  • A three day trip to the only part of Lithuania not connected by land.
We drove over to Klaipeda on the west coast of Lithuania and then boarded the ferry to the Curonian Spit. Half of the spit is owned by Lithuania, and half by Russia- the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Our destination was Nida- the final Lithuanian town before the boarder with Kaliningrad.

Its always amazing to see countries ravaged by war rebuild themselves into beautiful destinations to visit.
IIRC, this very coastline was witness to terrible fighting during WW2 with the retreating Germans fighting massive advancing Russian armies.
Many German units were surrounded, cut-off and either evacuated by small boats, surrended or died to the last man fighting in an ever shrinking perimeter with their backs to the Baltic.
Some German units in this region were still fighting when the Russian Army took Berlin and Germany surrendered.
I can't imagine the destruction this region, and Lithuiania itself suffered during this war.

I live in Kaliningrad and can't even count how many times I have crossed that border (mostly by bicycle) to visit Nida. Without accomodation but to visit Kurshis restaraunt was mandatory. Its really amazing town, not comparable with 3 villages which we have on russian side. And the whole lituanian side looks better, I mean what is done by people. The nature almost the same on both sides.
Now the border is closed, visa is very hard to get. So thank you for opportunity to see Nida again. It brought me flashbacks and good memories.

for those who think Lithuania is dirt cheap, well this is the Mayfair of the country. Like UK, there are cheap areas and expensive areas
Those little wooden houses are extremely expensive usually over 1m euro if you can get one. It's millionaires row. The Bentley's are a giveaway as to how expensive the area actually is.

It was late night, it was dark, and we were having beer and looking at the moon above the Kuronian lagoon. One of my friends noticed that the path of light produced by the moon on the water is always directed towards you (the observer).

Amazing video Freddie! Glad Monika brought you there! Curonian Spit is one of my favourite places in the entire world! Brought my Irish partner to Nida last year, he was blown away by its beauty as well! And the atmosphere there is just something else that you cannot even describe really. I would definitely suggest you to visit the following places since you're in the Curonian Spit and all of them are generally located between Nida and Juodkrantė (if Monika haven't planned it already!): Vecekrugo kopa, which is not far off Nida. Parking is a bit of an issue there, as there are simply very few spaces to park since it's literally at the main road, but once you manage to park, the walk through the beautiful forest is so brilliant and views are 110% worth it! Then the Grey Dunes (a.k.a. Dead Dunes) - these are not far from Juodkrantė. These give you Sahara Desert feel, as the sand there, as you walk to the very top of the hill, is more exposed and it's everywhere you look! Then Hill of Witches, which is in Juodkrantė. Forest packed with pagan wooden sculptures, which is a truly weird place. And finally, the Colony of Grey Herons and Great Cormorants, which is also located near Juodkrantė, a bird-destroyed forest. Plenty of stunning places conveniently packed in such a tiny strip of land!

The 30 euros fee is only during the high season, it's 10 euros in shoulder season and 5 euros in low season. It's definitely designed to keep cars off, you can come by bus, boat or bicycle instead. When it was cheaper it was much more congested. It's probably still too low, there are still quite many cars and people are spending 150 or more per night for a hotel so the fee is low in comparison.

    • @PijusONLINE
      @PijusONLINE ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@ihavegreeneyes14 Exactly, it's for keeping cars out, NOT people: cyclists, pedestrians and those coming by bus don't have to pay anything at the tollbooth. It's a car tax. What a silly thing to say anyway, Ingrida is probably one of those people who identify with their car. For them, car not allowed equals I'm (and therefore "people") not allowed. And furthermore, money raised at the entrance is actually directly used on building new cycling paths. Which will make it easier and easier in time to come FOR FREE without needing a car the way you still probably need one now to be comfortable. Not so dystopian-exclusionary after all, huh.

Anybody else spot the Dutch registered Volvo? About 1200km from the Dutch border, they do love a road trip on their holidays.

Guys, I love your channel. I love how you take us to some of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world. And the motorcycling grin factor 😁. You guys have amazing chemistry between you and come at things from different angles which is so fun. I love Freddie’s enthusiasm and historical interests. I love Monica’s comments and beautiful laugh. You guys are so cool 😎 . So thank you for taking us to places I would probably not have a chance to get to. Lithuania is so far from Australia. And to have a local take us round is really special.
Monica- can I just say, and please I would never presume to tell you guys what to do, but please don’t ever feel you need to put on a swimsuit or objectify yourself for this channel. I’m sure there must be not a small amount of pressure to do so. And there are so many who do this already. But you have amazing talents with a video camera. And your editing is fantastic. Anyway just felt moved to say something. If that is not appropriate then forgive me. Blessings. ❤️

Nida's plan is to close all car traffic to city. They're planing to build big parking near city, where you can leave your car. You'll be allowed only drive to city to leave your stuff.
Also there are very strict requirements to all houses. You can't paint house as you want. Also if you have a backyard you can't make all yard concrete must leave at least 25%(not sure about this number) of it grass. and etc.

Stunning vlog once again Freddie/Monika, I'm well travelled and have witnessed so many beautiful places as you have here but when I return home got to admit it's embarrassing when I see any foreign tourists visiting the once great but now run down sea side towns and villages, most know the main reasons for this but sadly we can't mention it.

Wow stunning , 30 euros is worth it
As someone has said the charge is to limit numbers so it does not get overcrowded as well as generating income for area
I would never imagined places like this existed in Lithuania. I don’t expect it gets many uk tourists
    Thanks for sharing Freddie

The UK is technically among Lithuania's top sources of inbound tourists, but I'd expect some non-insignificant part of the UK number to consist of the 300k Lithuanians living in the UK (more than 10% of the country) coming back to visit their parents, so you're probably right.

    • @FreddieDobbs

It’s very interesting hearing the different languages spoken in different regions. Vilnius, for example; a gigantic amount of Russian speakers, but in Nida there were a lot of English speakers (and also American accent English speakers) because I’m guessing a huge amount of Lithuanians who relocated to the UK and the US come to Nida for their summer holidays.

Considering the kind of promotion you've done for Nida and Lithuania in general, the least Lithuania could do is reimburse you for your 30 euros.

Actually a long time ago our port city of Klaipeda and Nida mostly was lived by Prussians, then later on these territories were taken by Germany until 1919, it's easy to recognize German housing architecture in Nida, houses with carvings in roof are German style, even tho we have new housings in Nida, they still retain some sort of german architecture, mostly is the German style roofing.
