Great idea using the pinking shears. I donate all my flies & use glued-in foam & washed takeout containers to create fly storage boxes for any larger flies that won’t fit in the small, cheap boxes I purchase. The users then transfer their selected flies to real fly boxes onsite.
For a background screen, I use either white 60 lb printer paper (light card stock) or 1/8" foam sheets from the craft store. The foam sheets are 8.5" x 11" and come in a lot of colours, including yellow, beige, and green. They are also great for tying foam hoppers.
Or just fold the top of the card and it will stay in place without any clips or pegs that are distracting and ugly. You can have cards in different colors to suit like white, grey, black, blue, green...so cheap and easy.
Really,I was thinking the same thing and just fold and hang it. Guess we should work for NASA since this sort of critical thinking is beyond the scope of anyone anymore. I guess that's why companies make and one needs to buy a backing plate in the 1st place.
Awesome tips, Jason! May I ask where your background plate is from. The attachment piece to the vise post is more robust than what I see available currently.

Thanks, I think I can use both of these.
Good class thanks

Do you have a link to the fly boxes that you make?
Construction paper...and it comes in a vast assortment of colors. (My .02)

You could put the clothes in in line with the vice behind it so you couldn’t see it. Totally good idea.
Thanks for sharing
Sweet - total game changer...
Great tips Jason! You don't want to know what I use for a background in fly pics 🙃

Isn't this the reason for having HELPING HANDS!
18 percent gray is a better background.
