One of the many things I appreciated about Mr. Nimoy is that he convinced the producers of the movie, Undiscovered Country, to pay Deforrest Kelly a million dollars for the role of Dr.McCoy. Before that time I never knew that De was grossly underpaid compared to Shatner and Nimoy.
Deforest Kelly was really the base of the original series. The anchor. The straight man. He was brought in because he was a veteran actor. You could see he was more on point and glued the show together.
In his autobiography, Leonard Nimoy called DeForest Kelley "the rock upon which much of Star Trek stands". You could see the strong affection and respect Nimoy had for "Bones"
I still have some audio cassette and record stories he narrated during the 60's. I kept them to listen to his voice. Also kept some narrated by James Doohan, Walter Koenig, and David McCallum.

And I must say, Ricardo Mantalban was the PERFECT villain. This film holds the gold standard of Trek and space movies as of today October 7 2017!!!!!

We know that Satan can take many forms and is always looking for an opening to take us down. Including promising to take away our pain as Sybok did. Early in the story we notice that many characters are ROUTINELY using G-ds name in vain. As the story unfolds they realize they shouldn't be doing that. Sybok truly believed that he'd found G-d only to find out that he'd been duped. Spock was torn 3 ways between obeying the "god of Shakarie" , his captain , and his love for his brother leading to his brother hijacking the Enterprise. And yes , I too believe it was a bit too humanistic. However, I try to see G-ds hand in everything. Both holy and secular. At the end of the movie we see once bitter enemies coming together to defeat the evil of the false god and then drinking and socializing together. I believe G-d wants us ALL to live and work together in harmony and that G-d is everywhere , including as Captain Kirk said in our hearts.

Well it's true in real life as well (and reflecting real life is generally good acting.) Most assholes walking around out there don't believe inside their own minds that they're assholes, even when they're out there doing F'd up stuff.
I could never take Montalban seriously as a villain - thought then and now that the role was miscast - about the same as George Hamilton or Roger Moore would have been - waaaaaaaay too much pretty boy/playboy-on-the-Riviera vibe. The fact they had the balls to consciously do a middle aged exploration of your good looking hero, rather than recast or ignore like Bond, exploring where that can lead a person (in a space exploration themed franchise), and at end the glory of life in it's conclusion with "I feel young" is one of the many reasons this film is not only my favourite but objectively worthy of an analysing academia's top 25 films of all time. Only the fact it belongs to a franchise where people have pre conceived notions (and a sequel to boot) make this an oblivious or dismissed conclusion.
This is GREAT! And the montage at the end is really spectacular. Great and moving montage. Then at 10:19 the cast/crew picture is awwwesome on its own - but then holding up a picture of the "departed Spock" (presumably as the shoot was wrapping) - priceless!
Yes but the version you saw was not the Nicholas Meyer version. Paramount made him change the ending and Meyer refused so they shot it without him. The Original Movie had Spock die and that was it. They screened it for a test audience and cried at the end but the Studio heads said it was too depressing. They asked Nick Meyer to shoot some more footage giving the Audience some home but he refused so they did it without him
Wonderful interviews, such a talented cast. Head and shoulders this was and remains the best Trek film ever made. Was such a treat to see it again on the big screen during the 35th Anniversary last year!!!

We can only wonder what would've happened if Alley continued her role as Saavik throughout ST3 & 4. I quite liked Robin Curtis' performance too, but I wish Alley had stayed on the role of Saavik, with Curtis co-appearing as an entirely different full-Vulcan character! Now that would be the Best of Both Worlds(pun intended!)
I think today we are maybe underestimating how much an actor brings to the role and just to the quality of a film. In these interviews I see seasoned actors, who are intelligent and experienced enough to portray a character in a way that isn't two-dimensional. I feel the same way when I see interviews with the TNG cast. The new movies however are more an example of the opposite, the actors I feel are just there to do their lines.
In the Original series in the episode "SPACE SEED" Fact Checkov was not in the Series yet. In STAR TREK II Kahn says to CHECKOV I never forget a face Mr Checkov
this was discussed and the consensus is the chekov was a part of the crew however not yet promoted to be on the bridge... so khan would have came across him even though he was not a "prominent" member of the crew

However, I do agree that Hollywood and modern culture can tend to be unnecessarily ageist (prejudice against certain ages or age-ranges for no reason.) One great example being check out Silicon Valley in America. Besides the big business bosses (which tend to be older but you still see a lot of young "tech" bosses compared to other industries) they are highly prejudice (when hiring) against even being 30 or older. They hire 21 year olds straight out of college like crazy, thinking the young are always more innovative AND they are cheaper, lol... They act like you're an old man over there if you're not in your early 20s. Obviously there's always exceptions and results may vary, but on the whole, in general, on average, this is pretty much true and there's many, many first-hand accounts backing this narrative up.

Did tthey miss stuff like this?ertainly in the 23rd century for a Star Fleet Admiral.
During the scene Dr. McCoy gives Kirk the glasses, Kirk states that he is allergic to whatever it is they use to correct eyes. The fact that there is seemingly no other way to correct eyes or to get glasses is odd, but they did have an in-universe reason for the glasses.
I always laugh when people think they can tell 100% for sure either way... No amount of experience is a guarantee that you're always right, myself included ;)

This came out when I was stationed at Lowry AFB for tech school. A bunch of us stormed the local cinema and had a blast watching this.
