Ahh The Famous Valhalla Episode, One of the fan favorites!!
Honestly this was one of the greatest episodes I’ve watch in anime when it comes to storytelling and emotions this was perfect! I was shocked after watching this and I already read the manga aha, they added a few anime original scene so It felt like I was experiencing it for the first time! Very impressive voice acting from Thorfinn’s va + the ost’s were beautiful! Askeladd intro was epic and some very powerful quotes “Become A True Warrior” “We’ll be Reborn”!!
This season 2 is a very unique experience and glad you’re enjoying it!

Omg wow dude that’s the first super thanks I’ve had on a reaction ❤ what a kind gesture man I appreciate that. And yes! The emotions maaaan oh wow it was special. The pacing and everything about this show is perfect so far I will have to pick up the manga and see what the differences are. I’m totally invested to try and read it but not go far ahead yet lol

What an masterpiece of an show... In EP8, Thorfinn finally realized that he actually loved Askeladd too. I was literally crying throughout the whole EP9 and most of EP8. This shit is beautiful... This show has a real message for people. Something to teach them. I wish it was more popular because it deserves it. This was legitimately one of the best episodes of anything I ever watched. Along with the finale of S1. The only show that has hit me as much is One Piece. One Piece has some CRAZY emotional moments. Tons of them.

Oh yeah it’s wild how much we can connect to this show, It’s funny because I went into this thinking it was going to be big Viking battles and huge armies fighting for anime yet this is a complete 180 and it’s one of the most relatable/beautiful shows out there… not just anime

I was mostly speechless (+ cutting onions ofc) when I watched this for the first time. :D Absolutely amazing job from everyone involved, wow. Please just give these people the resources they need to adapt the whole thing, and I couldn't be happier.
Great reaction and discussion as always mate! Cheers

Someone gotta stop cutting those onions 😭 and yeah I hope we can continue to get more seasons, scares me to think it could get dropped at any time but yeah I think for the most part those who have watched this show will continue to do so. Thanks for the kind words Hans!

I feel like Thorfinn won't give up self defense when necessary, but generally acting out of rage or without consideration to any violence like he used to

    • @HunterW2021
      @HunterW2021  ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think thorfinn doesn’t even know it himself yet but the violence he meant was most likely just seeking out innocent people and killing with weapons of that sort like in the war arc.
When it comes to defending he def will protect those in need as a warrior without weapons like his friends and family I don’t think he’ll just watch them die after resigning from violence. I agree with you

@Hunter W It makes me think of how Thors refused to kill anyone in Askeladd's crew in S1. He still fought them to protect, but made an effort to avoid killing, and violence was a last resort as he explored other options first

I think he actually doesn't want to use any more violence at all, but will find himself struggling keeping that attitude up similar to Thors.

Hey man, nice to see you reacting to these episodes! Don't worry about delays, it's not like you're doing this full time and real life can be demanding. As long as I can see your reactions to the show i'm happy ^^
There's a lot of stuff to be said about these two episodes so let's get into it:
Seeing Thorfinn open up with Einar about his relationship with Askeladd was really nice, especially him admitting that he doesn't hate the man anymore. Sure Askeladd and Thorfinn did terrible stuff to others and to each other but in the end the both of them actually cared for each other in their own strange way having spend more than a decade together. Thorfinn just couldn't see it as he was blinded by his hate (which is completely understandable to be fair) and Askeladd never really admitted to others or himself that he cared for Thorfinn, not until the very end at least.
I loved the imagery of empty Thorfinn with the white background. First time we saw that it was Thors death, then Askeladd's and now it's the metaphorical death of Thorfinn, as he doesn't have any drive left to do anything, he feels like he lacks a purpose. Still, there is growth. Thorfinn doesn't want to see Einar go down the same path as he did, consumed by revenge. In the manga, after Einar calms down, Thorfinn actually tells him that "nothing good comes from revenge" and him aknowledging that is a big step towards a better future.
About the fight with the retainers: that punch was one of the most satisfying punches in the entire show, and I've seen a lot of people be like "oh yea Thorfinn, get 'em" (including me the first time i read that chapter). The fact that you can't help but feel a hint of satisfaction at that punch is very ironic, seeing that resorting to violence is not the point of the story at all.
Also interesting to see is the fact that Thorfinn snapped when the farmhand insulted the fact that they were slaves which is exactly the thing that made Askeladd snap against king Sweyn at the end of season 1. In the end they are more alike than they think.
Also Einar is a goddamn beast taking on four guys on his own and fucking winning.
Episode 9 was top tier: I was waiting for this to be animated ever since i finished reading the chapter. The fact that it is Askeladd of all people to make Thorfinn realize what he needs to do is just so poetic and beautiful. He mustn't wallow in self pity over what he did, he's got no time to cry about what he's done, that's just going to destroy him in the end. You can have a moment of emptiness and uncertainty but you have to pull yourself back up dragging all of what's been weighing you down and find your true purpose: that is the true battle, and that what it means to be a true warrior. It's just so beautiful to see in the story but also a good life lesson for everyone who's struggling. Peak writing right here.
In the end we shall see how Thorfinn's new convictions will hold up in a world where fighting is the main reason to live. To give up fighting completely seem like an unreasonable objective all things considered: the true question is what is worth fighting for. Thors knew the answer to that and now Thorfinn must find it as well.
The last image of the episode of Thorfinn holding a plough instead of a sword is beautiful imagery: the warrior gave up on violence and destruction and is now learning creation. Such a beautiful character development and a spectacular arc, AND we're not even half way through!
Sorry for the LONG comment but i always get carried away when talking about this show. Vinland Saga has probably become one of my top three manga/anime of all time.
Looking forward to the next episodes, have a good one mate!

Dude no worries for the long comment
Everything you said is spot on! Thorfinns emptiness with the white background was clearly a parallel to him feeling empty when he lost people he cared for. Good pointer
And this story really resonates with me as you can see it hit like a ton of bricks, what’s really keeping me invested here is how he’ll hold up his resignation from violence in a violent world. I believe he’ll still defend himself and those around him, but never to harm others like he had previously done. Just a semi prediction for what I think will happen to his character.

This story is just really something special. I’m so happy to see you getting so much out of it. I don’t blame people for not enjoying this, taste is a relative thing, but I do wish more people would try to engage with it with their whole hearts like you do. I think what’s being said here is important for any single one of us to understand. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary too.
