Every animal has just enough brains to preserve it's own hide.

It took me 17 videos before this one to find what i was loooking for. The other should literally be reported as clickbait spam. This video is what the title says it is. Thankyou sir. Im semi-outdoorsy, i was born in '86, so ya know, i was half in the bush, half playing video games. But iv had to live in rough conditions while building canins in the middle of no where up north working pay cheque to pay cheque, fishing to either catch supper or goto bed hungry, sometimes wed stay up so late trying that it bacame fish for breakfast and then a auick nap to start work a little late. But if things go tits up, and they will (wether im alive then or not is anyones guess right now) and i want to kno the things that i dont for when we all have to live like this. Your doing a great service sir, and i hope your work changes the world for the better so,eday if it hasnt already. Good video, im sharing it right now

Hey Dave. I love your channel and have been watching you religiously for years. Just a few clarifications. I'm a trapper/hobby tanner/student of primitive technologies and have been tanning with chemical, bark and brain tanning for many years and have become a student of that as well. Brain tanning is a mechanical tan with no real tannins invoked. The brains provide the necessary oils to break up the fibers during the breaking phase. Eggs or an oil/soap solution does the same thing. The smoking chemically sets the oils to prevent resetting of the glues and re-hardening the skin fibers. There's really no tannins in the brains as in bark or commercial tannins. Just trying to help. Great video, as always. I would love to meet you and/or participate as a student in one of your classes some day. Keep up the great videos.

Im glad you told me the tip about how the brain solution on the fur will make it slip because in another video I watched, a guy said to put the solution on the fur too. Man... Ive watched a million videos and read a million articles and everything says something different. Its frustrating as HELL. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Also Dave I have just received my bushcraft 101 the other day and I read it cover to cover in a day. Can't wait for the advanced one to come out. Thanks again Mr. Canterbury for the hundreds of videos and the bushcraft books, you have made a huge impact on me. Soon as I return to North America I may have to take a trip just to shake your hand!

Very interesting Dave, I have tanned ( keeping fur on) rabbit hide using alum, and in that instance I immerse the whole hide in the solution twice and there is no hair loss. With the brain tannin method its interesting to see that you only have to cover the non fur side with the mixture ( makes sense really). I have been meaning to try this method as far better to utilise the animal brain than using purchased alum. Thank you for the interesting vid and really look forward to part 2. a.t.b. vee

Hum, seems faster than traditional tanning. Might be a good solution. I was never much for making leather. I learned a long time ago but never liked it too much. I guess some people are just suited for some jobs better than other jobs. I love working with wood, fabrics, and leathers but not so much tanning them.
I would not let him drink brain juice...never thought I would say that sentence in my lifetime, ha. Anyway I stay away from neurological tissue. Ingesting neurological tissue can cause problems. It normally does not jump species, but I stay away from it just in case.

      bad hat
Um, I thought Acacias were all over Africa as well as here in Oz...(?).
There are many different varieties, mostly fast-growing but they die after 20 or 30 years, and if you don't use them for firewood as soon as they dry out they rot away pretty quick too...
The Bark on the Adult Trees that've fallen from the Wind is the easiest when collecting for Tanning...; and the Seeds can be used to grind for Flour or roasted for "Wattlechino" with ablut the same amount of Caffeine as Coffee...
In effect, if one has a stand of Wattle on the Rock-Block it's as good as a Paddock of Wheat, if one wants to "go Native" simply collect the Seeds and store them dry till ready to Grind or Roast...; at least, that's my backup-plan...
I didn't know they were rare Ornamentals in the Americas...
      Have a good one,
      ;-p
      Ciao !

the way ive been taught about the brain solution is to put the brain in room temperature water to mash it up then boil the solution for about a minute or so then let it sit to cool but it still needs to be hot enough too where its almost too hot. keep it hot enough to where it soaks in but not cook the skin and so you can actually handle it without burning your hands. None the less great video and love watching this kinda stuff

The body is like a house where the eyes, ears, nose etc are like the windows and doors to the house. The mind is like the compound or garden that surrounds the house. So that the world and reality is experienced through this compound, in the way that we would view the outside world, only through the garden, the garden fence and the shrubbery planted within our own minds.

Cattle hides are massive and i just axed open two cow skulls and the brain is TINY. Around the size of a large apple. About the size of what you used on this beaver hide.

Bark tanning is just one way to make leather. An easier way to do it is to soak a fleshed hide in urine for several weeks. When the urine tanned hide is removed from the urea bath, the hair just falls off and once washed in clean water it can be stretched and dried, then wetted and worked over a pole or a ring to soften it into a leather with a soft hand that can be turned into clothing and accessories like tool pouches and thongs.
