bad day you may or may not encounter . You’ll do great I’m sure you’re a healthy , good shape gentleman . Sending along prayers for a speedy and full recovery Looking forward to hearing about your progress !🙏🙏

I had my knee replacement surgery on March 4 in the Spring this year. My knee was bone on bone for my right knee. My wife had her left knee surgery on Nov. 6 last year. Robotic surgery usually has a faster recovery. My surgery was "hands on" in Calgary, Alberta. . . . the Vardo is coming along nicely. Your yard and garage cleanup is progressing nicely. I don’t mind a short video. It’s nice to see any progress at all, and I’m excited to see the next steps for the vardo. I’m interested to see how you’re going to insulate everything. Is it going to be a year round traveling residence or just a summer vacation home? I can just see it being pulled into a traveler’s camp ground. It will certainly turn heads, because it’s so unique.
Cleaning up is a PITA (pain in the @$$) on a good day. I will strongly recommend that you concentrate on getting the things that are outside redded up first. (Yes, “redd” is a word. I’ve even found it in Webster’s dictionary.) After all, you can clean up the garage while watching the snow falling outside through the windows. Your tools will probably be better off under a roof, too.

I've had both knees done a few years ago....what a relief from pain and sadly unable to get on my knees only can when wear good knee pads!!!! Praise God for his care and provision. By the chop saw....a good place for a plastic 30 gal. trash can!!!!!!

Seems like your creativity was stifled mostly building similar garages for 30 years. Sure is coming out now!!! Don't forget to water the flowers in the box ;) Sounds like typical medical insurance stuff. Doctor says you need a knee replacement, insurance forces you to do cortisone shots first and wait months even though the doctor knows it won't help and when it doesn't you get an appointment for knee replacement.
I could have requested it for this past summer but it was my choice to have this fall
I had my right knee replaced about 8 years ago so things may have changed. I had the operation and spent 5 days in the hospital. Then was home for over a month before I couldn't stand it and went to my building to do lightweight easy things. During that time I was going to physical therapy and doing stretches at home.

In the early days after surgery, use an ice water wrap to ease the pain. the doctor should know about a circulation system that pumps cold water from the Ice water slurry to the wrap around your knee. It helps a great deal.

Hi Ken. We enjoy your videos! After your surgery you will feel pain; HOWEVER, it is totally different from the pain you are now experiencing. Also, instead of your knee pain getting worse each day, it will get better. Pain medication will be your best friend - don't skip any doses. This advice comes from both me & my husband -- together we have had 4 knee replacements.

FYI, Festool makes a foam cutting blade for a Jigsaw. Despite it’s expensive name, it is quite reasonable. The huge benefits is a smooth and mess free cut.

The ones I purchased have a Bosch label on the package .They look like one of those fancy wavy bladed kitchen knives... I have some for my sawzall and jigsaw... Caution these blades slice human flesh like a hot knife through warm butter... Works great for cardboard, leather, rubber and foam rubber also
Great project so far. Suggestion would be to ask the docs about PT before surgery because a bit of strength will help with lateral stability (side to side) and a quicker return to normal afterward. It may be as simple as sitting on a stool and leg bending with some added weight. (couple of pounds) My son did his with 2 soup cans in a bag that just hung from his ankle. IOW, no need for anything fancy. Just do it 2-3 times a day for a few minutes. BTW, I believe one of those tall bar stools you made is about the right height!

@@kenskarpentry we ALL want to be in better shape, right? The PT is more about the muscles around the knee because of how they will stretch things while installing the new parts. BTW, also look into some of those sneakers that don't need to be tied. (slip-on) You can get a better list of those small things from the doc.

I have had one total knee replacement about 9 nine years ago. The best advise I can give you is....do the rehab exercises. Keep the knee moving and I know it will hurt, but it will get better.

I had my left knee done 2 years ago. Came home same day as the surgery, started therapy the next day. Therapy wasn't pleasant but I was pushing myself also. Listen to your therapist and do everything. You have to meet a certain range of motion. I got through it real good. There was a lady there on her second attempt and she walked with a cane. Her Husband said she has zero pain tolerance and wasn't going along with the program. If she didn't meet her range of motion criteria this time around she will be to healed and would need a cane probablly the rest of her life. It really wasn't all that bad. Just a pain.

Hi Ken.
I'm sure you've heard every story, good and bad, about knee replacement. Since it's all new to you, I'm sure it causes you deep concern and fear of the unknown. I've been in your shoes and was scared and not too sure that I wanted to proceed. Although it's considered a big surgery, it's so commonplace that the success rate is extremely high. I went into my first replacement surgery having a left hip and a right knee replaced the same day. It was a bit of a struggle afterwards but they had me up and walking around with a walker the very same day and I went home the following day. Yes, it's a bit painful in the very early stages of recovery but it gets better each and every day. I personally didn't need any pain medication but everyone is different. But a funny thing begins to happen. Yes, you have a bit of pain from the surgery, but you also begin to realize that your knee itself doesn't hurt anymore. That's good news when you realize it.
I may have shared this with you before but there's a few things you can do at home that will make your recovery easier. First, you'll be spending a fair amount of time in a recliner....it's just the way it is. For active guys like us, it's not what we're used to but it's something you must do. Get out into your workshop and build a platform to put the recliner on. I made mine about 7 inches tall and it helps you immensely to get in and out of the chair. Make it just big enough to sit the chair on and add some safety pieces so the chair doesn't slide around on the platform. You'll thank yourself for making it. Also, I went and bought a toilet seat extension which is a round booster that attaches to the bowl. No holes to drill or anything but it raises the seat area about 6 inches or so. You would be surprised how non stressful it is on your wound when sitting and standing. Then just one last piece of advice. When you're sitting or lying down and you begin to feel a bathroom urge, get moving immediately because it's takes a lot longer to get there than normal. You'll be glad you did. Then, therapy. I can't stress enough how important it is. Don't blow off the home therapy. Do the exercises as they outline and don't short cut it. You'll be good as new before you know it. I've had 7 various joint replacements and each one was amazingly successful and recovery went better than expected. You'll enjoy the same results. The stories about how long a new joint will last are all baloney. They last forever. My surgeon told me that unless I begin playing pro football, or take up skydiving, he'll never see me again for the same joint. That's more good news.
So how successful is joint replacement surgery? Now, at 75 years of age, I can work on my hobby cars doing anything necessary, do anything at all around the house, climb ladders, lay under the sink, throw the football around with my grandson and easily run out to catch a pass. Most recently I had both shoulders replaced and can again throw a football 55 yards. Look forward to more than a replacement...look forward to being restored. Don't worry...it's just a scratch. Ken, I know youre hurting. We are similar in age, and my knees hurt too. Have you thought about just selling it with an unfinished interior? Let the new owner finish the interior to their liking. Sometimes thats what new owners want. And your profits may be maximized by minimizing your expenses now. Then sit back and rest a bit, and get ready for a year long recovery. The good news is you’re close to 200.

I had my left knee replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago and my right knee replaced 6 months ago. Make sure you stay on top of your pain meds set your alarm to take them on time it will help a lot. It takes time for your knee to heal so don’t try to rush it. I think by six months out my new knees felt great.

Hi Ken, regarding your knee surgery just remember to take meds as prescribed and do the physical therapy with the therapist AS WELL AS AT HOME. This January will be 6 years from my knee replacement. In those 6 years I’ve had 2 pretty bad experiences with inflammation. 1 was a really bad experience. The swelling came out of no where, really unexpected time. I wasn’t doing anything strenuous to have caused it. Other times just some slight aches and pains to the replaced knee. Overall, I can’t complain. Any aches and pains I’ve had after the surgery have been a lot better than the severe pain I endured BEFORE the knee replacement. I will pray for you to have a better experience and speedy recovery.

To solve the stair issue, why couldn’t the door swing in like most front doors!
Doors swinging out are common on trailers and RVs. Something about usable space in the interior. That way when the bear leans against the door less likely to open inward.

Just a quick question? Do you ever use biscuits or dowels for strength when building those frames? I had very good luck with the dowels but not so much with the biscuits.
I have used biscuits in the past, but it’s been a long time. And I don’t really use towels.
