My alkalinity is spiked. Ph is consistently low. It’s a salt water spa. What just lowers alkalinity? Right now the ph is dead on. Alkalinity is spiked. What only lowers alkalinity? 4:59
Hi Jeff, the TA in my spa is very high and when adding the Spa Down the PH drops significantly with minimal affect on the TA. I'm now chasing PH balance by adding PH up which increases my TA back to where I started. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.
Hi Curtis I haven't, but there are some that work. You just have to be careful as anything with epsom salt or oils could damage the hot tub and gunk up the filter. This is a product I've been wanting to try that IS designed for hot tubs and is aromatherapy-based - InSPAration Hot Tub Spa & Bath Aromatherapy Fragrance Assortment (here's the Amazon link if you want to check it out - amzn.to/30ZEmBr) If you get it, let me know how you like it or if you find something better. Jeff
We have a brand new hot tub and atrocious city water. This is the 3rd time to refill our tub and try again. We had our water tested after the most recent refill, alkalinity was over 300. We were instructed to add dry acid, 1 oz at a time every 30 minutes for a total of 26 oz. I can’t wait to see our electric bill. Have you seen alkalinity this high before? What do you recommend?
Hi Rocky I have not seen it that high! That's kind of crazy. For the dry acid, I assume you're using sodium bisulfate? If so, that should work, but to drop the TA from 300 to 100, in a large-ish hot tub, you would need about 35 oz of it. I'm not sure about only adding 1 oz at a time every 30 minutes. That doesn't quite seem necessary to me. But if you're using a different product, that may be necessary. I do know that once you've added it all you would let it circulate (jets on) for 20 minutes. Then turn the jets off and test again after an hour or more. Once you get it somewhere around 100-120 you should be good to then adjust the pH and everything else. But I don't think you need to drain and refill if it doesn't come out right the first time. Once you figure out what works for your water, it will get a whole lot easier in the future. Hope that helps.
Running your jets can raise the ph. I just mix it in a separate bucket of water than add to hot tub, plus let it sit for a couple hours then check it. Alkalinity up works good. Focus on Alkalinity first then ph then chlorine levels. Dont run jets when adding your chemicals.
Thanks for the comment. Because of all the comments I get, and my inability to answer them all in a timely manner, I answered yours in a video scheduled for 2/22/21. Please check it out and thanks for being here! - Jeff
We're in Austin also and our new hot tub has high Alkality and pH, we were going to try the dry acid to lower it. Also have you ever tried Dead Sea Salt Minerals in a hot tub?
It was the darned thing, so my PH was high as in bright red so it needs to come down (or do nothing as you say) if I just add the tinniest amount of Spa Down the PH. falls to yellow. So then I add two tablespoons of baking soda in my 250 gal jacuzzi which draws it back into 7.6 / pink. I'm wondering if this now normal because anytime I add Spa Down the bottom falls out causing the PH to drop into yellow. Any ideas?
Hi Jeff, thanks for the great info, your videos are my go to! Question; can I use PH down to lower alkalinity? (Spa Down is currently out of stock). Thanks Lynne
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't do pH down followed by pH up as that will basically cancel each other out. Check the ingredients in the pH down and see what's there. Most likely it's sodium bi-sulfate. Lower it where you want the alkalinity to be, and then go a little lower still knowing that whatever you add to raise the pH will also impact alkalinity. Then try either Soda Ash (amzn.to/2Dq6ZzP) or Magnesium Oxide powder (amzn.to/30gLhXP) to try and raise the pH. I have tried this and still can't get my alkalinity down I have used almost the whole bottle drained my hot tub today and trying again but still in the same boat nothing is working to bring it down
Thanks for all your videos. We’re new owners of our first....an Artesian Island Barbados. Love it with the snowflakes coming down🥰.so much to learn tho!

Man, I’m trying to get my alkalinity right, but there is no way to fix that lol Some may see start with your alkalinity, but there is no treatment for alkalinity Some say, treat your pH first, and your alkalinity will fall into place. I guess I’ll keep going blind at it
High alkalinity means the acid is low high ph is low acid low ph is high acid. Alway always start with half of what they say its harder to pull a chemical out than put it in. If your ph is high muartic acid start with 40oz and retest in a day if ph is low add baking soda . This is for a pool im talking 10 to 20 thousand gallons.
Do you use a chlorine shock? I used to have that issue using a non-chlorine shock. You might also do a biofilm clean-out if you never have - that eliminates the bacteria buildup inside the pipes. Check out my video on that if you haven't seen it yet - th-cam.com/video/8VxcrdIHtQo/w-d-xo.html

What if PH is good but Alkalinity is high. How do I only lower Alkalinity?

Alkalinity and Ph are a constant balancing act 👍

Great info Jeff, I was wondering if you had ever used aromatherapy products in your hot tub, if so what the pros and cons would be?

After 5 mins I seem to have missed the part where he says how to lower Alkalinity & Stabilizer and keep pH where it is. Anyone know how?

My alkalinity is high but my ph is low how do you address this issue ?
No one can ever answer this, so annoying
what should you do when TA is 130 and PH is 6.7???

Hi Ben. I have not, but I know Epsom salts are bad for hot tubs, so without knowing more about them, I'd recommend not doing that.

Thank you!!
When i add Acid to lower ph it seems to lower alkalinity as well
Hi Jeff, thanks for the great info, your videos are my go to! Question; can I use PH down to lower alkalinity? (Spa Down is currently out of stock). Thanks Lynne
Thanks! pH down will definitely impact alkalinity. It just might lower the pH to a larger degree. But it should work!
Hot Tub Owner HQ I have tried it and it seems to work until I use the ph plus to sort the ph. Then the alkalinity seems to just go back up again 🙃
