The key to mixing guitars is understanding their role in the song.
No matter how incredible of a guitar tone you got on recording day, the point of a guitar in the mix is NOT to occupy every bit of top end, low end, and mid range available.
Not only that but using the power of EQ to strategically create width, separation, and focus on your guitar tracks is incredibly helpful to getting the guitar mix you truly want. Today let me show you my go-to mix move and how you can get a great guitar mix in just 10 minutes!

Quick question, I'm using the KRK KNS 8400 Headphones to mix(best ones I've ever used) and I'm looking to buy some studio monitors next for my home studio. What monitors do you recommend for Hip-Hop/R&B or just as a go to for mixing vocals ? I almost feel like duh "get the KRK Studio Monitors to match up" but then I also want to make sure I'm getting the right gear for the right job. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always
      Thanks!

Hey Graham, I have been following your channel for several years now and I just wanted to say you are an excellent engineer and teacher. I have learned much from you and have applied it in my mixes. Much respect from Texas.

I hated the wah by itself on that lead riff, but it was really fitting when you played every audio track again.
Good wee lesson in the context of each instrument within a song

I super like the Waves API EQ and compressor plug-ins. I've found them to be very, very musical sounding with only minimal EQ moves in particular. That does assume of course that someone has done a good job capturing good sounds in the first place. I do a better job as a tracking engineer than as a mix engineer if I'm being completely honest with everyone. The best mixes do start with the best source material and the best job capturing it.

Absolutely right on ! Juggling the EQ on similar guitars, plus panning, is essential; he explains it perfectly. I'm happy to see the Waves plugins as I just acquired them days ago ! Thanks RecordingRevolution ! ( The tips work in multiple genres too )

Generally, Multi mic setup and correct placement of an SM57 and an MXL Ri44 Ribbon Mic with a cloud lifter (gets that darker tone) then blending them together for that nice midrange tone... lately, I've just been getting great tone running the stereo outs of my Headrush.

When you said listen / mixing in mono - do you only turn on the mono button, or do you also turn off one of your speakers, and only listening at one speaker?

@@chadkirk2977 so correct which you can do on recording day, with a different voice of Eq for left and right, with slightly more echo on one channel, but record them separate, not just copy and paste them, for a better width result. Then make another copy, of them both and parralell, compress, then you will feel it, this is what i learned in England from Brian Mays (Queen) studio engineer, Then reamp it for your live performances
