    What was powerful about this scene is that after Kellerman killed Mahoney, a lesser show would have left it at that. Bad guy shot dead. Justice, right? But Homicide followed it through - how that one act set off a course of events that would rip apart the station, resulting in Bayliss getting shot & Pembleton leaving the force in disgust. Still unnerving to watch after all these years.

    • @frankzappaspussy7362
      @frankzappaspussy7362 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      and irony is that Mahoney only got shot cos the TV execs were fed up with him getting away with so much shit and insisted that he face some consequences - little realizing that he would meet his sticky end in this way..

      If Kellerman had shot him a few seconds earlier when the gun was actually pointed at Lewis, it's quite likely that all the same stuff would have happened. Or maybe it wouldn't, since Kellerman and Lewis' actions throughout Season 6 (and even Falsone, who willingly fed Lewis info on the Mahoney organisation even when he knew what Lewis was doing with it) only exacerbated the situation.

    Ya'll can keep all the Law and Orders, NCIS shows, Chicago whatevers etc. There have never been nor ever will be better cop shows than Hill Street Blues and Homicide: Life On The Street. They're also in the top television dramas of all time! Every cop show or tv drama ever since they came out has taken from them in some way, shape or form. True masterpieces.

    I still miss this show so much. I was on active duty during most of its run (and I still am to this day, 26 years and counting) and had to get my parents to record shows for me and my husband. If they forgot everything else I may have asked them to do while I was stationed OCONUS or deployed and remembered only this, all was forgiven. I remember one year I planned our PCS move around a Homicide season finale, to make sure I could see it the night it aired. We were driving cross country and I planned our stop for the night to get to the hotel (who am I kidding, it was a motel-uncle Sam was paying per diem, we weren’t staying at a Four Seasons, lol) in time to put our first child, then an infant, to bed and then watch Homicide. My first job out of law school while waiting to go on active duty as a Jag was practicing criminal law in Virginia, including the eastern shore and Maryland so the location and subject matter held a special familiarity, authenticity and relevance for me. The depiction of Charm City, from the actors, scrips/dialog, local cultural references and accents and even the handheld camera recording method were all so well done the show for me was almost like watching a documentary. I haven’t seen a show since Homicide that captured a location, its people and the subject matter as accurately that’s resonated with me personally.

    (Comment post 1 of 4) I very greatly appreciate the Homicide: Life on the Street postings you have made and are making.
    The cogency of Meldrick's soliloquy about "we are taking on human desire with lawyers, and jailhouses and lockups...and human desire is kicking us in the ass" is easily missed. Sounds like this little bit may have come out of David Simon's book. I hope it did!

      I dont see how they could have avoided telling her that Luther was getting shot, since she's in the scene. It's just a testament to the actor's ability. Another great touch is how she reacts after she says she doesnt have a problem with it, and clearly does. She's kind of startled by the officers coming in as well. This is exactly how a person would react if they've got something extremely heavy on their mind, something they just saw and cant come to terms with.

    Such a damn good scene but it's clear that the blanks they are using must be inducing some kind of malfunction because you see both Lewis and Kellerman's guns lock back like that. Either that or they just have one blank in the mag and it's locking it back....does kind of take you out of the scene when you notice that. Then again most people who don't know shit about guns would probably just miss it entirely.

    • @fashiondiva6972
      @fashiondiva6972 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed people who needlessly over analyze TV shows intended as entertainment to point out highly technical issues 98% of the viewing public wouldn’t bother to dwell on when watching a TV drama do tend to ruin it for everyone else with their pointless Monday morning, “I’m so smart I can’t help myself but to drone on about inane details” quarterbacking. As a lifelong gun owner and collector who has been shot at more times than I’d care to recall, during multiple combat deployments, who’s maintained expert marksman status every year of my military career (all 26 of them), somehow, as if by evil magic or the remarkably rare concept of not being a poser, I choose not to seek out irrelevant issues while simply trying to enjoy a movie-especially when said details are wholly irrelevant to the production overall. But as is always the case, there has to be person in every group. Congrats on being that person🤦🏾‍♀️🙄

    (Comment post 3 of 5) - I think the better decision would have been to make Kellerman hold-off longer on discharging his gun until Mahoney had continued to raise his own a little higher in the direction of Meldrick (who was to the right of Mahoney and Mahoney himself was in front of Kellerman). Kellerman had already ordered Luther several times to drop his gun. Mahoney was in the process of lifting his gun slowly upward, even though the movement was possibly unintentional.

    As Giardello will say later, he might have argued successfully before a board and beaten any charges if not for the false reports that he, Lewis and Stivers filed.

  • @lightsearcher1
    @lightsearcher1 16 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    (Comment post 4 of 5) - Kellerman was a terrific character and I just did not like the way his character was sullied by this mostly incorrect act. The program could have still squeezed just as much of the legal/professional career jeopardy and drama out of this event in the following season 6 even if it were a bit more morally "undecipherable."

    • @DBrown-gu4ry
      @DBrown-gu4ry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baltimore is a dirty place, with dirty criminals and dirty cops. Kellerman's shooting being black and white is a great touch. It's proceeded by Lewis saying he's a good cop, then beating the daylights out of Mahoney. It makes you consider where the line is. Most viewers were okay with Mahoney being beat, and then the writers ask, "Okay, so if you're okay with that, are you okay with this?" And you've got to ask yourself as a citizen....are you? Should you be?

      I thought that was because on tv shows, if they're only going to do one, they just put one blank in and that causes the slide to stay back. And I thought they just left it in because most people wouldn't even notice. But, it's still like that when he holsters it. The cool part is that when the other guy takes it, he has to rack the slide. So, it was meant to be that the gun jammed in the story.

      @Jason Hopkins best I can figure, NBC doesn’t own the streaming rights🤷‍♂️

      The series uses copyrighted music from a wide variety of artists, just as Northern Exposure and WKRP In Cincinnati did with no problem until copyright law was warped in to its present absolute IP ownership/control model. And because of that, ASCAP won't allow these series episodes to air on TV or on streaming services unless they're "sanitised" i.e. all music replaced by generic musak. So these shows get put in the vault if ASCAP can't get their "protection" cut.

      @@LordZontar - Yup. The clips of music during the series introduced me to new music at the time that I would not have otherwise known. I still am hoping against hope this gets resolved.
