- The 1976 2- vinyl LP set "Space Metal" was a compilation of material taken from UFO's first three albums-the only albums recorded with the original line-up of guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way, drummer Andy Parker, and vocalist Phil Mogg.
The first two were studio albums, while the third was the bands first live album, recorded in Japan.
Personal favorite tracks-in fact my favorites of all of the bands works-are the tracks "Flying" at 26+ minutes and "Star Storm" at 18+ minutes (both originally from the bands second album "Flying"). True space rock!!!

I started listening to UFO Backstreet in 1983 when Making Contact came out. I was Just a 13 year old kid and was hooked.
I started buying their récords, and no matter who is on guitars, UFO remain my fav band up to today.
Mick Bolton, Michael Schenker, Paul Chapman, Atomic Tommy, Laurence Archer and finally Vinnie Moore......all brought their superbness to UFO.
I today own each and every récord by UFO......Just a mesmerising and great band.
When I 1st heard these space metal ufo songs, my older brother had the album,s and Acid, Lsd... I thought you guys were god ! U know now I'm still liking, playing these space metal songs, while I drink beer only,

Mick Bolton is UFO for me. I used to play along with this album often and by the time I got to c'mon everybody, my fingers were cut too!

Classic. Leaves one nostalgic for the time in America when music artistry was pure and for its own sake.

The first 3 UFO albums were dang hard to get in the U.S. until they re-issued them. The first 3 had their own distinct style and sound. I never even found them until like 1977 at a record store in Colorado.

Yes-i'm thinking that 1976 is right around when I found this one, but not sure the 3 originals were around here in the U.S. at that time. I particularly love the 'Flying' album with its 'ridiculously long jams' for that very reason. It was really great 'sit back and take it all in' listening for night-time for sure....

Spending my teenage years in the early 70s UFO was one my first favorite bands, mainly their first three records including the best LIve Album ever recorded (in my humble opinion)knocked me off my feet. Saw them live in my hometown of Nuremberg , Germany in 1975.
Yeah, for me too there is just something special with those original first 3 albums....all tied up with my youthful teenage years as well....

I'm not familiar with this album, it's really good I like UFO, when I was young my brother turned me on to UFO, they are an excellent band, Paul Chapman taught me how to play guitar, I miss him very much all the stories of all the bands and the musicians he knew. In his studio he had a lot of pictures of musicians like Kurt hammett, lemmy, iron maiden, rob halfords, defend leppard, bands and musicians that loved UFO, I remember paul Chapman saying he loved Gary Moore. Miss you Paul Chapman.

Flying, Silverbird, and Starstorm have always been my favorite UFO songs. Although Flying lyrically describes sinking into the Earth, instead of Flying through space. It reminded me of a really bad drug trip I had, which left me feeling like gravity was crushing me into the Earth. For 2 years I felt like I was in quicksand. I wrote a song about the sensation years ago , but when I heard UFO - Flying the music was perfect for the trip I was suspended in

yeah ... a compilation of the first three albums UFO 1 UFO 2 and UFO Live !! Mick Bolton one of the best hard-rock guitarists in that era. My opinion is that M. Schenker never gets this level .......
It's funny how Uriah Heep and UFO both released renditions of Come Away Melinda the same year.
I think Schenker & Bolton were both great. Schenker was only 17 in 1972.

I love UFO with Mick Bolton. All respect for Michael Schenker and his work with UFO, but somthing was missing there, UFO became pop-rock band and even a disco group.
Schenker is probably technically a better player, but my favorite UFO album has been 'Flying' for maybe 4 decades now and I don't see that changing at this stage of the game! I wish Bolton had stayed around and made more albums like 'Flying' with the band. Funny I read that both Phil Mogg and I believe Pete Way kind of disowned 'Flying', which I just don't get. Of course there far less of Phil's vocals on that album than on any other UFO record ever made since there's instrumentals and long instrumental jams that make up the majority of the album..
I respect your opinion, but, have you heard "Strangers In The Night"? Many consider it the best live album, ever!.
@@miguelbarahona6636 pNo.I was live in concert UFO 1981 and waiting for music from first 4 albums likr FLYING or another old songs.But is not coming.Only playing this STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT live same like double album.I want something more but not coming old songs.Concert was 2 or 2.5 hours

Funny but I also left the old LP behind years ago when I moved. I simply re-created the track list from the bands early albums on CD. I do love that cover art though...

Prince Kajuku instead of reference to the pentagram call it a star in a circle. I am pretty sure that the basic arrangements for Prince Kajuku transformed into Mother Mary.

Everytime I listen to early UFO it makes me hate my parents.
They wouldn't support me to become a musician.
I have kids now. Spent $40,000 in support so she could be somebody. It has made a huge difference. My oldest daughter 16 is very talented. People follow her in highschool. She a leader with charisma.

As far as steppenwolf? they deserve more credit for what hard rock/metal etc...became, and calling RB the grandpa of metal etc... just silly, good band, but hardly original . all my opinion.

To narrow, anything blues based is blues rock, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and like 1000 other bands. It’s more like psychedelic/ progressive.

Im a huge UFO fan who has NEVER heard of this. WHEN was this released, after 1,2, and Flying im assuming
Discogs.com says this originally came out in 1976, which makes sense as that sounds to be around the time I picked it up and around the time that the newer UFO albums were starting to attract more attention and sales. Though I know I bought it as an import, it was technically not released in the U.S. at that time.

Classic psychedelic blues rock - shades of Led Zep & Free! But they trashed the Uriah Heep classic Melinda totally ruining the story line. Otherwise they warm an old Psych Rockers heart.
I too probably first heard 'Melinda' as done by Heep, but they didn't write it-it was already an old song, covered by many musicians and bands-even folk group The Weavers (!). So I don't' know how close to the original (or other versions) either the Heep OR UFO version actually is-it seems it was interpreted very differently over the years by many musicians and bands...
@@rockerzlifevlog7647 A little research shows it was written by the Weavers & covered by many artists - Harry Belafonte, Judy Collins, Bobbi Gentry, given its blues feel by Tim Rose, worked into psych rock by Velvett Fogg & then lifted by Heep! That was a trip in itself, thanks.
