This game looks like fun. I know, not a lot of story, and yea pretty straightforward what your goal is, but this kind of game is just what I need sometimes, something you can just pick up, play for a bit, discover some land and then put it down. No major story points to remember, just a fun turn based beat’em up, I’m looking forward to getting this
I love 3DS remasters, the Etrian Odyssey 1-3 remasters are great. Legend of Legacy has a bit of the looks of the first Bravely Default, just way more colorful. I like hardcore classic turnbased mechanics, so based on your review i will definately give this a try. What i'll always keep hoping for is a remaster or even remake of "Ever Oasis" village sim / ARPG from the late New 3DS era. That game was gorgeous and really emersive in my opinion, you cared for your little village you helped building around an oasis and the outside world was designed almost like a Zelda game, with quite a few puzzles and lots of tricky combat plus a few dungeons. And the bosses were fun, too.
Yes, I'm surprised how much attention is having this re-release while the far superior alliance alive is forgotten, being in the switch for many years. This game has the battle system, infuriating random and unbalanced in gaining stats and abilities, and the exploration. That's all. Not story (the intro and ending, nothing else). Not character development (intro and ending, that's all). Not anything. The alliance alive has the same battle system improved and balance (you are not learning a final ability five minutes in the game, or not gaining anything at all for hours, like could be the case in legend of legacy). You have a good story, a full World to explore. Several characters with character developement...
I actually prefer this one quite a bit over Alliance Alive. I felt like Alliance Alive cut a BIT too much fat from the mechanical complexity of this one and the game we got was slightly too simple for a proper SaGa-like.
@@DairunCatesThe Alliance Alive is like SaGa Frontier 2 it was made to target a more casual audience. Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly an expecting different results there's 10 mainline SaGa games with an 11th on the way, there's the spiritual successors The Alliance Alive and The Legend of Legacy, the spiritual predecessor Final Fantasy II,Akitoshi Kawazu was heavily involved with Legend of Mana and The Last Remnant was supposed to be UNLIMITED Saga 2... shouldn't most people know by now that these games aren't made for everyone? It's been 30 years y'all should know by now what you like in a JRPG and whether if this franchise is for you or not.
AA is kinda trapped on my 2ds.. I’d probably get the remaster if my backlog wasn’t as big.. I’m not familiar with LoL but it does look adorable.. I’ll just wait for a sale tho
I used to own this game on the 3DS, but never played it since I sold my 3DS collection. But hey, I'll get the chance once again now! Great review, David~
This is one I missed on the 3ds so have been wanting to pick up on the switch. I think I'll wait for a sale now though. I still want to give it a try sometime. Thank you for the review!
It’s nice to have games like this just as a cool down in a sense. I’m just now finishing up trails into reverie being heavily story driven and a lot to get done. This seems like it’ll be a welcome relaxing game.
Ah nice. How was reverie? I'm doing the Trails megamarathon right now and just got to the Cold Steel games. Also, fair warning? I do think this game is a good cool down game, but it's also mechanically obtuse and kinda hard kf you don't figure that out. I can see a lot of people getting frustrated by the fact that they can't get their healing magic to work because they don't understand the magic field system. ...but if you're like me and LIKE to wind down with mechanically crunchy games, then yeah, it's a GREAT cooldown RPG. It's nice and short too with a focus on multiple playthroughs like SaGa Frontier or Minstrel Song. So, you can dip in for a quick playthrough as a quick cooldown or go all-in.
@@DairunCates I’ve been a trails fan since Sky on the PSP. The culmination of the 9 games is amazing. Getting the opportunity to play all the characters and then some in the same game is awesome. @@kableguy0294 Yeah. I know. No Kevin after Azure. Apparently there's hints Kevin might be in Farewell Zemuria. So, I ONLY have to wait 7 games. :P Good to hear we get more Wazy though.
I missed a bunch of 3DS RPGs, saw that Legend of Legacy remaster is on sale right now on Woot for $34.99 and had to come by and see if you had a review. Sure enough you did! And now I’m going to have to hunt down Alliance Alive too it sounds like based on the comments. Thanks for the review! Will be ordering shortly :)
I can say that after hearing the general response of the original release of this game I was surprised to hear that they were bringing it back to re release it. I have played Alliance Alive and while I only got about 20% into the game I can say the art style and concept it used was beautiful and interesting. I feel similarly about this even if the story is basically very simple overall but that pop up book style of this one is so fun to look at especially in this review. I preordered the PS5 limited edition from NIS when they first opened up preorders and I am ready for it to get here. Thanks again David!
Ugh..March 22nd is way too stacked, this, Princess Peach, Dragons Dogma 2. But I’m looking forward to playing this since I never played the 3DS version.
I loved Alliance Alive, and I completely missed this one on 3DS. It seems like the perfect game for quick grinding sessions on the Switch when I'm just in the mood to whack some baddies
I´m actualy enjoying Legend Of Legacy HD. It reminds me of SaGa: Scarlet Grace, that game also had the most interesting combat mechanics for short bursts of gaming. You play a bit go on with everyday life and give it another swing. Try to make some progres at 3 a.m. when you randomly wake up and get sleep deprived in the process.
I know this game was hated on 3ds because of the level up system being random.. it's a very saga style game and personally I enjoyed it. But it's no wonder why they changed a lot for the sequel that came out.
Yeah... But I specifically LOVE the randomized levelups keeping me on my toes. My favorite SaGa-likes are the ones where EVERYTHING levels instead of hp, mp, and weapon level. So, I prefer this one over Alliance Alive. Things are weird like that.
I have physical retail copies of both The Legend of Legacy and The Alliance Alive on the 3Ds and on the PS4. I have a physical retail copy of The Alliance Alive HD Remaster on the Switch and a digital copy on Steam. I'm also planning to get a physical version of The Legend of Legacy HD Remaster for Switch and still need to get it on Steam as well.
As someone that's really gotten into SaGa-likes, I am excited for this one. I played the original and loved it for a lot of the reasons other people hate it. The mechanical complexity makes combat interesting and keeps things somewhat dynamic (when you get it), and the simplistic story allowed the ambient storytelling and world lore to shine a bit. Also, I like the SaGa-like games where ALL of your stats grow instead of just HP and weapon levels, because it allows you to tinker more with your characters. That's something Alliance Alive really lacked.
Saw this after I saw Derek's review. It's good to know the expectations. I think I'll still pick it up since NISA is doing the collector's edition. Happy for the review to make sure of proper expectations.
One of my sleeper favorites on the 3DS. Relatively short, does not overstay its welcome, and offers a decent challenge. Great to play between bigger JRPGs. Also: A singing frog prince.
This game came before Alliance Alive, which is why some people probably found it boring in comparison. I played this first on the 3DS and loved it. Difficult, but the battle system of learning new moves was fun yet exciting since its random. Also the music is amazing. I love it and totally recommend giving the soundtrack a listen. Especially the battle themes! There is honestly a lot more to this game if you give it the time and patience. It isn't for everyone, but similar to SAGA series games if you like those! Totally picking this up again once it comes out! Hopefully I can fully complete the game this time!!
I have the special edition of the 3DS game and you can tell nobody cares about it because even the special edition is only worth $30. I could't get into this one at all on my 3DS.
I enjoyed Legend of Legacy back on the 3DS, but I agree that the lack of Quality of Life features was frustrating. The way that I like to think of it is as a Dungeon Crawler RPG in the vein of Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey, but as an overworld SaGa game. Trying to experience it as a standard JRPG like a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest will definitely put players off, but knowing what to expect makes it far more enjoyable.
I’m excited about this, but exactly because it doesn’t have much of a story and is kind of bland. I’ve been looking for a good “second screen” jrpg lately, and this seems like it will fit the bill. I loved playing grindy games like this as a kid while watching TV with my folks, and I’m still that way as an adult, but instead of TV I like to play while listening to podcasts or an audiobook. No story and pretty simple gameplay are perfect for that.
Let's be real, they sent this game out to die, especially in this day and age. It's very telling when Alliance Alive got a remaster way before this game did. And when much better RPGs are in abundance this year? Yeah, no.
I've never played it before, I think it looks alright! I don't like a lot of story to my games, and I like a good battle system. The weapon and armour stats sound a bit annoying, they should've updated that, but being an old school rpger I'm used to going in and out of the menu. I will probably pick this up.
I had my eye on this game, but not sure. While I like SaGa-like games, I often tend to drop them before reaching that far in the game. I think the aesthetics really sold me though.. Maybe I'll wait for a sale. Oh and one correction to the review! The game is also released on PC.
Thanks for your review! I was on the fence about picking this up and it helped me decide that, unfortunately, this game is just not for me, even though I love other games published by NIS.
Why is this almost double the cost of the original? Nothing wrong with a simpler ‘unga bunga’ game every now and then, but not when it’s $50 AND a remaster. I’ll wait for when it drops down to around $20.

Highly recommend it to rpg lovers.)
For how annoying the rng and grind is, this was a perfect game to play while watching something else. Very light story and just dungeon after dungeon. Can also pack a punch but with how characters are carbon copies of each other, it makes "fixing" your party easy just by swaping items or grinding a new skill or two.
Was wondering if there was any voice acting at all or if It's all text sorry if you mentioned that in your video. I missed that part somehow Thank you for the video review. Appreciate it. Hope you have a great day!
Played a few hours on the 3DS, don't think I'll double-dip. You'll be exploring around, then suddenly get ambushed by some insanely powerful enemy. He'll either one-shot you, or you'll be fighting him for twenty minutes with no end in sight because you can't see his health bar.
