    In this video I talk about one of the top questions I get from new sharpeners. I know when I started I felt the same way as many of you who have asked me about how to get proper angles many people struggle on the Tormek to get specific angles. I show you a few ways to get around using the Tormek angle master. Then I compare it to what happens in the real world and real customers who will come to see you for sharpening and tell you why you really don't need to worry about it much. I have included links below to most of the items in this video that I use if there is something you are interested in that I forgot to include a link for let me know.

    If I can make a suggestion Paul. As you know, I’m a newbie and I’m sure many others are new watching your videos as well.
    If I can suggest concerning the CBN or even what’s on your tarmac, they’re ready to sharpen, simply summarize this CBN wheel is this grit, also on this machine is a compass wheel. Because we the audience, even after looking at your transcripts, don’t know the grit of your CBN.
    I remember a professor once tell me never assume the audience knows what you’re talking about.
    Thank you, Phil

      I have many videos that say what I use and recommend if you only want to start with one wheel for the Tormek I say get a 600 CBN if you want to do a 2 wheel process then get a 200 CBN and a 1000 CBN

    Thanks for sharing . . . Comfort & connivance is important in safety gear. I look at knife cutting edge damage in search of the ideal cutting edge angle. Blade steel quality & knife user skills levels are often revealed in cutting edge damage.

    I love that feature on the mask!!! You're inspiring me to follow a dream I've always wanted to try and I have a great career in pharma... but I live to sharpen "stuff" of any sort

      That's great Lou it's been a great retirement job for me. I can work as much as I want. I have a lot of customers. Like you I really enjoy sharpening. My business that started out as just a way to make a little extra money has become a full time job buy choice and I truly believe this can be done just about any place. In my area there are other sharpeners but there is so much work we don't really affect each other. One actually just retired so I have been even more busy because I have picked up many of his customers

    I had my first customer ask me about the recomended angle today. I told him I do 20⁰ for most knifes and he was perfectly fine with it. I did 6 benchmades for him.

    I've done a lot of fiberglass and woodwork on boats over the years. I've tried many different brands of mask. Luckily I got those silicone 3M mask years ago when they came out. They are the best for me. I wear a Medium mask. Problem I have with 3M masks is the straps are super expensive. Even if you buy a multi-pack of straps that only reduces the cost slightly. I feel the strap is probably worth about maybe $8, but I cannot find the strap assembly anywhere for less than about $28. And no one makes an aftermarket version that I can find. The silicone mask last for years and years, but the straps last only a year or two of regular use. I typically have issue with the plastic part that goes at the top of your head.

      I think I found a two pack for 16 bucks on Amazon I’ll check but I agree the straps you would think would be easier to find and for far less money then the cost of an entire new mask - I’ll post the link if I find it.

    Hello Paul,
    I really enjoy your videos and thanks again for your service.
    I have been wanting to get the Tormek 8 for almost two years and after looking at your videos, I’m about to get me one but I wanted to ask how you feel about the Rikon 82-100.
    Thank you,
    Eddie

      I have not seen any wet grinders that are as good as Tormek. Tormek is really in a class of its own but I have not seen the Rikon 82-100 up close.

    How do you get the diamond spray to stay on the stropping belt? I've sprayed it on my 1x30 strop and I see it visibly come off in the LED light I have pointed at the belt. You use a alcohol base diamond spray? Another great video, thank you!

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I use Alcohol based or Tormek paste. Some is going to come off. I put it on and give it a few minutes to dry. Since I make my own it's cheap so I don't mind reapplying every so often. I do wear a mask when using it so I don't breath in diamond and I also have a vacuum hood behind it to pull loose dust

    I’m curious what makes you prefer a CBN wheel over diamond on the Tormek

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like not having to grind in water it makes changing wheels fast and one less expense as I don’t need to use the water treatment for the diamond wheels ever day that said I do own the diamond wheels and use them but for me owning a sharpening service I save mine for super steel knives and ceramic and chisel. I also like the feel of CBN while grinding and it’s less expensive if your buying Spartan Wheels from Wood Turner’s Wonders

    May i ask if the leather strop is running top to bottom or bottom to top?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mine is running bottom to top in this video but that’s because my 1x30 is custom made and has a motor that can run both directions. Stropping is always done edge trailing or from the spine of the knife going towards the edge. The other direction is called edge leading and you can sharpen either way but stropping is always,always,always, edge trailing no matter what you’re doing it on so that you don’t cut into the leather.

    Hi there! I just found this channel. One question - how does the best result on CBN+Poly strop compares to Tormek 220/1000 wheel + Japanese 4K stone?
    I wonder if I will get a better results with CBN. I never got good with Tormek leather strop. What I do is just 220 stone and finish on 4K. I keep both stones on a same diameter, so it’s just a stone swap.
    I am curious if it can be improved with strop

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am a huge fan of CBN it cuts much fast than the Tormek 200/1000 stone and as far as using the Japanese WS as a hone I haven’t ever done a comparison but I find that CBN makes a stronger burr and I have found the Tormek Leather for me works better than the synthetic, but my new favorite is using the 1x30 belt sander with a leather strop and Diamond Spray but have also had good results using Tormek Paste on the 1x30 strop. I only grind In water when using my Tormek Diamond Wheels. before using the 1x30 I also used the Ken Onion Elite to strop on. I have gotten far better results using CBN and definitely can recommend it.

      Hi, just use CBN 200 and CBN 1200 from Woodturners wonders. But use the 1200 grit just for a microbevel (no need to polish whole rough bevel, just its point). For example main bevel 15 degrees per side and microbevel with 20 degrees per side.
      Then strop not on tormek's leather wheel but on some different polishing mashine with speed spinning wheels and diamond compound. That way you can sharpen a knife much quicker (one dull knife in one minute)

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daniel.rosina I think I will test this with 400 and 1000 CBN since I own them Do you do this regularly? How is the edge retention and do you have a fast way of doing your second angle. is it a certain number of turns of the Tormek wheel to go from from 15 to 20 degrees?

      @@ALXSHARPEN however I have different setup than him -> he has two tormek-like machines to have 2 stones in water. But as I use 2 CBN wheels, I can have it just on one Tormek based on this video (it saves time, as you do not need to change the wheels): th-cam.com/video/BAhgVmQoeiA/w-d-xo.html

    Pretty hard to argue that a belt grinder is better than a Tormek. Belt grinders are for shaping and heavy material removal. Not sharpening. Even the worksharp belt grinder is nice, but doesn’t compare to a Tormek. Water cooled sharpening system engineered in Sweden? Nothings better. Anyone that says otherwise is just bitter that they can’t financially justify one. Precision stone sharpening systems are great but not even close to as versatile as a Tormek.

      J. Neilson sharpens his own knives with a belt sander, and he is one of the best bladesmith's in the world. Maybe you should tell him he is doing it wrong.

      Maybe you're bitter bc you bought something you think is the best, and don't like hearing it when people tell you it isn't. It hurts your ego. Guess what, It isn't. Maybe it beats a belt sander, but it doesn't make it the best system, and the difference is not gonna be noticeable.
