    Sounds better than the ADLIB music we got in the Castlevania DOS port

      It's actually more like the Nes Music than the MS Dos port.

      Proof that the fault wasn't the hardware of the time, but rather the people using it.

    Really cool, Wicked Child and Out of Time have no right to sound several orders of magnitude better than their NES counterparts but here we are

    Sounds very clean! The Adlib/YM3812/Operator type L is way much more powerfull than people think. Love the 'metallic' digital Yamaha synthesized sound. Very suitable for certain instruments because of its bright tone palette. Love these old compositions to death, very Scooby Doo :-D

    • @MelonadeM
      @MelonadeM  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this is really cool, is it a proper fangame or some sort of hdnes thing with the music disabled?

    • @mrmadmight266
      @mrmadmight266 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go watch it for yourself, like i said i already posted it in my channel. but if you already watched it then it's just a recreation of how the game would be in better hardware, or in a more advanced DOS computer.

    • @MelonadeM
      @MelonadeM  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah i see; i was asking because i noticed a few things (namely some sfx being slightly different, and the crash at the end). the sfx led me to believe it's from the ground up, while the crash led me to believe it was a HDNES pack for the CV rom file, so i wasn't sure which one was it.
      for a recreation though it's stupidly close to the NES game mechanically, so great job there

    • @mrmadmight266
      @mrmadmight266 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, some SFX are different because they were taken from Akumajou Densetsu/Castlevania 3. the crash at the end happens if you leave an armoured knight alive while you try to go forward to the boss. either way thanks for letting me use this Adlib soundtrack, the Adlib music from the official DOS version to me is ok but it's just not well composed in some places.

    These are absolutely stellar arrangements. And while I know it wasn't your goal here, I figured I'd let you know that there's one more track associated with Castlevania 1 that you missed: the MSX-version ending theme. Though it's labeled as "Unused" (as the ripper clearly didn't know where it was played), video XpY_htd2rU0 is the track in question.
    I mention this because one of the natively supported sound chips in MSX hardware produces Yamaha OPLL audio, which is more or less compatible with OPL2, so if you were to cover the MSX-version ending theme in a future video as a supplement to this one, I imagine the MSX fan community could very easily patch your music directly into the game with minimal effort and very few changes. Which would be amazing, and which I would personally be super-psyched for, as the MSX version of Castlevania 1 is one of my favorite games in the whole Castlevania series (it's VERY different from the NES version!), and I also absolutely adore OPLL music. And while the PSG music in MSX Castlevania is quite good, your OPL2 renditions would be an absolutely AWESOME change of pace!
    Just figured I'd throw that out there. Regardless of what you do with this information, great job with these tracks! I've subscribed to your channel, as I've enjoyed many of your other tracks as well.

    • @MelonadeM
      @MelonadeM  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I've known about that unused MSX track for a while now, and I actually wanted to include it in some fashion, but I thought an arrangement of Can't Wait Until The Night would just fit better (considering the Haunted Castle board ALSO uses an OPL2)
      You mentioned OPLL, and it will not be a 1:1 port if someone takes that on. The OPLL, unlike the OPL2, has a limited patch set (part of cost-cutting measures), and the music likely won't sound as good with it.
      However, you could definitely do a 1:1 port of the music on the Moonsound, which has an OPL4 chip on board (and that is directly backwards compatible with the OPL2 used here)

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelonadeM I've been told by a homebrew MSX composer friend of mine that the OPLL used in the MSX is more capable than its name would imply, with specs that are largely on par with OPL2. But "largely on par" certainly doesn't mean "the same as," so yeah, changes would be inevitable. Using OPL4 would be an option for sure, but that would require the end user have an OPL4 cartridge inserted in his/her system (or be using emulation, which is more likely), whereas OPLL is natively supported by a good chunk of MSX2 systems, as well as all (or all-ish?) MSX2+ and MSX turboR systems. So for compatibility's sake, converting it to OPLL would be better, and would probably sound pretty darn close to your OPL2 compositions in the right hands.
      Of course, there's no reason a good homebrew developer couldn't implement both -- plenty of MSX homebrew titles offer the end-user a choice between MSX-music (OPLL) or Moonsound (OPL4) on startup, or even auto-detect OPL4. So yeah, there are options here for sure!
      And I'm just brainstorming, anyway. I appreciate you responding so quickly, however! Found your channel through your Fire Hawk in the style of Mega Man video, which was also super-cool (Fire Hawk is my favorite MSX game). So regardless of what you come up with next, I just like your style in general, and am looking forward to your future compositions. Good lookin' out, yo! ;)
