I was at a petco and there was a little girl buying a bearded dragon, she was about 8 ish and the employee started rambling on about tank size. The employee said “adults need about 10 gallons” and the girl said “that’s WAY to small are you nuts?” I love that lil girl now 😂❤️
They really do. I went there recently, they didn't have good lighting and the right temperature. Not to mention the poor thing was lethargic and skinny.
Employees can do their own research though. The Petsmart I have down the street takes fantastic care of their animals (believe it or not) and make sure they're fed with the right temps. The employee I'm friends with is currently trying her damned hardest to save a little leopard geckos life and has been successful with saving it. It is possible for a store to gather the right information. The ones that refused to try just don't care.
@@CatTreePaw Hi. Work at Petco here. We can do as much research as we want and share our knowledge with the customers for what's best for any animal/reptile/fish, BUT we have little to no control on how to set them up and feed them in store. We HAVE to go by the planograms or whoever is in charge of the departments (CAL- Companion Animal Leader) can get fired and just replaced with someone who will go by the planograms. Corporate comes into the store to do a walk and we get points off for every little thing that isn't exactly like is in those planograms. (Literally anything under 97 points is bad and you could get a write up). I know you didn't ask for all of that all but this is how it works.
@ Just tagging you so you could see too, lol. I can't speak for all Petco locations, but at my store, everyone knows their stuff and we make sure to communicate with eachother about each small animal/reptile/fish. And we will not make the sale if we feel the animal will be in bad care.
@@CatTreePaw You can't expect employees being paid next to nothing to then take hours of their own time researching all of the different animals at petco and the best thing for every different one. You want to know a simple thing that could make this much easier? Put pamphlets next to each tank/cage for each specific type of animal, a little small area to put helpful and informative pamphlets in that give correct information and stops any mistakes by employees giving the wrong papers. Right there and you'd probably solve a lot since lots of mistakes are made by the wrong papers being given and it'd be relatively cheap. Outside of that, properly train your employees and pay them more, they'll never do that though because they're too greedy for that.
Remember everyone: DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Don’t be lazy and take everything a pet store tells you at face value. Extensive research is the best way to ensure you have the best information
i did research before asking my parents if i could get a beardie found a breeder and he said that they were pymg ones he said they are not for fisrt time reptile people and yet my parents got me a blotch blue tongue from a friend, as soon as i saw the lizard i called her to ask about the temp it need to be at and what he liked to eat she also showed me how to trim the nails. now i have two from her and have had them for over 5 years they are easy to handle but wont be getting anymore until i have a shed up so i can put there cage(big) in there and have heating as well, only got 1 heat lamp so i put it in the middle of the enclouser as i have a divider wall there for my lizards. i was told by the local pet shop in my area that 4foot reptile tank would fit both lizards, yeah they were babies but we i seen them grow bit bigger i started building there enclouser to be bigger now i need to make another one as they want more space enver though they have enough,
Brandon Cosme agreed! There’s really no excuse for being misinformed these days because there’s endless information at our disposal. It’s probably harder just trying to get the *right* information and knowing what’s good and what isn’t
Hermit crabs are not well taken care of either! They put them in painted shells to look cute but in reality they’re being poisoned 😔 petsmart is much better in this area!
Brooke Chance hermit crabs can actually live for 20+ years, but they only survive an average of 6 months in the conditions they endure within stores. This isn’t just pet stores, this is also convenience stores as well. I got my two hermit crabs from a beach store.
Kadri Aalto they actually finally got sued and only have a few mice and a few reptiles etc in each cage now instead of them being jam packed. It was such a nice change
I haven’t gone to petco in over 7 years, every time I need something for my Leo’s or box turtles I go to an actual store that’s meant to sell stuff for reptiles and not just a general pet store.
@@daywalker3735 same, there are only chain stores like petsmart and petco near me, but my petco is full of experienced reptile owners so they know what they’re doing. My local petsmart is full of dummies though lol
If you live in Ohio I recommend going to a place called “Captive born reptiles” they sell stuff for all ranges of reptiles, it’s near a place called “Saraga”
U uncal runs a pet store and there being perfect nothing's wrong with them we live in Ireland im ten and know ALOT about reptiles so he wants me to work with him if I work there for a week I get to choose a reptil I know to breed (we live in Ireland buncrana btw)
this is just sad. I got my leopard geckos from petco, and although they are perfectly healthy, the reptile "specialist" told me that I could put a baby in with an adult
Not a baby but I got two geckos from a friend they are 5 and 7 years old and they can be together for a good amount of time but need to be separated for the majority because just like us humans they can get tired of each other and because of their weak bone structure they can break each other’s face 😬
The Tester gg I would never trust any reptile fish or insect alone with their offspring, as those animal groups tend to eat their young due to them being weaker
Is it weird a feel an urge to go to Petco/PetSmart, ask questions and correct their answers 🤷🤔 Edit: Guys CHILL! I just felt that ME being annoying is better than animals being abused/killed.
Skye's Slimes Yeah! Do that so the employees have even less time to feed and care for the dozen plus animals they’re supposed to be taking care of and that you’re trying to help
I do it all the time. We had a great petsmart for fish care and then no manager basically fired any fish care specialist and basically all of the water systems failed and killed all fish
I did that at pet smart when I went to get a betta. I was only 14 at the time and begged my mom to take me. I had been researching for about 6 months then and my mom had no idea I had been researching, so she asked a lady at the store to help me. The lady gave me a bunch of VERY incorrect information such as they live in tiny 0.25 gallon bowls, they don’t need any sort of heater or filter, they can live in a cup, she even said that if their “tails” are deteriorating, it means they’re just “stressed or just getting used to the new water” (??). It was funny because every time she said something I’d correct her with facts to back me up until she just left and said she’ll get someone else to help me, so we left.
i went into petco and i had to leave because the cats litter box clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a LONG time and i asked the lady why and she said she wasn’t allowed to GIRL WHAT?!!!
i worked at a petco once. and that is a thing... i got yelled at cuz i got SICK of looking at the poor cat with a gross box. i told my boss to grow the fuck up. i left and called AC on them... they closed the next day.... rip store. i mean jail
Same here... but with the puppys in their cages. (I've seen the kittens too at my local petco.. but they had NO litter box!! Just the room in the cage to do their business. And the rest.. the same as what I'm about to say) I asked them where the puppy's where and they showed me, and, I was disappointed and disgusted. There was literally NO room to move for them to move!!! I never asked anything about if their ever let out of the cage (problably not since some look like they have a bone degrowth in their legs.. atleast I think that's what it's called) because I just straight up left. They had poop and pee all over them and the small amount of ground the cage had to offer. Worst part of it is I saw a few with TWO dogs in it!! THEY ARE JUST BABY'S GODDAMIT!!
Bearded Dragon geckos are supposed to be wide bois. They stick to surfaces. They have to be low profile. These things are actually being starved or not fed the right stuff.
NPC #7048164 er they aren’t bearded dragons they’re Leos ( leopard geckos ) and my beardie is awfully big you were correct about that and I have two Leo’s which are terribly smaller than my beardies they aren’t fat and I have been told by me exotic animal vet that they are super healthy
Exactly. I have hamsters and it's SO frustrating that Petco thinks it's ok to house multiple syrian hamsters together yet I often see chinchillas (who actually are social animals and need other chinchillas) that are housed alone! Not to mention that they cut corners on care for their pets.
Petco told me that Bearded Dragons are vegetarians. They also told me a 10 gallon tank would hold a full grown one.😑🤦♀️ They also told me they live about 2 years. Edit: Yes I realize I should have researched more before purchasing my beardie, it’s a mistake I regret dearly, but I don’t regret my short time with my Beardie, he lived 3 years in a far larger rank then they recommended and with a even mix of veggies and insects and died from unknown causes
My pet shop just changed their reptile carpet to calcium sand... I work there and I tried to tell the manager to fix it but she trusts zoomed more than me because I'm new. :/ All the reptiles' humidity is all at 10% too, including the crested geckos, chameleons, frogs, etc. Tried to tell her the soil is too dry but she's worried about mold. We mist them but it just doesn't help if the eco earth is dusty. I don't know why we have hygrometers if we're not abiding by them... Also, the axolotl tank is HEATED. >:( Honestly thinking about quitting, I can see one of the chameleons fading away as it refuses to eat and an anole has an abscess from a stuck shed in its eye. It's so frustrating that she won't listen to me.
@@TheFlippyNioa I recently quit working at a local Petco for almost this exact reason. Poor Pacman frogs died within weeks and I just had to watch. I'd take the little guys in if I didn't know that the store would benefit from it and use the money to buy more
Being a new petco employee myself, I realize now I need to take more personal time into learning about our animals. While I can’t do much about their habitats, I could at least provide the right information for our customers. I was hired with little to no knowledge of animal care, besides my experience with my family dog, and was very briefly told how to feed our reptiles. Tbh I’m not even too fond with handling live crickets yet. Unfortunately, the truth is not all petco employees are experts in all the animals we sell.
I went to petsmart and asked for a Betta heater and the employee said "bettas don't need heaters" keep in mind I'm in Canada and it's cold here. I told her that they do need heaters to thrive but she didn't seem to care. I was 13 and she didn't care to listen to me
I work for Petsmart and we sell a specific heater for Betas. If you came asking in my store I would escort you to it and advise you to even check online to see if it was cheaper because Petsmart price matches itself online.
I work at a petsmart she needs to be trained wayy better, i’m in the process of being in petcare. Also don’t be so hard on the petcare people because they are still being trained and learning. I have been studying and trying my best to memorize and learn about all the animals that we have. If you’ve ever been in sales you know people can be veryyyy rude if you get even question wrong.:(
Mixonisse The only *online* stores u can price match with are chewy and petsmart(srry no amazon). You can price match with other stores tho, like walmart
Former Petco employee here: I wasn’t specifically on reptiles most of the time while I worked there. I was the fish guy. This problem persists in every department unfortunately. Sometimes the employees don’t actually know the way they kept the animals was disgraceful. Personally I thought that was slightly better than employees like myself who knew it was wrong and were constantly told you can’t do it that way. Also anytime another store is shutting down for a remodel or something like that, guess where all the animals go: to another Petco packed with too many animals already. The tanks are ALWAYS too small with too many animals without their basic care needs. It’s heartbreaking to watch but if you tried to help, you’d get written up. Honestly I couldn’t deal with the guilt anymore and my store manager. The guy never picked up a single animal ever at the store since he had started working there. I was convinced he just hated animals until he told me he had cats which I’m sure he only had because of his wife. I hate how the animals are treated there. It’s the worst
That sucks 😓 I wouldn’t be able to stand that I’d lose my mind on my manager if he was like that. I got my first leopard gecko from Petco and she was in a very small cage with at least five other babies. And she was the ONLY one with a tail. I swear the employees messed with them and they all dropped their tails
I remember when i got my first gecko, my baby didnt even live for a year. I didnt know then how they were supposed to look and what a heathly one looks like. I feel so bad,
Lady: “You’re gonna need a “THICK” layer of sand” Me: Umm what in the world are you talking about? Geckos lick everywhere to sense things and if they lick the sand that can cause serious impaction because of all that building up inside them..so you are very wrong and pls don’t say that again.
Me: *buys pet tarantula* Petco Lady: “This UV light is perfect for tarantulas!” Me: Aren’t those only for reptiles?” Petco Lady: “Trust me!” Tarantula: *gets cooked alive*
that is actually really sad, she basically forced you to spend money on an extra lamp to just kill your pet. When will people stop giving false information
She must have sold me the light on purpose because It was expensive, It would kill my tarantula, so I would buy another one. I didn’t buy another one. I adopted one. For free. I also got money from Petco, because she was giving false information.
It's because the Petco employees get probably 0 training for the animals and give false information because the have no idea about what they're fabricating.
A snake in my local petco was trying desperately to get out of its cage. A Week later, there was a major flood and I heard that all the animals died. The store no longer has animals now. That snake knew...
GreySquirrely 17. Animals do have senses to indicate natural disasters. So you are right. It did know. R.I.P all the animals in the store. They just wanted a home😢
person out there oml... If only they knew WHY the snake tried to escape... Also... My friend has a bunch of pets. One story is the saddest though. There was a bearded dragon who had just a heat lamp, was in the basement, they owner hired a teenager to feed him and she gave him one piece of kale, AND to make it even worse he just threw the uncared for dead animals in his backyard. Luckily the bearded dragon (now named Doris) is a healthy 2 year old lizard.
Leopard Geckos: *Literally lick everything* Keepers: Ah yes, clumping sand, perfect for this gecko. Honestly I'd love to work for Petco just so I can actually educate and correctly inform people about how to care for their reptiles.
@HAEDYN RICHARDSON (Student) it sucks that you have to be 18. I wanna work at petsmart since it's closer to me and looks cleaner. Honestly I just want to inform people on reptiles since I have a ball python of my own. Plus i can get more snakes too.
i work at petco for this exact reason! it really depends on the store. there are lots of employees that actually know their stuff and wish to make petco a good place for our animals :)
omg this is absolutely terrible! I hate how these pets are being treated. Oddly, the petco near my house is much better than shown here. They are not kept on sand, their substrate is repti carpet. Their tails look like the tails of your geckos, they have clear eyes, nose, and mouth, and after doing alot of research and watching your vids i talked to one of the reptile people and they seemed to kmow what they were doing. However, when i asked him for one of those info packets about leopard geckos he told me i'd be better off looking on the internet.
+wolfheart ninja yeah as I said, thankfully there are some better petcos out there, but the bad seems to outweigh the good. haha wow pretty up front about their lack of knowledge lol.
+Leopard Gecko I'm consered about my leopard gecko. He is almost one year one ( I got him from petco). I feed him every day give him water everyday and hold him every day, But he has not yet sheaded and he looks tired. could you reply if you know what could be going on. Thank you.
+wolfheart ninja That's wonderful to read! The ones at my nearest Petco's usually look a little worse than they should, but not completely run-down. I think it's because they're sold so quickly that they don't have enough time to be neglected. Which is sad in a ways, but at least they start out healthy so new owners get a starting point of how they should look.
+Leopard Gecko i feel so sorry for them i saved my two leo's who were getting bullied but that was not petco fault and there are some pros the one i go to a gut who's my mom friend has ove 30 lizards and he says don't listen to anything petco tells you just do whats good for it dont put a boy and a girl and so one he even sid that sand is bad for them there alot of smart reptile owners in petco but there are some were i have seen leo abuse and so i ask her how long do they live and she said 5 years when it litary said 20 years but thank you for the nice info to stop animal abuse
I bought my leopard gecko from petco, luckily the employee I got had/has leopard geckos, I picked a healthy gecko luckily all the ones I’m there looked fairly healthy and they were using calcium, all the information in this video are right, so be aware
What do you guys think; It's better to adopt an animal at Petco, as to save it from the harsh environments it's living in, OR It's better to not adopt any animals from Petco, as to not support them & their harsh treatment to their animals. I can't decide, maybe you could?
hold a heist. go in there with masks and guns and state exactly why you are stealing the animals. say its like a rescue operation. take the necessary supplies to house the animals too.
Someone said about saving petco bettas that you're not saving them unless you steal them because then the store gets no money. The flip side to this is innocent employees get blamed, fired, fined, etc. It does NOTHING to the company's policies on its pet keeping, only to how many cameras and employee training exercises on theft that it needs. And now that I'm reading Angelina's comment- yup thats pretty much what you'd have to do.
It's not just geckos. I had a rabbit with crooked teeth who needed regular trimmings. The vet showed me how to do it for her at home and what clippers I would need to do it safely. I asked the rep where to find it and she got mad and called my bunny a disgusting rat who shouldn't be alive if it has defective teeth. Zelda the bunny has passed away now but not before living a long healthy life once I went to an independent pet supply store that gave me the right clippers. It's like they get angry/insulted if you ask them something they don't know.
Melody Rose wow, that was just plain disgusting. Imagine someone saying that to her about her life. Animals have emotions too. I am so sorry for your lost. People say the same thing about my chinchillas. It make me so mad. But your bunny is in a better place. My chinchilla and your bunny is running around heaven making alot children who lost their lives happy.
Most of the time fish are covered with the ich parasite. Luckily the petcos in my area have well informed people and the animals are being housed properly and they have a quarantine tank for the sick fish.
honestly my local petco takes great care of their animals, and from what i have heard they give the right information. now i am only a rodent and a dog owner, i have had my hand in the world of reptile, bird, and fish research. i have never seen such bad animal care in this store and our store has a sign that says "always look in the back first" because they want people to adopt first. i am very sad to hear about these situations, and i am in no way supporting those petcos, it's just that not all petcos are neglecting their animals from what i have seen. i hope all the situations improve.
my family always gets annoyed when we visit petco and i constantly remind them of how awful the conditions are, what should be different, and that we shouldn’t be supporting this, but oh well stay mad i will keep doing it
My roommate wants to work at Petco or Petsmart. I couldn't. You HAVE to take care of them like they're taken care of there, or you don't keep your job. The only good that can come of it, is helping a new owner buy the correct items, and explaining why everything that is in the display enclosure is horribly wrong. Which is a great thing. But I just can't imagine putting hatchlings and juveniles in with each other and adults, etc. Ugh, nope, makes my skin crawl.
Its definitely hard, I work there and they barely give you time to properly take care of them. I once looked up what to give the bearded dragons because we were out of the kale we give them so i read that peppers were okay to give and i got yelled at saying we don't do that here even though it says so online
yes... i got my ferret yesterday and today she had to go to the vet bc she had a GI impaction... we had to pay 12 hundred dollars for surgery. our other choice was to put her down bc she was in such critical condition, but we knew we couldn’t do that. she’s in surgery right now, so if you’re seeing this, please pray for my little baby. i will never get pets from petco or petsmart every again.
Alright.. here we go. My family has never gotten a Leopard Gecko, however several years ago we adopted a Bearded Dragon from a pet store (not 100% certain it was Petco.) Several of the lizards limbs were mangled, as the person we were talking to said that it's siblings had been attacking it. This was confusing, as the bearded dragon was almost 5x the size of the lizards around it. We immediately adopted it, as my sister had been looking for as much information as she could on proper care for these beautiful creatures. Thankfully, our lizards set backs did not stop them from living a full life. R.I.P. Flower, you were a great companion.
I was at a Petco and the guy said that I shouldn't get a big cage because he would GET LOST IN HIS CAGE. It is very sad Edit: I was gonna get a 40 breeder for my gargoyle gecko btw
GeckoGirl, eh I mean someone came into the local reptile store I volunteer at and they came here bc they got a crested gecko at Petsmart or petco idk and thought the info didn’t sound right. They told them that the crested geckos only need a 5 gallon tank bc they will get stressed in a big tank. Luckily we gave them all of the right info and they bought a large tank. :)
Wrigley The Dood, I don’t see what that really has to do with a leo baby. A crestie, of course. But this is no crestie. Baby leopard geckos, especially ones settling in to a new environment, can get stressed out easily and it will take longer for them to adjust. Plus the fear of your baby wondering away from it’s heat source and freezing to death. This is why you should aim for the small side when it comes to baby leos. But for adults/juveniles, bigger is always better🙃
Ya. I’ve made that mistake many times. When I was younger 4 of my geckos died from impaction. Also my bearded dragon died from that too. I’m now using reptile carpet and tiles. I’m reaserching so much and am not buying pet smart or pet co ever again
This reminds me of how my brother cares for his gecko. He told me that he could care for his on his own because I had my own.. But he NEVER fed him or cleaned his tank, so I just took him into my own care. The two were raised together, and the male gets depressed without the female..
Keep in mind that they may snap and fight one day. I’ve seen countless cases of geckos tolerating each other for years, only to snap and seriously injure or kill each other. They could also breed. Make sure they have a massive enclosure (I’m talking 4x2x2 or bigger).
@@nightinggale6470 I do have a huge enclosure. If they did breed, all their eggs have been infertile. And, they are 7 years old and have been together for a long time. In some cases, the male has snapped at the female because she like to make it look like her tail is a mealworm. :>
I don't think it's that the employees don't care, I think it's more so that they are told to say these things so that (I know it sounds horrible) the animal they sell someone will die, causing them to come back to Petco to buy another. And another one. And another one. It's all about the money
Sarah Johnson No. because you have a six week return fee on all animals you get there in case it dies so you can go back and get another one. It's just they train the employees who most likely don't know a lot about reptiles and take the quick and easy information so the customers will buy the more expensive 'Reptile Kit' with sand, a heat lamp and just what you'd think at the ball a desert reptile would need.
Sarah Johnson most petcos (Or at least mine) have a policy where if the animal dies within 30 days, they'll replace it for free. so really selling sick or injured animals doesn't help them out at all if their goal is to sell ones that will die. I think it's just misinformation. a long history of it. employees were misinformed somehow years ago, and then passed on their wrong information to new employees who trusted their higher ups enough not to look into it themselves. and then THEY pass on that Informatiom as well; rinse and repeat.
Yeah...what disturbs me is that they sell hermit crabs, which are never supposed to be kept as pets and are quickly dying out due to people collecting them and their shells to sell at places like Petco
I’m so sorry. I’m sure they were beautiful and great cats, i know how it feels to lose someone/pets you really value. Rest easy Felix and Stripes 💙 also, fuck you Petco!
Luckily for me, when I went to a petsmart to get my leopard gecko (I was young) the sales assistant had many lizards of their own and gave us calcium, two hides, a heat pad, and moss to put in a shed bin she told us to use a ten gallon tank while he was a juvenile, but it was a MUST to have a 20 when he was older. I always thought petsmart was like other chain stores, but the workers there (even the cashier) were very kind and had an obvious care for animals, so, know that not all stores are awful, but some of them are bad enough for ten stores.
I bought both of my geckos there and they we very healthy and well taken care of the employee helped us get everything that we could possibly need the right crickets and all the vitamins as well as a small book that had so much good information on how to handle them and feed and all the basics. Unfortunately the geckos were crowded and only one hide but once I got home with the first on he grew to a good size and is even healthier now. The biggest down side was the fact that they didn’t know the genders and we bought another one later on not knowing if they’ll get along or if they would fight. I’m pretty sure one is definitely a male but I’m not dead set on it.
If you can respond to this, what should I get? I used to have rapto mat and it smelled atrocious, so now I have calcu sand and I'm seeing a lot of comments saying it is bad
@@mckenziedewese1902 I thought those would get really stinky unless I cleaned it everyday, I want something slightly low maintenance. yes i have cal sand
SmolBoi Wait You Use Calci-Sand? UGH Do You Know That It Could Kill Your Reptiles??? They Eat The Calcium In Sand AND ACTUALLY EAT THE SAND! Just Imagine Finding Your Vitamins In Sand... UGH YOU'RE SUCH A DISGRACE
A few things: Thank you so much for posting this video. I bought a leo from Petco 11 years ago. She is still happy and healthy, but I bought my second leopard gecko from a breeder after finding out how horrible places like Petco and Petsmart are. Thank you for trying to bring awareness to this horrible topic. Second: your accent is amazing
I have a leopard gecko named tango, i bought him from petsmart, and love him. Im only 14, but am trying my best to take proper care of him, your channel helps me be sure of that. 💕 thank you 💕
I started crying at a Petco once due to their new "Tarantula Huts". These are supposed to house baby tarantulas, however they are doing nothing right! They have green foam along the bottom and a single leaf. They are all kept at the same temperature despite some being tropical species and others being desert species. They are smaller than my pinkie nail yet are fed crickets a bit smaller than the size of my big toenail. They are given no place to hide other than the corners of their habitats, and are starving to death. Too many people are scared of spiders, and I hate it. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE.
Also at Walmart, their fish are in atrocious conditions! I counted up to 20 dead fish at a smaller store, and one beta fish was sneezing its gills out.
I went dumpster diving at petco( they throw out perfectly good cat food that isn't even open) and found a cage with a Guinea pig in it, he was freezing and was starving, I had some lettuce and stuff because I just went to the store, I brought him home and made him a C&C cage about 8 feet. I gave him a salad and cut his nails and his fur a bit because it was so long, I named him stitch ( he has a stitch mark on his eye ) and I went to the store after doing a ton of research and got him a ton of fleece stuff and made him a couple cuddle sacks, I got him Timothy hay and Guinea pig diet, I found out piggies need friends so I went to the shelter and adopted a baby, they are both healthy and alive in a 10 foot cage squealing and playing all the time, they love there salads and there tasty hay. Till this day I always hated petco.
You should have documented it the moment you realized there was an animal there :((. I do know tho some pet owners will dump off unwanted pets at pet stores or even in the back like that.
I saw a video of a man dumpster diving behind pet smart, he found live baby lizards in a tiny little bag about 17 in all and he didn’t save any because he was bitching about how it was wrong to throw away live animals. So moral of this true story is that if you find something in need help it before it FUCKING DIES!!!
The pictures are unbelievably hard to look at. I went to a petco once to buy a leopard gecko and it was just sad to watch these beautiful animals sit there and wait to die. Petco employees also gave me wrong info. Its was either this or that sand or a carpet or a special kind of sand or whatever they had. I am lucky i bought a healthy young gecko and hope that we have a great life together❤ Your videos help me out so much, so thank you
Their tails in the picture are so thin. Poor things. I really wish that petstores would stop selling animals or AT LEAST take care of them and share the right information. Even shelters, such as my local shelter don't give animals enough space espically small animals such as mice, hamsters, etc.
Belle I know! I would never even try to work at petco. It is a terrible place. This was a joke to show that they’re treating them so terribly in pet stores that I would go steal them to give them better lives. (I would do something illegal)
I purchased a rat over a year ago, sick and dying and they picked her up by the tail and put her in a small box (made for an animal the size of a dwarf hamster) and pointed me to a "Rat Manor" that was 2 and a half foot tall and a foot wide, they told me she would live happily there for the rest of her life. She's now 16 inches and 2.5lbs and living in a 5x5 and I can't help but think of the babies they sell to unsuspecting parents.
m s that's great! Rats are amazing. But I don't think I would be able to own them due to their short lifetime. I lost my little mouse Nella today, and rats don't live very long either. I think when I am much older I may get rats
m s I'm sure I'd love them, maybe a bit too much. I get very attached to my animals. Even my fish, I get very sad when they die. I'm a sensitive person, so I'm going to wait some years before getting another permanent animal (I will be fostering some however)
I worked at a Petco in Osage Beach Missouri and animal care was absolutely #1. Every staff member was knowledgable in at least 2 departments, I was fish and "exotics" departments. Exotics being reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, crustaceans and such.
To be honest by reading the comments, it seems like the difference between a good Petco and a bad one is the the employees. If the employees really care enough to research things about the animals, then you have a good one, but some people just work there to have a job.
And let me tell you, their training is garbage. If i hadn't already known information on my leos, and my fish tanks, I might have believed the training flash videos and worksheets at face value.
Its important to know Petco doesnt require their staff to undergo schooling before being eligible for hire. They have hundreds of species if you include fish, and that is alot of information. People who walk in knowing absolutely 0% about the animal they are about to buy are just as bad as an employee trying to meet your needs by playing it off. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. If you walk into a petco or petsmart and expect each of their staff to be damn near college degree experts on every single species you're delusional
I agree that you should have all your research before you walk in, but I also think that they employees shouldnt give info they arent sure about. They should just say something to the extent of not being knowledgeable on the topic
ImpossibRu no one said that they were college level. Of course they’re not gonna be college level but Petco is the one telling these kids the information about these animals. So yeah people are going to think that they’re going to know information about animals because they work there and they’re supposed to know the information. They’re supposed to be there to help you find an animal and how to care for them. Of course you have to do your own research but it also helps a lot if it’s someone telling you straight to your face and their experience. The fact is that Petco knows that they don’t know anything so they tell them the wrong information. But these kids don’t know that, so don’t be calling people delusional just because they’re asking for advice from people that work at a PET store.
As somebody who worked at a Petco, I can confirm this. Petco is a retail store, not only a pet store. We undergo basic training, but the leadership trusts you to be able to use common sense in terms of how you handle and care for animals. (Along with a short period of supervised work with them) If you want an expert, ask a veterinarian. One of my most memorable encounters was with a customer was when selling products that I wasn’t completely familiar with. I told them that this is what the effects of said product were based on the displayed information and what I knew based on common sense. They snapped at me for my wording and told me: “Well you work at this store you should know what it is you are dealing with” Yes, we do, but we have our own speciality’s, preferences, and experiences in animals but we are by no means all knowing. If you are worried to such a degree you would get mad at an employee for not being able to confirm information for you please do your own research. It’s not our responsibility to know how to take care of every animal in and outside of our store, they don’t get paid a vets salary, they get paid retail wages and probably don’t give a fuck about your dog who just shit in the parking lot.
I got my Pacman frog from Petco. He came sick and nobody told me. I was devastated to find out he had MBD and took care of him the best I could. Sadly Chompy passed away but he lives a good and happy life and passed in a warm area surrounded by loved ones.
The situations that the beta fish are in is absolutely atrocious as well. They don't even move, and their colors are dull when they are supposed to be bright, like jewels.
I thought most betta fish there were okay, until I went to a pet store that hooks their bowls all up to a machine that cycles out the water and constantly keeps it clean and has nice, flowing water. They looked amazing, happy, and comfortable there. I had no idea what a healthy betta was until then, but now I know that they are not supposed to look like what they look like at a lot of pet stores I go to. I got my current betta, (Dragon King,) from that pet store I spoke about above. He's so energetic, beautiful, and loves to swim around his 10 gallon tank we have for him, but I've been told that bettas do not usually swim so happily, and are usually bored and aggressive. My betta is so calm, and leaves the other fish in his tank alone 100%, (it is a fish that's very VERy docile, but large compared to my betta, so they're fine with each other, but don't socialize. The bigger fish is getting moved to a 20 gallon once we get it up, but for now they're alright.)
Alexandra Olson I used to have a beta that I got from petsmart, and I never knew betas could be _friendly_. Maybe it was because I had him in a tank with other (not beta) fish? I tried it with another beta after he died, and that beta was friendly too.
The reason betas are called "fighting fish" is not because they will eat any other fish, but because the male betas will fight each other to the death to be established as the "alpha" with all the mating rights. They probably couldn't care less about mating with a fish from another species, and without another male, there's no reason to fight.
Today, I went to buy another hamster set up, and the petco employee said that a tiny crittertrail would be perfectly fine for a SYRIAN hamster. I just said ''Oh, I will think about it.'' and I literally ran out of the store, the crittertrail was far to small for even a mouse! The man said that he had a hamster in that type of cage and said that the hamster was ''happy'' and ''joyful''. I was so shocked.
I know this isn't a reptile but.. my friend gave me her old budgie who was very healthy, so we went to Petco to buy him a friend since he seemed lonely, we got a budgie, payed for it, and took it home. I carefully and immediately took the budgie out of the box and noticed bruises, blood, cracked and wounded feet, and even a cracked beak! This budgie also had parakeet mange(an infestation of mites on the beaks feet and cere in parakeets) I took special care of the new bird which we named blueberry, and cleaned everything with vinegar and water. next I rubbed vegetable oil on the beaks and feet of the birds and let them bathe. Blueberry is nearly back to health after 2 weeks and was only around 3-4 months old. When I was at Petco the cage was extremely warm only a plastic chain and artificial wooden play tree were there to occupy them! and on top of that the wings were cut super short! they only had seed and even unclean water! It was so sad, and I hope that soon Petco will change the living conditions of these animals.
Breanna Barnes I told the lady what bird I liked so I picked one that look active and okay. and this bird looked active and healthy, even getting fed from the birds also in the cage, so no lights were going off in my head. I can't see too well so I didn't notice any of these things until I was looking closer when I came home. blueberry is fine and dandy now and eats very well, even fights the other birds for treats
I was the most happy person in the entire world when I went to Petco and I picked up my bearded dragon that I saved for months to get and within two months and died from a disease I hate Petco
Or it could just be that people don't think wild animals belong in cages (perhaps with the exception of those which are at risk of extinction.) If there weren't foolish people buying lizards, PetCo wouldn't sell them. This hypocrite is essentially promoting the very behavior she condemns because her natural and healthy maternal instincts have been hijacked away from caring for her own children and towards caring for lizards.
The petco where I bought my leopard gecko have me little to no information on how to care for them and was housing at least 30 in a 1 gallon tank. She is thankfully now being properly cared for after much research
I got a leopard gecko yesterday from Petco, I used your youtube channel to get the right things for my gecko, hes really skinny though but hes gaining some weight.
Le Baguette That’s like saying don’t vote because your vote won’t make an impact. Yes, if ONE person bought an animal it wouldn’t make an impact. But it obviously isn’t just ONE person. Hundreds of people everyday buy animals from Petco, and the more we can spread awareness the less buys Petco will get, or any chain pet store. Plus, wouldn’t you want to buy an animals from somewhere where you’ll know it’s healthy and from a good source?
@@howellaboutno9500 but are we just supposed to let the unhealthy ones at places like that die? I see where you are coming from but even so the chances of Pet co shutting down are so low anyways so why not help those poor babies nevertheless?
@@howellaboutno9500 but are we just supposed to let the unhealthy ones at places like that die? I see where you are coming from but even so the chances of Pet co shutting down are so low anyways so why not help those poor babies nevertheless?
Mackenzie - It’s an ethical matter, I suppose. Save one animal, subjecting others to the same treatment, or leave the one animal for it to die, possibly saving others? It’s just like the common problem with the trains. Turn and you kill 10 strangers, stay straight and you kill 1 loved one. But, there are other factors to consider. By leaving the animal at Petco, you can buy a healthy animal from a reliable source, supporting trustworthy breeders and knowing your animal will be healthy. Our goal isn’t to shut down Petco, but rather stop them from selling animals. By spreading awareness, one person choosing not to buy an animal turns into 10. If those people tell other people, 10 can turn into 100. It’s videos like this or posts on social media that can make those changes. Profits go down, maybe Petco decides to sell less geckos. Then no geckos, then no snakes, then no fish, etc. See how that works? It’s your choice. Don’t let your emotions rule out reason.
I have one precious leopard gecko named Ruby, My mom bought it on petco, some days after my mom bought it, I noticed that Ruby had missing some fingers, literraly, some of their fingers don't have the roots of the claws, but still she is very good and healthy
@MS Cous I always do that, I am very concisious that she haves problems with shedding, so I always chek her after shedding if she haves skin in her fingers for removing it.
I went to a Petco and looked at the bearded dragons some were orange and some were gray, but here's when I got mad the gray-bearded dragon's enclosure was REALLY SMALL, while the orange ones had a 50 gallon enclosure.
Ezekiel The bearded dragon IKR IVE SEEN THAT! It’s like orange beardies are much more appreciated :( I have a grayish-greenish color you were talking about and an orange beardie! And i spoil them rotten xD But luckily i didn’t get them from petco i got them from a professional breeder :3!
〚 σkαmí ɦǟռǟ〛 I reported this to the workers there and, good news that they changed both of the enclosures for orange and gray beardies to 50 gallon enclosures which is amazing
I got my leopard gecko from petco, all the geckos there looked so healthy and seeing these photos stuns me...it’s awful. I’m very thankful that the employee helping us was genuinely informed on leopard geckos and she set us up perfectly, the employee in the video seems to not be so knowledgeable. I wish all petco stores and chain pet stores operated as well as mine does when it comes to their animals. So sad :(
petco and petsmart is pretty stupid. they don't give their workers training and the manager gets MAD if you ask someone a question about your customers going to be pet.
Top 10 WarriorCats I use to work for PetSmart and to be honest you don't go their to handle the animals it's not a petting zoo. I also had every customer in my store asking for my help in pets from my fish knowledge to reptile knowledge. But it's because I raised frogs, beardies, corn snakes and now have my own crested gecko. As for fish use to have 4 dozen fish tanks at one time and knew when it came to fish what the hell was going on and though I left their I still get questions when I go in their about the fish problems or reptile questions.
Literally just got hired and had to go through a 12 hour aquatic training course, 6+ hours for every other animal. Bullshit that we "don't get training". It's that the other workers dont give a shit about the animals in the store unlike the few who do.
I went to petsmart (not saying they are ALWAYS RIGHT)she told me everything I found out was really true so I didn’t have to worry, and he is in SUCH GREAT HEALTH😁
ARK the man I know this is super late but I met a very well educated worker at Petsmart who told me after purchasing my gecko how to hold him, feed him, and recommended upgrading to a 20 gallon tank and now my gecko is so happy. Petsmart in my opinion is a bit better than Petco
the petsmart i go to is very amazing. the worker is very excited to show me the leopard gecko. she owned a bearded dragon and explained a lot of stuff about them, she seemed to know what she was doing and it made me very happy. i’ve been doing almost a year of research on these guys, so i’m very prepared to get one
Yeah I had to tell a worker about a bird that was lying dead in it's cage,it was a canary which got put into a cage of finches and I passed by it seeing it fly around because very frantically, and i ran back too it and there it was dead, I could tell that all the birds were underfed and had no water what so all, so I told them and they said the bird was fricken sleeping like BRUH NO ITS DEAD petco sucks
Bakuhomo I found a bird laying on its back on the bottom of the cage, still breathing and blinking. Told a worker, they picked it up and walked to the front and threw it in the trash.
Update: went back for crickets bc no place else had any in stock, and there were 3 dead baby leopard geckos and 1 live one with its tail fallen off and no toes
@@sarinnaneumann8182 I would of took the bird and sat outside with it until it passed so at least that way it died peacefully. Also what kind of worker just tosses it in the frikin trash like WTH I hope they get fired.
Many years ago wen I had a budgie (( had to give it away wen I was like 7. getting another bird soon 16 now btw )) and I was looking to get a second budgie and unfortunately the one I picked had a parasite or something because it had diarrhea which is a sign of sickness in birds ( which I only learned recently wen doing research for my new bird ). So yeah I got sold a sick bird and it broke my heart wen it died because it was so sweet and frendly. Poor thing.
Giyu Tomioka I reported it to the manager and she said he did nothing wrong and then I sent her a picture of the Leo’s with their toes falling off and she said that it was normal for baby Leo’s and they shouldn’t be on any substrate except sand and when I sent her the faces she called me mentally retarded, a druggie, and then told me to kill myself LMAO
I recently went to my local petco to look at the leopard geckos, since I'm think about getting one soon. But when I got to the tank they were keeping them in I was surprised. There were about 10-12 geckos (babies and adults) in what appeared to be a 5.5 gallon tank. That isn't even big enough for 1 gecko. And here they are putting 11 in such a small space. I felt so bad for the poor little things. I really hope petco realizes these mistakes and fixes them.
This is sad. The tails are so thin, it hurts my heart. My leos tail is fat and heathy, yet, those poor geckos tails were as thin as a twig. Petco...help your geckos and feed them, ugh, this is terrible. Sadly, though, I have seen a very skinny Leo at my local Petco before and I had no idea that this was worldwide. This is sad.
Mike Sims what I learned is that petco it terrible but in some cases a lot of petsmart people know what there doing like the geckos and turtles there are completely healthy and have a good population know what I dont like is the amount of bearded dragons they put together
The petco near me actually takes really good care of their animals, and they give out correct information. They also have very good selections for how small it is, they had a leucistic ball python, the most gorgeous bettas I’ve ever seen, and adorable chunky little leopard geckos in many different colors. They don’t overcrowd their habitats, and they ask you if you have a setup already and how it’s made, and if it’s not correct they explain why and suggest what to buy, and if they think the animal could be harmed they will deny the sale. Not every Petco is bad
When i got my gecko i was pretty ticked that they had sand in the tank. When you feed the gecko the mealworms or crickets will move around. If the gecko eats the sand it can hurt them and possibly kill them.
huhhhh? i work at petco and our planograms for all of our reptiles say no sand, just reptile carpet. whoever worked at that petco wasn’t doing their job 🙄
@Ocelot well yeah it’s clearly not superior to tile or even paper towels but it’s highly preferable to sand, especially with juvenile geckos which is what pet stores receive.
hey my grandpa owns a pet store with all kinds of animals. He treats the animals fairly and makes sure to not abuse them like petco does. whenever i come to his store i sometimes hear compliments from costumers saying that my grandpa should own a zoo! i have five geckos happy and healthy living in separate tanks they have their own humid spots for shedding a cool spot and a warm spot i am lucky that my grandfather owns his shop!
Non chain pets stores usually do much better than chain ones in terms of animal care. There are 18 local fish shops, 2 pet shops and a reptile shop in my area. All the ones I have gone to take great care of there animals.
It's also fish! I saw dead fish on the filter and I told them they were hurt/dead and they told me they were playing it was sad to hear Petco employees have no idea what they are doing I also found dead/hurt fish on the floor I wasn't sure if they jumped out or were put on the floor the next day I came in with a small bucket and scooped up all the fish that jumped and put them in my tank and now they are doing just fine 😁😀
CTM Gaming! Wait? You scooped up all the dead fish off the floor.. and put them into your tank? And.. they’re doing fine? THE DEAD FISH ARE DOING FINE omlll

Oh honey, I so wish your video would've made a difference 😭
What store should I go to get a leopard gecko for myself? One that doesn't treat animals this cruelly.
I was at a petco and there was a little girl buying a bearded dragon, she was about 8 ish and the employee started rambling on about tank size. The employee said “adults need about 10 gallons” and the girl said “that’s WAY to small are you nuts?” I love that lil girl now 😂❤️
Addison Tesmer she said what had to be said 😌💖
Jocelyn Gonzalez facts tho 😌💕
That’s what I would have said too, that also proves that she did her research, so she was prepared :3
Which is great!
KAnimates uwu exactly!! i’m glad she did do her research:)
I know just I HAVE A LEOPARD GECKO AND I HAVE A 20 GALLON TANK FOR IT AND IT TAKES THE WHOLE SPACE
They also keep their bearded dragons in horrible condition
They do! I always shop with locally buisnesses because they treat the animals a lot better. It always makes me upset to see the reptiles in petco.
Yeah once I saw about 12 to 20 babies in a one dragon enclouser it was sad
Hold up.... *THERE'S BEARDED OLD DRAGONS* !?!?
( yes this is a joke. I'm not data at dumb. )
Also Hamsters... I think all animals tbh...
They really do. I went there recently, they didn't have good lighting and the right temperature. Not to mention the poor thing was lethargic and skinny.
I went to petco yesterday and they were feeding baby bearded dragons crickets that were twice the size of their heads. Also no heat lamps for them :(
Oh noooo
*in a few days I’m braking into petco to steal what I can, who is with me?*

@@emmap564 any at all i breed them. As well as no sand. At least with eating. And salad big as inbetween there eyes
It’s not the employees (most of the time) because they’re just doing their job. It’s the company and managers for giving false information.
@@nessacruz404 welp, at least some people there know something
I am learning a lot about geckos i know everything about housing and what they do what they eat and other stuff
i watched so many videos about them
Gecko lover zoey meme two
i did research before asking my parents if i could get a beardie found a breeder and he said that they were pymg ones he said they are not for fisrt time reptile people and yet my parents got me a blotch blue tongue from a friend, as soon as i saw the lizard i called her to ask about the temp it need to be at and what he liked to eat she also showed me how to trim the nails. now i have two from her and have had them for over 5 years they are easy to handle but wont be getting anymore until i have a shed up so i can put there cage(big) in there and have heating as well, only got 1 heat lamp so i put it in the middle of the enclouser as i have a divider wall there for my lizards. i was told by the local pet shop in my area that 4foot reptile tank would fit both lizards, yeah they were babies but we i seen them grow bit bigger i started building there enclouser to be bigger now i need to make another one as they want more space enver though they have enough,
You don't even have to do that hard of research for beginner pets, everything is on TH-cam nowadays
Yeah, we have a petsmart near me and the animals seem in much better condition rather than what i just saw.
Its opposite where I live...... i live in Florida (btw)
Brooke Chance lol my sister got one from petco and it’s like 3 years old but still hasn’t switched shells lolll
Brooke Chance yeah! We gave our hermit crabs a choice of a painted shell or a normal shell, one of them chose a painted shell (nontoxic paint)
Why has no one sued them for animal abuse yet?
They've been sued several times. They always pay it off. Large corporation.
Kadri Aalto they actually finally got sued and only have a few mice and a few reptiles etc in each cage now instead of them being jam packed. It was such a nice change
True tf
Alivia Mickelson That's good but at my pet owners there was like 18 mice in a small cage....poor animals
Kadri Aalto the government should've hit me dead by now and AT LEAST SOMEBODY CALL ANIMAL ABUSE IN HERE!!!
I haven’t gone to petco in over 7 years, every time I need something for my Leo’s or box turtles I go to an actual store that’s meant to sell stuff for reptiles and not just a general pet store.
I wish I had a store like that near me
@@daywalker3735 same, there are only chain stores like petsmart and petco near me, but my petco is full of experienced reptile owners so they know what they’re doing. My local petsmart is full of dummies though lol

petco is the only store in my area. I have to go quite far to go to another pet store. I really just get supplies there like crickets

My uncal lol XD
this is just sad. I got my leopard geckos from petco, and although they are perfectly healthy, the reptile "specialist" told me that I could put a baby in with an adult
...did you
That’s fucked up
Not a baby but I got two geckos from a friend they are 5 and 7 years old and they can be together for a good amount of time but need to be separated for the majority because just like us humans they can get tired of each other and because of their weak bone structure they can break each other’s face 😬
Exactly man
The Tester gg I would never trust any reptile fish or insect alone with their offspring, as those animal groups tend to eat their young due to them being weaker
Is it weird a feel an urge to go to Petco/PetSmart, ask questions and correct their answers 🤷🤔
Edit: Guys CHILL! I just felt that ME being annoying is better than animals being abused/killed.
Skye's Slimes Yeah! Do that so the employees have even less time to feed and care for the dozen plus animals they’re supposed to be taking care of and that you’re trying to help
Mbr they have plenty of time to feed their animals lmao, someone asking them a few questions will not take too much time away.
I wanna do that too
I was getting a leopard gecko at Petco, and there were literally like 7 geckos in a 10-gallon tank! They were also on sand, and only 1 hide! UGGH
i went into petco and i had to leave because the cats litter box clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a LONG time and i asked the lady why and she said she wasn’t allowed to GIRL WHAT?!!!
a lot of petcos have cats from other rescues, so volunteers take care of it. it isnt the employees fault, the rescue should take care of iy
i worked at a petco once. and that is a thing... i got yelled at cuz i got SICK of looking at the poor cat with a gross box. i told my boss to grow the fuck up. i left and called AC on them... they closed the next day.... rip store. i mean jail
My favourite animals. Reptiles, cats. All being tortured.
WHAT EW!
I legit couldn’t tell that those were leopard geckos, they are SO SKINNY.
"No they're just fasting" said by Petco
I actually thought the same thing. It's so skinny I see why they confused it with a house gecko!
Yeah it’s a thing they can be born with they can have a parasite and they just constantly use more weight until their entire organ system is messed up
Ik :(
my friend just got one from pet i & i currently just took it in... she is SO tiny!!! she won't eat or anything. i have no clue what to do :(
A lot of these geckos are so skinny they look like salamanders. Holy shit.
NPC #7048164 ikr
Bearded Dragon geckos are supposed to be wide bois. They stick to surfaces. They have to be low profile. These things are actually being starved or not fed the right stuff.
NPC #7048164 bearded dragons and leopard geckos are stocky reptiles and need the fat lmao
Bearded Dragon yea. These thins look like a snake. Same diameter all the way down. Poor things.
I feel like petstores really like to put solitary animals together, then group animals alone
They also told me a 10 gallon tank would hold a full grown one.😑🤦♀️
They also told me they live about 2 years.
Edit: Yes I realize I should have researched more before purchasing my beardie, it’s a mistake I regret dearly, but I don’t regret my short time with my Beardie, he lived 3 years in a far larger rank then they recommended and with a even mix of veggies and insects and died from unknown causes

All the reptiles' humidity is all at 10% too, including the crested geckos, chameleons, frogs, etc. Tried to tell her the soil is too dry but she's worried about mold. We mist them but it just doesn't help if the eco earth is dusty. I don't know why we have hygrometers if we're not abiding by them...
Also, the axolotl tank is HEATED. >:(
Honestly thinking about quitting, I can see one of the chameleons fading away as it refuses to eat and an anole has an abscess from a stuck shed in its eye. It's so frustrating that she won't listen to me.

Former Petco employee here:
I wasn’t specifically on reptiles most of the time while I worked there.

Thank you for doing your best, of course all employees do but most don't learn the right way. But you tried really hard
That sucks 😓 I wouldn’t be able to stand that I’d lose my mind on my manager if he was like that. I got my first leopard gecko from Petco and she was in a very small cage with at least five other babies. And she was the ONLY one with a tail.

It's because the Petco employees get probably 0 training for the animals and give false information because the have no idea about what they're fabricating.

omg this is absolutely terrible!
+Leopard Gecko ya, the guy that worked here seemed pretty cool. He owned geckos himself, and he seemed to really care about them.

What do you guys think;
It's better to adopt an animal at Petco, as to save it from the harsh environments it's living in,
OR
It's better to not adopt any animals from Petco, as to not support them & their harsh treatment to their animals.
I can't decide, maybe you could?
save the animals!
hold a heist. go in there with masks and guns and state exactly why you are stealing the animals. say its like a rescue operation. take the necessary supplies to house the animals too.
Silver The Riolu Or animals die. your choice.

Melody Rose oh heck, that’s hard to believe but i believe it because people say stupid shit to cover the fact that they don’t know something

honestly my local petco takes great care of their animals, and from what i have heard they give the right information. now i am only a rodent and a dog owner, i have had my hand in the world of reptile, bird, and fish research. i have never seen such bad animal care in this store and our store has a sign that says "always look in the back first" because they want people to adopt first. i am very sad to hear about these situations, and i am in no way supporting those petcos, it's just that not all petcos are neglecting their animals from what i have seen. i hope all the situations improve.

Alright..
It is very sad
Edit: I was gonna get a 40 breeder for my gargoyle gecko btw
That is actually true.. a baby could potentially stray from his heat source and possibly die. Maybe don’t assume things.
@@sour_fallz how do you know it's a baby
Ruby Scorpion, nobody said I do. I said a baby could get lost in its cage. The reason the store would say that is that it was a baby.

Rocken reptiles you can use sand, but not thick sand
IrisBeauty well possibly. It’s not about how much there is it’s about how much they eat. I would personally stay away from it though

Exactly what I think, petco will then say that THE OWNER did something wrong and the owners will try again and again
Petco get more money
Sarah Johnson No. because you have a six week return fee on all animals you get there in case it dies so you can go back and get another one. It's just they train the employees who most likely don't know a lot about reptiles and take the quick and easy information so the customers will buy the more expensive 'Reptile Kit' with sand, a heat lamp and just what you'd think at the ball a desert reptile would need.
Sarah Johnson yes I agree with you 100%
Sarah Johnson most petcos (Or at least mine) have a policy where if the animal dies within 30 days, they'll replace it for free. so really selling sick or injured animals doesn't help them out at all if their goal is to sell ones that will die.

I agree, my pet smart is super good with animals and they have the right knolege.

Their tails in the picture are so thin. Poor things. I really wish that petstores would stop selling animals or AT LEAST take care of them and share the right information. Even shelters, such as my local shelter don't give animals enough space espically small animals such as mice, hamsters, etc.

@@axaxii1588 I know it's a joke, but I think it's a serious topic that should be handled in a serious way.
I like how you stole the comment from 3 years ago but added more to it.
@@onyxth3ripper get a sense of humor bruv.
She's now 16 inches and 2.5lbs and living in a 5x5 and I can't help but think of the babies they sell to unsuspecting parents.
m s
Did you get her a friend?
Phoe's Stuff yeah! she now has a little sister named Lotus.
m s that's great! Rats are amazing. But I don't think I would be able to own them due to their short lifetime. I lost my little mouse Nella today, and rats don't live very long either. I think when I am much older I may get rats
Phoe's Stuff I'm so sorry for your loss 💕 but rats are excellent pets and I think you'd love them
m s I'm sure I'd love them, maybe a bit too much.
It's also up to the store to set protocol
And let me tell you, their training is garbage. If i hadn't already known information on my leos, and my fish tanks, I might have believed the training flash videos and worksheets at face value.
satunbreeze true
satunbreeze It's not their job to research. They're taught these things.
Yeah but they don't have to lisen to that crap as do the research themselves.
If you walk into a petco or petsmart and expect each of their staff to be damn near college degree experts on every single species you're delusional
this makes me want to go to petco to actually inform people how animals in their stores should be kept. (i do a lot of research on these animals)
McKenzie Dewese exactly.
As somebody who worked at a Petco, I can confirm this. Petco is a retail store, not only a pet store. We undergo basic training, but the leadership trusts you to be able to use common sense in terms of how you handle and care for animals. (Along with a short period of supervised work with them)
If you want an expert, ask a veterinarian. One of my most memorable encounters was with a customer was when selling products that I wasn’t completely familiar with. I told them that this is what the effects of said product were based on the displayed information and what I knew based on common sense. They snapped at me for my wording and told me:
“Well you work at this store you should know what it is you are dealing with”
Yes, we do, but we have our own speciality’s, preferences, and experiences in animals but we are by no means all knowing.
I got a PetSmart ad on this video.
Oh god
Chloe & Rosco Random! Perfect
pet smart is better than pet co
Keira XOXO no it isn’t I saw a dead turtle in the tank and I could tell it was there for a while because of the smell of the corpse
Same 😭😂
I got my Pacman frog from Petco.
Alexandra Olson ya and a lot are dead
My betta is so calm, and leaves the other fish in his tank alone 100%,
(it is a fish that's very VERy docile, but large compared to my betta, so they're fine with each other, but don't socialize. The bigger fish is getting moved to a 20 gallon once we get it up, but for now they're alright.)
Alexandra Olson I used to have a beta that I got from petsmart, and I never knew betas could be _friendly_. Maybe it was because I had him in a tank with other (not beta) fish? I tried it with another beta after he died, and that beta was friendly too.
every time I see the betas at petco half of them are dead and/ or dying honestly this corporation is too big to take care of all of it's animals
Shame on him.
This budgie also had parakeet mange(an infestation of mites on the beaks feet and cere in parakeets)
I took special care of the new bird which we named blueberry, and cleaned everything with vinegar and water. next I rubbed vegetable oil on the beaks and feet of the birds and let them bathe.
Crow Feather Excuse me WHAT?!
Crow Feather poor bird 😭
Dont you get to choose your bird? How come you didn't notice these things before you bought him/her?
Jesse Mathis wow, that is ridiculous! rip little birdie....
My petco actually knows there shit😂 lmao blessed I only trust the manager and she refuses any person that doesn’t know what they are doing
Taylor King lmaooo take me there to buy the whole store
Same
same with me
Same wit my petsmart
Aye. I wanna work there. That place seems cool
I choose to believe the dislikes are just people who don't like what's happening to the animals. I hope this video gets lots of attention.
Or pet co owners & employees who give out this info
Or it could just be that people don't think wild animals belong in cages (perhaps with the exception of those which are at risk of extinction.) If there weren't foolish people buying lizards, PetCo wouldn't sell them. This hypocrite is essentially promoting the very behavior she condemns because her natural and healthy maternal instincts have been hijacked away from caring for her own children and towards caring for lizards.
I remember going to petco and I saw like, 7 damn leopard geckos in one small tank
Me two!
@FreezedIcee AJ I saw about 6 in a port richey fl Petco.
Lucky. I counted somewhere between 15 to 20 in one of the ones I was in.
if a leopard gecko must be kept with other geckos, there must only ever be 3, one male and 2 female.
PLEASE DON’T BUY ANIMALS FROM CHAIN PET STORES! It just encourages them to buy more animals and treat them horribly!
I love how liberals , conservatives, and independents all feel the exact same about petco lol
Rusty Irons LIBERALS JUST GOT OWNED EPIC STYLE 😎
Conservatives rektt
No animal should be treated this way. I think that is something everyone can agree on. No matter what political views they might have.
We need to protest about Petco, who’s with me
This anon certainly is!
toby. fx Me! They told me my lizard had bone disease the entire time when I told them he died!
me
Let the boycotting begin!
toby. fx fuck yeah
Guys we need to email this to Petco or show it to the staff( this is a team effort!)
Absolutely! Everyone needs to email or share this to the main Petco headquarters!
“Because they are from the desert” oh god noooooooooo
Bonjour ; th-cam.com/video/UVGKamfmIS4/w-d-xo.html
As the lady was talking, in my head I was just correcting everything she was saying
Like I’m sure she’s nice, but ahhhh none of that was right 😫😫😫
me too
I went to a Petco and looked at the bearded dragons some were orange and some were gray, but here's when I got mad the gray-bearded dragon's enclosure was REALLY SMALL, while the orange ones had a 50 gallon enclosure.
Try reporting it, it might work!
So sad :(
I wish that would happen too but so rarely it doesn’t
yeah, my petco is good at caring for leopard gecko surprisingly
I dunno if anyone is gonna say it? no?... then i wil: you ppl making these video's are heroes
000bluebird000 :D I agree 100%
000bluebird000 :D Lmao its not affecting nobody or anything tho...

I go through comments agreeing and sharing with these poeople
uummmm... NO. they need to take better care of ALL their pets. they have so much pets but not ONE is in amazing health. ugh. it makes me so mad.
Literally why I adopted a 3 day old Crested gecko from Petco to get him out of there! I love my baby and he’s perfectly healthy now🥰
petco and petsmart is pretty stupid. they don't give their workers training and the manager gets MAD if you ask someone a question about your customers going to be pet.
Top 10 WarriorCats petsmart at my town treats the animals right
Top 10 WarriorCats your grammar is fucking shit
PetSmart is better than Petco tho
ARK the man Yeah I just got my leopard gecko today! We don’t know if it’s a girl or boy yet but it’s name is Kiwi and he/she is in great health!
Same experience
Logan Olavi Ansley I got my Leopord gecko from a breeder
I was surprised because my local pet smart housed lepord gekos exactly right and knew alot
Mike Sims I just got a leopard gecko at petco and it’s healthy and happy. This video was posted almost 3 years ago so their care has improved a lot.
Mike Sims what I learned is that petco it terrible but in some cases a lot of petsmart people know what there doing like the geckos and turtles there are completely healthy and have a good population know what I dont like is the amount of bearded dragons they put together
@@emoXjessiX2030 you're supporting the mill that the gecko came from though
yes pet smart is a lot better at keeping there animals in better conditions. Though there are some things they can improve.
Don't forget to add that they need a moisture den so their skin can shed properly otherwise it'll pinch their toes off Petco.
Unfortunately that store may still get their animals from mills, and if it does, they shouldn’t be supported.
When i got my gecko i was pretty ticked that they had sand in the tank. When you feed the gecko the mealworms or crickets will move around. If the gecko eats the sand it can hurt them and possibly kill them.
I would recommend putting paper as the floor for them
huhhhh? i work at petco and our planograms for all of our reptiles say no sand, just reptile carpet. whoever worked at that petco wasn’t doing their job 🙄
Nice!
What is the name of your grandpas shop i might buy some pets from his shop
Non chain pets stores usually do much better than chain ones in terms of animal care. There are 18 local fish shops, 2 pet shops and a reptile shop in my area. All the ones I have gone to take great care of there animals.
Awesome!!
Amber Priestley well yes., but they don't take car of them well.
What i meant was fish on the verge of death sorry i wasent clear enough
CTM Gaming! Lol it’s okay
Ive been told "It's just getting used to the water"
I'm pretty sure that's fake. Yes Petco is very terrible company, but no one's stupid enough to say "There playing".
