Written by a fellow Scotsman in the 1700s, after a particularly severe trial in his life. He said it came to him as if the angels themselves had whispered in his ear, and the man who wrote the music said something similar. Certainly a song the Holy Spirit meant to edify for centuries.

I’ve heard it said that older people love these old hymns because of nostalgic memories of “the good old days in the little church they grew up in” Hmmm. I’m older … but I didn’t grow up in church … some of these hymns I’ve never heard until now. Amazing how the truth in these lyrics are as powerful as ever! Thank you for the blessing of bringing this song to a new generation of us late boomer bloomers. Love you guys!!!
I too did not grow up in a Christian church. These are all new hymns to me as a 30 year old! But how sweet they are indeed!!!!
Those of us who were brought up in the church sadly take these oldie songs for granted.

The truth is older hymns usually are rooted to the Truth. Hence bereft of empty, meaningless words. It is the acknowledging of Truth that we who are drawn to these songs truly rejoice in.

I have been longing for an arrangement that would do justice to this amazing song. And this morning, having gone through a trial, He lifted my sorrow with the remembrance of this song in my heart. So precious is our Lord! I then googled the song and found this amazing rendition! Tears!! And it was recorded in 2022! I looked this song up because I am reading the story of Oswald Chambers, Abandoned to God. It says this was a favorite song of his. Beautiful!

George Mathewson (1842- 1906) . Penned the words to this hymn by the inspiration of the holy spirit at a point in time of his life when he was going through great pains and mental and spiritual anguish, God was comforting him by his holy Reed off his of the very words of this hymn. This man had a real walk with God, "in short that going into 2 much detail Jesus was saying he will never let him go no matter what is happening to him, words from the lord Jesus will always strengthen and encourage an individual not just only for present but for always, there is nobody like Jesus, he is the bestest friend anybody could have.

One of my favorite songs, done so beautifully! The accompaniment was perfect, the two lovely voices blend so well. Just lovely.
Kirsten you’ve a beautifully soft sincere voice a wonderful blend of two amazing voices. I remember hearing a lovely man always choose this hymn each time he came to preach at a tiny chapel. His struggles were immense. He had a very disabled wife he had to lift into the car, then drive to preach, and she sat all the time in the car patiently waiting. For many years, he did this in all weathers. his face radiated Jesus. His choice always this hymn. Thank you ❤️

I’m old and have loved this beautiful prayer/hymn my whole life. I don’t always appreciate what the younger generation does with the dear old favorites I grew up with but I find this a totally appropriate and sensitive and lovely rendition. It brings the tears the same way it did when I first heard it in that small church that was a cathedral to me with my mother playing the organ. Thank you. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!❤
The last time I heard this great hymn was at a prayer meeting in a village in Clackmannanshire, the smallest county in Scotland.
This duet and accompaniment took me back to that summer's night in the early 1980s, and the Christian girl from Tasmania I was with.

The Lord has been so gracious and kind and beyond faithful to bring the encouragement of His Word to my heart. Please remember, "A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice." (Isa 42:3) So, just as He continues to encourage us as we battle the ills & evils of this world, apart from the trials and tribulations that come from the devil, the Lord Himself will not subject us to anything of the sort. Just as it is written, for eg. Rev 2:24-25, "...I WILL NOT IMPOSE ANY OTHER BURDEN ON YOU. ONLY HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL I COME." Be strong and trust in His unfailing Goodness at all times. God be with you and sustain you.

The background to this hymn is awesome. George Matheson was training for the ministry he was engaged to be married but was losing his eyesight. His fiance could not face a future with a blind husband so broke off the engagement. In order to complete his studies his sister devoted herself to helping him in the process
She taught herself Hebrew and Greek in order to assist him. When she eventually married he was finally left alone and that was when he penned this hymn

Love, love, love this! I love it even more when there are lyrics. My husband and many friends are deaf and if I post, they are curious , but they notice when THE church is not accessible. My biggest heartbreak. Note: Not all Deaf people like or understand hearing music. That is ok. Their ideal church experience is presented differently, (another topic)

In Mark 16:15 he commands us too "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature". I take this command very serious.
