- After a wonderful 10 weeks looking after gorgeous Tilly the cat in Praia del Rey, it was time to leave Portugal!
We took a Flixbus to Lisbon and were there to see the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
We also stayed in our first hostel dormitory since February 2020, as we found the prices in Lisbon in April had shot right up!
Lisbon is a beautiful city and we have had so many amazing experiences there.

We spent an amazing 10 weeks housesitting the beautiful Tilly in Praia del Rey in February-April 2024. When we left Portugal, we were fortunate enough to be in Lisbon for the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution 🇵🇹♥️
We spent 2 wonderful years in Portugal from 2020 to 2022, and made loads of videos.

Hello Mandy and Lee, it's me again. I have a lot in common with this video as I was in Lisbon on April 25, 1974 onboard Her Majesty's Canadian Warship Iroquois during the Carnation Revolution. Canada’s relationship to the coup was purely by chance. NATO naval Exercise Dawn Patrol was scheduled to start on the morning of 25 April. On 16 April, HMC Ships Preserver, Huron, Iroquois, Assiniboine, and Annapolis departed Halifax for Lisbon. They and other NATO vessels rendezvoused in Lisbon on 23 April for pre-exercise briefings and a two-day port visit. It wasn't a joyous moment for me as I was injured by the Portuguese military and hospitalized for 2 weeks. I never hold a grudge as I visit Portugal regularly and enjoy the people immensely. Your favourite fan, Mike.
Hi Mike 👋 What an amazing story that you witnessed the events unfold first hand in such a way. Sorry that you were injured and I hope it wasn't too serious and debilitating.
I often wondered what the stance of the rest of the world was towards this revolution as although Salazar was a dictator it was in the thick of the cold war and Western governments feared the spread of communism.
We could tell by the passion of the people how important it was to them and what a relief it finally was to rid themselves of such a long entrenched dictator.
@@FrugalTravellers Who would ever imagine that one of your ardent followers was caught up in the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974. Thank you for your videos, stay safe and please take care of each other.
@@mikemurphy2112 Absolutely incredible! We were very fortunate to be in Lisbon to witness it as we had a flight out the following day. Otherwise we'd have been in our remote house sit and missed all the fun. 🙏
Hi Mandy & Lee 😊 Thanks for sharing as this video reminds us of One of our best roadttip with our motorbike (honda varadero❤) from Grrece almost15years ago!! It seems like yesterday as the memories are still so much alive. We just loved everything in Portugal !!!
@@farahkhelifi4398 That's so wonderful to hear, Farah. We're so pleased this video brought back such happy memories. Thank you for sharing them with us 🙏🤗♥️🇵🇹
Olá Mandy & Lee. I've taken the bus back to Lisboa from Peniche. So easy, isn't it. And the buses really are quite nice!
To further expand on the Carnation Revolution, the carnations were actually purchased by a woman by the name of Celeste Caeiro, who taking them back to the restaurant she worked at... they were to celebrate their 1-year anniversary that day. She was, of course, unaware of the what was about to happen. Because of the coup, the restaurant had to close, but to celebrate the revolution she started giving carnations to all the soldiers... and they started placing them in their rifle muzzles. Very few shots were fired that day...
I can't imagine oranges at $1.30 a Kilo. Crazy, eh!
I can't believe you filmed at the Fonte Luminosa!! Whenever I drove in to Lisboa for the day (I always parked at the underground parking at Martim Moniz)... I would always pass the park with those incredible fountains. It's an incredibly beautiful landmark in Alameda, built in 1940, I believe. Saudades!
@@JenShea Wow... thank you so much for your awesome comment, Jen! The Carnation Revolution was incredible, and we so appreciate you sharing this brilliant information 🙏🤗♥️
How lovely to see Lisbon again :)
Yay 🎉🎉 We never tire of Lisbon either. ❤️
Hi Mandy and Lee! Our first European trip was to Lisbon right after Portugal lifted the covid restrictions. Airfare and accomodations were soooo inexpensive then. Anyways, our bnb was on Rua Augusta and every day we walked thru the Rua Augusta Arch to the Tagus just to take it all in. That was 3 years ago and I'm still completely smitten. 😊. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!! Take care and be safe!🤗🐕
What a wonderful opportunity to see Lisbon at a brilliant price and to soak in the whole city centre area. ❤️. We stayed right downtown during COVID also and it was so cheap. 🙏. Things are changing considerably now it's becoming so popular.
Understandably. Lisbon really is amazing 😍
What a great time to be in Lisbon! Looks like quite a party.
@@carolinacadabra8278 It was brilliant, Carolina! Everyone was celebrating, and in such wonderful spirits ♥️🥳🇵🇹
Love this! Such good prices 😊❤
@@julespastor8149 We're so pleased you enjoyed this video, Jules. Thank you for your great comment 🙏🤗
The fountain at the park was an incredible find. It is sad that beautiful buildings all over Portugal are in ruins. I just want to save them all! I'm hoping that one day the government will introduce a golden Visa program for rehabilitating derelict buildings. It would really help with the housing shortage ❤
@@MirandaHorger That is a brilliant idea, Miranda! There are just so many beautiful old buildings sitting in prime locations, just falling to pieces, so it would be great to have them restored and lived in once more! Thank you so much for your great comment! 🙏❤️🇵🇹
Thank you for your videos. You're such a lovely couple. I wish you much success with your channel!
Thank you so much 🙏🙏. We really appreciate your support and feedback. ❤️
Thank you, thank you, thank you both for this video on the 50th anniversary of the carnation revolution. 🎉 It was our goal to move to PT in time for this unique day but my health woes kicked in which changed our priorities. 😢 I truly appreciated this video! 💓
Lisbon looked rather chill considering this special day. Must be the Portuguese way I reckon. Wish we were there and maybe bumped into you both-who knows?!?!?
Safe and healthy travels to you both.

@@lucchese20 Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Maurice. I'm sure we'll bump into you at some stage, somewhere in this glorious world of ours 🙏🤗♥️
I lived on the 28 tram route in Alfama in 89/90. This began my love affair with Portugal (Porto now) and apart from visits home to family in Australia, I have never left. All the best on your travels❤.
@@lisacraig4585 Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Porto is absolutely magical so I have some city envy there 🤗🇵🇹♥️. We'll be back on the Silver Coast in October-November, and maybe in a few years we'll find a house-sit in beautiful Porto 🙏🙌
@@FrugalTravellersI would love to meet up. Will look out for your return❤.
@@lisacraig4585 We might ask you to look out for house-sits for us in a couple of years 🤗♥️🇵🇹
Looks great, I must visit at some time. My brother in law lives there! Take care and stay safe 🙏❤🇬🇧
Thank you 🙏 It is a wonderful city and well worth a visit. This video just shows a small aspect too. There's so much to see. 😍
Love Lisbon .. you guys should get a windsock for your mic .. make a huge difference. Cheers
Thanks 🙏 We definitely need to fix the mic problem. 🙏
Hello. The hostel where you stay is in the same bulding that my school.
@@LuisSantos-us1ww Oh my word, Luis... that's incredible! 🤗🇵🇹🙏
The "wait until the last minute" approach to revealing your gate is a feature of all London airports. I've run through Heathrow and Gatwick as well. Enjoyed the viedo.
@@dave.wendy.wander Oh no! We found it quite stressful, especially with the super long queue for Immigration AND the fact that 2 planes were sitting right beside each other and were leaving at almost the same time! We're so pleased you enjoyed the video, thank you for your lovely comment 🙏🤗
Brilliant - Love the Video - Yourself Mandy and Lee are Wonderful - Fantastic Channel Full of Information and Brilliant Views of Different Places in The World - You Both Take Care and Thank You ❤❤
Thank you so much for all your kind words, Karen. We really appreciate all the love and support. It drives us on to keep making videos and showing the world to all. 🙏❤️🙏
@@FrugalTravellers You and Lee do a Fantastic job as your channel is amazing ❤️❤️
Oh, I live just a few blocks away from Alameda and the Fonte Luminosa! Would have been so fun to bump into you. Nike did an ad there that you can find here on TH-cam where they scrubbed all the identifying signage from the neighborhood, but when you see the fountain at the end, you recognize it for sure.
@@amberalexander7756 That's so cool, Amber... it would have been fun to have bumped into you 🤗🙌 It's such a great park and area 🇵🇹♥️
Hi Mandy & Lee,
The hostel owners clearly made a mistake by renting rooms while not finished.
The negatives reviews don't reflect the finished hostel which seems to be done now.
Airport taxes / city taxes, it's getting ridiculous, what's next? Breathing taxes??
Let's hope you enjoyed your 10 weeks in Portugal despite the weather.
it wasn't just there, most of the western Europe had a long and wet spring.
Enjoy ur weekend, catch you guys later 🤗
@@SERGIO-cr6uy Hello SERGIO, and thank you for your wonderful comment.
Well spotted for noticing the theme of the negative reviews... I am so pleased we disregarded them, as it really was the best option in Lisbon in April, especially as it was so close to Arroios metro station and we could walk straight down the main road to the centre of Lisbon!
We had such a lovely 10 weeks in Portugal... I wanted to video more but Lee was concerned that we were getting too far behind, and that we'd just be covering old ground and that people wouldn't be interested.
I'll definitely cover new ground when we're back in Portugal in October-November... I won't video any buffets, ok, maybe just one for the new viewers, but I'll find new things to share with you.
Next year we're planning to go to Central America and the Caribbean, and South America and North America in 2026... but I'm hoping to return to Portugal in 2027. You know us... we like to plan ahead 😁😂
Thank you again, and we hope you have an awesome weekend. My sister Annie and I are flying to Thailand tomorrow, and I've got some packing and videoing to do before we leave Perth 🦘🤗 ~ Mandy
@@FrugalTravellers Hi Mandy, so if I understood correctly last week you were in India, then flew back to Perth by yourself, Lee went back to England to spend time w/ his family.
Tomorrow you & ur sis Annie (the lemon lady) will head to Thailand, It that it?
Gosh that's a lot of flights you guys have taken the past 12 months. No wonder why you took a break from vlogging while in Portugal.
I can't even plan my next meal that you guys are already planned your trips for 2027!!! 😉
Alright, catch you guys later 🙋🏻♂️
Wishing you a nice time with ur sis
@SERGIO-cr6uy Hi SERGIO 👋
Yes, I flew back to Perth on the 13th and am heading to Thailand tomorrow with Annie, she of the incredible lemon tree and the lovely backyard that features in many of my Journey to Wellness vlogs 🤗🍋 I'm planning to make real time Shorts of our Thailand trip, and also make helpful introduction to Thailand vlogs as well, so we'll see how they go... I'm not very good at keeping to a plan or any type of structure 😂🤣
Lee's still in India, up in the mountains. He flies back to the UK on the 18th September, but before that he'll be meeting up with our friend Geoff, from the last Nazaré video, and who'll also be in an upcoming Fort Kochi (India) video.
I'll join Lee in the UK for 2 weeks to catch up with family, and then we'll fly to Portugal for 6 weeks, before flying back to the UK for another 2 weeks.
We'll fly to Perth early December for 5 weeks, to spend time with family over Christmas, and then to NZ for a couple of months to stay with Ma and Gazza in Auckland, and up north in our off-grid hut... and there we'll be planning our trip to Central America and the Caribbean.
We'll be making different types of videos over that period, but I'll still make videos with practical information and prices for travelling in Perth and NZ on a budget... and featuring the practicalities of our off-grid life. Hopefully people will still enjoy these videos, as we have a wonderful 6 months ahead of us 🤗😍
Have a great weekend, and thank you so much for your wonderful comments and support 🙏🤗
Thank you, thank you thank so both so much for this video of Lisbon on the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution!! It was our goal to move to PT before this unique event but my health had other plans 😢 so our relocation plans have to be postponed to another time. I truly appreciate your review. 💓
Surprisingly Lisbon looks rather chill considering the unique and historic day it was. Maybe the Portuguese way of life? Wish we were there and maybe could have seen you both-who knows?!?
Safe and healthy travels to you both.
