Thank you so much for this video - it was very helpful. It was originally mentioned last year that there was concern for very mild MGD based on expression & was given tips on diet/supplements/etc. I moved & was recently diagnosed with mild MGD with imaging. The provider told me that there was nothing that I could do - that everything is ineffective except lipiflow. I've continued my supplements, using a warm compress, & will use your demonstration of massage.

Have you found something useful for your case? I am investigating some eye pains for about 3 years now and I have consulted some Glaucoma experts and now I am consulting a dry eye expert, howerver I am kind of lost here, tbh

That was the most detailed and comprehensive overview of what could possibly be influencing or causing meibomian gland dysfunction. Thanks for sharing!!

This is very helpful, comprehensive information and gives me hopes of getting my situation under control again. I’m also reading that it is important to remember to blink often, especially when reading a book or ‘staring’ at phone and computer screens, so now have made myself a note as a reminder. Thank you Dr. D!

I put the Bruder mask in the microwave for 40 seconds. Then I set my timer for 8 minutes. By the time I get in my chair and set my Calm app to crackling fireplace the mask has cooled. If it’s still too warm I fold a tissue in quarters and put it between my eyelids and the mask. As soon as the timer goes off I wash my face and my eyelids to remove any plugs of oil. Once a day is all I need. If I don’t do this routine then by 6pm my eyes are watering so badly I can’t see.

This was such a good informative video but I am really frightened of any manipulation with my eyes open. I have dry eye and blepharitis so I will discuss and ask questions at my next eye exam. TY!

If MGD is a serious eye disease, why does insurance not cover the treatments?

I think my long term wear of soft contacts was causing it and was really set it off was wearing heavy eyeliner, especially on my lower lids. Poor little glands. Getting them treated with Ilux on the 20th 😊

I have had lipiflow without much change. I think IPL is my next treatment option. I have multiple states on my lids ...

Hi Dr D! Loved this tutorial! Do you think a facial steamer would help open the glands enough before the massage? Thank you!❤

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  ปีที่แล้ว +2

in some cases, yes! have used this technique with a few patients. but facial steam can exacerbate rosacea (as can hot compresses!) so with caution...

It made one of my eyes worse ...too much pressure and too many attempts.... still painful weeks later. Heated eyes then made me pay before expressing as receptionist was leaving so cooled down. Steam hurt my eyes and vision damaged. Would never have it again and I went to a professional.

I feel you. Got dry eyes a few months ago. I literally got told its just dry eyes, to being told to use systane balance (with preservatives), to being told its mgd, all the time i cant use warm compresses cos they make my skin worse.... since my skin around my eyes is inflamed too. UK sucks at this!

You can buy a Bruder eye mask on Amazon. Use it once a day. Heat it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. Relax with the mask over your eyes for 5-10 minutes. Then gently wash your eyelids. Use lubricating eye drops 3-4 times a day. It’s life changing. I’m 75 and have been doing this routine for 5 years.

@@graveart1105 thanks. I have optase mask which is basically the Bruder mask. The issue is my skin around my eyes becomes red and inflamed so I can't use heat compresses soi dont know what to do about that.

The best remedy for me is warm compresses and expressing the glands immediately after. I have tried everything for the past 18 months and have found this condition to be tolerable with Tyrvaya, warm compresses and Systane gel drops. Also 2-3 times a day I put a light layer of cerevae healing ointment on the eyelid and also under the eye also. Castor oil works as well. I found consistency with everything is the best answer and produces a pretty good result. I have tried Restasis and Xidra and it didn’t help hardly at all. Wishing you relief!

Yes, dry eye is largely ill-served in the UK. However there are some of us who specialise. Keep looking!

About a month ago an optometrist did this to me when my eyelid was already slightly inflamed. Ever since then my eyelid has been completely swollen and inflamed.
Any ideas on what I can do to fix the damage they caused? Ive tried warm compresses.

@@EyeSchoolwithDrD Thank you. I really enjoy your videos, as they are so informative. I've seen so many opthomologists after my BMEK surgery this last year. All have said that I have dry eyes and to do warm compresses and use Refresh Mega 3 eye drops. I also use Refresh PM. One said to wear moister chamber goggles at night. My Dermatologist gave me Doxycycline for Rosacea.

Hi, what do you think about testosterone eye drops/gel?
In many videos you've mentioned that anti-androgens can effect the glands negatively, so can we counteract the effects of products/medicine (bakuchiol, finasteride) with a topical application of androgens to the eye itself?
    Thanks!

my Dr charges $800 for an extraction. Who can afford that? I did it once or twice and it does help me so much but I cannot afford $800 every month or two. Is there an affordable options for me? I have tried expressing at home but its just not as effective. I feel they took advantage of me but I have no recourse and I am still suffering. Please advise.

I've def got this. Its awful. No more makeup. Wake with it. Is there a makeup line for dry eye maybe? Even face creams, base for face, or powder base is awful. Eyes still get burning, gritty. I can wear nothing now. I dont like to go in public anymore. Slits for eyes. 😢

I found out today that i have this and i got an in office expression done. I would also like to know if there's any eye makeup that is safer to wear as i have largely cut down on my eye makeup, but i still want to wear it for special events at least. I miss wearing eye liner. Since she doesn't respond (probably for liability reasons) my guess is using products that have safer ingredients per the EWGs Skin Deep website is a least a better bet. Just remember, more natural ingredients isn't a guarantee that the product is less irritating. I wonder, maybe liquid liner is better than pencils, gels, etc bc it's thinner? And non water proof is probably better bc it's washed off easier? These are just my thoughts.

I think too much time staring at phone and computer screens also exacerbates this. Remember to blink often!

@SDWits I'm wondering abt fake lashes? But just kinda put on rt above waterline? Or professionally done? Or lash perm an dye? I'm 55 an this has been going on since 2021 where it's so bad I can't wear makeup. No eyelashes!! Ugh...Covid gave an excuse to not wear makeup due to mask wearing and have to admit...I wore them even when I didn't need to! Dbl UGH...I wish someone would make something for Dry Eye Disease.
