Thank you. I spent every summer with my Grandparents in the San Luis Valley. I still remember the A&W Drive inn. I would go to Kelloff's with my Grandad every Sat for whatever Granma needed. I ALWAYS got one of the suckers in the jar at check out. Thank you for sharing. I miss my family, and the Valley.....
Thanks for sharing this, Alamosa is my hometown but I've lived in Arkansas for 23 years now, and it's been 5 years since I've been home. I miss Alamosa and the folks back home!!!
I’m from Alamosa. Graduated high school in 1980. Most of my family still lives there. I moved away to Colorado Springs 7 years ago. Miss my family but love the Springs. Wouldn’t want to live in Alamosa again: to windy and dusty, dry and cold, and nothing going on! Do miss my walks down river path and viewing the stars in the dark sky.
Our family moved to Alamosa in 1957 from Sanford. Went to Eastside grade school, Evan’s Junior high, then Alamosa high school. In the 10 th grade we moved into the new high school on Victoria St. Graduated in 1968, left and only returned to visit family a few days each year. Dad passed in 2021, we sold his houses in East Alamosa in 2023. Sad ending to good memories. It was always great to see Mount Blanca in the distance and know you are home. Thanks for sharing your video with us. Bill Morgan
Thank you so much for this video, you have no idea what it means to me!!! I was born in Alamosa and graduated from AHS in 1982. To be able to see things as they were in '87 brings back so many wonderful memories for me, but at the same time it's kinda hard to watch! So many things in this video are gone now and some of the buildings the City of Alamosa has gotten rid of is such a shame. How things have changed! I hope you never delete this from TH-cam, as I always come back to it! Jeff B.
This will always be home to me! Best memories of my life..the old Jr. High on Main Street. Basketball games and Rios Cafe. Will retire back near there someday.
Thanks!!! You can't believe how much Alamosa has changed in the last couple years. I am adding a new vid, "Back In Time, 2008". Be sure to watch and let me know what you think. Don't forget to rate it!
My Grandparents bought the Best Western (2:56) in 1970 or '71. My Dad owned the Medicine Chest (2:16). We moved to Alamosa in '71 and I graduated in '88. I left in the fall of '88 and have only been back a few times since. Can't say I miss it all that much but it's still a good town.
Thanks for the memory! I arrived at ASC in 1987, and this clip is a complete memory of my first trip through town, it was August 1987. I had a great time at ASC and will never forget Alamosa and the greatest people on earth that live there. I hope my kids go to ASC-go Indians(I mean Grizzlies). What a great little community in a great state. Ps. I miss the campus Cafe too.
Just a interesting fact: The Sonic drive-in at 2:40 in was the very one used in the movie Vacation staring Chevy Chase. It's the brief scene where the food try breaks the Griswold's window. It had been torn down and moved to a new location a few years ago.
You're welcome. I loved the Spudnut Shop. It was a big part of my growing up (not to mention many lunches when I was going to Alamosa Jr. High school before it was Ortega Middle School). You could buy awesome Spudnut and Raise donuts, not to mention some of the most unique candy selection that Alamosa had to offer at that time. Thank your grandma (which I still see from time to time) for such a great memory!
Gawd I miss those times.......... and I miss the 80's. I spent my entire youth living in Alamosa. Sad to know it's changed so much. So many Fantastic Memories. I use to love going to A & W where yes, you could get the best crunchy burritos. So bad for you, but soooooo good. LOL
i love this video but i go back way further long before alamosa had the gasamat, k-mart and city market. in the 1950's when i was priviledged to live there, times were good. i remember when the A&W first opened and the Alamosa Drive-In theater was just down highway 160 close to the old speedway and just a bit further than Carroll's Potatio Chip factory. And it was the Alamosa Maroons, not the Mean Moose. Good Times
I assume that you are from here. This is a beautiful place and just to let you know that if you've lived here, you can leave here....But it's always home
I thought that you might be for here. The town has turned into a city in less than 5 years and people from can't believe the difference. It is really an amazing place.
Very true!! My wife is from here "Manassa", I tried when we first got together to get her to move but to no avail. Ive been here since 95' and cant imagine living anywhere else. We had our first date at that Sonic you showed. Wow!! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for your kind words. The pool is called Splashland and it was heated by natural hot artesian spring water. It is in the process of being considered for demolition. Things have changed.
wow! i havent been in over 15 years i used to go every summer to visit my grandfather in Manassa and would take trips to Alamosa, my brother went to Adam State and i remember the A&W as a kid, i actually kept a mug from there and i think my mom still has it that was about 35 yrs ago
I was the clown that use to go to all the Safeway stores and Alamosa was one of my many stops. This was in the late sixties. Keep a smile, ZEEZO the Clown
wow i lived there from 2001 - 2007 and i loved it i want to move back so bad but money they still have aumish ppls livn there it funny couse my dad worked for them and they didnt let him use power tols lol and the cafe by red rocks is tht still there tht place is amazing
@blueyes6474 i live here and i love it its so amazing u can see the stars go to the mountains sand dunes everything is here except for malls and stuff u will like small town joy
Yeah, I know the Gastons. I was a friend of Jeff's growing up. Used to hand out with Greg at the bowling alley on Tues. nights because our mom's were in the same bowling league, back in the 60's.
This is so nostalgic and wonderful. I'm not from Alamosa but it sure made me want to visit! I feel the same way about Windsor Colorado where we lived when our children were little. Hey could you tell me what music this is in the video? It is so beautiful!!
I love this video but it makes me so sad. I wish this community had some pride and would quit "getting rid" of its history. AHS/OMS will live forever in my memory and my heart.
hi, im going to adams state college in this town next year, ive never been here before and im really exited, is it stil as nice today as it looks like it was back then? :) from all the comments on this video i can see its a much loved place :)
@blueyes6474 - It has changed quite a bit but for the better. You'll like Adams, I went to college there and I loved it. Alamosa is a nice place to live.
U need to visit. Alamosa has changed a lot just in the last couple of years. I'll tell you what, I will vid the city (yes, city) and post it so you'll see the changes. The old Alamosa is gone.....even the old Power Plant that was by the water tower is gone!
Obvious U have issues. Good that UR the victim and Alamosa is the villian. I used to feel the way U do but move away and stay away for a while, maybe Denver, hey try N.Y.C., and then come back & find out that there are people here that actually care, even if it is in passing. I would bet U would think different. It is obvious that U need to do some growing up.
My grandfather is Isaac P.Ortega of Ortega Middle School. This video reminded me of the great summers we spent in Colorado with out grandparents.
Thank you for this video. I never thought that I'd ever get to see my hometown the way it used to be.
Makes me homesick and grateful. ;)
Thank you. I spent every summer with my Grandparents in the San Luis Valley. I still remember the A&W Drive inn. I would go to Kelloff's with my Grandad every Sat for whatever Granma needed. I ALWAYS got one of the suckers in the jar at check out.

@@Firewirerob Yes, we are Cousins. My Mom taught at the Junior High School for 22 years.
I’m only 11, I used to live here with my mom. It’s crazy to see it this way. I really miss this place.
Thank you! I cried as I remembered simpler times without much fear and pain. Thank you so much!
