That is a sweet sound. Company I used to work for did deep maintenance on these. There was always an audience when they arrived. And departed.

Loved seeing this video, thanks for posting it. My father worked at De Havilland Downsview in the late 50's/early 60's and often talked about the Caribou .

Damn this aircraft looks intense! (initial viewing)
Love the top view! The throttle lever position is awesome
It has an overhead mounted gull wing design? What?!! How awesome!
Damn look at that yaw on takeoff
holy crap! Thank you so much for posting this.
Wow! The flaps down, washout...the black "heat guards?" incredible!
    Thank you!

Nicely done. Looks like she's in good shape. Enjoyed flying the "Mighty Bou" in Vietnam. Rarely used full (40 degrees) of flap. It would only get you 1-3 knots on final and noticeable loss of aileron (the ailerons roll down as full-span, double-slotted flaps past 15 degrees). Also, tricky in case of a go-around. Really bad if the flaps hung up on go-around. 30 degrees sufficed in most cases.

A Twin Otter that has had it's testicles descend. I think I need to visit Addison in the spring.

I am surprised that he didn't dab the wheel brakes whilst they were retracting?

I have a lot of respect for the 'Bou drivers' flying at such extreme nose down attitudes, I would abort every time lol, apparently in full flaps there are linkages to elevator trims which put her in that nose low attitude - it's insane

actually there is a wheel , approx 20 inch dia, on the pilot right to control pitch. Very manual pitch control.
The "lift" was just as a sail plane, tremendous. you had to actually force the aircraft down to land. Fully feather-able and reversible props ,landing is insanely short and takeoff also.
I was an aircraft electrician on them in Phucat RVN in 1969

Get low n slow cos it's ok; do a takeoff with 30 degrees of flaps...and headwind a/c leaps in the air short run...and one can do 0/0 t/off,just keep centerline between ur legs..

Yeah these things are ugly as hell. And that makes them even more remarkable today. This "all american" feeling.

Given it's designed and made in Canada, one could say "all Canadian" feeling. :-)
